  • This or corsair? Which is the more popular brand?

    • +3

Brand does not matter with memory. Only the die, and this looks like Samsung C-die. I will update with validation. Samsung C-die is a strange overclocker, it can usually do 3200C15, 3600C17 and 3800C18 with 1.35V. It negatively scales with voltage at around 1.35V give or take 30mV.

Edit: Most certainly is as per this thread.

      • I've heard people mention/praise Samsung B-Die a few times. Is that the type we should be looking for?

        • +1

Yes, but it is quite difficult to acquire especially at a reasonable price. Samsung C-die is a weird overclocker and not a great one by any stretch of the imagination, but it is fine for non-overclockers.

        • 'B-Die' form what I've gather are IC that are produced at highest quality. Pretty much memory are produced in different factories have different quality control, which only matters in terms of Ryzen gen 1 (where memory was more sensitive), and extreme overclocking. That said B-Die are normally guarantee to work at rated speeds for 99% of the the motherboards out there. Google "b-die finder" and first link will help locate B-die based on memory model number.

But you're not missing out, im using a G.SKILL Flare X 2400C15 kit on my 2700x, thaipoon reports some weird hynix mfr die which i can auto xmp to 3200 C16 without any issue on an x570 board.

      • Can't edit, but a reminder that G.Skill Samsung C-die tends to misreport as B-die in Thaiphoon Burner.

  • +3

Noice, running this now with the 3900x, it good.

I assumed this was enough ram for a bit of photo editing. Boi was I wrong!

Retouching just 24Mp images with heaps of layers takes up almost 90% of the 32GB, tf!

    • +2

Haha yes… my old PC had 64GB. I thought it was overkill for the Premiere/AE/PS stuff I do, so when I built my new PC last year I went with 32GB as it was a painful $330 then. Now that it has dropped by quite a bit, it's time to upgrade! I keep hitting the 32GB ceiling now.

      • Are you aiming for 64GB!?

        • +1

Yeah, I usually run quite a few programs at once and have hit the 32GB ceiling many times. I typically run Premiere, Photoshop, AME, Audition, and a heap of Chrome windows among other things. I don't think 64GB is considered a lot for that sort of workload… it'd be a minimum for some people. :)

      • +1

I made the mistake of going from 64GB to 16. Was the worst few months and ruined an older model ssd by using it as a page file.

  • Hope that some of the CL14 (F4-3200C14D-16GVR) comes up for sale eventually but don't like my chances… :-(

    • B-die?

      • Yes, B-die. Looking for another 16GB :-)

        • B-die the GOAT. Apparently it's no longer being manufactured which sucks.

          • @Void: Personally not that great for ryzen 3000 hynix djr better value basically same performance.

3600 @ 16-19-19-39 and you've already got at least 99% of the performance available from my tests.

And that's against b-die at 3600 CAS14. It's irrelevant imo at higher frequencies

            • @4foxache: Never heard of DJR. The new B-die?

              • @Void: Its the new Hynix CJR can find it on modules like the G.Skill 4000@CL18 kits, basically a high frequency CJR. I wouldn't say its the new b-die but once you hit 3600+ plus I find lower latency than CL16 doesn't really give you any benefit. Ryzen 4000 series likely to support close to 4000 at 1:1 so good investment imo.

                • @4foxache: Well then I'll be getting my C-die to 4000C19 with that then. 2000 FCLK!

    • Not likely. The cheapest CL14 3200mhz 32gb kit according to pcpp is $338…

I hear the red ones are faster.. Is that true?

    • +3

Red makes everything faster, what makes you think it wouldn't apply to RAM?

      • +1

If that the case I'll just take a knee for this ram and pass..

        • I can't believe those idiots who buy RAM that isn't red. Pfft form over function amirite.

          • +1

@Void: Everyone should just buy RGB RAM. That way they can slow down the RAM to save power when not gaming by changing the color to blue.

            • @eug: Oh yeah I never thought of that!

            • +1

@eug: How do I know if a ram is RGB? Is there an identifier?

Please links a product that is RGB ram so I can understand what to look for.

              Thanks!

              • @cheapskateasian: Typically on the image it has a light strip on the top of the DIMM with multiple colours displayed. Also usually written in the title. Here is an example.

              • +2

@cheapskateasian: Not sure if serious, but just in case you are, it was a joke… RGB RAM is just RAM with colored lights. The colors won't affect the speed. Rajeh gave an example above. :)

      • I thought racing stripes made it faster?

  • Question for the RAM experts out there. I'm after some RAM for a Dell Inspiron G5 5090 (from a recent deal here). It takes 4x DDR4 2666 on a H370 MB. I have read in the Dell forums that people using faster than 2666 has been running at 2133. I'm not an overclocker, mainly want extra for VMWare, but would like to buy the right stuff to keep it at 2666 if possible. Would this fit the bill? What should I look for?

Also it has 2x8GB installed. 48GB would be enough for me, 32GB a bit light. Dells site says the MB supports 8,16,32 and 64GB. Is this right? Do I need 4x16GB, or can I just add 2x16GB to go to 48GB? Thanks…

    • It is best to match the sizes of all DIMMs, but I believe it should work. You will have to manually configure it for 2666MHz within BIOS, if Dell even includes an option to do so otherwise it will default to 2133MHz.

      • Ram expert, my 4 or 5 year old i7 aldi computer has DDR4 2132 memory. Would you have any idea if It could run memory faster than that? It still have original bios. there was never an update. You told the other guy he could manually configure it to 2666, is there a reason why he could not do 3200?

        • +1

If using mismatched RAM, you want to match all RAM to the slowest stick(s), hence 2666 instead of 3200.

Additionally, OEM builds often have a barebones BIOS (which might not offer overclocking options though they usually will), and may have a basic motherboard that isn't particularly good at RAM overclocking.

          • @12Ghast: Thankyou. I shall check if my bios looks to have a 3200 option.

          • @12Ghast: You were correct about my aldi oem motherboard (msi) being simplified. there are no ram settings at all. Is it possible that this 2016 board would have xmp and turned on by default so that the 3200 ram will run at correct speed?
            thankyou

        • +1

H370 does not support overclocking, and hard caps at 2666MHz.

          • @Void: Thanks all, went for 64GB. Fingers crossed, hopefully OK as the timings on this are exactly that same as the installed RAM i.e. 16-18-18-38. Now I wonder how many Chrome tabs I can have open;-)

            • @mostlygordon: I'd say about 2 tabs is realistic. 3 if you're lucky.

  • Bought this yesterday from another ebay seller using the coupon code for $223.20. I think I read an OzB comment yesterday that said price protection won't cover another seller on eBay - is that correct?

  • Will this RAM work well with a Asus ROG Strix B450-I and a 3900x?

What about a B450M Mortar Max or B450 Mortar Tomahawk?

    • Don't see why not, I'm running the 3900x on the ASRock x570 Steel legend with this ram, default xmp motherboard settings @3200mhz, no problems.

      Look up your specific motherboard.

    • For some reason they are not showing B450 in the QVL, but can't see why it wouldn't work.

  • how do these compare to the g.skill flare x?

    • Same thing but bigger. Both are Samsung C-die with the exact same timings, if the FlareX works I don't know what would stop this from working.

  • If you are getting ram for Ryzen just make sure it is on your motherboard QVL and you want as fast as possible (3600-3800) seems to be sweet spot. Unfortunately, b die at that speed is in excess of $450 to $500.

This is why I opted for 32gb of the crucial ballistics 16-18-18 that was posted the other day. Micron e die almost matches b die and is still in production.

  • Ooo if I waited I could have got two of these for 64gb. But maybe if I wait a bit I can upgrade to 128gb. After Effects loves ram when rendering.
