Some things to be aware of:
Because this is a new plan, we don't yet know what the typical evening peak speed will be, so you'll notice that our Critical Information Summary and Key Fact Sheets for now just list the 250 plan peak evening speeds. We think the plan should achieve off-peak speeds of up to 80-90%, depending on the technology type.

    • ok thanks

  • This is a great deal would jump at it… too bad I am on FTTC… still have Optus HFC too but not sure if that will be decommissioned

  • Just wondering what is the use case for speeds in excess of 100mbps in a normal family household?

    • +1

It’s all relative, downloading a ps4 game might be great with 100mbps (12 MB/ second) - have the spare cash around for this plan and you’ll be downloading it 10 times faster ( 120 MB/ second)

      • So every few months you can save 30 minutes.

        • Depends, on Xbox Games pass there are 5-10 new games released a month as part of the subscription (like netflix for gaming)

  • When will you rollout these plans on FTTN?

    • +6

FTTN is one of the slowest NBN connection types and probably can’t even support these speeds, so never.

    • +1

Pay to upgrade to FTTP or upgrade by changing residence location

    • +1

I'm sure they'd happily offer you these plans on fttn. You'd pay top dollar and get fttn speeds :-)

  • So I have a Netgear Orbi Mesh wifi router and satellite , will that be sufficient for this?

    • Via Ethernet. You won’t get full gigabit over wifi

  • How do you know if your property will get 1000Mbps HFC?

Do they show the rollout? or which suburbs will have it at launch

    • -1

Nobody knows. So upvoting this now makes no sense

      • +3

Disagree. I'm upvoting this good deal to highlight to others and to show appreciation to OP for posting. Bonus if my NBN included in HFC supported.
This is a good NBN deal unless it’s unobtainable by most…

        • +1

Agree with this point. I wouldn’t have known that this was happening if I hadn’t seen this post. Thanks OP.

    • FYI I called ABB yesterday and they said it will be available on your MyAussie portal on the 29th if available

      • Thanks. Problem is I am not a current ABB customer

  • What states is this in

    • Nationwide.

      • Nationwide but just not nationwide as FTTP where this really shines is really only in something the size of Hobart/Launceston.

        • +1

1,422,645 premises out of 6,601,864 on the NBN (as @ Dec ‘19) can connect to FTTP.

          • -1

@interfreak: Most are in Labor’s “get the hard and more remote areas done first”.

I don’t think we will see big take up of over $100 a month internet packages there.

            • +2

              @checkingthisout: That's a very large generalisation.

Darwin, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Hobart, Canberra, Coffs Harbour, Mandurah are all large regional (and some Capital) cities and are largely FTTP. Townsville in particular is the most fibre connected city in the country.

              • @interfreak: I sure hope so. I’d love to see 1000mbps become one of the best selling products. Just not holding my breathe. Believe the ACCC said $65 something was what people were happy to pay.

  • +4

Here we go boys and girls! “Wtf why does our HFC connection keep dropping out?!”

That upload speed is a joke lol

  • Sweet! Currently on FTTP with Aussie. Happy to give the 1000/50 a shot :)

  • Isn't the wholesale of this plan from NBN only $80.
I'm expecting more providers providing this exact plan for $129 or lower.

    • +3

That doesn’t include the poor amount of CVC they provide. This would be VERY expensive to have a low ratio on.

  • I thought FTTC was better than HFC.
Wonder why it’s not offered for FTTC

    • +1

      HFC can bound multiple channels
DOCSIS 3.1 standard supports up to 10 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload speeds

      • +1

Should be added to that: *Shared

    • Nothing is better than FTTP. HFC is better than FTTC. NBN is poor at all though. So HFC is better on TPGs private network as a point.

      • +4

        What?

        • Not sure where you got lost.

FTTP is the best. God given access tech.
HFC done right is ok. NBN HFC is dog shit with a bow. Max 50Mbps upload.
FTTC is crap. With sprinkles. Highest fault rate.
FTTN is a copper investment that is waiting for a down turn in copper mining to make maximum returns. Literal garbage.

          Wireless. Why bother.

Satellite. For tracking cows and farms only.

      • My understanding in order of speed and bandwidth was, from best to worst:
        1) FTTP
        2) FTTB
        3) FTTC
        4) HFC
        5) FTTN
        6) Wireless
        7) Satellite

        Can someone correct me?

          1. FTTP
          2. HFC
          3. FTTC
          4. FTTB
          5. FTTN
          6. Wireless
          7. Sat
          • +1

@Twix: That’s interesting, because when FTTC was first touted circa 2017, it was supposedly the best thing you could get when FTTP was canned. Googling articles suggest also. Maybe they mean it’s the cheapest to upgrade to FTTP?

            • +2

@Boogerman: FTTC has the highest fault rate. It's good when it works. FTTC will be equal with HFC when NBN upgrade the FTTC network yet again.

FTTC-FTTP is cheaper to upgrade than HFC-FTTP.

            • @Boogerman: FTTC was the best thing once they canned everything.

HFC already existed and was repurposed - it's better than FTTC but had a ton of problems early on.

FTTC is just FTTN that essentially ensures maximum speeds of the technology, currently 100mbps. Has the potential to go to ~200mbps in some cases in the future. It's a good installation of crap technology.

        • -2

          According to the post above,

          1. NBN $0
          2. FTTP
          3. TPG
          4. HFC
          5. FTTC
  • Is this address checker showing the new plans already? Eg: if I check and it only says 100 down plans available, does that mean I won’t be eligible for the faster plans come Friday?

    • What technology are you on?

    • +1

Noticing this on a FTTP address myself, previously it showed the old 250 plan

      • Ditto, FTTP and only showing 100mbit (and previously was showing 250..)

  • Hey guys. I'm totally confused - maybe as I'm 50yo and a bit of a dud with NBN tech (which sounds a bit shite, tbh), but could I ask some knowledgeable advice? I'm in Sandgate, north Brisbane, I'm 200metres from the tel exchange (so I stick to my old adsl2+ TPG connection) for 30 bucks a month, and I'm meant to get 24mbps download/1mbps upload speeds (never works at more than half that speed though). TPG has told me my ADSL2+ thing runs out in a few months time, so I have no choice but to upgrade to the apparently-shite NBN. It looks like my address is HFC. I have a Fritzbox 7390 modem/router, which is apparently NBN-compliant. I'm a bit of a scab and don't want to spend more than $40 a month on something I can't eat! We use maybe 500gb a month (kids on youtube :-/ ), I guess. Do you guys recommend a particular service/provider that fits that tight-arsed ethos? Do I have any advantage anymore being close to the exchange, or is that just an adsl2 thing? :-|

    • +2

Hello neighbour, i'm in Shorncliffe. The exchange distance will not matter when you transfer to the HFC nbn. Its super reliable and fast around here. In terms of provider just pick whoever suits you best and cheapest (try Aussie Broadband), or Telstra. Most plans are unlimited data anyway so your data cap worry isn't necessary.

      • Brilliant, thanks neighbour. ;-)

    • +2

HFC will be miles better speed wise.

NBN price wise check ozbargain but generally you get what you pay for. There's a reason ABB is widely regarded. Just try and budget for them $79/mo 50/20 unlimited.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/nbn

      • Thanks Blaze. I've heard ABB are highly regarded, but insofar as 'you get what you pay for', what kind of dodgy scenarios occur with cheapy providers? Say Kogan for example (I presume they're considered a cheapie).. Is it just a case of bad customer service, mostly, with budget plans/providers, or do they pull more dubious moves?

        • +1

With budget ISPs you might come across..

Poor customer service and shorter support hours.
          Network congestion.
          Slower speeds in general.
          Slower international speeds.
Slower speeds at night when everyone is online.

If you try a budget ISP don't get locked in a contract!

    • +2

Unfortunately you won't get anything at $30. However, I think you are probably paying for a phone line as well right — probably $20-30 extra? Because you won't need to do that on NBN.
Belong (owned by Telstra) is $55, Kogan is $53.90 for 6 months. I haven't really looked much at low-end plans.

Aussie has a $49 plan but you need to be 60+.

No advantage in being closer to the exchange now.
I'm in the same place (4017) and I get 100/40 all day long. Will be taking up this 1000/50 too.

      • Thanks xsacha. Yes, you're right.. $25/month phone line I'll save. That'll help the budget - I forgot about that!

  • Would love to look at 1000 down. Currently on 250/100 with ABB but with a house full of game streamers and occasionally working from home, I don't want to lose the upload speed.

Will stay with what we've got, for the time being at least.

    • If you can afford it 1000/400

  • +5

Grr this gave me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I'm stuck forever on fixed wireless, on the current fastest plan of 60/10 (theoretical), which only works when it isn't raining anywhere between my house and the ground station 5 tower hops away. I live 30 minutes drive from an international airport, not in some remote outback setting.

If I ever see Turnbull, I'm going to call him some rude names.

    • +2

Careful. I got negged for not being content with 60Mbps tops. If those neggers have FTTP then I would be more than happy to swap with them but I fear they'd never put their money where their mouth is.

    • I'm sure they'll upgrade Fixed Wireless to 5G one day.

      • 5G doesn't work, as range is a serious issue. Many 5G towers are being placed on street poles lol

        • Range depends on the frequency. It's no different to 4G in that regard.
If you reuse the same frequency, you'll get same range + efficiency in the new protocol (i.e. faster speeds).

So either they reuse the same towers with the same frequency (2.3GHz?) or they'll install more towers with higher frequency. This is NBN we are talking about so they'll probably go cheapest option and just reuse.

    • Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, most voters only think of themselves at the ballot box, not the greater good
Hence why we have a sub-standard NBN. It still hasn’t even been connected in my area
I’ve given up on Australia after the last federal election - I have no faith in the ‘good’ of people anymore & set my expectations real low

  • -4

It says Friday release. Anyone know when on Friday? Any chance for a midnight release?

    • According to Whirlpool, any time on Friday up to 11.59pm

  • +2

Launtel has similar deals (but with 1Gig deals not as good as ABB?)
    100/20 $3.30 per day
    250/25 $4.00 per day
    250/100 $5.50 per day
    400-1000/50 $4.60 per day
    400-1000/400 $10.00 per day

    • 400 is the realistic speed. They actually gave a huge amount of businesses free/discounted gigabit in exchange for them to talk up the business and boy did it work!

ABB have more bandwidth in comparison as does Telstra so both would be more consistent.

  • +1

Looks like will have to upgrade my usg 3 port for a UDM Pro to get 1gb speed with IPS

    • sounds like an expensive upgrade

  • +1

For those on HFC, you can now check whether your connection is capable of getting 1000/50 or 250/25 by putting your address into the following URL: https://launtel.net.au/residential

    • Is this accurate? Because my address can only get 100/40 =(

      • You need to keep scrolling down to the section that says "Expected Speeds:".

Hopefully it says "Up to 250 Mbps" or better :)

        • NOOOOOOO I'm not the 7%!!! Lol

"Expected Speeds : Up to 250 Mbps"

Thanks for the heads up mate.

          • @MrMoo: No worries.

250/25 is still pretty good. Lots of people on Whirlpool are saying that they can only get 100/40 on HFC.

    • Damn, only "Up to 100Mbps" for me…

      • Me too dammit

  • +2

The AussieBB POI checker has a new field on it :)

"High Speed Tier Availability" - I have ">=250 Mbps" next to mine (HFC) - https://imgur.com/a/j1TFaJh

    https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-poi/

    • +1

Thanks bdl, I just checked and i can get the 1Gbps with Aussie. I really like Launtel with the option to change daily if required but they don't have this available in Qld yet, however they did say its only a matter of weeks. Exciting times for high speed internet.

    • +1

I would imagine only nodes that have DOCSIS 3.1 enabled will be able to hit 1000Mbps. 250 should be pretty easy for most on DOCSIS 3.0 though.

    • Hmmm I dont have that field show up on my HFC.

  • +1

Anyone know if this will be available in Western Australia, Launtel's gigabit connection is not available if your NBN goes through Vocus or LoLow…and that basically covers the entirety of Perth :(

    • Sometime this afternoon.

    • Contacted ABB and they said unlike Launtel they are offering this on Vocus and LoLow controlled networks.

  • +1

Just spoke with Aussie, new plans go live from 8am tomorrow (Friday)

    • +1

Funny, because an AussieBB technical guy on Whirlpool is saying no way until at least 3pm EST. Source: https://whrl.pl/Rf4GiT

It all seems like NBNCo has left RSPs relatively in the dark for this, and there will probably be bugs and/or disappointment early on.

      • +1

I should have saved the chat. I was on their site and the chat box came up. I think it was Paul. I asked him a few questions about connections. He said the new plans would be active on their site from 8am tomorrow (now today), and if there weren't any issues with my connection, it would only take a few hours to connect. He was part of the sales team though ;)

        • +5

          No, it will be 3pm.

  • +4

Apparently there is bug on the NBN-side of the new portal that they're waiting to be fixed, hence the 3pm delay.

Additionally, the NBN SQ should get an update in a few hours time with more accuracy; might pay people to re-check via ABB tools if they can get it later today.

  • When these go live, as a new customer to ABB, and don't need a modem etc how long till the connection is processed and my telstra connection cuts off?

    • +2

      20mins in my experience

      • From a brand new sign up? That’s impressive

    • +2

If you're fttp they will connect it on another port so then you just have to move the cable at the NTD and dont have to worry about disconnection

    • +1

Get in touch with Telstra to cancel or they keep charging you.

  • +2

What a great coincident - I am getting my NBN (FTTP) installed today. About time! I will test it for a month before I wave Optus 4G home broadband goodbye.

  • ok speed is great, technically i get good speeds but when i play games even tho ping is 50ish the screen flickers and stutters, its obvious im lagging, i dont need more speed, i need more of something else, what can i do?

    • +1

What games are you playing and what is the sever IP addy?

Are you on wifi or ethernet cabling?

      • Smite. By a cable. It was good up until 3 weeks ago, i havent changed anything

        • +1

Ask Aussie for help on their gaming post.

          • +1

@Twix: nice, that explains it, thanks
