I got 64gb Lexar microSD and it worked fine for a few years but now is death. I tried to get a warranty repair (10yrs or life) but nobody bothers to reply to my emails :(

    • Not relevant in this case, this is a completely different company. Lexar is no longer Lexar. (Probably for the worse though.)

      • +17

why not? if they bought the rights (to use the brand) they should've bought the responsibilities (to fix a warranty issue) too :(

At least it can serve as a warning to others that if they buy their (now 3yrs) warranty might be gone just like that… :)

        • -4

if they bought the rights (to use the brand) they should've bought the responsibilities (to fix a warranty issue) too :(

          Why would you assume that?

          • +9

@p1 ama: Why would you assume otherwise? As an end user I dont care, I see lexar, I want my warranty :)

            • -5

@stefanko: warranty rights might be with previous company owner …..hassle them …..

              • +4

@garage sale: Sorry mate, I don't have the energy to pretend to like you today. Are you serious or just born with a bad sense of humor

            • @stefanko:

They are a different company. They did not sell you the original product. They did not produce the original product. They probably do not own the manufacturing facilities that produced the original product. They probably cannot fix nor replace a product they did not make nor design…etc.

If anything, you should take your problem up with Micron, the company who sold you the original product?

    Nice find OP

Seems like a bargain. Anyone knowledgeable have any thoughts on using this as a storage (not OS) drive? Cheers

    • +2

While it might seem quite tempting, you can still get a 1TB HDD for a much better price… If you will use this drive purely for storage, there is no point buying an SSD for that purpose since you aren't going to access it very often

    • Good enough to use this as game drive.

      • better off with a cheap amazon 8tb or 10/12 tb game drive - then move what you play currently

    • Good enough for a storage drive, the price difference between HDD and SSD is small enough you should go for it

  • How is this compared to the Samsung SSD deal from earlier (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/538529) ?

    • +5

Samsung SSDs are much better than this one. Well better quality, more endurance, and get free R6

  • Thanks OP. This has to be better than the ancient WD Green 1TB drives sitting in my system.

  • Seems like an amazing deal… 1TB SSD storage should be absolutely perfect for loading up Steam games. I would find this amazing since I wouldn't have to delete my old games when I need to download new ones (I got 256GB NVME storage atm)

  • will this work on a xbox one?

    • Yup if it's 3.0 complient or the console will look at it as (virus joke) non compatible.

    • +2

      Wot

      • -4

        Ah don't forget things like

Substance painter, fruity loops daws, Photoshop, blender ect.

        This would really help out.

        Steam what's steam eew

      • +2

Think they mean you can use the extra SSD storage for non-Steam things like their list of programs as well. "Substance painter" and "fruity loops daws" are a 3D texturing application and an alternative way of saying FL studio respectively.

    • reminds me of a cool song i heard the other day, it was called Delirium

3D TLC and DRAM-less… would not recommend this as a boot drive or for anything that you’d like good, consistent speeds for. Maybe if you’re looking for a lot of capacity, but don’t like HDD speed? Definitely a very low-tier SSD. Good price per TB if you’re trying to make some sort of SSD NAS, maybe.

    • It would do a lot better as a boot drive than sticking in a NAS.

Uses the Marvell 88NV1120 controller (DRAMless) and Micron 3D TLC flash.

      • It would do a lot better as a boot drive than sticking in a NAS.

Because most brands have a clause stating that NAS/Server use will void the warranty and not to mention the lack of endurance. An IronWolf 960GB NAS SSD has 1750TBW endurance, while the Lexar has 512TBW endurance. The cache will also be better suited for the read/writes.

    • thanks, was trying to find out if this has a dram cache or not

    • -1

I appreciate the constructive post, hitting the positives and negatives.

    • No DRAM on a 1TB drive is a big turn off

    • Yep bought this to replace an ancient 1Tb spinny thing to store local photos and videos - which I sync to a NAS for additional security. Thanks OP.

  • Perfect steam game drive!

  • Think for the extra few $$$ this would be betterdeal.

    https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/crucial-mx500-1tb-560…

    MX500 1tb Crucial $175 plus shipping

    • +1

      That's not just a few $$$ though… $175 vs $129. Assuming shipping is the same, that's 46 buckaroos difference, 35%

    • The added benefit of the MX500 is that it's using Silicon Motion SM2258 controller which adds 512mb of DRAM cache compared to the Lexar with none. They both use 3D TLC flash by Micron, but the MX500 has less endurance than the Lexar.

Is it really worth $50 more? No way! Just spend an extra $20 more than the Crucial and get a Samsung SSD instead.

  • Samsung 1TB SSD $199 vs Lexar 1TB SSD $129.

Will the Lexar 1TB last as long as Samsung 1TB?

    • Nope

      • +1

Lexar has been sold off by Micron to a third party a few years ago - hard to say if their quality had suffered but this means they have become just another third tier SSD manufacturer who does not manufacture their own NAND nor controller - unlike first tier manufacturers like Samsung, WD, etc where they design and fabricate their own NAND flash chips and controllers.

    • buy 2 x Lexars then, and each Lexar is a back-up of the other :-)

      • 2 x Lexar means double the cost, that is not cost effective though.

        • …losing data is not cost effective either!

i've been buying 2 x cheap HDDs, when I can.
          Back-up of a back-up. I have lost data before :-\

    • Lexar isn't a brand I would trust. Their USB sticks are notoriously poor which may/may not be the same for SSDs.

However, with 3 year warranty, it's not a bad choice for a secondary drive to stick media or games on. Definitely do not use as a primary OS drive or for any content you do not have backups for. Better safe than sorry.

      • The price tag is tempting, but after reading the constructive reviews, I rather go for the well known brand, Samsung. Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Price looks good to me for the size, anyone know if Shopping Express are reliable?

    • +1

      They are indeed reliable

  • +1

cheap 1TB SATA SSD and good for loading up with a heap of Steam games.

My exact use case, pure steam drive only.

    • +1

Suitable for running an OS on an older computer too?

  • -2

dramless, might as well buy a velociraptor at this point.

    • +1

Stupid comment. DRAMless doesn't make an SSD slow for all use cases.

  • Ah don't forget things like

Substance painter, fruity loops daws, Photoshop, blender ect.

    This would really help out.

    Steam what's steam eew

  • edit: nvm

  • Just bought it, now I can use my HDD that has win7, and upgrade a dual mount of 10 and 7, and use my old HDD as a back up while offsetting the rest to the external HDD for my Netflix collection of wonders.

Would prefer 4k but nothing really affordable right now, maybe in a decade 20tb ssd, may cost $200 or so then, who knows.

Will definitely mount unreal engine sdk, and stuff completely obvious to the average steam user.

  • How does this compare to he crucial bx series?

  • Is this going to be good on XBOX OneX Internal Drive replacement?

    • XB1X requires near full disassembly to access the internal drive and will void your warranty. But yeah it would work fine.

  • Considering getting this to upgrade my PS4 from 500GB to 1TB.
Would this be sufficient for the PS4 or should i get the 860 evo deal that's going on at the moment?

    • +2

PS4 can't really use SSDs to their full potential anyway, so I'd say this would be fine.

    • I will argue that you should get an external 1 to 2 TB SSD instead of replacing the internal drive, and some reason are:

      1) The speed difference between the internal and external is negligible due to the systems limitations so keep the internal drive for additional storage.
      2) PS5 will play PS4 games, if you get a PS5 and want to play PS4 games you probably don't want them using up the storage space of the super fast and super expensive internal drive and instead use the external SSD you had for the PS4. That external SSD should also be faster on the PS5.
      3) You could sell the PS4 if you get a PS5 and you wouldn't want to lose that SSD.

  • Really good considering it's TLC. Might be my game drive when the new consoles start influencing game development.
