  • So, can i cancel my account and have my wife sign up for a new one to get this discount? Will she be considered as a new customer even if it's the same address??

    • +5

Is it really worth the hassle for $60?

      • +30

Check the URL where you've just asked that question

        • +14

It's funny how it's the same place where some spend 2 grand on a mobile phone

          • +1

@Laziofogna: Only when we can sign up as a new Telstra customer, and cancel on the contract to get a great deal.

          • +12

@Laziofogna: …how did you think we managed to get the 2 grand together ;)

I've been ISP-hopping all over the show, from Exetel to MyRepublic to Telecube to Barefoot to ABB and now Superloop. Life is expensive, costs rising much faster than income, and I can't afford to pass on savings.

The only reason I'm not moving ISP now is because newer (COVID-19 era) prices are more than my current pricing.

      • +3

There is a saying that even bees have meat on their legs.

      • +1

hand in your OzB licence bucko

      • It's alright adamshere. I got called out once for saying the same thing towards using a code to save $0.75; https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53279. I have since learnt - This. Is. Ozbargaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain!

      • +6

It takes less than 15 minutes to cancel and signup under another name or different provider. $60 in 15 minutes has a $240/h opportunity cost. Do you earn more than $240/hour to make this not worth your time? I highly doubt it.

    • +8

No she won't be considered a new customer. Your address must not have had an active ABB connection for 6 months to be considered a "new customer" afaik.

      • +3

Hmm, so if I just move in a rented property and the previous renter did have an active ABB connection, that means I am not eligible, is that right?

        • +1

Yep, so was a friends experience.

Well, no, not strictly. they allow you to send new rental proof; so you have to be OK sharing that info.

        • +2

You're eligible. Aussie BB might ask for proof.

        • +1

you can possibly get the referral discount from an existing customer. both you and they get $50 off. not sure if it is also limited to "new" connections though.

    • Not sure about ABB, but I did it recently with super loop, two months after I cancelled the account with them under my name.

Got discount applied anyway when signing up with my wife's name, same address.

  • Any free month coupons around?

    • +9
      • +7

So you'd save more using that deal anyway, unless you're seriously considering 12/1..

          • +19

@smogg: Please hand over your ozbargain badge..

          • +6

@smogg: Your taking a $60 saving vs a $89 saving. Hand in your OzB badge :-)

            • -3

@Twix: Hmm agreed but I do get 100/20mbps speeds from ABB for another 5 months at the cost of $29 savings. I'm okay with that ;D

              • +5

@smogg: You can stay with ABB for another 5 months @ $89 per month too…

What you are suggesting is giving up a bigger upfront discount for a smaller discount spread over 6 months..

                • -2

                  @victorheaven: Brain too small.

                • +9

@victorheaven: Yeah my bad, that'd come out better savings. Forgive me OzB'ers :(

                  • +4

@smogg: you need to have more faith in the OZB License Police. if they suggest it is time to hand in your license then you need to check your math. i'll just issue a caution in this case.

                    • +5

@Antikythera: I need some more sleep, I was calculating $20 discount (old deals) every month for some reason.

        • This should really be in the item description as not everyone reads the comments…

  • +6

One day, these types of promotion will apply to existing customers

    • +10

As a former ABB customer, I say vote with your wallet

      • Former meaning you have a different provider now?

        • +13

          Good deduction

          • +1

@muwu: Is there a particular reason or just the price if I can ask. And who did you choose?

            • +5

@Laziofogna: Superloop. They gave me 100/40 instead of nerfing to the new 100/20. I've got a locked in price which is currently less than every 100/20 plan on the current market. I'm set until something better comes along, which won't be for a very long time by the looks of how value is going backwards in the NBN provider market for the last 12 months

              • @muwu: Yeah, prices increased a lot. I joined them on a $70 50/20 plan with $20 discount for 6 months, so I paid $50. It's now back up to $70, but new members pay $78 for the same plan now.

              • +1

@muwu: Same situation here. My grandfathered Superloop 100/40 plan is cheaper than what's available. I'm not willing to give that up!

            • +4

@Laziofogna: As another former; im with Tangerine.

Local techs mobile number was provoded in case of line faults.

International tech Call center was quick and polite.

Local billing support was super helpful when my 1St month didnt go smooth (my fault, but they fixed it).

              • @MasterScythe: thanks for the comments, I'm considering leaving ABB too. I have a plan which was purchased a few years back, $5 less than now offered. They refused to keep the discount when asked to upgrade to a higher tier. Cheaper + unlimited plans available with TPG/iiNET/Tangerine for even less than I was willing to pay ABB for a limited plan.

              • @MasterScythe: Does Tangerine have a good reputation? I need to get off Telstra who just sent me an email saying my NBN is going up $20 /month from next month.

      • +3

        Yep I left too.

Promised me things in voice recording.

Aknowledged they said it, but refused to uphold it.

Sent me someone elses PM reply leaking their details; I had to contact the user to let them know; they didnt.

Apparently Refused to release my VoIP number to my new provider (apparently theres a code?) Eventually got it.

Im not gonna go through the whole story, but the dishonesty and the passive agressive discussion with the boss, means I wont be back.

        • +1

So much for their great service, huh? I always thought they have agents here bragging about their brand.

          • +2

@Laziofogna: Oh, depending where you stand, you could argue either way.

Was I petty leaving a company over a couple of hundred dollars?

Or were they petty for refusing their recorded assurances?

I can assure you their sales staff are the friendliest most Aussie nice people ive ever dealt with.

Honestly, even the support staff were nice.

Its only when it got to the corporate level staff that I saw what I saw, and im of the opinion that crap flows downstream, so I wasnt waiting.

          • +2

            @Laziofogna:

So much for their great service, huh?

In my experience (not with ABB), "great service" often depends on the representative you get on the day.

Yes, some businesses will try to make it a culture, but it doesn't always take and doesn't always stick.

    • Some ABB guy threatened the other day prices might go up in the next future

      • They will loose a lot of customers if they start jacking prices…too many other ISP's waiting to take up the people leaving.

      • +2

Pricing across a few ISPs could go up if NBN doesn't play ball & extend the bonus CVC.

        • -1

I don't see why…if the CNC drops back to the rate it was pre-covid then they have no right to up the prices…if the speed falls below pre-covid speed doesn't that imply that the ISP is oversubscribing rather than buying additional bandwidth to cope with additional customers?

          • +1

@Ben Kenobi: I hope traffic drops. At this stage everyone is using more bandwidth & the bundled CVC is just enough for now. The next CVC update is due in May 2021. ISPs want NBN to extend the bonus CVC or better yet move to a AVC only model & remove artificial CVC all together.

Yeah it's a possibility ISPs can oversub or existing customers are using up more bandwidth.

Aussie Broadband flags the impact of usage 10% above predictions

            • @Twix: You would hope that NBN come to the party for the good of Australia…if we are working from home then NBN should support that…no reason for them to profit from the outbreak…makes them no better than all the TP\mask scammers out there gouging the public. The ISP's could give QOS preference to Office 365 and Google services etc. as the business url's are the higher priority (assuming people are using the excess home bandwidth for work and not Netflicks!)

              • @Ben Kenobi: Bonus CVC is due to expire August 19 & even if NBN extend bonus CVC it's just a band aid solution to a larger problem.

You'll find it's the night time traffic that ISPs are talking about.

              • @Ben Kenobi: NBN have just extended bonus CVC an extra month to September 19.

  • How is ABB? say compared to Optus

    • +8

One thing I am sure, Optus does not have under cover hypers on Ozbargain.

      • totally agree…

      • +1

ABB's service is super reliable and their peak speeds are good. Their service is held in such high regard because they truly deliver this. Even though I'm with Superloop now (who are also good, but customer service isn't as good as ABB for when you need them), I'd still be glad to recommend ABB.

      • +3

OR because they've adequately invested in levels of service and support that people are actually advocates?

Also if ABB is reading this and want to pay me to hype them - inbox me! LMAO

      • -4

What sort of absolute garbage is that.

Might be the dumbest thing I've read on the internet today, and I'm not even with ABB atmo

    • Its worth seeing who is good in your state.

For example, vocus is apparently painful slow in Sydney, but in QLD, vocus sellers seem to be one of the fastest and most stable.

Its why I chose tangerine in the first place.

    • Depends what your using the internet for?

    • +1

From my experience and others Optus has poor international connectivity compared to ABB (Both in speeds and latency)

    • -4

Optus is better but you'll also pay a bit more for the slightly faster peak speeds, better stability and customer service.

Been extremely happy with Optus 100/40 for past 2 years. No lock in contract, loyalty discount, no modem charge.

      • Optus is probably the single worst possible choice for NBN, the number of issues they have had over the years is crazy.

Like, I can only assume your comment is satire.

        • +1

No? I'm on Optus 100/40 FTTC for 2 years now and haven't had any issues, and the peak speeds are 95mbps.

Paying $95/month and didn't pay a cent for installation or modem.

    • +1

I am leaving floptus via a TIO complaint they are the biggest dogs. Easily the worst customer service all overseas who stuff you around and leave you on hold. I will never recommend that joke of a company to anyone and will always save anyone who considers them an option from them with how shit they are.

ABB who I just signed up to yesterday and just saw this applied the offer for me within 60 seconds via their online chat without question. Hopefully this service continues.

      Floptus.

      • What happened with Optus?
Are you happy to share details?

  • +3

No. Still waiting for $20 off

  • +8

First month free is a better deal in every single aspect.

    • Agree and I can only assume they are doing this to prevent NBN hoppers who jump from free month to free month around the suppliers. Makes sense why they have done this BUT also stops some from giving them a go. Hard to know which is better for them financially in the long term.

  • +1

I live in an apartment and I have no choice, but to choose a dedicated provider called LBNCo. I pay around the same price, so 80 bucks for a 50/20 unlimited package. I thought it's a pretty bad deal, but it looks like it's a fairly standard price in the NBN/ fiber space. Fiber internet seems ridiculously expensive IMO compared to some of the mobile plans available out there.

  • +1

Can you stack this deal with a friends referral? Been thinking of making the switch as a mate has.

Shame this isn't for the 1000/40 plans though.

    • Hi Narull,

Unfortunately you cannot stack promos with our refer-a-friend program.

      Cheers, Nicole

      • What's the bestest NBN deal for new customers on HFC?
Moving into a new house next week …

        • Hi there,

Our promotions are across all connection types unless otherwise stated.

On HFC, the only plans you probably won't be able to get a discount on are the higher speed plans like the 250/25 and the Home Ultrafast.

In terms of a discount, you have a choice of $10 off for 6 months with the code SAVE10MONTH or there is a free month code on OzBargain as well that you could use.

          Cheers, Nicole

    • You can just do refer a friend on 1000/50.

  • I got FTTC for my place. Anyone know what happens when I move address? Can i transfer the connection to new address without incurring any fees?

    • FTTP, HFC & FTTC = NBN give you a new connection box or if it's a rental the ex tenant is meant to leave you the one already installed.

FTTN & FTTB = source your own VDSL modem.

      No fees.

  • +1

Mate's normal price for 100/20 plan is $80?
Recently moved from Belong and getting +80Mbps, which I'm pretty happy with on FTTN.

    • What is the different between belong and mate?

      • Belong don't offer 100/20 plan on FTTN line.

  • i hate these limited time discounts on subscriptions that bank on you being too lazy to switch afterwards, over 10 years $10/m = $1200 so in the long run it's less of a hassle just to find someone with consistently lower rates

    • +1

Yeah my 6 months $20 discount will end next month with ABB. Looking to unfortunately move even though the customer service has been top notch.

  • +2

Damn I just signed up to their (unadvertised) 1000/50 plan this week. Not sure if this would have applied tho. These guys have been brilliant so far, blazing quick 900+Mbps speed test during peak. My connection was live and set up 60 mins after I submitted my application.

    • Show us a pic of your battlestation?

    • This deal doesn't apply to 1000/50.

  • -2

Vodafone NBN is still cheaper than this

    • But the most awful support should anything go wrong……and even after.
Stay well clear of Vodafone for now is my advice and speaking from experience dealing with my own recent past experiences and multiple current client accounts. Their offshore support are bottom level juniors who hardly understand NBN and know nothing about networking. No good at all (the worst I have experienced in many years). Hopefully they improve as they do offer 4G backup option.

      • Probably will only get worse now that they have merged with TPG.

    • Why the downvote? I'm currently using them since two years and so far no issue to report

      • and wonder why the downvote on my comment, I also have had multiple experiences with Vodafone and still do. The most disgusting support I have ever experienced (personal and ongoing client Level) and that's saying a lot as deal with many companies daily for last 30 years. Stay well clear of them as you will be in trouble when things go wrong. Out of last 10 jobs logged all 100% failed to be dealt with properly. Its "Kiddie Support" and very very poorly trained. Even their Stores have issues trying to get answer from Support! Awful!

  • +6

I am an IT engineer and have been with many different providers for home and work.
I can tell you ABB is the best provider in terms of support and speed that I have been with.
I have tried cheap ones and expensive ones and this well worth the extra $$ compare to cheap ones and beats the expensive ones in service. I hope this helps some.

    • +2

100% impressed with ABB's service, performance, and self-service tools!

    • Launtel are equally good. Have used both but sticking with Launtel for now.

    • May i ask if you know if different ISP will have different connectivity to oversea server to watch oversea contents? Im keen to know as i am not sure about this.

      • I suspect that they do Or somehow manage overseas connections.
Reason: I download a lot out of a Server in France (client backups which are large). Aussie Broadband were always really slow @ approx 2 to 3 MB/s if lucky on a 100 plan so had to move to Launtel who are full speed. And get a good 10MB/s. Vodafone had same issue where as TPG no problems.
The carriers say they don't block or slow things but somewhere in the chain things are not apples for apples.

ABB support are good but I didn't have the time to spend days tracking the issue with logs and traffic monitoring and had to move on. Its a weird one as I believe when they said that the didn't knowingly place restrictions on overseas traffic. Europe being the worst. US was always fine on all.

      • +1

They definitely do. The routes taken to a specific location/server won't always be the same between ISPs, and this will impact the speed and latency. Lot of ISPs have a looking glass you can check their routes/pings with.
        Aussie: https://lg.aussiebroadband.com.au/
        Launtel: https://lg.launtel.net.au/
        Superloop: https://lg.superloop.com/lg/
Optus: http://looking-glass.optus.net.au/lg/ (Note: consistently has the worst results)

        • Thanks for those links. Its the fact that they deny any slowdowns and say "Oh should be fine and full speed" no matter that I tell/Prove to them i.e. if I use Carrier A, is fine and yet on their systems slow speeds. Have tested a few over the last year and some carriers are awful to Europe (download speeds from Dedicated Server). They always say speeds aren't controlled by them and that All carriers share the same supplier NBN connections. I gave up talking to them and just selected a carrier that worked well.
In their defence. Aussie Broadband (unlike most) were interested in getting to the bottom of it with tests etc BUT at the time I had to move on (time restraints). Wish I had the time then as would love to know exact reason and across some (not all) carriers.
