Def not $911, others selling for $599 according to staticice.

    • +3

That's to be expected coming from SE

      • +4

It's not to be expected in an ozb post though. Title and post should be amended (remove "was $911", maybe add "save $50").

  • I am interested in mini pc to setup Media center. I was looking at this one

    https://www.geekbuying.com/item/Beelink-U57-i5-5257U-8GB-256…

I know CPU is a bit weak but it comes with Win10 and ram and ssd. There are quite a few inputs and outputs. Price is around 450 aud.

So what's your opinion on this one?

    • I chose Raspberry pi 4

    • HDMI Version: 1.4
      HDMI Function: HDCP

Doesn't support 4K streaming of Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, etc.

      • Which version supports 4K streaming?

        • +1

Intel 7th gen Core at minimum. Supports HDCP 2.2 for streaming 4K protected content, but your refresh rate will be limited to 30Hz as it's still only HDMI 1.4

8th gen supports HDMI 2.0 for 60Hz refresh rate.

    • If you're paying $450 for a imported China 5th gen or local 10th gen for $100 more then your choice is clear unless you're really skint.

If you want to resell it do you think a 5th or 10th gen is more attractive.

      • +1

        It's not $100 more…

      • +2

        $100 plus Windows 10, plus a 240GB SSD, plus 8GB of DDR3L.

    • I can't find the reference any more, but I'm pretty sure you need a minimum 7th gen Intel CPU to get UHD from streaming services (even with a discrete GPU). So be aware you'll be limited to 1080p at best.

      • Edit: deleted, didn't see the comment you were replying to sorry!

    • The SE Nuc doesn't come with ram/SSD/OS
Add the cost of those, it will be over $700 easy

Get something like this AU $274.99 posted

These arent as quiet as they say it is.

How would this compare to a Ryzen 7 4500u Asus barebone?

    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-mini-pc-pn50-barebone-…

  • why do people call this a media player when they can pretty much handle any thing other than hard core gaming?

    • media playing != gaming

      • media gaming != playing

  • +2

Pretty hard to justify this against the refurbished NUCs or Lenovo Tiny SFF PCs that usually come with RAM and an SSD for around $200 (sometimes W10 Pro as well), unless you desperately need the extra processing power.

    • -1

Well…… other than it being brand new kit that'll probably last longer than 3 year old refurbs?

      • -3

Will absolutely not last as long as a real PC

        • +2

I bought a DN2820 Celeron NUC in 2014, it's basically been running 24/7 as a media player and it's still going strong

      • Not going to last 3 times as long to justify the price, and really computers these days are so reliable it's practically a non-issue.

  • NUC8 is better because Iris vs UHD in NUC10 (Both are slow anyway but still .. )
Just a reminder about the fan noise is extreme in both i5 and i7.
Pump it up to 64GB RAM and it can last for years.

    • +2

Longevity has nothing to do with how much Ram you have. 16GB is still plenty for most people!

      • It does if the longevity he is referring too is useful performance as opposed to reliability.

  • +2

People looking for a pure media player would be better off with something like a Shield, they're brilliant little low power general use boxes though. I've got an older i3 version running a few VMs quite nicely

  • I've been eyeing one of these as a home assistant server and maybe Plex for transcoding (won't need to worry about HDMI output as it'll be streaming). I'm wondering if a NUC is over-kill for my purposes?
