    • It’s even worse to waste them and let them spoil.

If you buy other eggs from a supermarket you are exactly the same. Just because someones marketing team twisted terms and words around doesn't mean the chickens had a better life. If you seriously care about the chickens go and buy your eggs where you can see how the chickens live.

Most free range eggs are accredited thesedays

        • +1

          https://ramsdenlaw.com.au/news/fake-free-range-egg-producers…

And there are hundreds of such cases that have been discovered. Don't even want to know how many are unknown still

          • +3

@dosada: They were Not accredited, thats my point.

At the same time, the decision defends those businesses who have made legitimate and costly efforts to reorganise their business models to earn the right to claim in its marketing a particular accreditation or description (such as “free range”).

Bird flu outbreaks are mostly from REAL free range. Hens are are all killed after that. Is that better than just taken their eggs and keep living?

          • +3

            @Jamesx: Rubbish

  • +9

Why do businesses still even stock these?

    • +3

Choice. It's a great thing to have. I can pee on the lemon tree or in the toilet. Totally up to me.

      • +1

Is it though? They are clearly not selling many by the looks of this image?
I often see Woolies always reducing to clear them as well…

I often see Woolies always reducing to clear them as well…

          I don't

        • +1

I never see a woollies clear out eggs. And the cheap eggs are the ones that need to get refilled all the time that I have noticed.

      • I prefer the tree

      • +2

@RSmith The similarity is? Inhumane treatment of animals ought not to be a choice - ever.

        • -2

          Time to go vegan then.

          • -1

@RSmith: Or go live in a cave? Seems like you've yet to work out why peeing into a gale isn't the same as peeing on a tree.

  • -6

    Better to be a vegan

    • +2

Not pay to have day old male chicks shredded to death? What do you think - that there are alternatives that we could eat? Recommending such things is just militant and extreme. No wonder everyone hates vegans.

  • +2

Fake pictures of happy farm chickens on packets lol?

  • +6

People can hate on the logic of this literally being animal cruelty. Honestly can't understand how we still have cage eggs in this country with our regulations.

    • -1

maybe chicken feels safe in the cage than stay on the field.

      • But you don't? Go figure.

  • +1

Our legal regulations allow it, farmers get exemptions allowing otherwise cruel practices via the voluntary codes of practice sham regulations. Governments have been mostly useless and in pockets of the wealthy for generations. Vote with your wallet and ethical lifestyle.

    • I'd vote with my believe if I can, not my wallet

  • I prefer free-range caged eggs

    • The chooks are caged straight after they have laid eggs?

      • +1

No, just the eggs are placed in cages

  • i go the 1500 hens per hectare free range.. vs the 10000 hens per hectare at the supermarket.. gotta give the chooks some love

    • gotta give the chooks some love

Eat them at least twice a week.

  • Last week I found some pastured eggs from spudshed for the first time. I have to use my phone to check what exactly does it mean to be a pastured one and now I know those 'normal' free range eggs are not what I thought them to be. I wonder if there are any even finer/higher category of eggs.

    • Yes there are. Have a look at Facebook marketplace. Plenty of farmers which let you collect from them where you can see how the hehns are

      • Did they come up with a name for their eggs?

    • +3

      finer/higher category of eggs

      Yes. Cadbury Creme Eggs

      • They are ineligible to be in the competition. The machines produced those eggs have never walked outside for even 1 day.

Good old WA, where a family pet cannot have a litter of puppies legally, but hundreds of thousands of hens can spend their entire lives caged in a space too small to turn around.

    • well till we bury the nuclear waste our water tables though diminishing fast, are likely to remain vaguely drinkable, unlike the ones in NSW.

  • +3

Personally, I rather pay a little more for the free range eggs, but I can see why people with limited food budget will choose to buy this over the more expensive eggs.

  • +1

    here we go again

    • yep personal choice - can see why the rich have bought bottling plants though…

  • -4

Its like a few cents more to buy cage free you goddam seagulls

  • +1

Im against cage eggs I think its unnecessary, however, for people that live under the poverty line I dont believe they should be forced to pay more when not required. This is a good cheap deal that many people will enjoy. Let's not force your believes on everybody in the community, it's very self righteous.

Tell us how you really feel

    • -1

I suspect that's a total furphy but if you have convincing evidence that an extra dollar a week for barn/free range eggs would significantly effect less well off people by all means provide it. The old "every bit helps" won't wash because there are plenty of options governments have to offset that small impost - eg rein in rampant energy and housing costs. Many below the poverty line already get food handouts - including perishables - from charities, and assistance from govt. Govts banning caged egg production would have sfa effect overall.

OK lets cage everything up and make all Earth's inhabitants suffer so economically challenged people can afford to consume them.
I think soylent green would be a better choice if they're that poor and determined to eat animal protein.

  • I will not ask you to not buy these but humbly ask you to remember how it feels to be forced to stay at home each day over days/week at a time, not allowed out to exercise and run around with your friends.

    Harsh times recently, right?

Now imagine you were one of those chickens who are in a small cage for all their live. Birth to death.

Hope it makes sense to some now. All the best.

You only have to read the comments on here and you will clearly understand where society has gone so wrong lol. FMD!

    • What, you want to tell me the society was right before?

  • Find an egg producer who has suffered through a disastrous year due to to bushfires, COVID or a shortened football season and support them. Kangaroo Island Eggs, Blue Mountain Free Range etc.
Try buying from a small local store such as butcher, independent supermarket or green grocer. You should find that with just a friendly attitude you can ascertain when they have deliveries, usually direct from farm or through 1 small distributor giving you fresher eggs.
At the very least make sure you are buying Australian owned eggs

  • still can't believe people are ok with buying these
