1 of the best thing I bought this year. I was very sceptical of it because of its high prices but after using it I can see why people recommend them.

  • +1

Is it worth 4 times the Mi Box? I just want to play MKV files through external HD and watch Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Sound is from a Samsung soundbar, which I had issues with HDMI connections before, but now solved.

    • +7

For what its worth, my MI box required required a restart at least once every few days as the result of locking up or stalling. Since i got the Nvidia shield
      -zero restarts required
      -its much faster/responsive
-the remote works seamlessly with all my existing equipment
-the plex client can handle anything i throw at it with zero lag
-can also now stream pc games from my gaming desktop in the study onto the TV in the lounge room.

      • +1

Can you use wired controls into the Shield on streamed games? I want to use the TV in my living room for Forza, would I be able to stream Forza from my PC in my bedroom to the Shield and connect a USB steering wheel to it?

    • +1

      Mi box for $92?

    • +1

I doubt it, my mi box works fine for those.

Also never had to restart it, works flawlessly everytime

      • +2

Mi Box had its issues, such as when it received the Oreo update and disabled the surround sound from passthrough. But it was fixed shortly after through FW update.

Certainly not to the point where it requires frequent restarts.

        • Mine needs restarts due to being unresponsive, seems quite common from comments on various threads. I have had 3 mibox3s and the issue is prevalent in all of them , not sure about s model tho.

It definitely has a lot of issues and quirks but it comes with the pricetag, since I got the shield 2017 I've been set with no quirks or issues, it comes at a hefty price but damn does it just work. 2019 model though, I can't say I can justify the pro for $100 on top of 2017. Benefit of AI upscaling is there but worth $100+? Eh.

          • @rekkore: I have the s model so maybe that issues been fixed. No issues with mine, use it everyday

    • +3

No not for your use I wouldn't recommend spending the extra.

  • +1

What's a good price for the standard 2019 model?

  • +1

Worth the upgrade from the previous gen?

    • +1

You beat me to it 👇

  • +2

Has anyone who as owned the previous model (skinny remote) upgraded to this?

    Much of a performance bump?

    • +1

Tempted but no. The skinny version is still going fine and fast. I can't justify paying circa $150 for a bit more features given that skinny is holding the fort well. I may consider upgrading to PRO if it goes below $300 when everything settles but until then, it's a no for me

    • +1

I upgraded the one in my home theatre for upgraded Dolby stuff for my TV, which I'm glad I got. In my bedroom I have the slim and I really don't notice the difference for media consumption. I don't play games on there or anything. Kodi is probably the heaviest application I run and it seems the same on both.

      • Cheers, have you found the Toblerone remote an improvement over the slimline?

        • It is nicer, takes up more room in the drawer because I use a Harmony remote. It is definitely an improvement though.

  • +2

Best price yet given the RRP is $399. Still overpriced in my opinion. $300 would've been more fitting but given manufacturing shortages due to COVID, we probably won't see it go that low until the end of the year at least

  • +2

For those with the 2017 (previous) model and envy the new remote (backlit, ir function, AAA batteries) this is also compatible with older devices.

Soon to be released in Oz, it currently sells for us$29 in North America.

A very worthy purchase for ~aud$50 IMHO.

    • Where can you buy the new toblerone remote for $50 AUD? thinking about getting it for my 2017 model. thanks

      • The website says soon to be released in AU.

  • +3

Got one of these about 2 years ago for around $299 including a game controller.
    Fantastic piece of kit.
I'd say $299 was a fair price, but $367.20 without a game controller is stretching the friendship a little.
Not a bargain by my personal criteria and based on past prices, but the USD is probably responsible for them no longer being sub $300.

Just realised mine is 2017, still its the same hardware but the bastards have not ever bothered to add atmos etc nor upgrade it to Android 9…
That shits me, identical hardware, update the software, call it something new and charge more.

    • Just realised mine is 2017, still its the same hardware but

The newer version has a faster processor, albeit only 25% faster.

not ever bothered to add atmos etc nor upgrade it to Android 9…

The 2017 edition uses Android 9 Pie, the same as the current version.

      • Also brings Dolby Vision & Atmos for Netflix unlike 2017 version.

        • And I think 4k up scaling (for what it's worth).

  • Cheers OP. Just bought one. As others have commented, the Shield Pro is not a 'bargain', but I've been eyeing this box for a while and the price is going up, not down, even in the US (at B&H anyway). Mibox is too underpowered for me and the tiny storage is a deal breaker. I prefer faster, bigger Chinese boxes I can hack and load up with apps but my last one (Mecool KM1) drove me nuts trying to fix firmware glitches, so I sent it back. Time to cough up for the top box with upgrades and decent support, at a decent price.

    • I had the mi box before buying the shield. The shield is a very significant upgrade, particularly if you are outputting in 4k.

  • got one from B&H at launch amazing unit, its hooked up to a series 9 65 inch Samsung with a q90r soundbar & plex, this thing plays everything i throw at it highly recommend.

  • I love my shield, and as per previous comments I didn't know what the fuss was about till I started using it. Just works perfectly seamless with Plex (server), Netflix, and Prime. But what I was thinking was that when the next console generation hits, if they will be my next go to for streaming seeing as they appear to have remotes already included? All depends on the plex integration I think.

  • Is this worth that much more/better than a Odroid N2?:

    https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-n2-with-4gbyte-ram/

Around $100 USD with a case and plug.

    • Odroid N2 is great if all you want to do is run Kodi. But if you want a box that will play anything, and the family can use it easily, then you need an Android TV box, and the Shield Pro is top of that heap.

      • Have a Sony smart tv that has all the apps, so yeah a Kodi box that can run some emulators would be all that's needed that also plays 4k files flawlessly I've heard the shield has issues with 4k

  • Lots of people are asking about it’s worth…and few months back even I was on same side….but this box is beast. I bet android TV experience couldn’t be better. If you can afford and looking for best…go for it.

  • Got one. Thanks OP.

The Pro and Tube are both on sale at Kogan now too ($369 / $259) for those with Kogan credit:

    https://www.kogan.com/au/shop/televisions/media-players-set-…

  • I would also suggest the FireTV stick for under $70, supports VLC and works very well

    • I really can’t agree with this comment. I find it slow. Plex was not overly happy running on it, I had to install Plex for Kodi to get it play things properly. I also have a Vodafone tv which is better. I have numerous cheap Chinese s905 boxes which are worse as support has ended. The odroid n2 running Kodi wth the plexkodiconnect add-on is by far the best experience if you don't need streaming apps. Apple TV would be the ideal solution if only it supported Dolby Atmos.

  • 1st Gen Nvidia shield still kicking just awesome. Ordered 2 new remotes as apparently will work with old models hope it does as remote just died completely not complaining its a 5 year old remote. Bought 2 new shield Tv a couple of months ago and Atmos is a great addition to it.

    • +1

Ordered 2 new remotes as apparently will work with old

      The 2019 Toblerone remote?

  • -2

over priced for the older model

    • Isn't this the most recent model?

  • +1

Tempted to buy this so I can finally play 4k UHD remuxes but might wait for the rumoured new Google TV and Apple TV 4k.

  • +1

Always almost buy, then recall that Vodafone tv is fine and has a TV tuner

    • +1

VTV is terrific value but picture quality is average and it struggles with high res videos and demanding apps. Not the box for a 4K TV but I've got one plugged into an old Panasonic plasma and it does a great job.

      • Hmm, ok. So do you run Homerun tuner on the shield or something?

  • If you are buying this for purely for Dolby Vision, as I was, beware that there is a issue with colours (mainly reds) with Dolby Vision output.

  • anyone have this 2019 version (particularly pro) and using the google assistant that's built-in ? how good is it and does ti basically replace having to get a separate google home device

  • Joyce Mayne finally got them in stock from the deal posted on 21st April, shipping today. Looking forward to comparing it to my old one!

  • Got one Thanks OP! Combined with the Woolies Ebay GC Deal brought it down to $332.20!

  • Is this a worthy upgrade from 2015 model?
