  • I'm building a PC at the moment, all i've got currently is Ryzen 9 3900x. But looking to find a placeholder graphics card just until graphics cards come down (or new versions come out)

Could this be a good option, or is there a better option out there for slightly more? Additionally, is there any risk of this wrecking any other parts of my PC if it's an unreliable part? Thanks for the info.

    • +2

The only thing I'd worry about is that it is used. Compatibility shouldn't be a problem.

      • If it's used, is it possible that it would short out any other parts of my PC, or ruin anything? I don't mind if the part itself doesn't last too long due to it being used, as it would just be temporary, but I just don't want any damage to other components of the PC.
On second thoughts, there might be something better on Gumtree/marketplace for my purposes.

        Thanks mate

        • +4

It'll be coming from China so likely will take a month to get here. GPUs generally won't damage any other components if they fail, I wouldn't be concerned all

          • @scottySK: Thank you, I think I'll pull the trigger on this then! Hopefully it'll last me long enough to make myself wait for RTX3000 line!

        • +3

Given there is only one review to the seller. I think you are not even going to get a used 1050ti card.

JUST $50…! The GTX 1050 Ti Scam

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ItgS6KXI10

        • If you're worried about this being used why would you then decide to look on Gumtree?

      • yeah …..are these mining rig leftovers ?

    • +18

If you believe you will save >$50 by waiting for a few months or you really believe the next gen GPUs will be much better value for money, then you could consider.

      The downsides are:

      • Cheap Colorful graphics cards tend to have fans that make "colorful" noise (loud noise basically).
      • At this price and where the card will be shipped, it is a gamble whether this is really a 1050Ti. As much as we love a bargain deal, it is just too fishy.
      • It will take a long time to get it delivered I reckon.
      • Please ensure your Kogan account is secure and do not allow pre-auth or one-click payment or saved payment details for later (whatever it is called in Kogan). My mate's Kogan account was recently hacked.
      • +4

        This is exactly my thoughts.
Edit: I would emphasis the point about it being a gamble as to whether or not the unit is actually a 1050ti or some other GPU that has been flashed…

      • IMO, you shouldn't really save any credit card to any shopping website. Maybe just for ebay if you want airpods deals lmao.

        • +1

It was PayPal direct debit for my mate. He did not recall allowing that, and he hasn't touched his Kogan account for at least 2 years.

So many people enabled one click payment for feeBay Plus deals as you need that to have a chance to snatch some of those deals. Remember to remove that!!!

I am glad I blacklisted Kogan years ago.

You can get something cheaper on ebay, or a nvidia GT 710 2 gig of ram brand new for about $70. And it will get to you pretty quick unlike the above. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-NVIDIA-GT710-equipped-GT710-S…

No GPU fan for quiet use and it will do indie games and can be used in a HTPC etc afterwards.

      • +3

Your not seriously suggesting people pay $60 for a GT 710, any modern intergrated GPU is faster than it lol

        • +1

Well the Ryzen 3900X doesn't have integrated. And he was just after a placeholder. And if he wanted something quick you could get it. I never said it was the fastest graphics card alive, and it's still a popular card with the HTPC community.

      • +1

Why would you bother unless you needed it asap? The GTX 1050ti is about 7x faster.

        • -1

7x garbage is still garbage tho…

      • Depends what you want to play though. The 710 is like 8x slower (speed wise) then the 1050 TI. I'd 100% prefer having a 1050 TI on hand instead of a 710.
Not sure if these are underclockable but I know for silent operations I've just under clocked.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfhdXb-OjZY

The title of this youtube video match nicely with this item.

$50 is too cheap for even a second hand card.

  • +7

“This product is located outside of Australia“.

What are the chances this is a reflash of a 750 etc that I have seen on YouTube etc that are sold on Aliexpress?

    Tempted for a HTPC rig.

    • I'm sceptical about it too but I purchased one seemed to be low enough to warrant the risk.

      • so you're comfortable with kogan aftersales support customer service if there is any ?

      • Yeah bugger it, got one too. No great loss if it doesn't work out.

      • PayPal should be able to do a better job than Kogan. I wouldn't purchase via credit card

    • +2

If your going HTPC, then you going to have to get something with h265 support.

Cheapest (new) is the GeForce GT 1030 (on the nvidia side of things).

Get the MSI GeForce GT 1030 2G LP OC. It has DP and HDMI. Almost all opther 1030's come with HDMI, and DVI.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/2G-LP-OC-GeForce-Graphics/dp/B072B…

I have one, and it works great for everything media related.

      • Cheapest (new) is the GeForce GT 1030 (on the nvidia side of things).

For much less than that, you can get a complete set-top-box with h265, e.g. Voda-TV i think. Or Mi Box.

They lack the 3D power of a dedicated card, but fine for video decoding. Why a HTPC in 2020?

        • To run 'Coinops Next' :)

          • @metalslaw: Integrated graphics will work fine for that, no?

I was using a raspberry pi for game emulators.

            • +1

@bargaino: Yes, but if you want to use only integrated gfx, then you need a skylake cpu or above for an integrated graphics (Intel HD Graphics 530) that will be able to decode h265.

I'm running an old 2600k system. Only needed to add a gt 1030, and now it functions as media, emulator, file, and backup server.

              Shrug, to each his own.

        • Because everytime a new video format/feature/encoding arrives, you can just update your software and PCs usually have enough CPU grunt to do the job.
If you're using a dedicated box then you're screwed when you need h.266, HDMI3.0, 8K, 12-bit decoding, and everything else that comes along 😁

          A simple video-card change added HDMI 2.0 4K support to my HTPC when I bought a 4K display…

will this end up like ebay fake 1050ti ?

    • +2

Almost definitely, used 1050ti's go for $150+.

  • I ordered a couple. Hoping it's not a scam. PayPal is generally pretty helpful if it is. Fingers crossed! Thanks for sharing

  • +5

Please note that Kogan Marketplace lacks a feedback system, unlike Amazon or ebay. Seller performance records are not displayed so proceed with caution when buying off unknown 3rd party sellers on Kogan.

    • who needs feedback when you have $50 a1050ti!

  • Link to this product on the Colorful website: https://en.colorful.cn/product_show.aspx?mid=102&id=1794

    From the website:
Established in 1995, Colorful is a brand with a 20+ year history. It is a comprehensive company that holds the largest share in the Chinese graphics card market, integrating independent development, production, and sales. Also, it is a strategic partner of NVIDIA, AMD, and INTEL in China.

    • +5

colorful is definitely a legit long time brand , but not sure about the seller

  • Well if this is anthing to go off it seems like it exists on other sites https://www.banggood.com/COLORFUL-GTX1050Ti-Mini-OC-4G-GDDR5…

    • +2

Colourful is a popular card manufacturer in Asian markets

      • Yep, I bought my Colorful GeForce GTX 1080TI Kudan in Bic Camera, Akihabara back in 2018. Still going strong!

    • +1

It's quite easy for anyone to use a stock photo in any listing. At this price, I am cynical about whether you will actually get a real 1050Ti.

  • +13

LOL 100% fake. Get ready for your gts 450's.

    • +1

Hopefully at least a GeForce 2 MX!

      • +1

        lucky to get tnt2

  • Sounds kosher

    • kosher kya chu ?

  • I'm assuming we can request a refund from Kogan if it's fake?

    • Hope so. It's till a third of the usual price.

    • You can request it, but whether you'll actually get anything is another question.

Given that the chance it's real is practically zero, just don't bother…

    • thanks learned something new

    • +1

Yeah so say its not as described - breach of ACL - make sure you pay with paypal + Credit card

  • If it’s fake, will I get a refund and also be able to keep the card due to Kogan not wanting to pay return fees?

  • +1

If this is not fake, you'd be getting a ex-mining card….

  • thats exactly what i want and is super cheap. of course not getting it because you know what they say - if its too good to be true… GL if anyone wants to bet their time/money

    • +3

I'll request a refund / charge back on credit card if it's fake… Kogan is an Australian company and still has to comply with the law 🙂

      • no doubt you would but yeah

Refund you the amount you paid.

        But then there's this…

    • You know what else they say - ya gotta be in it to win it!

  • im guessing this wont fit in a low profile case right?

    • no it wont :(

    • It's a mini only lengthwise, not height wise so still won't fit an Optiplex

    • It's still small so should be able to use a PCIe riser and fit it in there somehow.

  • Where does it say it's used?

    • Could be new doesn't say either way so for the price I'd assume used.

    • +6

      used to be a 650ti :D

  • +2

    A free loan to Kogan.

  • I'd be wary. There's a lot of fake 1050/ti cards going around, especially coming out of China and HK.

    Case in point: https://youtu.be/f3S38HYrwXo

This is probably slightly better because at least it looks like it's the correct amount of VRAM, but I'd still avoid it.

  • +6

No way this is real. Don’t waste your time waiting for a fake to come from overseas then trying to get a refund from Kogan

  • I'll roll the dice. Nice upgrade from onboard graphics regardless of fake or not.
I think would be feasible if they have a heap used from mining rigs or there abouts ex China. Or sub quality.

    • +2

Would mining rigs be using mini 1050Tis?

      • -1

        Low tpd.
TPD is a killer for profit.

      • Yeah no idea. More fishy by the second. Used being another red flag.

        • Cancelled order. The YouTube video tipped me over…

  • Please don't play any competitive match game when you're using this card

  • +2

No way this is legit 1050ti. Even an ex mining 4gb 1050ti is worth well more than $100 probably closer to $150. I sold a 2gb 1050 a couple weeks ago for $115 on fleebay.

  • Well, just brought 100. Paypal has got my back if this is some sorta fake GPU or just a straight-up scam.

    • Also, Kogan.com does apparently too.

      • +1

I mean I had never heard of Kogan.com till today so that doesn't really put any faith in me haha. But Paypal buyer protection is best in class.

        • +1

You’ve never heard of Kogan? They’re reputation for returns and warranty claim is not good. A PayPal dispute might be quick and easy or it might not be. I’d rather avoid the potential headache this might end up being

          • @FireRunner: Well, that's why I paid via Paypal. Don't know why the seller would even bother with a fraudulent auction with such a methods in place. I mean that's why I brought 100, if there is the off chance that it was legit I might as well win big.

            • @Ahumblegod:

              just brought 100

So you brought 100 of them in? 🙂

Assuming you actually bought 100, are you willing to send 100 of them back in the worst case scenario?

This product is shipped via the most economical route and is estimated to be delivered within 2-3 weeks of placing your order.

2-3 weeks with cheapest postage method… Are we really that gullible?

              • +1

@netsurfer: Yep, Fully backed by Paypal. Whats the worst that happens I get 100 fake GPUS that the seller has to pay return shipping on them? It seems dumb not to risk it.

                • @Ahumblegod: Entice the seller to run away with the money. Kogan's marketplace system isn't mature enough so you get zero seller feedback information as pointed out by scrimshaw.

Sure, if it is dodgy, you will get your money back eventually, but given the current situation, feeBay is giving sellers 90 days before buyers can raise item not received case. I am guessing Kogan will do the same. Obviously, you hope them to be real so you probably will wait up to the full delivery window. You have spare cash to burn, then it is not an issue.

Also, even if the seller paid for the return postage, unless the seller agreed to accept lodgement confirmation from courier being enough to do the full refund (most sellers don't), you could be waiting for them to reach the seller before full refund will be issued.

                  • @netsurfer: Yeah, been pretty helpful with selling stuff that eBay has done that, a lot of international stuff via auspost just sits at the airport for a month before leaving the country. I am sure that the seller will see bulk order and just cancel them if they are planning on sending fake video cards. It would be the single card orders that they would ship fake cards to. But then again im trying to guess the logic behind scamming.

Eitherway in it for the long game

            • @Ahumblegod: Far out, $5000 dropped on almost certainly fake GPUs. The fact they over 100 ‘used’ cards further raises my suspicion. You certainly are bold perhaps foolhardy in purchasing so many. I guess you’re almost certain to get your money back eventually.

    • +1

      No way you bought 100

      • He'd be up for GST at the border too

      • I did haha, But yeah decided to refund after messaging the buyer to see how many they had and their response was "buy as many as you can"

  • From a quick skim at least they have all information correct unlike other listing on ebay, aliexpress etc.

  • For someone wanting a cheap Plex Box adding this into a system with the driver hack and you'll have 15x 1080P streams, so long as you are using a slightly modern CPU!
