OzBargain EoFY 2020 Treasure Hunt - $7,000 of Prizes to be Won! Starting 22 June at 12PM

Our annual Easter Treasure Hunt took a break this year, but we are now back with one that has bigger and fancier prizes for the End of Financial Year this year! Similar to previous years' format (2019, 2018, 2017, etc) so those who have participated in past hunts would need no instruction.

Instructions

However if you are new to the OzBargain Treasure Hunt, here are some instructions. Basically various prizes will pop up on the site throughout the day during the hunt. They might appear on the (1) OzBargain Home Page, (2) New Deals Page and (3) any deals / forums page with 10 or more comments. Often you'll need to do a bit of scrolling as they usually pop up in the middle of deal listing or between comments. Here's an example:

Click to Reveal the Prize

There are quite a few factors that determine whether a prize pops up on the current page or not.

  • Each prize has a probability (i.e. 1% of chance that a gift card will drop)
  • Each prize also has a starting time (i.e. only live from 4PM on Monday)
  • Some prizes only appear on certain pages — more on that later.

Also note that if a prize pops up on a page, it won't stay there forever! It would disappear after 15 seconds without interaction. However after you click on the prize, it would reveal what the prize is and allow you to claim it.

Click to Claim the Prize

After you have claimed the prize, it would be added to your inventory, which is available on the Marketplace page. Marketplace would be very important in the later part of the game. You can add up to 4 items to your inventory — prizes basically would stop popping up on OzBargain once your inventory is full.

Marketplace

On the Marketplace page, you can

  • See what prizes you have in your inventory.
  • Drop prizes to vacate your inventory. Dropped prize will be back to the wild, ready to be picked up by other OzBargainers.
  • Put your prizes on the marketplace for trading.
  • See what prizes other users have put on the marketplace.
  • Request / Accept / Reject trades.

Trading is important because many prizes come in multiple parts — and you can only claim the final prize when you have collected all the parts!

Multipart Prize

Feel free to use private messages or this forum to organise trades, and claim as many prizes from me as you can :)

Prizes

Here is a list of prizes for EoFY Treasure Hunt 2020. Half of them are in the form of Prezzee Gift Cards where you can exchange it with merchants' gift cards to be spent online or instore. The higher valued prizes are the kind of splurge at the end of financial years — popular headphones/earbuds on OzBargain, and desktop computer from a popular store and a laptop from a popular brand.

  • 50x Prezzee eGift Card $25
  • 20x Prezzee eGift Card $50
  • 10x Prezzee eGift Card $100 (2 parts)
  • Apple AirPods 2 (2 parts)
  • Apple AirPods Pro (2 parts)
  • Bose QuietComfort 35 Mk II (2 parts)
  • Bose NCH-700 (3 parts)
  • Sony WF-1000XM3 (2 parts)
  • Sony WH-1000XM3 (2 parts)
  • Gaming PC at ~$1,000, likely from TechFast (3 parts)
  • Lenovo ThinkPad E-series at ~$1,000 (3 parts)

For those looking at collecting multipart prizes, here are some tips:

  • It's always the part 2 that's the rare one. There will actually be more part 1 / part 3 than part 2 that will pop up on the site.
  • 5 of the Prezzee eGift Card $100 part 2 will be released in random locations. However all the other part 2 will only appear on specific pages, and the hints will be released here during the hunt.

For example, I might be posting a comment in this post:

Prezzee eGift Card $100 (2/2) — what was the most voted deal in this financial year?

Answer would be Free GTA V from Epic Games, where there's a high probability that specific prize will appear.

Comments

      • what happens if they don't trade and no one can claim the airpods

        • People need to work on negotiation…

          Also as in the post:

There will actually be more part 1 / part 3 than part 2 that will pop up on the site.

So someone else might grabbed another AirPods Pro Part 1 and will be willing to trade.

          • @scotty: Can you help me?

May I know what does it mean??

            Congratulations! You found…
            Sony WH-1000XM3 (1/2)
ERROR: This item has already been claimed

If you congratulate me then what is that error means?

If it was claimed before then how did I found it and you congratulated me because of that? :/

        • Yeah what if both sides are stingy as 😩 what happens to unclaimable prizes?

  • -6

    scam i didn't win anything

    • Competition you paid nothing for is a scam. Yes.

  • Should I keep looking? Or is it all finished now? :D

  • +16

I still don't know if i'm "hunting" right

    • Am I supposed to just go to random deals and look for the icon? Haven't seen anything at all.

      • Only 5 released at a time, it's low probability in the first place.

    • +1

what I understand from picking up random bits here and there:

      • only bother looking if there's "Active" prizes on the market page
      • it can appear on the ozbargain front page (but not the subsequent pages I think so dont bother looking)
      • on the ozbargain Deals page (but again only first page)
      • in comments on random deals above 10 (but on subsequent comment pages? I dont know)
      • No idea if its a waste of time refreshing the front and deal first pages

Also even if you find one someone else could have claimed it before you.

      • +2

Yeah - a combo of what you have written has been my [unsuccessful] method so far

  • +5

I'm getting that click frenzy feeling 😔

    • Luckily I stopped participating in crap frenzy.
But im getting that Monopoly feels 😞

  • +1

It's not working if you are using PC to visit Ozbargain, am I right? :/

    • Why wouldn't it?

      • +1

Because i haven't seen any single one here, so I assumed maybe something is wrong! hahahah

    • +1

      instruction screenshots are from PC

  • (3) any deals / forums page with 10 or more comments

Come on! This is vague. Forums section is huge..:)

    • +4

That's why you have to hunt for it!

    • Forums section is huge..:)

      So is the deals section?

  • -1

May I know what does it mean??

    Congratulations! You found…
    Sony WH-1000XM3 (1/2)
ERROR: This item has already been claimed

If you congratulate me then what is that error means?

If it was claimed before then how did I found it and you congratulated me because of that? :/

Guys anyone knows what's happening? :///

    • The same item simultaneously pops up on someone else's browser, and then you clicked on the "Claim" button a bit too late.

        • You asked

          Guys anyone knows what's happening

and I gave the explanation, as someone who actually coded the treasure hunt module for OzBargain. You are competing with hundreds of OzBargainers simultaneously who are also looking for gift cards, and if you waited, someone else is going to claim it.

          • -5

@scotty: All I am asking is that please let me know if I found it and the system says congratulation to me, how is that possilbe someone else claimed it!

            • +2

@shahrah: You have to click "Claim". The congratulations is just for finding it I think.

Look at this picture from the OP

              https://files.delvu.com/thunt/0-click-to-claim-2020.png

            • @shahrah: You went out for a walk. You found a 50 dollar note on the ground. Congratulations! While you were pondering what you should do about it, someone else came and picked it up. That's what happened.

                • +2

                  @shahrah: You dense cabbage.

One person can claim the prize only. To claim it you have to press 'Claim'. However, the method of distributing prizes isn't by private message or any individual means - it's posted in a location that many other people can see it too. Therefore, if someone beats you to click the 'Claim' button, you're not the 'one person' who successfully claimed it.

It will happen to literally every other item because having it seen by multiple people, possibly at the same time, is by design.

The site will congratulate you because many, many people won't even see the thing let alone click 'Claim'.

                  • -7

@yoogz: If even you are right, they should design prizes in a way that if someone claimed it, it disappears from system not be visible!

                    • +1

@shahrah: If you don’t like it; don’t participate.

                      • -2

@WoodYouLikeSomeCash: Not up to you to decide! if something is wrong you need to open your mouth and say it, not ignore it!

                        • +1

@shahrah: It's only game! Why you heff to be mad?

                          • -2

                            @j4ck: I am not mad! (^_^)

Something happened I just report it and ask someone to explain to me, I received an excuse instead of explaining!
So others also tried to explain and I said if the things they are saying is right then system show not work like that!
So you can see I just asked a question and give my feedback!
It's up to them to accept it or not!

In the end, I am always happy :)

                        • @shahrah: There is nothing wrong with this game, it works as intended. Just because you lost doesn’t mean you have to start making this false claims.

                    • +9

@shahrah: If you're actually interested, allow me to explain why the system is designed this way. This is simply a limitation of the way computers and static web pages work.

Ozbargain is a bunch of static web pages. Once the page gets loaded onto your screen, it's fixed. Ozbargain can't change what's displayed to you until you click something else.

At the point you loaded the page, the prize was not claimed - hence the server continued to advertise the prize. A short while later, else clicks 'Claim' and now the Ozbargain server stops advertising the prize and makes note that someone has claimed it. However, you still see the prize on your screen because you haven't updated your page. When you go to click 'Claim', Ozbargain does its internal check, realises someone else has already claimed the prize, and throws an error. It can't tell you any more dynamically than it already does, because Ozbargain pages are static.

In short of rebuilding Ozbargain from the ground up, I do believe that's the best the developers could do… In fact, telling you the reason for the failure (ERROR: This item has already been claimed) is already a much more gracious failure than what they needed to give.

If you are actually interested in why this is a thing, google "critical section problem". This is just a fact of the way computers/servers schedule tasks.

                      • -2

@yoogz: Now, this is something! Thanks for the information. Is there any way that can avoid this type of scenario or it is already in the best possible condition it should be?

Is gambling website working the same way or they have a more advanced system?

        • -7

Obviously, this is a system error and if the moderator wants to just explain it in another way that someone else got it means nothing to me.

      • +2

I feel like the whole gripe seems to be the wording (I personally have no issues with it, but alas).

        Maybe something like:
        "Hey, wow! You found…"
        Then if unsuccessful:
"Oh no, you were too slow this time!"

        (or something along those lines)

  • Is there a way to see where the ones that were found were actually found?

I can't figure out if I'm doing this right.

    • Yes scotty should be revealing.at least for the Hinted ones

  • +4

I know it's random but do the prizes choose their location and stay in that same thread until found? Or if I keep refreshing the same thread, is there a chance it'll pop up on that thread for one of my refreshes?

    • It's random (for most prizes) so yes if you keep refreshing the same thread it might appear. However you might also want to check the marketplace page to see whether there's any "Active" treasures (currently, 0). There's no point refreshing when the pool is empty. The next one coming up in 16 minutes.

      • +2

Thanks scotty. Saves me going to lots of different threads searching for it when I've got the same chances searching in one random thread and refreshing.

      • +1

        "It's random (for most prizes)"

so most prizes will appear on any of the pages listed (home page, new deals, random forum with 10+ posts). you can keep refreshing a single page or jump between pages but the odds will be the same for it appearing, based on back end calculations….

        reading between the lines:
so does that mean some prizes will only appear in …lets say a random forum page.
or (im assuming) the prizes with hints will be in a specific forum page related to the clue ? - these wont move and will be there untill claimed ? (or will still disappear after 15sec?)

is there an age limit on forum posts prozes will appear - eg posts from a year ago ?

        • you can keep refreshing a single page

Yes, but that gets boring :) It should just pop up when you are browsing through different deals / forum posts on OzBargain.

is there an age limit on forum posts

Not for this year's — it can be any old forum post. A few specific prizes are actually on some old forum posts with historical significance.

        • Yeah I tried the refresh single page trick on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546698. Did it from when there were 5 active - for maybe about 5-10 mins - didn't pop up once. So I guess luck of the draw.

  • +2

So just confirming, they will not appear while scrolling the Competitions section of OzBargain?

    • No, not the competition listing pages.

      • No worries. Thanks for the response.

    • +4

      Apologies to gnv💧

  • +1

I'm trying to enter https://www.ozbargain.com.au/marketplace but it keeps saying 403 Access Denied

    • I have updated the original post to add this to the eligibility:

Account created before this post — I am blocking new accounts from accessing the treasure hunt to stop people creating multiple accounts to game the system.

However I am updating the system to include your account in — so yes your account would be the newest account to be eligible for participating in the treasure hunt.

      • could i also get my new account eligible to participate please?
I have been active on ozbargin w/o an accuont for some time and i saw today that you needed an account to participate so i made one but couldnt access the marketplace

    • U cant participate on a new acc

  • +3

Does scrolling new deals work or is it just the first page of new deals?

    • Just the first page. Prize popup is triggered on page load.

  • +3

Thanks for putting this together Scotty! Any Ozbargain shirts this time around?

    • Due to COVID-19 (and my own laziness) this year's batch of shirts hasn't been made yet. We'll get there, hopefully, by the end of the year.

      • Great to hear!

  • Anyone else wondering the Specs of Techfast PC?

    • I was just going to go to TechFast deals and find one that's closest to $1k (not including delivery). Ryzen 3 3100 + RTX 2060 for $999? I'll pay for it this week but probably won't see delivery until late July/August.

      • I needd this so bad but hadn't found any myself.😞
Guess you know what I'm going for now aye boss! 😉 Laptop'll do, let's see if trades change

  • +1

Refreshed too quickly and missed one… Did about 300 refreshes I think

  • Haven't seen anything — on deals page 1 or discussion forum top 5 threads…

EDIT: Will they be visible using Brave Browser ?

    • +2

Yep, using Brave with AdBlock and it still works.

  • Hey scotty, I think the numbers in the brackets are around the wrong way! Just found this one:

    • Bose NCH-700 (3/2)
    • Should be 3/3 I believe as there's three parts and you found the third part based on what you've put up in the Marketplace

      • Yep, that makes sense. Just a bit weird it's showing as (3/2).

    • Fixed now.

      • There’s a mistake on part 1 of Bose NCH-700. It says 1/2 when I believe it should be 1/3.

  • +1

N00b question — when we see people trading stuff in Marketplace, are they offering their piece or indicating they want to buy the 2nd / 3rd pieces ?

    • It's 1 for 1 trade. You need to present one prize from your own inventory to trade with someone else's prize in the marketplace.

  • Bet you I am black listed

  • +1

what if let's say, person 1 gets part 1 of a prize, and person 2 gets part 2 of a prize,
person 1 and 2 are both looking for the other half.

they both have only 1 prize and they both don't want to trade each other,
and its come to the end of the treasure hunt, and they both haven't gotten their other half

what happens to the prize? does it just get silently removed?

    • +1

there are many part 1's but rare part 2's (like the mcdonalds monopoly game). A part 2 guy could easily find a part 1 from someone else

      • ooo I see, thanks

  • +1

this is harder than ebay plus deals! I've scored airpods on ebay but not finding anything here haha!

    edit; airpods on ebay

    • +1

Yeah i really wanna go Maccas but i'm scared of not finding a prize. Starve or Treasure hunt ?

  • if we're super lucky and score 4x $25 Prezzee gift cards, do we get all or them? or limited to 1 prize per person?
sorry if this has been answered before

    • Yes you do. I'll send you 4x $24 egift cards.

      • wait, but what about the remaining $4 ?
        is there a $1 transaction fee ?
