With cashrewards 5% it makes the price a little closer to the lightning deal - if this device is under the "Electronics" category, any idea?

    • +1

Good point! Yes it does fall under Electronics. Have updated the post :)

    • For those doing calculations, Cashrewards appear to be doing 5% of non GST portion.
So approx A$129 after rebate (if Cashrewards actually pays).

Interesting thing on the Amazon website - go to the final page of "What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?", and it lists "Dove Men+Care Antiperspirant Deodorant" :-)

    • Alexa algorithm at its best XD

    • That's Amazon AU for you… I sell on there, it's a ghost town. I also sell on Amazon US and have literally 100x more sales.

RPi are great for the home, a few things I have used them for
    pi-hole network-wide ad blocking
    PiVPN for remote access
Kodi + usb Tuner and TVHeadend to watch FTA TV from anywhere in the house (or from anywhere via the VPN)

not really there as a mini PC for me.
And for that money for 4GB/32GB personal computing, my benchmark is the HP14 chromebook on Ozbargain late last year which ended up at $139

Personally, as far as usable mini-pc are concerned, I will hold out for an Asus PN50 (cost a fair bit more though).

    • +1

What USB tuner are you using?

      • +1

An Avermedia AverTV Volar Green HD that was laying about.
Running it on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B v1.2 from another Ozbargain deal…

        • Thanks.

    • I am thinking to use RPi to learn some web/server hosting. Would it be powerful enough for some basic website? Probably not going to have a lot of traffic or complex features

      • This is more than enough, yes.

        • Do you have any other cheaper alternative that good enough to do some hosting? Like Raspberry Pi Zero W is much cheaper, but be good enough?

          • @Bulaxy: if you are just going to make a simple basic webserver, handling a few requests per minute, any pi can do that.

In fact, Pi4 is not suitable to be a webserver, especially in summer. It's getting really hot and hangs. I have to use fanned heatsink to cool it down to be able to run 24/7.

            • @ausdday: Thank you for the notes. I will get something else then!

              • @Bulaxy: The Pi4 should be fine.

Here's a youtube video comparing passive heatsinks.
A passive heatsink should be sufficient for applications that are not running at 100% CPU for extended periods.

This model is overkill for a simple website. I think the 2GB model or a cheap Pi3 would be better value.

                • @trongy: Thanks for the tips! I will take that into consideration

            • +1

@ausdday: If yours is hanging doing webserver duties you've got other problems. Make sure you've got the firmware updated on it as the early ones did have some thermal issues.

I've got 2 of these running 24x7 in the same enclosure and never had an issue. Don't even have passive heatsinks on them.

              • @noisymime: Did you run your pi in about 30C ambient temperature?

                • @ausdday: They're in a rack in the garage. It's been well over 35C in there at times without any issues.

                  • @noisymime: Hmm, i have 2 and both have same issue, with passive heatsinks. I have to run heatsink and fan to make it run 24/7. I didn’t have any issue when I was running Pi3, even without any heatsink.

That’s why i said if you just want a simple webserver, Pi3 will be sufficient, cheaper in cost and lower power consumption.

                    • @ausdday: Have you done the firmware update on them? It definitely helps.

Agree completely though that a Pi3 is more than enough for a light duty webserver.

                      • @noisymime: Thanks for the tips. I will try to update the firmware. Cheers

      • +1

If you just want to learn you better of with Virtualbox. Adding vagrant / ansible on top of that to have 'DevOps' flair.

    • i have a usb tuner but trying to justify why do I even bother using TVheadend and watch FTA from anywhere in the house.
do people still watch FTA these days where most of the programmes are already in their streaming app? like ABC has the iview and so on.

i tried TVheadend ages ago and they are great DVR software.

      • Still works. PVR is good and use antennas to mate with plex

      • What motivated me initially was having a TV upstairs with antenna connection downstairs.
I kind of snowballed after that.

    • do you need multiple Ethernet ports for pi-hole?

      • +1

No, all traffic can flow through one interface.
Your pc -> DNS lookup to pihole
        Pihole -> Internet DNS/NS
Pihole -> response back to your device

      • +2

Setup Pi-hole and remember its IP address.

From you computer/ipad/phones, set the DNS server IP to your pi-hole address. It will handle the rest.

  • +2

thanks I bought one before I saw it on Ozb!
normally happens the other way around

  • Keen to get one to use for some home automation, or a RetroPi. That price is tempting!

    • What home automaion is justifiable as a budget solutionv to use pi?

  • Thanks got one after waiting for long

  • +4

I love the Ozbargain cycle of deals, it all comes in waves, was AMD processors for a few weeks, then SSD's, now Pi's lol

    What's next on the cartwheel?

        So 2016!

There's a raspberry pi laptop on kickstarter CrowPi2 - Raspberry Pi Laptop & STEM Education Platform, via @Kickstarter. Looks cool.

  • +5

i think there’s is a shortage of cheap 4gb and2gb deals for just PIs , and we also have 8 GB PI now, not sure if the extra stuff really does it for me or i’d rather just cheap PIs and buy extras as needed.

    • +3

Second that.. it seems like "Filler" not sure how much of a bargain it is when you add that on top of the actual Pi price

  • +1

Expect the fan in this kit do die a fast and noisy death.

  • You'll need aluminium cases for Pi 4 (Argon ONE, FLIRC, etc.)

Just got 2 Pi 4 8GB models (had to be 2 orders due to limitation) from Core Electornics, no discounts (130), simply want more RAM with the Argon NEo + ONE cases.

4GB is fine but won't be able to run full fledged Desktop Environment like Manjaro ARM (KDE Plasma), xfce4 / lxqt may work well (Pi OS uses lxde?).

    • +1

4GB should be fine for KDE Plasma. It's not that hungry.

And yes, aluminium cases are great and are a good idea, but honestly if your workload is "bursty" (and it probably is) you can get away with a case that has no real cooling.

Why would anyone buy this as a desktop when you can just buy a second hand sff for the same money?

      • +1

I was wondering the same thing.

Whole different story for a RasPi zero W for 20 bucks, but this simply hasn't got the value for money - let alone upgradeability - of a refurb Optiplex or similar.

        • I just upgraded an Optiplex with an i5-2400 for $24 off eBay, amazing value

      • +1

Why would anyone buy this as a desktop when you can just buy a second hand sff for the same money?

Running cost. If you leave it running 24/7, so you can web browse at a moment's notice or remotely access your files, you'll be surprised how much the electricity is going to cost you.

Using QLD electricity costs of 26c/kWh (more expensive in other states)

        Typical SFF computer @100W = 0.1kw x 24 x365 x 0.26 = $227.76/year

        RPi plus HDD @15W = 0.015kW x 24 x 365 = $34.164/year

More than $190 difference, every year.

        • +1

I understand, but you'll have an even better device for that. You have phones that can do exactly those stuff, but much faster, in a better form factor for immediate browsing. If you have a search that needs a keyboard, waiting 10 seconds for your computer to turn on isn't that long of a wait.

For a server though, yeah, it's good.

          • +1

@Wonderfool: I wish I could get my phone to work like that. I keep finding poorly-coded websites that give me a crippled "mobile" webpage, irrespective of whether "request desktop website" is ticked or not.

For example, brisbane.freegalmusic.com has a header and footer that take up about 50% of the screen in portrait mode, and more than 90% of the screen in landscape mode. It's much better on an actual desktop.

            • +1

@Russ: Huh,I rarely have that problem. Even in the site you link, it seemed to be fine to me. I use samsung browser though, so I dunno if their version of desktop request is better or what. I also have a mi max, though it doesn't matter since it's 1080p.

Edit: actually, playing around with it some more, yeah, the site is shit on mobile.

  • +2

Element14 is also selling just the board for $92.40 incGST if you have the other bits lying from previous projects.

    • +1

Under $90 from RS Components, if you use the 3.5% cashback from CashRewards.

      https://au.rs-online.com/mobile/p/processor-microcontroller-…

    • This is the approach I would like to do with one of these, rather than have everything on a plate by buying a kit, i.e. if possible, I always prefer to make do and still make something work with what is already on hand.
However, I remember this model was sensitive to power supplies, hence the 3A 5V official supply.
Anyhow I have a few QC 3 and PD power supplies thanks to previous ozbargain deals.
Has anyone had success using a PD USB C power supply with the Raspberry Pi 4 (PD >15W should be able to supply 5V 3A)?

  • +2

What game systems can you reasonably expect to emulate with this?

    • +1

Up till psp and ds. It won't be able to do Dolphin or dreamcast.

      • So a snes or ps1 classic can do the same thing

        • If you have a flagship Samsung or a lg in the last few years, your phone will be 10 times better.

          But yes.

  • Thanks OP, purchased. Looking forward to playing around with one of these for a while now.

    • I've been wanting one for years, chose to jump on this one finally, $129 after cashrewards

  • Any deals on the new 8 gig model?

  • thanks OP. Finally bought one ..

  • Good deal! Thanks OP.

  • Tempted to get one of these to set up for retro-pie. What else do i need to buy? just controllers?

    • +2

      A CRT.

      • +1

        Those were the days…

    • You can buy usb controllers from ebay or try pairing xbox or ps controller

  • any deals on the 8GB version?

  • Thanks op. Bought one to play with.

  • Does this have wifi?

    • +1

Yes. Both 2.4ghz and 5ghz band

  • anyone knows where can I buy pi zero that in stock? (solely for pi-hole only) thanks
