Integrated 57Wh

Cheapest Ryzen 7 4800U I've seen. Do be mindful of smaller 57Wh battery and inferior screen. Great build quality and should be great for power users. Not sure whether the wifi card on this is an Intel though. Contains an additional m.2 slot and a 2.5" drive bay. The drive bay is unfortunately blocked if bought with a 70Wh battery. Also, extremely long waiting times are to be expected.

*Update on Shipping - My OVP originally said that the laptop will arrive 16 September, but has since been changed to 14 August. This should give some hope of faster shipping times.

  • The drive bay is unfortunately blocked if bought with a 70Wh battery.

Lenovo Aus tends not to have the bigger battery options which is annoying

  • Good for gaming??

    • +1

No you'll want one with a beefier dedicated GPU for that.

    • +2

This is fine for light gaming (CSGO and GTA V low settings) but don't expect anything amazing.

      • +1

Yeah it's a good portable secondary device if you have a PC at home.

check this one out before buy!

  • how does this differ from the 4500u

300 its brightness thats way too dim

    • +1

300 is good. 220 is dim

      • I'd worry for his eyes

        • XD made my day

        • no, you don't want to go full brightness a day long cause your screen max brightness makes the screen just visible, your laptop will run out of battery very quickly

    • 4500u is 6 cores 6 threads. It also has a lower boost clock (4.0 vs 4.2) and inferior igpu (vega 6)

    • Around 200 is typical for a monitor, 300 is about what you'd want in a laptop.

Don't compare it to phone brightness - phones are often used in direct sunlight and need the 400+ at times. You won't typically use your laptop in direct sunlight.

  • Why would anyone buy a lappy with soldered RAM? Apart from the lack of upgradeability, usually is just one stick (single channel much slower than dual channel), difficult if not impossible to replace malfunctioning RAM etc.

    • This is 16gb ram soldered configured in dual channel. Have to agree that I would take sodimm any day of the week.

It's like Intel said to all the OEMs ur allowed to build AMD solutions but make sure u screw up one thing that's not linkable to us… i.e sht screen… sht battery… Sub par build quality or cooling… Then nvidia chimed in and said anything above 2060 is intel only….

    Takes off tin-foil hat

    • Yes all AMD laptops seem to destined to have shit screen

      • Well go no further from lenovo T14 ryzen 5/7 pro 4650/4750

With 400 nits brightness option has 72% NTSC

ans X13 with 72% NTSC screen,

Not the best screen but, is ok haha

        • Well there's this but like Linus says… They are doing a disservice by not utilising AMD at the spectre level… LTT

    • Yes, there has been rumour that big bully Intel is blackmailing all the laptop manufacturers not to give AMD models equally good spec.

    • When do you think Intel is going to catch up?
Do you think AMD will just stand still?

      • The iGPU in the upcoming 11th gen is meant to be really good; raja works his magic again!

The big one really is when Intel will get its 7nm out the door. Next year I would hope? Nothing concrete yet I don't think.

    • that very well may be
but that day hasn't come yet

    • +1

"Once Intel catches up" (as in w the 10nm) - that was to be 2016, than 2017, than 2018.. you got the idea… :D

      • why so many negs, but once intel does catch up to 7nm, AMD is screwed unless AMD can develop 5nm processors faster than samsung or TSMC in producing their 5nm

  • Do the product naming divisions in marketing at Intel, AMD and NVidia get their bonuses based on how confusing the product name is?

    • Yes… Imagine they let engineers name it it'd be called just a model number.. Dear lord! …

There'd be no utilisation of the letters X or K or XT, which everyone knows by now should automatically cost more if you use them… and words like Super or TITANIUM and Gaming OC would go to total waste… How would we even know what's gooder than good without them!

…. P. S please see Simpson's comic book guy to get the feel for the level of sarcasm šŸ˜

      • Vega 8 Renoir is a totally different chip on smaller die process than Vega 8. Gotta love it. I'd rather the engineers with their model numbers.

        • we'd have a lot of marketers out of jobs then… lol

          • @scud70: Sounds like a win to me.

            • @syousef: oooh come on then we wouldn't have names like …

Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 ArcticStorm Thermaltake 10 Year Anniversary Edition
MSI GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING Z TRIO (yes it has to be in capitals like your shouting it… that's how awesome it is)
Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti XTREME WATERFORCE WB 11G

just to name a few… lolll

              • @scud70: Brand - Zotac/MSI/Gigabyte - ok useful
NVidia GEFORCE branding - acceptable if not useful.- I don't think the kind of company making a fake is gonna give a damn about using the name.
Brand Card name AORUS - hmm okay you're just marking your territory Gigabyte. Careful not to get any pee on me.
                GTX/RTX - ok useful
Card type - 1080/2070 Super/2080 Ti - useful but convoluted. Minor modifiers are a totally different card e.g. Ti vs Super. Annoying.
Card marketing name - ArcticStorm Thermaltake 10 Year Anniversary Edition, GAMING Z TRIO, WATERFORCE WB 11G - My eyes! My eyes!!!! I guess waterforce and trio are useful/descriptive designations and 11G - well okay if there are different variants of memory for that card type.

  • M.2 2242

Thats going to make upgrading a pain.

    • From the videos I've seen the m.2 2242 is connected to a metal bracket which is screwed onto the hole for an m.2 2280. So upgrading shouldn't be a worry.

      • My Dell Inspiron 14 5480 had an M.2 2242 2230 drive, it just has like some weird switcheroo thingy that can add a hole for M.2 2280. Probably same here.

    Now…. About that edu account

  • Is it correct that Ideapad built quality is far below T series?

    • Yes

  • Slim 5 or the E14 Gen 2? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549085 (about $70 difference)

    • E14 - better build, bigger screen :-)

  • Is this worth the extra ~$250 more just based on the model/Ryzen version compared to this one?

They've said the exact same thing on another recent Lenovo deal.

  • ā€œInvalid configurationā€
    Canā€™t checkout

    • I've asked on the online chat and this laptop can not be currently ordered due to parts availabililty

Update on Shipping - My OVP originally said that the laptop will arrive 16 September, but has since been changed to 14 August. This should give some hope of faster shipping times.

    • For reference I ordered an IdeaPad 5 14", ordered on June 19, was shipped on July 9, and was delivered to my house on July 16. So less than a month seems like a pretty good timeframe considering the made to order aspect of these machines
