        • on most eSIM phones, you can use it + physical SIM in dual SIM mode, just like any other dual SIM phone. Telstra, Voda, and Optus all offer mobile eSIM swaps to some degree.

          • +1

@BigBoy47: For the longest time, Telstra's eSIM system was useless. You have to go in-store and get a printed QR code for your phone to scan. If your phone dies, and you just bought a new one, you have go to a store to get another printed QR code. If you reset your phone and didn't make sure the eSIM is backed up (it should ask you), you once again have to go to a store to get another QR code. eSIMs are digital and can be delivered digitally, but you still had to go to a store to get a physical printed card.

But since last month, you can manage your eSIM with the My Telstra app. I haven't tried it myself, but that would make eSIMs actually useful. Better make sure your telstra password is secure and unique though! I don't see a 2FA option, and you can't receive an SMS before you've set up your eSIM, so security will be interesting.

            • @eug: I'm on Telstra, but I haven't personally tried the eSIM since, for some reason, the AU Pixel 3 has its eSIM disabled in firmware…

I did hear about the streamlined swap process, though, and I'm glad it's there. Voda also lets you manage your eSIM online; not sure about Optus.

              • @BigBoy47: Optus sim can be managed via the app. Much more convenient and no need to go inshore.

I'm so confused. My gf wants a pixel because she sees my Pixel 2 XL . I actually don't know what advice to give her.

    • -8

Don't you hate it when your GF wants a sex change just because you have an 2x extra large one. I would just promise to share it with her unless the pixel would really suit her.

    • +1

      Get her the Pixel then.

    • +5

Give her your 2XL and you get the new 5… done deal

      • +1

Maybe i'll just wait for the Pixel 4 to come down in price. I mean it's friggin more expensive than the 5!

    • prob she wants for the quality of the picture and is still top 3 of the best cameras, go for it :)

  • +3

i really want the pixel 5 XL

    • big enough as it is. I personally don't want want a tablet in my pocket.

    • +2

      I really want a Pixel 5 XS.
Something with a smaller screen like the Nexus 5 and Pixel 1

      • +2

Yeah same, I feel I get used to whatever screen size I have, I would prefer a smaller footprint in my pocket, also easier to hold and type on with one hand. I remember there were some leaks about an XS I think last year, nothing every came of it…

        • +1

I had a Pixel2 and went back to my Pixel1 for the smaller screen.

      • +1

        This.
After I broke my Oneplus 3 I went back to my Nexus 5 and it felt so nice in the hand.
I really wish they make an new Pixel in the same form factor as the Nexus 5. Probably not gonna happen if they want to keep the battery size though.
I now have the Pixel 2 now which has the exact same screen size as the Nexus 5 but is a significantly bigger phone (huge bezels).
And the new Pixels have the same phone size as the Pixel 2 but with the screen reaching all sides. Not sure if I would get used to it.

  • +10

Back in the day, these kind of phones are thrown in free or 5 or 10$ per month extra. Now they give us 10% discount for 24 month contract.

    • Pixel 4 was $99 upfront+12 month Telstra back when it launched if my memory serves right. I'm guessing similar deals are on the way given Samsung galaxy FE is doing something similar.

    • +1

back in the day a $1k phone cost ~$80 per month for what was value at the time for data/calls. The BYO plans at the time for comparable data was $40 a month but the phone plans where $70 and there might have been a bit of a premium price of $10 for example.

The net value to the customer has dramatically increased over the past 10 years IMO i also think the margin on the phone has likely dropped for the network/dealer. Remember when you used to pay for calls? texts? per KB of data?

A pixel 5 on a 24 month voda plan for me was ~$72 per month with 30gig data, unlimited calls, text, free google nest audio speaker. And if i go OS its $5 a day for roaming.

  • +2

Still waiting for a pixel better than the 2xl, sucks that they're ending the support for it and no new pixel supports the unlimited photo uploads in original quality.

  • I was almost ready to move over to a pixel but then checked the hardware specs and thought not this time.
Yes I know its about the software experience etc etc but at the end of the day my 14 month old mate 20 pro still flies along and beats it almost across the board hardware wise.
In a way I'm sort've happy to postpone buying a new phone in these trying times!

    • why do you even need to move on from a 14 month old mate 20 pro? i have a note 8 and cant even justify it other than battery, but even then i haven't hit the point where i just cant stand it…

      • Have an S8 plus. Doesn't handle modern games well. Wanted to play Genshin Impact but runs at 15FPS. Decided just to not play lol.

      • Oh I don't, at all. I have often thought about a pixel and I guess the example only demonstrates how little tech has advanced. The mate 20 pro is actually a 2 year old phone. I do love Huawei hardware, such a shame America hates them :(

        • Kinda came out wrong… it’s just hard to justify even new top specd phones compared to mine which is coming to 3 yrs let alone just over a year… in saying that I’d probably go pixel or Sammy FE if I needed to … :)

  • +9

All of the pixel comments aside. This is such an underwhelming deal, why'd you sign up for a contact over 2-3 years to just save mere 150.

    • plus $55 cashback from cashrewards.
      +double my data
      +5g now
      +optus sport

was using optus anyway around the same price

      i think it's decent

  • +1

Might not benefit all but if you sign up to the google one (prepaid cloud storage) for one month at $12.49 you get a 10% credit back in the form of store credit which can be put towards other products or accessories.

  • Even with student discount this is pretty woeful at current plan costs unless you need 200GB

    • I got the last Pixel with 200GB plan and cancelled my home internet since I live by myself and I can make do with 200GB.

It's actually pretty cost effective and I got a new phone..

  • +6

In my opinion, Google is doing right with what they're offering with the Pixel 5. It's a good mid-ranged phone with vanilla Android. A high end flagship with bleeding edge technology and all the bells and whistles still might not give you a good experience - but you'll certainly pay for it. Why not offer something that more consumers would be willing to pay without having to compromise on the user experience? The phone will most likely still run whatever you throw at it, so what is the real problem?

    • +7

The phone will most likely still run whatever you throw at it, so what is the real problem?

Unfortunately lots of people simply fixate on numbers rather than actual user experience. 8 is bigger than 7 so a phone with a 7 must be inferior in every way. Benchmark numbers become more important than the actual user experience. A hotted-up ricer car is better than a Lexus because it can do 0-100 in 4.5s in a straight line… forget all the other aspects of the car like ride comfort, handling, interior quality, design, features, reliability etc.

      • +1

I actually think it's just a loud minority who are like that. I feel like they're positioning the Pixel to be closer back to what the Nexus was like. Competing on the latest and greatest front was a mistake. Way more people care about affordability and overall experience. Heck, why else was the 3a such a popular phone?

        • +5

I actually think it's just a loud minority who are like that.

True, in The Real World outside of this tech bubble we forum users are in, I'd say the vast majority of phone buyers really, really don't care about SD vs Exynos, Android 9 vs 10 vs 11, SD765 vs 865, and whatever else gets techies jocks in a twist.

Hopefully casual users who browse forums are savvy enough to tell the difference between posters who lean a bit too far towards the extreme numbers-oriented side, and a more balanced real-world-use side.

    • +2

I agree with you. Google have learned their lesson for competing with other flagships, instead they focus on their key strengths which are camera and stock android.

Although I still feel Pixel 5 and 4a 5G a lil bit too expensive, I think $900 and $700 is a good RRP for them.

    • I don't disagree with you, but I also think they could just offer a full lineup of phones that appeals to the whole audience, like Samsung or Apple, rather than releasing 3 phones that are clustered around the mid-range.

I also think people are still unhappy about the inflated cost of phones in recent years, so being told that this $1000 mid-range phone is the "value" option is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. Especially for those of us who are on the great Telstra Pixel 2 XL deal lol.

But who knows, it might get rave reviews and be the best thing since sliced bread.

  • +2

    Stanley Yelnats!

    • He knows!

  • Go oneplus 8 pro instead

  • I believe we should also look at the mobile service that you have to pay in order to reap this discount. The minimum plan is of $39 with Optus and you really need to think about your usage these days knowing that majority of the states have changed the way of working and are encouraging working from home.
The low data alternatives are for as low as $10 from belong if you don’t need much data and add and additional $5 for international calls.

    • The flybuys tariff is $35 for 20gb plus bonus points. Such a shame this is not offered with pixel 5 or I'd be all over it.

  • I've posted the following question in the telstra pixel 5 deal but this deal seems a lot more active. Hoping someone can help. I'm not interested in the 5G plans as I'm not paying a premium to be a guinea pig. I'll wait until its rolled out properly at my home and work areas.

    • I'm already with Telstra on a $39 4G plan.
    • Do I signup for a new number and plan on the $55 4G plan, stay with that new number for a month and cancel?
    • I believe I will be paying $96.62 (phone under 24month plan + one month), get the code for the Max Hub, then cancel and pay out the remainder $957.26 and continue using my existing plan.
  • +3

If you pre order via Telstra, you get the Nest Hub Max which retail value is 349. It costs $55 for the first month sim plan, so 999+50 to get the phone and the hub, you could get the phone for less than 800.

  • Nothing wrong with My 3xl for$588
Hopefully can get a free upgrade again if this One stuffs up, 2y warranty from Google store

    • -4

It'd be a downgrade from a 3 to a 5 except for that ultrawide back camera and 4k60 video.

I don't know wth is going on with Google's mobile phone area that they manage to keep phucking up year after year.

  • I got a s20 Fe 5g plus ear buds for 804 delivered. I traded my s8 for 95 dollars, 200 dollars as trade up bonus, 50 dollars as signing up bonus and will sell the buds for 200 bucks on fleabay which will make the new phone worth 604 dollars.. pretty hard to beat that even when prices fall. This was on samsung website, forgot to mention and the 200 dollar trade up is about to end if anyone is interested in it. This is a known deal been posted on OZB before, I was just waiting to see if pixel 5 impresses me enough to fork out the extra cash , it didnt.

Google will be targeting their software to run flawlessly on this device for years to come. People complained about the 4gb of ram in the Pixel 3 to no end, it was the end of the world! 2 years later it's still running as smooth as butter.

    • What's the point of their software if their hardware doesn't cut it? eg. pixel 2 camera.

      • The camera still bests its competition time and time again. Their computational photography muscle has been a winning strategy so far. Seems they focused on video this time around too.

    • I have the pixel 3 and it does run smooth 98% of the time. Ram is a big problem, as it has to reload apps all the time. Turns the task menu in to an app drawer. Also the battery is abysmal and the worst I've ever experienced in a phone. 3hrs SoT has me needing a charger in the afternoon

      • My Pixel 3 gets 5h+ SoT regularly. But I also never use wireless or fast charging to protect the battery.

        • I also get 5h SOT and use wireless charging every night. I've probably only plugged it in a handful of times over the 2 years.

There is no way I would ever get a phone deal through Optus ever ever EVER again!!!!

Two years ago I got the Pixel 3 on what I considered a "great" deal through Optus. The new phone they sent me didn't work - I could hear the caller but they couldn't hear me. I tried to get it replaced at a physical Optus store but they said because I ordered it online I had to ask for a return mail bag to be sent to me and return it that way. Took ages for bag to arrive, I returned it, and then they said I because I didn't send back the original box, only the phone, they wouldn't even look at it and sent it back. So I ask for another return bag, wait a couple of weeks and then return the phone and all original packaging. A few weeks later the same phone turns up with a note saying there is nothing wrong with the phone! F'ing Bullshit!!! So I take the phone into a store, prove to them it doesn't work and say you deal with it because I am not using the stupid return bag system. I finally get a working phone but it's refurbished - WTF? They say because the phone I returned was over 3 months old their policy is not to replace with a new phone - again WTF! The phone didn't F'ing work from day 1!!! and it was 3 months only because they messed me around no end. Just this week (coincidence?) the refurbished phone stopped working - same problem!! It is now in the bin (in pieces I might add).

Sorry, I try and limited my swearing to only people I know but these guys messed me around no end and I wouldn't want anyone to go through the crap I went through so just be warned. They have lost my wife, my son, and my MIL as customers because of the way they treated me and I so can't wait for my current contract to end so I too can be done with them!!!

    • Have you tried to contact Google directly?

  • +2

Google Pixel design on point this time. No ugly chin or forehead. Huge improvement from the previous pixels.

  • After months of going back and forth between this and the 4a, I finally decided to get the pixel 5 because
    1) the 4a is sold out everywhere and I'm tired of waiting
    2) 5 has the sorta sage colour which I like

The pixel 5 would've been the perfect phone for me if it had the headphone jack too, but it is what it is.

    • +1

No offence, but I genuinely do not understand why people keep making a fuss about the headphone jack in 2020. Bluetooth headphones have become so cheap lately, besides a pair of USB-C earbuds are included in the packaging.

      • +1

Well I do have 2 pairs of Bluetooth headphones but I still prefer wired earphones because they're much lighter and don't need to be charged. Without a earphone jack, I can't charge my phone and use the earphones at the same time.

I have a pixel 2 which doesn't have a earphone jack so I'm used to it. But I do miss it. I only brought it up because the pixel 5 is the only one out of the three phones they released this year that doesn't have it.

  • +1

Signed up to this deal, my Pixel 2XL screen was cracked so good timing for a new phone. Was tossing up between this and the Samsung S20 FE, was really torn between the two. Chose the Pixel mainly because of the camera and I've enjoyed the experience of using the Pixel over my last Samsung (7 Edge).

  • i have the pisel 4 xl from the vodafone deal, i miss the fingerprint reader but see no value in upgrading to pixel 5

  • $144 + $55 back from cashrewards

$199 off in total from $999 plus i get 5G now and double my old data for $9 more per month.

I pulled the trigger upgrading from pixel 2xl

    • I upgraded as well, also used Cashreward.
I also haggled optus live chat to reduce the cost and they've offered $45 credit for porting over from Boost.

      $144 + $55 + $45

  • has any one over here got the screen gap issue? seems to be a prominent issue and a bit scary

  • Would Vodafone lowest plan better. for $2more you get 50GB/mo.
