I'd love to justify one of these, but my Note 9 is still just too good. I've never had a phone last more than a couple of years without severe slowdowns but this little guy keeps on plodding along just fine. I might wait for the Note 30… or even the 40.

    • I think with Note20, it is geared towards productivity/gaming and like you said, the note range has always been reliable and good so this Note20 may last longer than the usual 3 years cycle

    • +1

Same, can't justify upgrading from my note 9. Only thing I miss is dual sim as I got a carrier version. But then again I won't be going overseas in the near future so not really an issue I guess…

    • +1

Same note 9 user here and love my note 9 so much. Dual Sim, 512GB. The only problem is my screen is cracked. Samsung fix it for $390. Is it worth fixing or just use another year and sell it? The crack is not that bad but I'm kinda perfectionist kind of person. I'm torn.

      • I know the feeling, thankfully I've only had to deal with cracked screen protectors but even they annoyed me hugely. I gotta go with the OzBargainer mindset of pushing through for another year if you can, or even another 6 months - I'm sure these phones will be cheaper even half a year from now!

    • +2

Heck, I'm still rocking my Note 8. Only thing that could need improving is the battery but I have my dual sim, 128GB and headphone jack.

      I probably wouldn't mind a S10+ though.

      • If we're one-upping, I'm still getting by on a note 5.

Only real issue is battery life. Can struggle to make it into the evening if I'm using it a lot. Usb port died a year and a half ago, but wireless charging is adequate.

The best bargain is not upgrading.

  • Is the Ultra 512gb version dual sim? Their website is not showing specs.

    • I had a chat with Samsung rep earlier this morning and they told me it will be esim+physical sim, similar to S20 series. No hybrid sims (2x physical sims) unfortunately.

      • Funny they said that but this website has now been updated (I was up last night and this wasn't there).

        https://www.samsung.com/au/smartphones/galaxy-note20/perform…

There is Hybrid Sim and E-Sim Version but just not clear which model has it other than it's Ultra (but ultra has 512 and 256 version, which one???)

        • Looks like they are referring to the Note 20 Ultra 4G version only for hybrid sim (2x physical sims). 5G possibly only comes with eSim + 1 x physical sim. Very confusing product release to be honest.

      • Errm, some of the S20s (all?) support 3 sims, 2 cards + esim. Based on what is on the samsung site now, it's confusing, but I'd say at least the ultra must have dual sim cards. On the other hand I heard rumours 5G wouldn't have dual sims because of energy use. So yeah confusing.

      • That's annoying. The Samsung A71 I purchased earlier this year has the hybrid SIM with microSD.

Was pretty keen to offload the A71 and get the Note 20 on the assumption it was dual sim like the Note 10.

    • +2

I double checked with Samsung online, they reckon they're going to now update the web site. The specs are as follows:

      Note 20 - 1 SIM, 1 eSIM
      Note 20 ultra - 1 SIM, 1 SD, 1 eSIM.

No Australian models have dual physical sims, they're all 1 physical, 1 esim. Presumably some overseas models do, but I suspect not the Ultra 5G. But then I can't confirm that.

      • is there any disadvantage of esim as compared to physical sim ? do all carriers provide esim ?
I think 2 sims and sd card is a good option rather than hybrid sim option.

        • +1

do all carriers provide esim ?

          No they don't

          • @spaceflight: I think the big three there is no problem swapping to esim ( telstra,Optus, Vodafone). The Little carriers (aldi etc) don't know.

        • I think you'll struggle getting an esim overseas, but it's probably ok, get an esim for your Australian account leaving the physical Sim for travels.

          • +1

@xpusostomos: Or get a global roaming travel eSIM so you don't need to pay roaming or get a new SIM card in each country.

    • +2

      Confirmed from Samsung Chat.

Note 20 (all versions) - 1 SIM, 1 eSIM, No SD card slot
Note 20 Ultra (all versions) - 1 SIM, 1 eSIM, 1 SD Card slot upto 1TB.

  • Barely an upgrade over the s20 ultra, the main benefit is the laser focus and the pen.

    • What about the Microsoft integration? OneNote etc,

    • +2

It's not supposed to be. S series and Note series target different segments

      • +5

Note phones used to be significant upgrades in camera, screen size etc.

Coming out 6 months later, charging the same price and having a pen is a bad deal in my opinion, even if you need the pen.

        • +2

They deviated from that strategy since Note 10.

    • Phones have got to the point where every iteration is only going to be incrememntal. There's only so much they can pack into a small device. Most people look to upgrade every second or third generation. What else would you like to see on a phone? They tried to be innovative with the fold and there were many people complaining.

      • +1

My point is that the S series are much more innovative.

I always want a better camera.

        • +1

Well the camera in the s20 ultra was a flop so i'd imagine(hope) the camera problems would have been rectified in the note.

          • @F-22: The Note 20 is basically the same camera with a laser focus and a slightly upgraded zoom camera.

Yes you'll focus easier, thats it.

            • @samfisher5986: I read that they had improved the camera on the Note

              • @spaceflight: Yes, the main thing they improved was the focusing.

                • @samfisher5986: What about the depth of field. That is an issue with my s20 ultra.

                  • @Jklaro: Whats your issue?

                    • @samfisher5986: So being close to a subject the blur will hit hard and not gradual. Sometimes a face nose will be in focus then the eye or eye brows will be out of focus.

It's not a nice soft bokeh

                      • @Jklaro: Its just the type of lens, once you understand it you won't get weird focus issues like that unless its up close where the newer update has a close mode specifically for that and avoids the bokeh effect.

Its not a simple point and shoot camera but its a very powerful camera if you use it correctly.

                  • @Jklaro: DoF is beautiful on the S20 Ultra due to sensor size. But focus issues are terrible.

    • UWB, 120hz, much better screen brightness, UWB and cameras.

  • Does officeworks price match Samsung EPP for preorder?

    • Oohhh… that's a good question.

    • Many people have tried, including myself with the note 10+. It really depends on the person you are dealing with, however, most will deny it saying that it's not open for the general public therefore they can not price match.

    • No.

  • Why would someone pre-order anything. Just buy when it's available and reasonably priced.

    • +3

I did it because I used the 28-degree card to make this purchase. Pre-order gift is a bonus, the price difference can be claimed back later (up to 12 month) anyway.

      • You could still use 28-degree card when the product's available. Bonus is usually built into the price anyway.

        • You could still use 28-degree card when the product's available. Bonus is usually built into the price anyway.

Then you don't get the preorder bonus. How much you paid for it initially is irrelevant. Once you claim the price difference back, it will be the same price as waiting for a sale. Except you got to keep the preorder bonus, whereas if you waited for a sale, you don't get that. If you don't want the gift you can sell it.

          • -1

@lostn: What good the is pre-order bonus if the price is higher? Why go through the hassle of selling stuff? None of it makes sense.

            • @bigbadboogieman:

What good the is pre-order bonus if the price is higher?

I don't think you understand. The price is not higher. In a year's time, this thing will be cleared at half price to make way for Note 30. And that is the price you will have paid for it in the end, while having the phone on day 1 and keeping the preorder bonus.

Why go through the hassle of selling stuff? None of it makes sense.

Because free is free. Give it away if you don't want to sell it.

              • @lostn: You actually got a point that I see now. You buy now at higher and within 3 or so months claim using the purchase protection on the card if a higher discount is offered.

The only risk though is if the discount comes after the 3 month claim period.

            • +1

@bigbadboogieman: That's why price protection like 28 Degrees is so great with 12 months price protection (and becoming less common), did it with Note 10+ last year (bought on Aamzon with Cash Rewards) which had AKG NC headsets as pre-order gift. Compare that against say 30% off at EPP a moth or two later:

              Pre-order vs 30% off @ EPP after 2 months
              Purchase Price 1,599 vs 1,119
              Cashrewards -58 vs 0
              Sold Pre-Order Gift -200 vs 0
              TRS -145 vs -102
              Price protection -360 vs 0
              Total price to-date 835 vs 1,018

Based on that, still come out on top by quite a bit, and received the phone on day one. Pre-order gift + cashback + price protection gives you a lot of $ back… however this year's Note 20 Ultra is so pricey, not sure if it's worth taking the plunge.

              • @hweita: i did the same…

note 10 plus lowest i can see is 11xx…. not sure about note 20 ultra!

              • @hweita: Nice.. I am speechless. I wouldn't go so far as TRS because that's the other side on border line illegal but the difference is still around $100.

              • @hweita: I didn't know 28 degrees charge $0.95 for BPay payments. How do you pay the card.. Direct debit?

                • +1

@bigbadboogieman: I normally do a direct payment via Latitude (through their website) which avoids the 95c fee.

              • @hweita: Sounds like a great deal! Was this Amazon Australia or regular Amazon? The price protection PDS says the item must be bought in Australia. It is not clear if that excludes orders from overseas websites.

                • @nenjih: This was with Amazon Australia - 28 Deg only protects purchases in Aus like you said.

      • Are you sure this would work? Does the invoice from Samsung or Amazon indicate and pre order bonuses? 28 degrees are very particular about this.

        • When i preordered the Note 10 its invoice didn't state anything about a pre-order bonus, and i've successfully claimed back discounts with a Coles credit card.

          • @particle: Interesting. My s10+ pre-order from the Samsung store does have the voucher and offer mentioned on it.

            • @odax: It looks like when pre-ordering, the Note 20 Ultra will cost "$1848", and the buds live are listed as "$1".

I'm not sure if it'll show up like that on the invoice, but from that, couldn't you argue that the Galaxy buds were purchased at a promo price, and you spent "$1848" on the phone? So if the phone was discounted later on, you should be able to claim price protection on it because the two items should be separate on the invoice.

              From Latitude price protection pds:

The item with the lower price must be exactly the same as the item you bought, including size, colour, quality and condition, make and model number, attachments and accessories and the lower price must occur after the start of your Shopper’s Protection policy.

Price Protection does not cover a lower price:
offered as part of a special deal involving other items or benefits

    • Because preorder in these cases can be cheaper.

      • That's like gambling. You better be a gambling man/woman. Last year Note 10+ had 30% off on launch.

      • And I want the galaxy beans

    • For the free UV sanitiser box of course

  • -1

To be honest, I would rather buy it from grey import to have snapdragon chipset. One-year-less Warranty is not a huge concern to me.

Or simply get opppo find x 2 pro, less price, stronger performance

    • +5

The problem with importing it, and if you're using Samsung Pay, it will not work in Australia…YES..Weird I know.

      • Why use Samsung Pay? I've been using Google pay on my S10e for over a year and besides the occasional hiccup when using the aggressive power saving mode, it's been great.

Plus it holds my Myki card as well so I don't even carry a wallet anymore.

        • +1

For me, Samsung Pay outclass Google Pay for below reasons:

          • For GooglePay you need to keep NFC ON all the times.
Samsung Pay returns the NFC back to state in which you kept it i.e. if its OFF, SamsungPay turns it on for transaction and turn it off again after transaction, behind the scenes. If it was ON, it will remain **ON*.

I dont want to keep NFC ON all the times to avoid power usage and intruders.

          • Interface to pull it up from bottom of screen on lock screen or home screen is very handy, and having the loyalty cards stacked at same screen is easy to use

          • For NSW, you can use myki card.

          • @ChipsChicky: i like android pay as i dont even have to unlock the phone. dont have to swipe anything, dont have to press anything. just put the phone on to the reader. too much fiddling around with SamsungPay

            • @cortex: Its upto personal preference, i dont want some1 passing from nearby and tapping an eftpos and me realising later that i got $100 bill ;)
I like to keep NFC OFF, to avoid intruders.
Also, when i swipeup samsung pay, i use loyalty cards on coles woolies same time, so no need to carry all those cards in wallet.
Also, what i lost my phone with android pay ? For samsung pay, i authenticate each transaction with finger print.

              • +2

@ChipsChicky: The chances of that happening are extremely low. If it did happen, your bank would refund you.

Not telling you to change your mind. It's good to be safe. But your bank keeps your money and pays you no interest on a transaction account. You give the bank free money to invest. That's why they pay it back if you're scammed.

              • +1

@ChipsChicky: Your phone screen has to be on for Google Pay transactions to go through so that is not an issue unless you leave your screen on when your phone is in your pocket.

You can add loyalty cards and gift cards on Google Pay as well. A lot of digital gift cards now have a 'Add to G Pay' button which makes it even more convenient.

        • +1

The one thing about SamsungPay is that when it comes to update, you MUST update.

Imagine you are on a drivethru and about to pay for Maccas and when you open SamsungPay, it asked you to update first which took some time.

It happened to me once and I dropped SamsungPay straight away because of it.

      • Use Google Pay so a non-issue for me.

      • That's not true. I have a Note 9 I purchased in India and Samsung Pay works flawlessly here. The only annoying part is that the ads and additional features like Credit Scores etc. are tied to where the phone's home market. It's not a deal-breaker for me and I was able to buy the Note 9 at a ridiculously cheap price (~$900 from memory) in India thanks to a bunch of Cashback offers Samsung India runs.

        • +1

That's because the India one have the same chip as Aussie Samsung chip? Vs US version have Qualcomm chip

          • @kml22: It doesn't matter which chip it is, I have snapdragon note 10+ and have no issues using samsung pay however agree with @sld1 about the ads and additional features which you can't claim in Australia

            • @pgeorge: Didn't know that one guy at work can't get his Samsung Pay to work on his S9 US version.

      • I only use google apps and services

      • It works on my imported s10e

    • What a silly decision.. bought into the hype of a few seconds app opening time to lose local warranty. That’s called a fanboy for sure.

Yes SD is better but not worth losing local warranty on

  • +1

For those who claim on 28 degree price protection, when do you lodge the claim? Can it be done during the preorder period?

  • +2

Samsung note 20 is still bit overpriced.

Note 20 ultra specs are great but if you compare them with note 20 thats a massive cutbacks for that price.

    Plastic body
Reponse time for the pen is around 24ms
    No SD Card slot
    1080p resolutions @ 60hz display

  • Is the camera much of an improvement over the S10 and then S20?

  • Is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra a better phone than the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra? I'm just trying to understand why the s20 is more expensive than the note20.

    • Depends on what you use for.
More functionality with S pen thou

    • Note 20 don't have a sd slot and plastic back.

  • I will give a positive due to the fact we already getting discounted before release!

  • Note 20 ultra looks good on paper and appearance. I'm just concerned of the battery life. But Note 20 is actually a scam- non glass body, no high refresh rate display and premium pricing.

    • "Scam" that's a bit harsh, for me, no point upgrading from Note 9 (8GB Ram, 512GB storage) to Note 20. If people are not happy what is being offered, simply don't buy it. If you want to know the word scam, have a look at some of the Apple iPhone model, still using 720p screen..lol

  • Is there any way to get an edu.au email address without being a student?

    • +1

No, sort of defeat the purpose of giving a student discount.

  • Is it worth the upgrade from Note 8??

    • I wanted the Mystic Bronze, and I just (6 months ago) got my wife the S20U 5G 512GB.
Her phone has more battery and more RAM than the top end N20U 5G, and well… Black again…

So I'm sticking with my N8 unless there's a massive discount in the next 2 months. Wait for the next version…

    • I actually might upgrade from the note 8 to note 10+. If I can find one around the $800-900 range soon I'd be very very tempted. Phones nowadays have very small improvements so I really dont think I'll be missing out on anything major by getting 10+ at a bargain compared to note 20 ultra.

  • FYI , just received an email from Samsung
