Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 128GB $199 Upfront on Telstra $99 150GB P/M 12-Month Contract (New / Port-In Customers) @ JB Hi-Fi

2560

Greetings everyone, just spotted that JB have placed the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 4G 128gb on promotion on their $99 Per Month 150gb Plan.

Considering that this plan has a $594 Early Termination Charge, you could essentially get the phone for $793 (+pro-rated first month charge) if you cancelled the plan early :)

Think this is definitely the cheapest I've seen this phone before if you factor that in.

As always, enjoy!

          • @TomGum: I've sent them 2 phones from NSW and no problems yet but I guess it can get damaged.

      • That is for the 5G version, the one that JB are doing gives you $890 Brand New and $860 for As New Condition.
Still a good deal without having to have people haggling and low balling you.

  • Long time lurker, first time poster!
I'm a current Telstra customer from a previous JB Hi-Fi plan ($45 p/m) and I'm on my final month.
Could I go into JB and get this deal added as a new service (and new number) and then port out to a $2 prepaid sim to cancel (and pay the ETC)?
I then plan to also port out of my original plan next month and buy a 12 month expiry (for example the Woolies $150 for 84gb of data).

  • I went to JB after work tonight, and there is a big queue for these - my order got stuck processing so I'm going to have to go back tomorrow to pick it up.

The sales agent told me the deal was discounted further to $89/month for the life of the contract. I don't know why it was even cheaper - but I'm not complaining.

This is at Mt Gravatt in Qld

    • Apparently $89/month offer is only applicable if you are not planning to terminate your plan. Otherwise if you terminate the $10/m credit wont work :(

      • Why would it bother you not to get the $10pm credit if you aren't going to stay with the plan? What would the credit otherwise go towards?

        • +1

          Termination fee will be $99 x 6 months, not $89 x 6 months.

  • Is anyone who preordered the Pixel 4a going to cancel the preorder and get this instead?

Besides build quality, camera and vanilla android is there a reason to spend the $200 more for this?

Genuine question, just tossing up other options and whether this will be better value.

    • +2

      Over Pixel 4a
      Pros
      - Wireless charging
      - Better screen resolution/ display @ up to 120Hz refresh rate
      - Better CPU
      - Dual Sim
      - More ram
      - Better Storage Speed
      - Wifi 6
      - Expandable storage

      Cons
      - May not get the latest androids OS updates 3 years down the road
      - Gcam software takes better photos

      For more detail, check out

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10123&idPhone…

In a nutshell, its a different league to compare, S20 were meant to go against top range phones. Pixel 4a is a budget phone range.

      • Thanks for this. Yeah I understand it's not comparing apples to apples cause they're in two different classes. I guess coming from a Mi 9T (after being an iPhone X user)and not being happy with the camera on the Mi 9T and missing the size of the iPhone X, the 4a seems like a nice middle ground as far as OS updates, screen and camera are concerned.

Perhaps the s20+ will be too big for what I'm after despite the price being only a couple hundred more. There's a little bit of FOMO I think for me at the moment with this deal.

        • Just a tip, if you aren't happy with the Mi 9T camera, try installing the Google Camera app. It improves the quality quite dramatically imo.

Use the latest Urnyx Gcam, found here

Use the Megacam XML configuration file, found here under Mi 9T

Applying the XML config file is explained here.

          Hope that helps!

I was struggling with this - as I loved my Pixel 3a for its clean experience and amazing camera (I killed the screen)

I wanted to wait for a 4a, but was getting so frustrated on a spare phone - I cracked and bought this deal.

My impressions - the bixby bloat is still there, but it's much more hidden if you don't want it. 120hz is amazing. The cameras are very nearly as good as the Pixel (but the pixel still wins). Battery life is great. Samsung UI is fine - again, the samsung bloat is waaaayyyyy down on the old S8 I was using.

I'm happy with the deal. I don't regret not waiting for the Pixel 4a

  • So unsure if others have experienced this. But I cancelled the plan immediately and the guy in Telstra chat (this was via the app) said I have no ETC fees to pay when I asked. I said that this wasn't correct and he said he "doubly checked" and I had no ETC fee to pay. Wondering if it's possible that he's correct with this.

Anyone from previous deals not paid their ETC?

    • that would be awesome. So you are basically getting the phone for $200 WOW

Yes, others in this thread have mentioned that they have not received their ETC bill from previous deals

      • Is there a chance it would come up later?

        • the only way to find out is to get the phone on this deal first.

    • Out of curiosity, did you port over or get new number? Also, how did you cancel? Through the link or call up? Thanks.

      • +2

I am with Boost and when I told them that they straight away gave me a new number which I cancelled 30 minutes later through the my tesltra app. I have written evidence from the person who cancelled my deal that there is no ETC to be expected which I actually responded with "that's not correct" which they responded as I listed above. Total process probably took 30 minutes in jbhifi and another 30m to cancel!

Possibly got the phone for $199 which would be insane if true

        • Thanks! That's really good! Enjoy the phone!

        • Must be the nicest bargain haha. Fingers crossed!

        • I think you just got lucky with this.

I am really tempted to do it now and not go for the Note 20 Ultra offer

but knowing my luck, I would get hit with the ETC which is still not bad considering the phone still costs over $800 to buy from anywhere.

  • Cancelled my plan, but I wasnt so lucky with no etc fee:
Your service will be disconnected within 24-48 hours. You will be receiving your final bill for this service after 1 or 2 billing cycles as the changes are made in the middle of your billing cycle. Please be advised as well that there will be pro-rated charges and credit on your bill. Here's the disconnection reference number - 1-…….

Please let us know on how Telstra can help you further, we'll make sure to give our best to help you with your account. For more self-service option, you can download our amazing My Telstra App via Apple or Google Play store or visit our website at Telstra.com.au.

For the meantime, does this resolve your enquiry for today?

    • This was my exact interaction:

Operator: “The disconnection order has been initiated and should be completed in 24hrs maximum. This is your reference number for today 1-… Will there be anything else I can help you with today?”

Me: “When will I receive the ETC fee and will it be directed to my email?”

Operator: “As per order estimate there is no charge for disconnection of the service since there is no contract with it”

      Me: “No that’s not correct”

      Operator: “What do you mean?”

Me: “So I won’t pay an early termination charge?”

Operator: “Yes you won't. All plan service has contract with telstra. I double it in our system as well.”

      • how did you talk to live chat? It's not available for me

        • Are you using the app? Someone posted a link in this thread that can be used

      • Did you receive an email from Telstra containing details of your new plan? It will show you the plan and contractual period.

Going by the last reply from the operator: "all plan service has a contract with Telstra…" I'd be expecting an ETC with this cancellation….

        • Yes I recieved that. The wording of what he wrote was hard to understand which is why I'm not so sure I won't pay anything but he specifically said "yes you won't, I double it in our system as well". I guess we will wait and see

          • @Shaunzki: "I double it in our system as well"

            read as:

"I have doubt in our system as well"

            haha

            • @CyberMurning: I don't read it as that. Why would he say he has doubt in the system after confidently stating "yes you won't"?

      • I got the same message, I didn't think to question the ETC. Using the get help in my Telstra

        • Fingers crossed we got lucky!

  • Hi brains trust - would this work adding it to a Business account? if so how would i do this? I normally deal with a different Telstra agent, so not sure if JB would have access / visibility of business accounts

  • Did anyone from Metro Melbourne managed to score this? With Level 4 restrictions in force and JB stores closed, was wondering if purchase could be carried out over the phone and item delivered or contactlessly picked up? Please let me know if anyone has had any success relating to this.

    TIA

    • Thats what JBHifi advertised on their webite:

      "Can't go to a store? Expert phone sales on 13 52 44" .

So worth giving them a call.

  • -1

looks like no go for me, ETC applies. 597

  • Do we get full price receipt ?

    • +2

yes you do, as the phone is a seperate outright purchase

  • Anyone else having trouble getting through to chat from the app to cancel?

    • taking ages to cancel, the operator said a few min that was 2 hours ago

  • finally able to cancel my 2 plans after 2 hours of chat. received confirmation.
Poorest possible customer service from Telstra.

    • What reason you guys are using for cancelling. They ask so many question.

      • Finally got through with 5 min wait between each interaction. Told them I'm unhappy with coverage compared to other telcos.

        • Live chat is pretty slow, suspect they are handling couple ppl at the same time.

  • If I take out this plan and make payments for at least 6 months, will I be liable to pay an Etc fee when porting out (i.e. In Feb 2021)?

    • +2

Yep. Half of the remaining value of the contract.
      ($99 * 6) / 2 = $297

  • Ok, just signed up for this one as well.

I've now to cancel my existing telstra business plan for my number (that was on ~$50 p/m out of plan) and try and move that number across to this new plan.

Any help from anybody that has done this specifically is really appreciated.

I have full price receipt, just note that it does have the 1,000 credit with gift cards on there if you are wanting to use this for business claims etc.

Also was interesting that they actually have to give you the voucher (sign up more paperwork) then you take that to the counter to get the price taken off the phone.

This was in JB Chatswood (Westfield). Only had black in stock. Really nice guys there, were also able to help me get a discount on a data plan which you can can straight away and get another $100 off the phone!!!!

    • I was able to move my boost number to telstra by first move the boost number to telstra prepaid, then merging that telstra prepaid into my telstra new contract, replacing the new number with that telstra prepaid number, all done in one go by live chat. Since your number already with telstra, should not be an issue i think

  • Sorry, to expand on the extra $100.. It's to do with getting two services at the same time, you get a further discount.

    • is that correct? so get 2 phone at the same time and get $100 off each or total?
nothing to do with your business plan thingie that you have?

another user dkagg83 seems to bought 2 phones but he didn't mentioned the extra $100 off

      • The guy said when you buy more from them, you get more discounts.
The offer he said to me was buy a new data on plan for $15 p/m (?), then if you don't like, cancel. You'll still get the extra discount.

    • I was not told of any further discount of $100. I asked if anything xtra for 2 phones but she said nothing.

  • Has anyone in Melbourne managed to get around the requirement to sign up in store, and if so, would you mind sharing how to do it?

    • +4

Eagerly following this as well. Sent them an email and awaiting response. Fingers crossed theres a way around it. 😊

      • +1

        Let us know the outcome

        • Unfortunately have had no luck getting a reply from JB. Will update on here if I do.

          • @BargainHuntahh: I spoke to my local store in Springvale home maker - They are working on a new process for us unfortunate enough to be in stage 4 lockdown.

She told me to call back on Monday for an update

            • @snks2k: Noice! However, we still haven't crossed the bridge yet. I'd be concerned about the Monday update considering the deal ends a day prior??

I'll maybe try getting in touch with them again tomorrow, perhaps they will have a change of heart. In the meantime let us know on here if you get any further updates buddy…

              • @BargainHuntahh: I just realised that the offer ends on the 16th… which is tomorrow….. i dont think we will even get the chance to take up this offer.

            • @snks2k: Is Springvale store open during Stage 4?
If they can sign us over the phone, then will be much easier.

              • @jassssone: The store is not open - i think available for just pickup orders, but they cant do anything at the moment over the phone unfortunately….

  • Telstra kept saying something about an error on the link below so I decided to cancel the plan through the MyTelstra app. https://www.my.telstra.com.au/myaccount/contract-details

Was really simple and the contract canceled within the hour. Don't give them any information outside of what's required. If they ask you if there is any particular reason why you're canceling give them a short, sweet 'no'.

  • I went to sign up for this deal, went through the sign up process … signed the contract and every thing. Number was successfully ported by telstra and sim card issued.

When it came to getting the phone, they put my details into another system, which said my account (or profile) was locked. I've previously signed up for some gift card and phone deals at JB hifi … so that could be why.

Anyone know how to get it "unlocked"? The staff were pretty vague about it and didn't provide any details. They ended up cancelling the sim card. I didn't worry about porting the number, since it was a burner sim anyway.

    • Did you get the past gift card offer and cancel the plan? If so, maybe they flagged you.

      • Yes - that's right … but any idea about how to get my account unlocked, so I can buy this deal?

        • I think you are banned for life. But you're better off asking them.

          • @TomGum:

I think you are banned for life.

Perhaps - I'm surprised there aren't other reports of it here.

But you're better off asking them.

            Yeah - I couldn't get a straight answer from them…

      • We are well within our rights to cancel the plan and payoff the ETC. This is in line with the contract terms. Why would they flag or block anyone for cancellation….!
Haven't heard this before, and even if this was the case, the Block should be put in by Telstra not JBHifi. But in this mate's case, his port-in and plan subscription all went smoothly. Must be some other issue.

        • I would be keen to know the real reason too. But I know JB hifi did audits last year where people were able to cancel without any ETCs. So maybe JB hi-fi Flagged those tho did this in their system because they were the ones providing the gift cards. As far as I know if people cancel their plans before JB hifi get their commission, JB hifi probably don't get their commission. Just my 2 cents.

          • @TomGum: Even then its their fault if they were unable to claim their commission from Telstra. Why would a customer be penalised for their slackness. You are well within your rights if you cancel, its JB/Telstra responsibility to charge the ETC.

            • @usmanhafeez2000: I totally agree. But this is only my guess. Tunafish007 would be best placed to question JB.

        • We are well within our rights to cancel the plan and payoff the ETC

You have the right to cancel the plan, but you dont have the right to demand they provide you a service.

          • @Ughhh: Well in that case how can they refuse to sell you something being publicly advertised for sale ? And that too without any valid reason. Thats illegal.

            • @usmanhafeez2000: Does refusing to provide you service due to customer (dodgy history) data, breach any anti-discrimination laws?

            • @usmanhafeez2000: A service provider may refuse to provide a service or a good if they think that the transaction isn't being conducted in good faith.

              https://www.business.gov.au/people/customers/refusing-servic…

              • @whooah1979:

@TomGum But I know JB hifi did audits last year where people were able to cancel without any ETCs

How do you know about the audits?

                • @tunafish007: I read it on whirlpool somewhere last year. I think one of their employees must have mentioned this. Did you call JB and ask for your case?

                  • @TomGum:

I read it on whirlpool somewhere last year

Can you post a link, if you can find it?

Did you call JB and ask for your case?

Not yet … was hoping someone else would post details in this thread.

  • Thanks Op - done deal for S20 plus finally! and I'm located in Melb. Paid $199 then $594 ETC. Telstra online service is not working and had to call up their contact centre.

    • How did you manage to get in melbourne i called few stores and through jbhifi number on website as well but answer was a straight no

      • +2

I've got a good friend in Syd who helped me.

        • +1

Good on you mate! So I assume your friend in Sydney bought it on your behalf in Sydney? If not, then I'd be keen to hear how you pulled it off all while based in Melb 🤔🤔

        • +1

Could you walk us through the steps involved please?

          • @inasero: same normal process, but where we can't be physically, we get can get someone to improvise. i rang up the liverpool store and they confirmed they had like 20 left. friend got the phone for $199 then cancelled the contract immediately. he'll send the phone down tomorrow for me, prob another $20 for p&p.

  • +3

    For anyone who's interested…

A mate just went and signed up for one of these as a new contract with a new number.

But instead of cancelling the contract he rang Telstra. They agreed to cancel the $45 plan he's currently on, transferred his existing number to the new plan ( $89 after the $10 discount) and cancelled the new number.

    • What is the $10 discount for?

      • $10/month port in credit

      • +1

No idea but it's official and legit, everybody who take $99 plan another get $10 off

        No complaints

        • Awesome! Thanks

          • @bluepop: Did he ring Telstra on 13 22 00?
I've been trying but have not been able to get through (I just get an automated response and an SMS to go via the Telstra app)

            • @gooner15: Not sure. Only going by what he told me and I didn't ask.

  • Guys. No need to try and chat. Download the Telstra App. Go to get help then tap the message icon and start a chat. Send a message and wait till you get a reply. It literally took me 2 minutes. You also get a number and link to check the progress.

Looking at the mobile number, I can see that the contract will expire on 13/08/2021, once we disconnect the service you will be charge $592.40 lumpsum on the bext bill.

    Should we proceed?

  • Hey guys, I'm at JB with my partner getting this deal now and the salesman added that if we cancel the plan early we would have to pay the $1000.00 gift card back??? I have not seen that mentioned in this entire thread, is he just trying to scare us?

    • Show them the terms for this plan. Max ETC is $594 not $1,000.

      • Yeah, think it was just a scare tactic. When I asked him to show me the T&C's for that, he had to ask his manager. Manager said it wasn't in writing anywhere. So basically, they have nothing to enforce this apparent condition on me. I just told him that's fine and to continue the contract.

    • +2

Show them your ozbargain badge 😀

    • +1

Yes the salesman is just fear mongering so they get their commission. Once you leave the store you have nothing to do with JB anymore, it's all with Telstra after that and all you are required to pay is the ETC if you cancel.

    • It’s $199 outright, so I’m not sure where the terms says you need to return $1000 gc.
