Woah. Is there a version 2 coming out?

Might have to finally use these JB hifi gift cards with a price match.

      points to Google

I use it in the kitchen to follow along to Nat's what i reckon. Ensuring I don't make shitty pasta from a packet mix.

      • +10

        On ya, champion!

        F* jar sauce!

    • +5

I have 2 of these, one in my kitchen is useful for asking about recipes, measurements, timers, playing music, broadcasting a message to the google home minis around the house. The one in my bedroom I replaced my alarm clock with, mainly using it for telling me the weather and playing the news when I wake up. also turning off all my smart lights from it is pretty useful.

    • +2

I'll bite. We picked up two when JB was doing BOGOF.

I'll list below what we use the Hubs for that minis/homes can't do.

      • Photos. We use Google Photos so it's nice seeing recent snaps of the kids or us in the kitchen or bedroom
      • Videos. Has been used to watch an episode or something from YouTube while in the kitchen.
      • Clock. The display can also be set very dim (as in no real light glow from it in the middle of the night) and the clock is still quite readable
      • Timers - whilst minis/homes can do timers, it is nice seeing the time remaining. Likewise for most things that minis/homes can already do (i.e. music - song information, artwork, seek bar) - it can be nice having that visual information

One big thing they use in the advertising for these is cooking and recipe's. The feature is there and it is good, but didn't really work with the way we think and work with cooking - we prefer having the full recipe on a piece of paper in front of us, rather than a screen we have to talk to to move on or touch.

      • rather than a screen we have to talk to to move on or touch

You don't need to touch it to move to the next step of the recipe - just say "hey Google, next".

        • +2

You don't need to touch it to move to the next step of the recipe - just say "hey Google, next".

          I know, hence

rather than a screen we have to talk to to move on or touch

          Or, better worded

rather than a screen we have to talk to or touch to move to the next step

    • +9

I just have the little Nest, no screen.
      Main uses for us is
a shopping list, need milk when at the fridge. Hey google add milk to the shopping list. The list is on my and my wife’s phone for when we shop.
Hey google is Kmart open, it then tells me my closest Kmart (or whatever store) is open and what time they close.
Ask about weather, hey google do I need an umbrella.
Add appointments, hey google make an appoint to see the doctor. It then asks what date and time if you don’t tell it first.
Set reminders, hey google remind me to turn off the sprinkler in 30 minutes.
Watching a tv show, hey google when was 007 Thunderball made?
Hey google good morning, tells me any appointments, the weather and plays abc radio news.
      Lots of stuff like that.

And hey google, make a fart noise…different fart each time.

Note that it seems these price updates flow through to all retailers (for the Google stuff)

  • Hey OP where is catalogue from? This a link from Sydney catalogue

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/catalogue/latest-catalogue/?g…

    • I’m in Victoria. Closest store is Ferntree Gully. I’m heading there soon to grab one or two. I better take the catalogue!
The catalogue came in the mail yesterday.

    • It's 128 on that now

  • Despite being under the same umbrella, Bunnings has them for $128 online. So maybe chance a 10% price beat there?

    • FYI. According to Bunnings website. Bunnings is selling Google Home Hub, while listed on this deal is the Google Nest Hub.

      • Annoying because other than the name there isn't a difference

        • As long as the model is the same you should be fine right? Might have to go try this afternoon.

          • +3

@stickyfingers: They can be super precious with their price beat. I remember trying to get a price beat on a hedge trimmer but because the model number was slightly different, I was rejected despite it being an identical product. It was a product number made for bunnings.

            • +1

              @giventofly:

It was a product number made for bunnings.

Yeh, stuff like this is where Bunnings/OW need to be pulled up on misleading advertising. Sure there are still lots of products that you can price match, but what purpose does Bunnings/OW have other than seeking to prevent price matching, therefore actively diminishing the consumers ability to price match under their policy.

              • @tomsco: I was wondering if manufacturers dislike it? But they won't lose money on it would they?

    • +2

Yup, I got a price beat from Bunnings. Came out to $88.20. happy! 😊

      • Are you really sure? The salesperson must be new. How did you convince them it's same product?

        • +2

I think the lady was in a hurry. She didn't even check in her own system, just saw it on my phone and checked that the picture matched the product.

I think I just got lucky.

  • -2

    Looks like a pricing error

    • Nope, the catalogue in my letterbox this morning shows $98. (Brisbane)

  • +4

Any deals on the hub max?

  • I'm confused now. I just dropped my kids off to school and found an Officeworks catalogue at one of nearby streets. It's actually same as OP catalogue image..

    • +7

That is insane!!! I can't believe Officeworks printed two of the same catalogue.

      Dodododo

    Still $128 on the website

  • Anyone had any luck in store? I might take this photo and show to them see if that works.

  • +2

you are all can see Officeworks catalogue in store, I bought one this morning price $98.

    • Is this in NSW?

      • I bought in VIC 3150

    • +1

Can anyone confirm the same price in QLD?
Current online catalogue still has it for $128 ☹️
      https://imgur.com/a/6njcoTY

      • +1

If you can go to Officeworks and look at their recent Catalogue you will see the price. Someone confirmed catalogue show $98 in Brisbane.

      • +3

Catalogue In my mailbox in Brisbane is same as ops…$98

        • +1

          Cool, thanks for the updates!

  • Got one.
    Chalk only, not charcoal.
They had to override the price as it still shows $128.

  • +2

Can this price beat with Bunnings?

    • Can confirm that Bunnings won't price beat. Different model I was told.

      • on the box it says the Google Home Hub is rebranded/renamed to Google Nest Hub

        • Yeah you are so so right. Bunnings might price match now… unless their box says different

          • @Lone star: https://www.androidauthority.com/google-nest-hub-max-vs-goog…

yea definitely ask to see the box. But they may still argue it's a different "product code" knowing how pricing works the moment OW change it online on the 11th, JB, HN TGG follows…pretty sure they will too

            • @pippohippo: Haha. The link you posted is not about Google Home Hub vs Google Nest Hub. Anyway, not so sure whether other retailers would follow OW. I missed out this deal and have been waiting for other retailers to match.

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/542335

But this Google Nest Hub Deal isn't so bad so I bought one today.

              • @Lone star: the first sentence

At Google I/O 2019 Google announced the new Nest Hub Max, alongside the announcement the Google Home Hub will be officially rebranded as the Google Nest Hub.

And yes, I am planning to get a Hub Max when a bargain strikes sub 300 :P

Your link refers to Alexa system though

    • I just got it price beat from bunnings. I guess I got lucky. :)

      • How did you convince them? Were they ever in doubt?

        • Not really, as I said, I think the sales rep just wanted to get it over with. Just saw it was officeworks and matched the product photo with the picture on the box.

          • @polarq: Haha… didn't realise it was you who wrote earlier.. however which store is it? Are you in Sydney? I might try it tomorrow.

            • @Lone star: No worries. 👍
I am in Queensland unfortunately. The Bunnings I visited is in Keperra.

  • can it use as a regular Bluetooth speaker? or do you must plug in ?

    • 3 Ways to Bluetooth on the Google Home Hub
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WSblQ9Fk1c

    • Some people have issues with Bluetooth dropping out.

There are no audio ports on the Nest Hub.

Using the Google Home app you can link music services to stream to a Google Smart Speaker. Spotify premium works great. Spotify Family can have issues assigning the right voice to the right accounts.

You can also stream Music from Google smart speakers and screens to other smart speakers (SONOS) TV's (most), Android boxes (Shield) or Chrome Casts.

  • I bought a Lenovo display a while back which supports casting but not Netflix.. Stupid but yea.. Can you can from Netflix to this? Works wonders for the kid in the morning when I wake up lol

    • No, you cannot cast Netflix to it. Just checked again now. I got one of these when they were still called the Google Home Hub.

      • Yea been reading you can't but some say you can.. I think they might have something else lol. Thanks for confirming.

        • All good, no worries.

Besides Netflix, it also doesn't work for Prime Video.

Of the streaming services that I've tested, it does work for Stan, Disney+, Foxtel GO, SBS on Demand, and (not surprisingly) YouTube.

    • I have Chromecasts on all my tvs in various rooms and use my Google Home to cast from Netflix no problems.

  • Get this or the Amazon Echo 8?

    • +1

Depends if you alexa house or google house

      • Hey Siri

        • +10

Hey Siri Turn on TV, Ok Calling John

    • +1

Voice recognition is better on Google for Australian accents.

Amazon has better integration with 3rd party devices.

Both can be frustrating. Pick which feature is more important to you.

      • Lucky i dont sound bogan

        • +2

If I meant bogan I would have wrote bogan.

Howard, Abbott and Rudd would have issues. Scotty from marketing is too busy planing his reelection to test.

    • I was given an Echo dot a while back when my connection was crappy and Google home kept whinging it lost connection.

Whenever we asked for music for my kids if asked for let it go from frozen, we'd get "playing let it go instrumental …." Or other crap it never played what we wanted, so we have it away put up with google till i got a new router which solved it.

Pity google music is so fricking expensive.

  • none at officeworks lewisham

    • If convenience you could pay now and pickup then they got stock.

  • Probably find that alot of the officeworks stores will hide stock in the back

    • Why would they do it? Then they have to count the stock later this month?

      • I have seen it happen in city officeworks, when one of the trainees went out the back to find stock and the manager got cranky with them for bringing it out

        Was many years ago

        • That manager must have had a bad day or a dispute with the customer. Anyway I dont think it would happen often. Isn't it if the store you manage can sell as much of the stock it would look "better" for you?

          • +1

@Lone star: The store is taking a loss if it selling under the normal price

    • That link says $98 for me

      • Yeah updated now. It was $128 when posted.

  • I heard a few reviews that basically said despite this (and the max version) being a touch screen, it isnt very intuitive for streaming things like youtube or netflix (i dont even think you can get netflix on these?) - which if true, kind of disappoints me.

I know its only 100 bucks, but I would've thought that if google had something like this but with full browsing/tablet functionality like a smart speaker/iPad combo you keep in your kitchen, it would be a game changer. I also hear the speaker quality isnt any better than the google home mini i got for free with spotify.

Can anyone give some hands on experience to convince me the 100 bucks is worth it?

    • +3

The 7" screen is too small to watch a netflix show. I have the max in the kitchen, its good for the youtube for the missus, but why would you watch a movie when you have a tv in the house

      • +6

as tv is used to play peppa pig n bluey all day ;-p

      • yeah i wouldnt watch anything on the 7, ideally would get the max, but often watch/listen to TV shows while cooking, and dont want to install a TV in the kitchen

        • +1

The speaker is heaps better then the mini

    • +1

I bought the 7" for the bedroom as a photo frame, the max is great quality for a 10" photo frame, and thats the main feature of them other then google assistant. Very interactive shopping list as well is great feature

    • +1

but you can stream anything chromecast can accept. I use it primarily as a photo frame and GA for Current forecast, live traffic & ending arguments with my 5yo. When sport is on, i have the cricket, footy or whatever streaming on it all day so its there but outta the way. Sometimes the kids watch YT or Netflix cause they get a kick outta ordering it around.

  • Google still has not made much changes/options for the home screen display (eg. wheather and Clock together)

    • amazon echo show 5 has good bedside clock display options

      • Yes, just found out , but the echo 8 does not seem to have neither (prefer larger screen 7-8")
I just want to make the weather, date and clock as permanent homescreen as shown on their boxes.

  • +1

Has any in NSW tried to get one yet ?

    • They are not matching without the physical catalogue.
