  • Is there a Ryzen equivalent to i9?

    And why is Ryzen laptop version released before the desktop version?

    • 8 Cores 16 Threads - Ryzen 7?

    • The Ryzen 7 3700X would be the closest thing, both are 8C16T parts, though I can't find any benchmarks of the i9-9900 non-K so I can't make any comparisons.

      • Passmark PerformanceTest i9-9900 scores 17,350, 3700X scores 22,784

          Depends on use case though, it's possible the i9-9900 will win in gaming, but I think the difference will be so minor you're better off with the R7-3700X unless you've got a B360/B365/Z370/Z390 board.

            @Void: The i9 definitely wins in gaming and single-threading. But don't trust the TDP… 65W ROFL even without unlocking (K) that's a joke. I wouldn't trust the stock cooler.

            All round (esp if you get a B550 or X570 mobo and hence have upgrade path to next Ryzen generation) 3700x is likelier the better buy for most.

          • @Void: Agreed. If it's a new build I think AMD are more deserving of your money at this point

      zen = desktop 1xxx / 2xxxG / mobile 2xxx
      zen+ = desktop 1xxxAF / 2xxx / 3xxxG / mobile 3xxx
      zen2 = desktop 3xxx / 4xxxG / mobile 4xxx
      zen3 = desktop 4xxx / 5xxxG / mobile 5xxx

  • And why is Ryzen laptop version released before the desktop version?

    Where did you get this from? Currently they're both ryzen 2 architecture

    • +1

      It's just the naming that's insanely misleading. Desktop 3000 = laptop 4000. What on earth AMD??

      • -1

        I think they're skipping Ryzen 4000 desktop for Ryzen 5000 so that they can fix the names. Holy (profanity) the Ryzen 5 5600 and Ryzen 7 5700 are gonna be so weird with the Radeon GPUs having the same name.

    • Yeh what Incipient said, I thought laptop ryzen 4xxx series is newer than the desktop 3xxx series, but I know now its not.

  • Is this much improvement from a 8700k? Currently using a z370 board.

    • +1

      Unless you have a need for the extra 2c/4t then no.
      Now if it was the 9900k for this price, i'd jump on that.

      • Not sure how I can get rid of 8700K otherwise I will get it. Planning to wait for Ryzen 4000 and remove stupid Intel.

        • +1

          Sell it on Ebay, always big demand for i7.

        • What's an old 8700 worth?

  • Just bought a 10700 which is faster than 9900 and slightly cheaper. Also grabbed a copy of marvel avengers as there’s intel promotion.
