how much is your iPad Pro again?

It's great as a portable display for Switch, movie, mobile gaming etc whilst on holiday/camping etc.

      • Does it work with the Switch? I didn't think it would.

        • +2

My thoughts too, doesn’t have HDMI. Neg voters care to explain?

      • +24

how much is your iPad Pro again?

        mg_k Wins. FATALITY.

    • +19

Can u use ipad pro as monitor for ur desktop?

      • If you are using Catalina OS on your Mac, it has a feature called Side Car where you can use the iPad as an extended screen. There is minimal latency as they are designed for each other in the OS.

        • +1

What if your desktop is Windoes?

        • I use splashtop xdisplay (free!), though main issue I’ve found with it is that it disconnects/reconnects when the screen is idle (no activity) but is fine if you leave something on it that is consistently updating like Spotify, chat, monitoring tools etc. Can’t compare it to duet as I haven’t used it

Might be able to work around it with a subtle animated bg perhaps too

Unsure if this issue is specific to my ipad (really old iPad 2/3) as I can’t seem to find much info online

      • there is an program called Duet that can extend an ipad screen for a desktop. It is $15 on iOS app store.
on the desktop you need an application which is free (for desktop)

    • +6

A second screen, for people who travel a lot - eg. a regional salesperson I would imagine. Your iPad isn’t $198 also using your iPad as a second screen would have latency issues.

    • +7

You cant use your iPad pro as an external monitor but you could use this with your ipad pro as a dual screen setup.

        • +10

Duet is junk. Huge latency issues. Terrible refresh rate. I paid $14.99, used it for 30mins, attempted to make better and never touched again. It may be ok if you want static images / docs but don’t bother for anything like YouTube

          • +2

@Wombatstew: I also purchased this app and didn't even get to the 30 min mark, very disappointed ;-(

          • @Wombatstew: I have not experienced what you mentioned, also you mentioned you only used it for 30 mins and it was half price some time ago (~3 years or so). So I would not say your description is accurate. Also the point being that the iPad is still capable as a second display when you are on the road.

            • +2

@mikokik5: I can assure you my description is accurate as I am the one who told you what I experienced. Your description is the one not accurate to my experience. 30 minutes of the same performance problems with troubleshooting means I do not rate it well based on my experience. I purchase it a few months ago so it’s a recent version.

          • @Wombatstew: Speaking of duet, Huawei's matepad pro work seemslessly with matebook and mobile without any latency issue.

            • @Jammar: Hi,
I wanted to add that it will depend on the iPad version. If you tried the app long time ago, try again :)
I use it with a first generation iPad mini and can see YouTube without Any problems.
With an iPad Pro will be perfect

      • +1

You’ve been able to use an iPad as a second display for quite some time, first with third party apps and more recently with the built in Sidecar feature.

        • +1

Only with Macs though (without using Duet). Portable monitors can be used with both PC and Mac as they are OS agnostic.

          • +1

@Ghost47: You’re right I should have specified Mac, but the outright assertion it can’t be done was incorrect.

      • An exception is using iPad with MacBook or some other Mac

    • +14

It's a portable monitor. People can use this with their laptop when travelling for work so that they have two monitors (one on their laptop and this one). Having a second monitor tends to help with productivity, because you can see multiple apps at once over two screens. If you use window snapping in Windows you can have four applications open, two taking up half of each monitor (2 * 2 = 4).

Do you understand now? Do I need to dumb it down further for you? Maybe if you look on YouTube for "what does a portable monitor do?" you'll find more answers.

      • -6

Imagine not knowing a iPad can be used as an external monitor…

        • +4

Imagine thinking just because you can use an iPad with Sidecar that it's the same as a portable monitor that does nothing else except display an image……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

    • +3

Seriously? You're comparing a tablet to a portable screen - they're completely different devices.

The point of it is for productivity - if you're hot-desking at an office, travelling, or working from home and don't want to buy a full-size monitor, this lets you have a second screen so you can multitask or compare documents as you work.

      • +7

Think about how much 'productivity' you'll enjoy when you…

        1. buy a 2nd hand ipad for many multiples of $200

        2. do all the usual ipad setup procedures inc. create and apple id

        3. buy the app and futz around with it

        4. realise it only works in the apple ecosystem and is plagued with lag

        vs.

        1. plugging this device into a type c port of your type c device
    • -5

Totally agree that's why it's on clearance for $198

      • This is merely an ok price for a niche product. I've seen them for $200-$250 as it is.

Few people can find a use for it.

Maybe matched to a hdmi to type c dongle with a 3.5mm audio breakout?

    • +1

Does it plug into a gaming console? Nope

Your iPad is just an oversized iPhone 4

    • +2

covid19 is really taking a toll

    • It's for Netflix and chill with a special someone

  • -8

not sure if it has hdmi

    • +9

      It pretty clearly says state:

      Connectors:

      Signal Input: 1 USB Type-C

  • Store in title please.

  • Does it works with Nintendo switch?

    • +6

I own the Kogan one and it works with my Switch.

One thing to consider though is if you use a USB-C cable from your Switch to the monitor is that the display might only show the 720p image. To show 1080p on the display whilst using the Switch you might need to dock the Switch then connect the dock to the monitor (haven't tried it myself). This is because when the Switch is docked it's getting more juice.

    • Edit: nevermind.

    • I would look at the USB-C monitors on eBay.

You can use the USB-C to connect to your Switch but it also has HDMI input. I recommend using the official Nintendo power brick to power the monitor as well.

      Built in speakers too.

    • -2

No, this will not. You will need to find either a USB-C monitor that has a chip to fake itself as a switch dock and external power input (e.g. MSI MAG161V), or a monitor with an HDMI input and use it in conjunction with the OEM Nintendo Switch Dock.

  • +2

Thanks! I bought one as I have been looking to buy this for a while but then I completely forgot until just now.

  • +5

I have an older one these… they are great slim and portable.
Heads up though for Mac users… mine stopped working with my MacBook a few months back when the Mac OS was updated.
Couldn’t see if this one is Mac compatible.

    • +1

      works with macbook pro 2018

    • +2

I bought it for my macbook, and from reviews I read it seems to work out of box.

    • +1

A portable monitor stopped working with your Mac after an MacOS update? That's really weird, and bad.

    • +3

Your display likely relies on DisplayLink technology. Most like you just need to update your DisplayLink driver here to get it working: https://www.displaylink.com/downloads/macos

As for this particular monitor, it uses USB-C DisplayPort Alternate mode instead of DisplayLink, so should work fine with any USB-C Mac without a driver.

  • +2

Exactly what I need but my Thinkpad doesn't have USB-C connection :( , I loathe working off my laptop screen alone but hate being tied to my desk also.

    • There are regular USB versions too

      • of the same model? Looked around for a few mins but couldn't seem to find one that's not USB-C

    • There’s other noir table monitors which use display link over USB which will work.

  • Very handy, but brightness is an issue (and is to be expected with a display like this)

    • was looking at lenovo version (300 cd) but it’s $150 more

  • +1

Thanks OP, have been on the lookout for a while for one of these, great price.

  • +2

I have had one of these since October. Works good but Matt finish which is a deal breaker for some people.

  • +3

OP you have won the internet today. This will be great for my software development.

  • +5

I have one of this, just be aware that the screen is quite dim with not a wide viewing angles,so it would not work if there is a lot of sunlight and you would need books or something to adjust it for viewing

    • +2

Thanks for pointing this out. The reviews also back this up. 171 nits is really poor.

Other than that it seems like a good portable monitor and definitely a good buy for some.

  • +2

Thank you OP! Perfect for when I travel for work and do presentations :)

The community here is so toxic. Can't take someone's opinion

      • +5

This is a 'mah freeze peach' thing.

You're free to express what you like within community guidelines. That is expressing an opinion. If your opinion is controversial or ill informed do you expect everyone to let it skate by???

People will call you out. Its obvious who the snowflakes are.

        • -6

Hence the voting system. Hence the top comment being down voted has nothing to do with ozb being a toxic community as it reflects majority's view

    • +1

      Can so!

    • +4

What opinion are you talking about? That an iPad actually isn't the same thing as a portable monitor?

It's like if a deal came up for a car. "What's the point of this I have a skateboard?" would you really compare a car to a skateboard?

    • +3

Yea this place has become a dump

  • Likely a stupid question but based on some comparability comments / reviews.

I have a small desk space taken up by asus pg279q and looking for a small monitor for use as a secondary while gaming. Would this one work with a desktop PC. Mobo has usb3 but I run current monitor off the gtx1080 without.

I tried duet display with a tablet but too much lag and chop.

    • +1

No. You'll need a portable monitor with a separate HDMI input. I personally use the MSI MAG161V.

Alternatively, if you upgrade to a RTX video card with a USB-C port you can use this monitor (but I suspect you'll struggle to find a full featured USB-C cable long enough for your needs)

      • Are you saying that a USB-C monitor can't be used alongside HDMI monitors? I was looking at this setup for a triple display, mainly for video output from an editing app.

    • Take a look at aliexpress, and look at the cheapest brands. They usually come with hdmi and micro usb/usb-c. Cost between 100-130, or 210-230 for touch screen.

      • +1

I hate to ask, but are there any particular models/brands for those on Aliexpress that you world recommend? There are so many brands and difficult to distinguish what's decent and what isn't.

        • Most of them are probably using the same panel, just pick the one with the feature you want. Just don't believe that you'll actually get hdr or 2ms, those are lies lol.

I got the john will 13.3" touch screen for 220 bucks a while back and it works great for me. However, mine doesn't come with usb-c, if you want that, try the eyoyo 13.3 for 120 bucks.

As for build quality, honestly, dunno. This is still a new market, so not many respectable sources played with it yet.

          Things to be careful of:

          • eyoyo have a dirt cheap 13.3" for 90 bucks (100 including tax), and that seems to have poorer contrast and poor ports compared to their 120 bucks brother.

          • wemaxit sells tn variants.

          • @Wonderfool: Thanks for your reply. Just read some of the reviews for the Eyoyo monitors and they seem decent for the price. It's a shame they only come with mini HDMI and not standard..but I guess you can't be choosy at that price.

  • +6

    I don't need this

    I don't need this

Someone please convince me not to buy this!

    • +11

Yes, it is more a toy for most people. The brightness is low (and IPS already have lower brightness in general). USB-C only means you are limited to Macbooks, Laptops with USB-C supporting Alt mode+PD (or Thunderbolt 3), Switch, and NUCs. When you really think about it, Macbooks and laptops would have better screen to start with and you actually would prefer a 2K or 4K display for a laptop or Macbook with USB-C. Switch, when you are on the move, aren't you mainly after the portability?

You are buying a low end spec E-IPS based screen. As for handy on the move or presentation, only if you plan to live in sub-par accommodation or your client or workplace have ancient tech. With most workplace moving to 4K displays already, it is just an excuse we give to ourselves to buy another toy. And, no, you don't want to present on this 14 inch display so if you cannot get your laptop, iPad/Pro, phone to display on the projector or TV in the meeting room, this thing won't save you.

And, there is something more important than a shinny new toy, your eyes. 14 inch external monitor is a compromise for your eyes (for work).

      • +3

"With most workplace moving to 4K displays already".
Yeah maybe if you work in VFX. Most workplaces are NOT going 4k monitors any time soon. Most gamers don't run 4k monitors.

        • This device requires USB-C with Alt mode or Thunderbolt. Let's think about it for a moment, most people with that type of device deep down would either want or have a 4K display. Certainly, some might still have 1080p, but it is hard to imagine these people don't have 4K in their plan at least.

Most gamers don't run 4k monitors

I did mention 2K and I wrote "prefer". I am a casual gamer and I am already on 2K and 4K setup. My point is whether spending $198 on a 14 inch portable, below par (for gaming for sure) 1080p E-IPS display is really worthwhile for people with Thunderbolt or USB-C with Alt mode setup.

If this display had HDMI (or even microHDMI) input + USB-A (or microUSB or USB-C) just for power input, then it would be quite different. A lot of devices can use it and it would make sense.

      • +6

The single USB-C port on this as well as no speakers or headphone jack makes it a pretty bad product. If it had HDMI or mini-HDMI that would make it a lot more versatile.

      • +1

4K in anything less than 32" is dumb dumb dumb.

You'd have to be like Legolas or something.

        • I laughed. Well done.

    • -1

      I don’t need this.
I may need this and I could alway resell it.
I must have this because its a bargain!
I’ll get two of this :)

  • +2

I kinda hate that they don't mention anywhere at all in the documentation that it has more requirements than just a type-c port.
Type-C ports can be: USB2, USB3, USB3.1, USB3.2 etc, and may or may not include support for Power Delivery or Alt-DP. Thunderbolt etc.

From a quick bit of research, you will need both Type-C PD (power delivery) and Alt-DP for this to work. And I think Thunderbolt always has them. So it should in theory always work on a Thunderbolt Type-c port.

    • +1

They're going to get heaps of returns and you may get a 'refurb' if you buy one.

      • Most OZBers buying this without the necessary devices will use it as an excuse to buy more toys to work with it.

    • Cant +1 you enough re: USB type-C as well as Alt-DP.

I thought it was just USB type-c required. Plugged a similar portable monitor (Asus MB16) into work laptop (1.5yo Lenovo T470), runs just fine straight off the bat. Plugged into usb type-c port of my desktop Asus z390-e motherboard, wouldn't work. Even using the included usb type-c to usb type-a adapter wouldn't work until I downloaded drivers from the Asus website.

TLDR: YMMV even using an adapter back to USB type-a

      • +2

Forget about running this with a desktop (unless you have an nVidia graphics card with USB-C port) or your motherboard has thunderbolt 3 ports. Honestly, this isn't for desktops. If you own a desktop with USB-C with Alt mode + PD support or TB3 ports, surely you would pair it with at least a 1440p display or a 4K display. You wouldn't want to use a sub-par E-IPS that's only 14 inch.

        • Yes, I agree that's exactly what the motherboard makers were probably thinking!

I have a dual screen setup (3440x1440 UW + 1080p), but given I also had the Asus MB16, i thought i'd connect it up as a 3rd screen for ishts and giggles (eg/ displaying music playlist, or a youtube video i'm really just listening to).

          • +1

@dzf: It's the way chipset is designed (and how alt-mode works). With AMD CPUs getting popular, it is difficult to do Alt mode (since there is no embedded GPU). Then, even if you have an external display, expecting M/B to do all that effect to wire the external GPU across the port is wishful thinking.

MP16 is more flexible. It is a touch screen isn't it?
