MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX mATX Motherboard $119 + Delivery @ Umart

180

Looks like a good deal for a board with 4 DIMM slots and 4 Vcore phases with a heatsink (albeit whimpy). Surprisingly it also has more than one chassis fan header (2), a rarity on cheap mATX boards.

To save you the trouble I went through the VRM tier list and it can handle an OC'd 3600/3600X with passive cooling and an OC'd 3700X/3800X with a little airflow.

Better pickup without Delivery from MSY. Also this is MB has one of the worst VRM setups out there

But can you complain for the price?

I updated the post btw, it probably seemed like I was overselling the VRMs.

No idea why you are getting so many down-votes on your comments. You are not saying this is a good board, but that it is good for the price. Which it is.

    • worst VRM setups

mortar has the same vrm, just bigger heatsink, yet mortar is highly rated, and capable of running oc'ed 2700x or even 3950x , without overheating/throttling.

      • Indeed and I made sure to say VRM setup as opposed to VRM alone. Spending another $50 to ensure 2 years down the line when you want to upgrade to an R3900 or ~R4700, you don't have to upgrade the whole Mobo is justifiable spending I would say.

The linked comment also did not mention the Ram speed rating for Mortar vs VDH. Mortar supports up to 4300 vs VDH's 3800. Again just keeping in mind future-proofing

          R3900 or ~R4700

And this is where your logic has fallen apart. Performance doesn't equal VRM power needed, the 2700X draws more power than a 3700X, but based on your logic a 2700X would be fine on a certain board but a 3700X not? The 3900X is a 105W part (or 95W one of the two), and the 4700X will probably be a 65W part, now unless I'm dumb the 4700X won't need VRMs as powerful as the 3900X would.

According to this tier list they are different.

Okay I got negged? My point is that the tier list shows they use different FETs, I'm not saying they score differently on the list, that's pointing out the obvious.

        • didn't neg you , but i see SM4337 + SM4503

@dcep: I believe you were looking at the Pro-VDH Plus, not the Pro-VDH MAX. The VDH MAX uses PKsomethingsomethingsomething.

        • +1

that picture is a little old, the Pro-VDH max uses the same VRM as the mortar max, but the mortar max has bigger heatsinks.

          • @Rauland: Wtf they're both 1.4! You're right though, my bad.

  • Can't complain about the price but if you're building a budget PC today you'd get one of the ~$119 boards from CPL and get the 1600AF at the same time and save on shipping.

They also have F4-3200C16D-16GIS in stock for $105 which is b-die

    • Yeah I was about to mention the 1600AF deal! Would make a good pairing, almost the same price as a 3600 alone.

The F4-3200C16D-16GIS is not B-die unless you got extremely lucky, Thaiphoon will claim it is but it's 99% of the time Samsung C-die or Hynix CJR. You can check with the "042" code on the sticker, if it ends with 10C it's Samsung C-die, 10B it's Samsung B-die and if it's neither I'm pretty sure it's Hynix CJR.

I believe you could get CPL to price match MSY who have it for $119, I have gotten them to price match before despite them not having such policy.

  • when USB 4 comes out, do I need to buy a new motherboard to support it or can I buy an add on to put it in an existing motherboard, cause not sure if I should buy the B450 or B550 atm

    • +2

I don't think either will have USB 4, maybe a PCIe card could work. I doubt USB 4 will happen though, we'll just get USB 3.2 Gen37! /s

  • I found the VRM tier list very useful. Thanks for sharing!

  • is this good enough for a 3700x no overclocking? or 2700x?

    just want a cheap mobo

    • Yeah it's fine for a 3700X, for 2700X you'll want intake fans near the VRMs.

    • yes, make sure you're using down-draft cpu cooler / stock cooler , and turn of PBO

      • cool thanks!

        • Nah you're good for PBO on the 3700X (it will limit itself if necessary, but the VRMs are up to the task), 2700X probably not though.

    • It can run a 3700x or 3800x on stock, but you'll want extra cooling if you plan to overclock.

I bought this last year, my future upgrade plan is to get a cheap 3800x/3700x once AM4 is dead.

      • According to the tier list it can run a 3700X/3800X OC in a closed case.

        • It's possible, but I've read pretty conflicting things about whether an OC on budget tier B450 boards is worth it due to VRM throttling. That and the reduced lifespan of the board, granted by then I'd be looking to upgrade to AM5 anyway.

          • @Jolakot: I've had an all core 3.95GHz on my 3500X with the Biostar B45M2 and it doesn't break a sweat with only 50A core current under Prime95. I highly doubt even a 3700X OC'd would use more than 90A. And if it does it'd be in an extremely unrealistic workload.

  • Anyone have experience with CPL, umart and centrecom? I am in WA dont want end up with warranty issues. Thanks.

    • CPL - Never ended up buying anything from them because their website's stock levels were inaccurate. Staff at West Melbourne thought they were comedians.

Centrecom - Good prices and decent staff. Stock levels are accurate on their site.

The reason I don't call is because that's social interaction and I don't support it.
