    Same price as JB.

Hmmm SE at $429 or Series 5 at $479?

    • +1

Have a look at some previous posts, thoughts here and here

I personally went with the SE. But it’s up to you.

    • +8

Series 5 for me for the always on and the ECG… when the software is finally switch on.

      • +5

Don't hold your breath for the ECG. No signs it is coming anytime soon, and no promises that Apple would bother having the Series 4 and 5 approved when they're no longer sold by Apple.

        • If this is the case… then SE-4G is the one to go for…

        • Agree that there’re no plans on it coming anytime soon, but if and when they do get approval for the series 6 it’ll come to the series 5 automatically even if no longer sold.

          • +2

@neilpatrickharris: NPH, I’m a big fan of your work. But I read somewhere that Apple haven’t even applied for ECG approval in AU’s TGA. I’m going to guess because they know it wouldn’t be approved, so don’t apply.

            • @muncan: Yup, I read the same article which is why I agree it’s not coming anytime soon. Was just pointing out that when it does arrive, wouldn’t make sense to specifically exclude a series 5 when it is capable of that feature.

              • @neilpatrickharris: It might not make sense, but it could make cents…
                My advice, forget ECG.

            • +1

@muncan: He’ll always be Barney in my mind

          • @neilpatrickharris: The feature, if approved for the Series 6 won't mean it'll come to Series 4 or 5. They are different devices and would need to be approved as well, in addition to the Series 6.

      • I went with the series 5 for the same reasons.

I didn’t think I’d like the always on display, now that I have it I’m glad I went with the 5 over the SE.

    • +3

Series 5 . Always on display

  • these or second hand but stainless steel? never had aluminium before, just worried about getting scratched easily…

      • Thanks, did not realise different glasses have different reflections… my question more toward the watch body, being aluminum are softer than stainless steel… sorry for not being super clear… another obvious thing is stainless steel weights tons more… :x

        • Maybe too late, here is Youtube video doing scratch test on aluminium and stainless steel Apple Watch.

  • Series 5 at that price seems reasonable given the nominal gains of the series 6

Series 3 is still a very good watch. Great value.

  • Managed to get one Apple Watch Series 3 - 42mm at ebay plus sale for $229 , i am reconsidering if i should get Series 4 for its bigger screensize

    • I bought too one but then requested to cancel the order as looking for deals on series 5

  • +3

Just so you know the Series 3 doesn’t get many of the new features of watchOS 7 eg watches faces, hand washing etc.

It gets security updates which are good but none of the fun stuff.

As a Series 3 owner of the past few years that’s kinda disappointing but sort of expected.

Still a damn fine smart watch though.

  • Ive heard of you buy this with AppleCare and if you break the screen , they replace it rather than repair it with their most recent model if this model is OOS

    • The chances of the store (or even the service centre) having no stock are very very slim. They have a LOT of replacement models out the back.

Although in saying that, if you get 3 repairs and become a looper you'll get a new replacement rather than a refurb and if it's a no longer sold model (eg. S5) then you'll get an upgrade.

      • I have a series 4 model with AppleCare expiring feb 2021. Currently has a scratch on the glass. Will request a service in jan 21. Doubt they have the s4 SS model by then

        • +3

Don't be so sure. I just had my S3 Hermes replaced, which they havent sold since the S4 launch and I still got a S3 Hermes replacement.

          • @BillyG687: damn lol. i was getting hyped from all the past reddit posts about free upgrades. i guess its all luck

        • They will. Trust me. There are more refurbished devices of every model there then you can imagine.

I hope for your benefit though you strike luck.

  • So down to get an apple watch series 6, only if they supported android or even an ipad. Can't stand limitations of iphone due my needs.

  • After having some of the previous versions over the years , it's worth getting the 5 , just for the always on display

  • What do you miss if you buy the series 3 38mm for $269 compared to the series 4 or series 5 besides the screen size and always on display? It looks like much more value for money than those 2 if a smaller screen is okay with you.

  • Is apple care+ worth it for the apple watch considering it costs $99 service fee each time for repairs/replacements

    • If you are planning to use your Watch for 2 years and more, I would recommend it given that you could probably get your Watch’s battery serviced just before your Apple Care plus runs out. Watches are also more subject to damage so that’s another reason.

      • +4

I just had my mums S3 watch replaced free of charge with another S3. I did buy it from a apple store direct, which I have done so for most of my apple gear, which went in my favour. I never bought the apple care warranty and the watch was over 1.5 years old. The battery would no longer retain more then 6 hrs charge on it. The whole watch got replaced for free, due to Australian Competition Laws, as the product was not fit for purpose. Aka apple state the watch battery should last 1000 cycles and this one did less then 500. Apple have a blurb on their site about ACC. Basically if you break it you pay for it, but if its not fit for purpose then they need to replace it or fix it under warranty due to Australian law not their own warranty rules.

  • Apple 3 or Fitbit Versa 2?
Use it as a smart watch than fitness kit.

    • Apple watch s3 for sure

    • Versa 2 has very poor smart watch features so I wouldn't even consider it a smart watch. I'd go with the Apple Watch if you're using an iPhone.

      • I am not an iphone user. Android all the way, but I might just buy the Apple watch 3
        Thanks for the suggestions

        • How will you set it up?

          • @TheJoker: doesn't S3 have Bluetooth? If not, I have to reconsider!

            • @imeanit: Yes, it does. Bluetooth 4.2.

              • @O O: Apologies, I thought you needed an iPhone to do the initial setup

  • Would a series 3 be a decent fitness watch?

    • Yes, why not?

      • Just asking compared to a similar priced Garmin or Fitbit etc. I’ve got a nice Swiss watch so would wear the Apple Watch only for fitness

        • +1

It’s smart watch first then anything else. If you are a hardcore fitness person, go for the Garmin. Otherwise, Apple Watch works pretty well. I bought the SE Nike version and thus far I am loving it.

        • Apple watch is far more versatile than any fitness watch out there.

          • +2

@mrau: except my garmin goes 7 days between charges and that is with 24 hr HR monitoring and always on clock face…..presume apple watch needs to be charged more often.

            • @garage sale: Possibly daily recharging. Still more versatile and future proof. I personally still often use my old Nike TomTom to record run parameters, but Apple watch does that (also with a Nike app) and a lot more.

        • +1

Well, it is probably a best general use smart watch, but thus misses a few thing s compared with a specialised device targeting a niche.

The consensus seems to be if using fitness monitor for running only etc Garmin the go, if you want a smart watch Apple Watch.

Series 6 is only $650 on Apple website

  • Is Series 3 worth it in 2020?

  • Ahh! thank you for the reminder, just submitted price protection for series 5! wrapped!!

    • What does "submitted price protection" mean?

      • +2

He bought at a higher price recently and now will ask his credit card company to refund the difference.

        • Thanks

  • Series 3 gone back to normal price…
