Go with a projector + 150" screen… I can stress enough how big screen gaming is a game changer.

Need to talk to wife about getting a joystick

Wives typically lose interest in playing with joysticks after the first few years of marriage.

  • Dang, might try flying those boing 777 in the west Atlantic ocean, can't say it will fly for long, if there's multiplayer I'll let you fly it, while I sit in seat 37E economy, I heard Microsoft serves the best food.

  • I wonder if these versions will ever go on special in the coming months/years as in Xmas time and whatever?

Who knows, I would have loved this on steam as well along with FSX:SE and Xplane11.

  • Hi, what is "Xbox Game Pass for PC"? Does it mean I can play it on both PC and Xbox? Can any gurus please explain?

    • Subscription service. There are two tiers, Game Pass for PC and Game Pass Ultimate. Game Pass for PC will give you access to a range of games you can play on PC whereas Ultimate is Game pass for PC and Xbox (and Xbox Live Gold). You need Windows 10 with the latest updates to use Game Pass for PC too.

  • Time to invest in a new pc and yoke/throttle system… I remember doing the same when FSX came out, worth it!

As someone who has been flying PC flight simulators for 20 years I am very much looking forward to this. Currently have P3Dv4 never decided to upgrade to V5 as I knew Flight Simulator 2020 was to be released this year. I remember the botched release of MS Flight in 2012 so the announcement of this was a very big surprise. I am glad this is an all new product which has been in development for over 5 years, not some 2006 code and "upgraded".

    Any joystick bargains?

  • +1

Quite excited for this, but it'll be the first time flight simming for me. Are there training / tutorials within the game itself or any other resources that are worth a look before playing?

    • Tutorials are in-game

    • If the ingame tutorials for 2020 aren't enough you can pick up the older Microsoft Flight Simulator X on Steam when it's on special. It's $36 at the moment. There are piloting tutorials in that - you can even earn virtual pilot's licenses. Though the check rides are a bit demanding in that you'll need to be able to stick to speeds and altitudes. Still with or without the tutorials it'll teach you some of the basics. And there's a heap of free addon content for the older sim - you don't need to buy any of the paid addons unless there's something specific you want.

  • I don't have an XBOX Pass, but I really want to play this on my PC. How much does the XBOX pass cost and how does it work?

    • -3
    • I had the same question too, but I went to google and all the info is on the xbox pass webpage.

      • I'm wondering specifically how the pass works in relation to this deal. Can you get the sub for 1 month then cancel or do I need to keep it?

        • The games are only active while the game pass is active.

A monthly fee will potentially work out cheaper than buying the game you wish to play, unless you intend on playing it forever. Plus you get access to other games.

Eg. My brother played Outer Worlds and only played it for a few months at the game pass subscription fee which was cheaper than buying it outright. He's not playing it now.

  • Hey I'm new to Game Pass. Do we need to have an active subscription in order to play FS2020 or once we redeem it, it stays in our account. (I find it hard to believe that you can just get game pass for $1 and then cancel the subscription but still keep the $99 game.

    • +1

You'll need an active sub. As soon as it expires so does access to any gamepass game.

  • +6

Dang, I should have gone for the discounted frozen airline meals deal to go with this. Turn on a vacuum cleaner for the noise of jet engines, play the sound of shouting kids, and it would have been just like an overseas holiday.

    • +2

Don't forget the $0.99 Airbus A320 Study Guide

      • Good deal but seems to have expired long ago

    • +3

Ideally get somebody to sit next to you and fart regularly for the entire 8-12 hour duration of your play session, too.

      • And don't clean your keyboard, mouse, phone (and toilet) for the next little while for the genuine stickiness feel

  • whats the cheapest flight with ffb?

  • Looks good, bah no military aircraft

    • Didn't only a few editions of Flight Simulator actually have military aircraft? And even then it was at most 2 or 3 of them and you couldn't fire any weapons or dogfight against enemy bogies.

Obviously there was Combat Flight Simulator but the last version of that came out in 2002.

      • I know its not a shooter but was hoping at least something like; long range reconnaissance, AWACS, acrobatics crafts, maybe even UAVs. Just something different and compare to civilian aircraft in terms of handling and performance.

        • Sounds like you what you want to be playing is DCS World? You could quite easily create "flight-only" missions with no actual combat (they would still require win conditions and objectives, but you can just ignore them and place virtually no enemies on the map).

            • +2

@Bid Sniper: The base game is free and comes with two flight models (Su-25T Frogfoot and TF-51D Mustang). Granted, these two base flight models are what they refer to as "low-fidelity" (more arcade simulations), compared to the ones offered in the DLCs which are "high-fidelity", ultra-realistic simulations with fully interactable cockpits (e.g. every switch, knob and dial can be clicked on) and very true-to-life flight dynamics/physics modelling (though you can extensively tailor the realism in the in-game settings).

Still, they're a good introduction into the DCS experience and even the arcade flight models are extremely challenging to master and stay alive in. You also get the same mission editor included with the paid DLC content, which has hundreds of land, sea and air units to choose from for friendly and enemy AI-controlled forces plus the default, very large and detailed Caucasus region map (which has dozens of cities, towns, airbases, etc).

The mission editor is probably one of the biggest selling points of DCS as you can easily import community-created content or make everything yourself from 5-minute practice missions where you fly around to try random maneuvers or just hoon around in a new flight model dropping unlimited ordnance all over the countryside, all the way upto 10-hour long sorties in combined arms engagements with multiple wingmen, carrier battle groups, hundreds of aircraft in the sky, complicated air defense networks and huge ground battles with AI controlled vehicles (though you better have a damn good PC for those kinds of missions).

Most of the DLCs have been pretty cheap historically during sales, but it's been a while since they've been discounted.

The most obvious DLC pack to get is Flaming Cliffs 3 (which has been as low as $12.94 AUD), and which comes with 7 of the most desirable flight models (imo) along with an entire campaign.

DCS World seems daunting at first, but it's as complicated as you want it to be and you don't have to touch the hardcore mechanics if you don't want to. It can basically be a more detailed version of Tom Clancy's HAWX if you prefer and once you climb that learning curve, you can slowly up the ante in the realism settings.

              • @Gnostikos: The P-51D is clickable at least.

So far I've only bought Flaming Cliffs 3 and Huey. I only bought in the recent COVID deal but havebeen enjoying them.

Keep in mind you can either buy on Steam or directly from the DCS world launcher. But you can't use content bought on one from the other. I bought direct to give the devs a bigger piece of the pie (and also assume they will have better deals direct in future, they had better/longer deals in the recent sale for example).

    • With enough duct tape, any aircraft can be a military aircraft

  • What time does this drop today? It's not in the Game Pass at the moment. I'm assuming it's a US time drop??

    • You should be able to grab it direct from the MS Store on Win 10 (I have game pass so it's showing as free). It's currently downloading about 100GB … might take a while.

    • https://www.flightsimulator.com/microsoft-flight-simulator-r… From Aug 17 1400 UTC, which should have been midnight last night.

I pre-installed via Game Pass and still am getting msg that it's too early when I tried to launch at mid day today.

Working for anyone else yet ?

      • I launched at about 6.30am today and it was stuck on a loading screen. I quit and restart, then it started downloading additional content/assets. It is taking a damn long time. Now on 13.82GiB of 91.36GiB
Might be 1 or 2 days before I can play

        • I managed to get to the loading screen instead of seeing the "Too Early" message. Downloading update now as well.

Was hoping that the pre-install option would have downloaded these previously but guess not …

  • +2

Try these tips for download/update issues, esp the netsh command. My speeds have increased dramatically after doing this and restarting the app.
    https://www.windowscentral.com/how-fix-microsoft-flight-simu…

    • bah this doesn't actually seem to be going any faster now

      • Yeah I thought I had it preinstalled. Got a rude shock at midnight. Left it to download and went to bed. Came back in the morning and it was cancelled. Ended up taking about 11 hours.

  • so is this normal XBOX game pass or is it additional subscription?

    • It is separate or you can get the combined ULTIMATE game pass.

  • 1080ti prepare to get used

    • …And by that we mean violated.

  • Will a 2070 Super be enough for this game?

    • +1

Yes. Well above the minimum. Just don't expect to turn the details up all the way.

    • i played it just now, flew from Syd to cbr and it was fine for a 1070, probably was getting 25FPS on high.

      • +1

Did you have to quarantine after you landed?

        • +1

my approach had a vertical speed of -5000ft/m it wasn't a survivable landing to go into quarantine, if you know what I mean.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Lay more than eggs on the way down?

            • @Abaddon: lets say you dont wanna crash land a plane with eggs in it.

  • +2

Frickin' $14000 PC upgrade here I come :(

    • +1

How many are you buying :(

      • +1

Just one :D j/k .. but I think since the game is part of Game Pass, I may treat myself to some sim-like upgrades to the PC, which will probably cost in the area of $14k :/

  • Damn Xbox game pass seems like a great deal especially for only $1 for its first month and then $5 afterwards

  • signed up but the load will not install for me on pc

  • +1

    YUUSSS! This is awesome news!

  • +1

Finally! Anyone remember the first version on Flight Sim that you bought from Harvey Norman in a box containing 5 floppy disks.

The best part was the aircraft carrier with fighter jets taking off

  • Heck yes!

  • Update your windows first guys.

  • -8

This isn't a deal, it's part of gamepass.

  • Yep, eveyrone make sure all Windows Updates are complete. Then also load Microsoft Store and complete ALL updates first.

Anybody having issues with slow download speeds, there are three fixes. VPN worked for me.

Disable energy saving feature from your computer's internet adapter

1- Open your windows CMD as Administrator

2- Enter this command and press enter:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

3- It will display an "Ok." when everything is done.

Note: may require you to restart your PC

    Change DNS server

    Use a VPN

    • turn on your VPN

I turned on my VPN and immediately went from being capped around got 1-5Mbps to getting my maximum 110Mpbs. Should complete your download in mere hours.

    • so weird how using a VPN sped this up for me too

  • So i can get this $99 game just by joining gamepass for the initial $1 offer and $5 for the 2nd month?

    • +4

Yes, as long as you're subbed you have access to this game and the entire library on Xbox Game Pass.

  • +1

    Ok I've realised I can't fly a plane for sh*t

  • Just keeps getting better now a $7.50 ir tracker just by using your phone currently in beta but promising. :)
