I've seen people haggle it down to around this price, from JB, when it was $1079. So I'm assuming it can be taken down a bit further

IIRC it's a RX-V371 amp, which is pretty far down in the capability stakes.
im looking for something cheap that doesnt sound cheap, but this is a little more than i want to spend, any suggestions, wireless would be good if possible

there are many forums that will offer advice on audio equipment. there are forums specific to audio/hometheatre, but lots have subforums too. overclockers.com.au is a pc forum, but they have a subforum for audio, where there would be many people able to help.
with that in mind, a lot of people recommend the yamaha 696s, and consider them probably the best for the pricerange.
there is one yamaha setup around $500 which sounds excellent for the money. check yamaha website for more info..

Fwiw I have a Yamaha micro hi fi which is outstanding power for the price and size. The amp feels like its got two bricks inside it.
Theres a receipt on whirlpool from JBHiFi selling this at $820. The sales rep I spoke to didnt want to match that but gave me $850.
I picked it up today for $810 :-)

Good price on the stereo but they sure made up the difference with that $40 RCA cable.
Damn nice price. My sales rep was a bit of a jerk, said that he's been in the industry too long and suspects the receipt was a fake (i.e. printed by someones mate who was an employee). TBH I had been putting off buying a system for so long that I figured for $30 it wasnt worth finding someone else/another store. And he game me decent deals on a second system for another room (after price matching and haggling).
Does anyone know if this system will output HDMI if it's set to composite/component input?
Im returning that $40 rca cable sometime tomorrow. Found one at home which is prrfect for the job.
Overall im pretty happy with this system for this price. No doubt there are heaps better powerfull systems there but they cost more too.
I wanted to buy yamaha iphone dock for about $150 buy found its very easy to use airplay with my apple tv box. So if you have appletv2, you can play directly through that and no need for yamaha iphone dock.
