Still overpriced. from memory Canon 35/f1.8 Macro R was priced at $450 last year.

    • +9

perhaps you think it is overpriced. However I have to point out that that canon lens does not mount on a Sony E camera.

    • It was down to $350. Brought one and still waiting R5 deal.

  • -1

    It's still a 2.8. Too slow

    • +2

On a good FF camera (A7/R range) F2.8 is plenty for almost anything except complete darkness. Yes you will get better bokeh from a F1.4 lens, but will get better from medium format too, you have to draw the line on weight somewhere. An A7R4 with a SEL35F28Z lens is a crazy good compact ultralight combo for travel photography.

      • Would you rather not the 35mm f1.8?

      • I agree, when f2.8 premium lenses on m43 and aps-c are praised and are popular. or FF 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8 combo. Why would a good quality FF 35mm f2.8 prime with great reviews that is light weight and compact coupled on a mirrorless suddenly not be "enough"

        • +1

Because pro zooms - the 2.8 compromise is justified. I have the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and love it, for convenience it can't be beat.
For a $500+ prime I don't think it makes sense. Sure it's lighter and smaller and it's up to each person - but when a Sigma f/1.4 is only a few hundred dollars more, doesn't quite make sense to me

          • @cyrax83: isn't that the dslr version. Wouldn't there be focusing issues compared to the sony. Which is one of the main reasons to get an A7xxx to begin with.

            • @stickymoo: No focusing issues.

The Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 is native
The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 has the adaptor built into the lens, no focus issues works just as well.

    • i'm new to photography, f/2.8 describes the size of the aperture, why do people say fast/slow as opposed to big/small?

      • For given ISO, 'bigger' speture allows higher shutter speed. That is the reason why it is faster.

  • +1

nice price for this lens. it is nice and compact and sharp. f2.8 is actually fast enough for 80% of purpose (taking photos)

The best feature is really the size and the weight and sharpness
I would buy it for this price if I had spare cash even if 35mm is not something I use often.

  • +1

    That's a great price.

  • Is the 85mm 1.8 for $764.15 a good price?

    • +1

I paid 770 last year or so with uv filter so 764 is a good price. My fave lens under 1K. it has AF button for eye detect on lens body too. Get it!

      • How do you rate the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 E mount Af lens?
I have seen some reviews on youtube, which look very promising for $500 lens.

        • Sorry i was referring to sony 85. Dunno abt vitrox

    • +1

Yes. It is half the price of the Zeiss Batis, but quality is really good…. perfect portrait lens for full frame, plus it has a "Circular 9-brade aperture" according to the description (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/sony-sel85f18-fe-85mm-f-1…)

  • +1

Had this Lens for years, very sharp and light weight, good bokeh. this price is good since I bought it second hand for $450.

  • -1

My Offer from AMEX was expired on 01/09, otherwise I can get this one for only $459 from SONY.

  • Yes owned this… too slow….

It didn't add anything to my kit, I had 28-75mm f2.8, 55mm f1.8 and 35mm f2.8. I never used the 35mm f2.8 was really no point, preferred the 55mm if I needed a "lightweight lens". Might have to go the 35mm f1.8 soon.

    • I'm thinking the 35mm T* 2.8 ZA for every day carry, location shoots and video. It has a nice image render, as well as light, compact etc.
Paired with the 85mm 1.8 FE for portrait. I'd be worried the 55mm 1.8 would be too narrow for everyday to capture location/ background and for the purpose of video.

      • +1

Might be personal preference, some people use 35mm for travel/street and some 50/55mm. I also love bokeh and the 35mm 2.8 essentially doubled up on my zoom tamron. When I did want to travel light I chose the 55mm.

        • The 55mm is probably a really good compromise for one lens that can attempt a lot all the way to portrait. 28-75mm f2.8 is the other I am interested in. Then the 85mm f1.8 just seems like a no brainer.

  • +2

An A7R3/4 with a SEL35F28Z lens is a crazy good compact ultralight combo for travel photography. It is around 800g for a full frame camera body with a lens wide, enough for most shots, portraits or landscape with enough reach with cropping for zoom.

    • Lovely images. I've been shooting professionally only a year or two but still yet to own a 35mm lens :o

  • +1

If it's not your thing then it's not your thing. Personally I love this lens. It's compact and sharp with good colour rendition.
F2.8 is fast enough with IBIS and I can get extra reach by switching to APS-C mode although I'm more likely to crop zoom in post instead.

  • +1

i have this lens. as a compact, sharp 35mm this is more than enough. Think of it as Toyota GT86 - sometimes less is more.

    • Turbo would take it to f1.8

  • +1

a lens I would advise against in the range is the 24-70mm f4. It is a rather average lens for the price.

    • As a rapper once said "F4…. say no more"

      • but the 24-105mm f4 is a good lens.

you are letting the Fs get to you. as with most f in life, not all fs are the same

        • I'm struggling to decide whether I got the Sonmy 24-105 or get the Sigma 24-70 2.8. I just got the A7III and my 18-135mm and Sigma 35mm 1.4 where my go to 2 lenses on my crop body. Now I'm just shooting with the 35mm. I do have a 70-200 f/4 it's just abit bulky for carting to the park if I'm trying to get shots with the little one!

          • @BenMHarvey: Probably the Tamron if you are already concerned about the weight and size of lens.

          • @BenMHarvey: neither 24-105 nor the 24-70 are light weight. I have used both sigma versions with a metabone adapter on an A7.

My preference is towards the 24-105 for the little extra zoom

  • Has anyone successfully got a price match through digidirect? I've web chat, emailed and called.

Supposedly I just have to wait for them to get to my ticket. A lot harder/ slower process than Sony.

Meanwhile 36 hrs later. Still no response and the 35mm has been pulled from jb hi-fi website.
I wonder if they just don't respond in time for items they Don't want to price match/ Not in stock/ too cheap etc

It just seems like an antiquated process. To wait for webchat and then they just can't check the link and approve the price match and same with over the phone.
