264

Just saw this on Frugal Feeds -

In light of the COVID-19 health crisis, McDonald's is now selling hand sanitiser. It'll cost around $3.50 for a 50ml bottle - pricing, size and bottles may vary by store. 100% of proceeds profits will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities. You can get it through drive thru, in-store or ordering through the app.

How much of the 100% to Ronald McDonald house actually goes to people in need vs. the managers and executives of the charity?

  • +9

It's 100% of profits according to my app notification, so it really comes down to how they feel like doing their accounting. Potentially they could choose to say they're making no profit on these after their expenses.

    @chickendinner123

According to this 92.7% of funds go towards services RMH delivers.

Your link outlines the operations of the U.S. branches of the charity. My links in response to the first comment outline the Australian ones.

More effective if they give this to their staff not that customers

  • Even burger flippers are selling sanitisers too…

  • +1

If I wanted to donate to RMHC I would donate to RMHC, and not buy some overpriced hand sanitizer

    • +6

Average price of 50ml sanitiser is $2-4, regularly sitting at $3….

Not sure what your issue is with all proceeds going to charity rather than profit at fairly standard pricing for something The general public has been crying out for.

      • +3

te public was crying out for it weeks and months ago. Honestly now i'm a bit over everywhere selling it.

      • +1

Others are saying it is not 'all proceeds' going to charity; just the 'profits'.

  • What's the 'proceeds"?

    • +8

Apparently 92.7% according to Charity Navigator. They actually give RMHC a perfect score across several metrics.

Don't generalise, all charities are not the same.

    • +1

Regardless of whether this charity is a scam or not, charities in general are much better equipped to reach larger groups of people with greater efficacy than going "straight to" individuals.

All the discussions about which money goes well… have any of you ever had to use their services? Because if you haven't you should shut up!

When my DD was in the hospital, it was the RMH that had a place in the hospital for food, drink and play equipment. We never used the 'apartments' they have for those who have to travel. But the RMH break room at the hospital gave us a small amount of sanity during a terrible time. The local hospital's tea room was an empty room with vending machines, yet the RMH room was filled with tea and coffee and equipment to reheat food and drink. It also had a HUGE amount of play equipment and areas for the adults to try and relax.

Do all their money go to charity? Even if its only 5% of each dollar I will still donate because I don't see any other charities spending money stocking and staff these places. Or buying houses/apartments near the hospital to give free accommodation to people in times when they really need it.

I don't agree with your last statement. If only a small percentage is going to the actual cause, you have to wonder where the majority is getting frittered away.

I don't support alot of charities because I feel like they pay their management and CEOs excessive wages and leave the scraps to the people who actually need it.

People need to be more selective on which charities they give to and should do research before giving away their hard-earned money to anyone.

Same with buying retail items when the (undefined) 'profits' go to a charity.

      • +2

I think a big difference here is I have seen the benefit of this charities work. The good it does day in and day out for people.

no one questions that RMHC is a creat cause, and does so much good for gravely ill kids, and their parents.

My whole point is that, as others have said, the "profits" will be given to RMHC, which is unclear how much profit per bottle is, and there are ways to manipulate this data however they want.

Also for me, I'm sick of everyone putting a "spin" on selling hand sanitiser that they couldn't get rid of at the height of the pandemic.

      • these charities are scam - only fraction of amount goes to people in need. if you want to help people in need - go straight to them.

I think that's what he was responding to

        • He does have a point

Give me $100 and I'll buy a bottle of nescafe and deliver it to my local hospital. $90 goes towards my "expenses".

10% goes towards charitable cause, I'll pm you my bank details. My charity application is still being reviewed by acnc and the ato

you would find that besides money raised by donations McDonalds also does some contributions out of their own revenue stream, just like the way they sponsor local footy clubs, etc.

I'm sure if people are really interested, rather then speculating, they could check how the money raised for RMH is spent as part of their annual report which they would need to submit, rather than speculating.

Reminds me of people who said the Supercheap ToolPro socket set was made in china, I checked in store and it was made in Taiwan ….. people not checking facts back to source, people said 1 year warranty I checked, it's 30 years …..

Please check facts, back to a credible source, not social media, becasue some people will perpetuate hearsay and mis-information.

$3.50 is the standard price for 50ml Dettol brand hand sanitiser, so this isn't a bargain. It's also currently $2.99 at Amazon. There are cheaper generics as well.

Additionally, having McDonald's staff sell this alcohol based hand sanitiser is a cruel insult when their own workplace provided hand sanitiser does not contain a sufficient level of alcohol to be effective against COVID-19. [1] [2]

Disclosure: I'm a Woolworths employee and RAFFWU member.

  • +3

Are you guys kidding? This is not even remotely a bargain, and I'm sure 'proceeds' has some sort of hidden agenda there.

  • +3

As crayner pointed out. This is standard price and not a bargain.

  • +2

    Not a bargain. Standard price.
