Have been waiting for the price on this to drop for over 6 months. Already had the batteries and 2 other drills in the range and didn't want to invest in a different system. Gets decent reviews considering it's a cordless. Credit camelcamelcamel for the price tracking.

  • Can you turn off the hammer function?

  • +7

great price, but can't commit to another system

  • +1

How much are batteries if bought separately?

    • +9

I bought two Porter-cable batteries - 4 AH (actual) that works with minimal modification on the battery case (filing the case a bit) for 20 AUD each.

      https://tinyurl.com/ycqpht8b

PC and Stanley are part of the same family. If you don't mind a yellow tool with a red battery go for it.

PS: the batteries are not original, but the cells are Samsung exactly as the FatMax batteries.

      • +1

The batteries you linked are 20v, but this drill is 18v? Will this work?

        • +3

          3.6 volts (nominal) x 5 cells = 18 volts
          4 volts (maximum) x 5 cells = 20 volts

20V is the same as 18V batteries.

      • Damn that ends up being pretty damn good value

      • Thanks for the tip! Any recommendations on the charger to buy?

      • Thx for the link to aftermarket batteries, I knew they'd exist but never went looking…how are you finding it compared to the OEM versions?

        • Cells are same as OEM, really.

These are marketed as 5Ah but they are actually 4Ah. Samsung INR18650 cells inside (don't remember the full code now) 2Ah / 20A continuous discharge current - which brings the battery capacity to 4Ah (parallel of 2 series of 5 batteries).

          So far so good!

      • Thanks for the link. Bookmarked for later. I have a whole bunch of Stanley/PC tools (Thanks to Masters great deals) which I'm very happy with. It's been a few years so I'm sure the 2AH batteries will eventually give in. Nice to have a cheap option.

      • Any guidance on how to make them fit? I'm seriously tempted to get a couple, just want to understand how much effort is required

      • Great, thanks. It looks like I can use these with my Black+Decker tools with a minor modification as well. Are you sure they are genuine Samsung batteries? $20 is really cheap for a 5Ah (even if it is actually 4Ah) battery.

        • +1

It is actually 4Ah and not 5 Ah - as I wrote above.

Single cells are wrapped as Samsung, I do not have tools to understand if these are legit or fake. But 2Ah -18650 cells are not rocket science. ALso it may be a pricing error as the same battery is sold elsewhere for ~ 50 to 70 AUD.

@Starflex: Thanks for your reply. Will buy a couple.

      • Starflex did you end up buying a porter cable charger or stanley one to charge the battery? I bought the porter cable battery, now having trouble finding a charger.

        • +1

I already had the charger - from the combo at Master of a few years ago :-(

    • Remember the days when that set was $75 at Masters and people were walking out with trolleys full of it.

    • Ebay - along with cashback.

  • This vs Ozito or Ryobi?

    • I would personally buy one of the others purely because you get them from Bunnings and warranty is easy.

      • +2

Most tradies I know go with ozito and ryobi for this exact reason. Combined with the fact you have people looking to sell your tools to cash converters on your behalf, I don't think many really go for the top end stuff.

I've just been through the process of getting a Stanley product fixed (air compressor) and all up it took nearly 2 months simply for someone to take ownership of the problem and take the necessary action - it's in being fixed right now. Many calls & emails went unanswered.

To Stanley Australia's credit they've agreed to fix it even though it's outside of warranty by a couple of months, however this was only due to the runaround I was given for what should be a fairly simple process.

It's put me off buying any Stanley products in the future

        • So was it the seller or Stanley that gave you the run around?

  • ANy deal on the 18V vacuum cleaner?

  • +4

just a warning these work good as a drill driver but are useless as a hammer

    • +8

Agreed, you are much better off buying an actual hammer instead of trying to knock nails in with this

    • +2

I have both (but other brands). I've found cordless hammer drills to be ok on plaster, sandstone and softer bricks but they'll create more mess by sliding off towards soft areas than a decent corded hammer drill. My corded hammer drill does a clean job every time and I end up kicking myself for not going with it in the first place.

    • +1

It depend on what drill bits (by brand) you are using.

      • What brand of drill bits would you recommend? I used some borrowed aldi ones with a borrowed Ozito hammer drill recently and both were rubbish. I'd only use it sporadically so don't need pro level, but definitely want something better than the aldi ones

  • where do i find the right battery for this?

    • +1

      My advice is: -

BUY tool with battery and not skin only.

Unless if you have existing battery which is the same brand to skin device.

  • +2

Stanley are about to release their 20v range hence the drop
a 4ah battery direct from Stanley in box hill is $150 - Supercheap had them for $80 a while back but no stock

Supercheap dont stock this range any more, you are lucky to find the odd piece at a store, i went into a Ballarat store and saw an angle grinder cordless for $100

My thoughts on the Fatmax - using on a Cordless Saw is it works, but no stamina and they go flat quickly, so good for the odd job, but hoping OZITO is a better option

    • 18v and 20v are the same, no? (See comment above by zealmax)

      • +1

10% more power according to marketing
Ignore enginering they only deal in fact

  • Wasnt going to get it but all gone anyways!

  • +2

bought one but had to look this up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cqr9CxDYj0I but really dont need a hammer

  • +1

Keep in mind - 18V and 20V is just a marketing exercise.

Lo-Ion cells have a voltage that change from 3.7 (flat) to 4.2V (fully charged).

18V or 20V have the same number of cells (5) - hence they are just marketing in different ways the same thing.

  • +1

    …and it's gone

  • +1

Thanks OP - got one on time.

  • Glad I had bought the Bosch blue brushless kit, better deal than this IMO.

  • Wow I wonder how DeWalt feel about the design of this!

    • +1

As far as I know they're both made by the same parent company (Black and Decker). Fatmax is meant to be lower quality than DeWalt, but still decent enough for a home user.

    • same parent company, stanley black and decker…so im sure they're flattered…. the designs actually EXACTLY the same as Porter Cable tools (also one of their brands), just in yellow..

  • +1

I got this from MASTERS (before closing down), very good, never let me down, drill easily on brick.

    • I did too, but it's not brushless. Still good enough, though I did splurge on the big Bosch Blue kit a couple of weeks ago

    • Yep i got these fab items from Masters too. Now I still have it and using Dewalts machine tools from now on.

  • +1

One day i swear I’m going to get one of these deals lol 😂
