Pixel 5 $999 (+ Plan Cost) & Get a Free Google Nest Hub Max @ Telstra

390

The cost of the phone is RRP but you get a free Google Next Hub Max if you pre-order.

The Nest Hub Max is currently $349 (JB, Harvey Norman etc) but looks like you will be required to be connected to the Telstra network for at least 1 month as you get a promo code for the Nest Hub Max that you redeem from the google store (cheapest plan is $55 per month but does not include access to Telstra's 5G network).

weird selling a 5g phone without access to 5g from the carrier. or is this an extra payment on top of the plan?

    • +1

more like crowd funding without delivering to consumers, new way of rippooo :) - charging customers with 5G "promising rolling out" while most of them are getting nah nah

    • +7

Telstra do offer 5g plans with the P5. OP mentioned the $55 4g plan because it is telstra's cheapest plan that can be bundled with the pixel 5. And if your intention is to cancel said plan after the first month, pay out the phone and essentially sell the nest hub. You gain the pixel 5 for $200 or so less than RRP. Then go prepaid or upgrade to a 5g plan.

      • ah! thanks. was a little confused there.

  • Do you keep the phone if you disconnect after a month?

    • As long as you pay out the rest of the plan, I don't see why you can't

    • yes, can someone please confirm?

      • +2

You can cancel the plan after 1 month and just pay out the phone. As in their contract terms on new plans.

    • +1

Yes - you just pay out the remainder of the phone.

(You can opt for 12/24/36 month repayments, but obviously won’t matter as without a phone plan attached you have to pay the lump sum)

  • The last few Hub Max's sold for about $270 shipped on eBay.

    ~$210 after fees.

So about 20% off for the phone.

  • $999 is the regular outright price. But to get the free hub, you need to activate via Telstra.

  • +2

it is much better when you sign on those $500-700 (or even $800) bonus gift card Telstra deal from JBHiFi then buy and still save way over "FREE" gift from Telstra :)

    • Waiting on that deal. I'm betting we'll see something like that closer to xmas.

    • +1

Only if you want to keep the plan. Otherwise the telstra deal is better as you can cancel after a month.

  • Pretty decent offer if you were thinking of getting a Home Max, or you could offload it and get the Pixel 5 for similar money to the 4a 5G

  • so you pay full price but the cost of a plan just to get a free google hub max, sounds overpriced
    Where is the deal?

    • As per comments above, if you sell the Hub Max, it's effectively 20% off

      • -2

who is going to buy it for $349 second hand?

        • +3

You don't need to sell it for $349…Only need to make $200 on it for 20% off. The phone is only $999. If you sell it for $250 it's 25% off

        • +2

If its not opened (i.e. sealed plastic), why would it be considered second hand?

  • i wonder if it does wireless fast charging on any device or do u need to use their pixel stand to do fast wireless charging

  • Anyone know if Telstra still load bloatware onto their android phones? Or is that a thing of the past?

    • Thing of the past and they are not carrier locked any more

  • Does this phone come unlocked? If you cancel the plan after say a month you can use it on say the Optus network?

    • Yes , it will be unlocked and you can use it on optus

  • -1

Anyone know if Telstra still load bloatware onto their android phones? Or is that a thing of the past?

    • +1

My Pixel 2 from Telstra had minimal bloat as far as I can recall. Like 3 Telstra apps in total

      • Weird; I also had a Pixel 2 from Telstra and there was nothing Telstra on it.

        • I've heard you can uninstall the Telstra pre-installed apps. Didn't know if Telstra insert like a Telstra logo on startup or what not.

        • Yeah it was a while ago so it could be that my memory is faulty. I might have installed them myself (Telstra 24/7 is the only one I recall)

  • Couldn't you do the above deal on a plan and then get this bonus and the port bonus going on currently at certain stores like jb?

    • I don't think it works like that. But hey, try and let us know?

  • What if I'm already having a Telstra 5G prepaid plan ($65)?

    • +1

when you choose your phone and plan ($65) and press continue, you should receive the option to upgrade existing plan.

  • +4

Really hoping there'll be someone that gets close to offering what other countries are - apparently the UK are offering free Bose headphones with some deals…

  • Do you get to keep the hub max if you cancel the plan?

    • Yep

  • -1

So tempted to get this.. sure that this won't be locked just to Telstra?

Just to confirm, I'm already with Telstra on a $39 4G plan.

Do I signup for a new number and plan on the $55 4G plan, stay with that new number for a month and cancel?

I believe I will be paying $96.62 (phone under 24month plan + one month), get the code for the Max Hub, then cancel and pay out the remainder $957.26 and continue using my existing plan.

    • Was wondering exactly the same…

      Anyone able to confirm?

      • I just pulled the trigger and preordered it with a new service + physical sim. This way I can continue using my current number in the phone and once I get the Google Hub Max voucher code (which is 3 days after activation according to the T&Cs), cancel the month to month plan and payout the remaining phone balance and continue using my $39 plan. I know I won't get 5G but I'm not going to pay a premium to be a tester. Once they rollout 5G everywhere I will consider upgrading my current plan.

        • Hey mate,

So did you get your code 3 days later?
          Was cancellation straight forward?

          Thanks

        • Did this all work out?

          • @Uncle Roger: Got the phone on launch day, same day new service was activated. Next day I received an email with the max hub code. I redeemed it in the google store. Then messaged/chatted to Telstra and cancelled the service. Next bill I will have to pay out the handset. There seems to be an Outright option now which would have been so much easier. good luck

            • @Sergeant Salami:

There seems to be an Outright option now which would have been so much easier.

I don't think that the outright option include the max hub

              • @snvl: Ah my bad, I just re-read the T&Cs. You have to activate a new service to get the hub max so the outright option won't work. What a huge pain in the ass!

            • @Sergeant Salami: I still have not received my code. I contacted Telstra customer care and they have no clue what is going on and what to do to resolve this problem. Ahhhh, what should I do?

              • @nosrad: Email came from [email protected] saying that my purchase was eligible for it and the code/instructions on how to redeem from the Google Store. Did you activate a new service when you preordered the Pixel 5?

                • @Sergeant Salami: Yes, new service with Pixel 5. Received on launch date and activated it straight away. Didn’t receive any email

            • @Sergeant Salami: Thanks for the reply mate. Glad things worked out for you :)

Still tossing up whether to go for the p5.

How's your experience been so far?

  • Gonna upgrade to pixel 5 from pixel 2 and this is best deal for me, was confused between vodafones best audio and telstras deal
have never ordered a phone on a plan so a Noob Q:
Who will honor warranty when I cancel the plan and terminate the contract?
Afaik, Google should still be responsible for 2 years? I ask coz I've seen ppl complaining that their provider doesn't help them when they try to seek help about their device from thier providers

    • You go through Telstra if you buy from them

      • Even after cancelling the contract we would be stuck with them?

        • As far as I'm aware. When I bought my Nexus 6P outright from Optus, Google directed me to go to them for warranty fix (bootloop).

          • @chartparker: Thanks mate. That sucks though. I don't wanna be shafted later. Don't know how their service is especially if contract is cancelled. Might be better off paying higher price or wait for November deals

            • +1

@godspeed4476: It's really interesting Google Support has been. Really good for me, I had a Nexus 6P bootloop and I had to go through the carrier but all Pixels since then have been purchased from various online and in store but Google have still set up any returns directly and the support has been really good. 24/7 phone support and free returns. Including option of auth hold for a straight swap by courier which I thought was pretty neat. Reminded me of old Palm days.

              • @velociraptor: That's good info mate. I have read it in many places that the carriers are quite stingy when it comes to providing new phones for replacement under warranty, especially if it has been a few months.
Eventhough I do like Hub Max, I'd rather wait and see if a decent deal around black friday and the Telstra deal runs till then in any case

              • @velociraptor: Interesting… I tried going through Google to fix my pixel 2 charging port but they insisted I go through Telstra. Oh well

  • Any pre order being shipped for 15 Oct delivery?

    • +1

I got a shipping notification from Auspost (Startrack). Not sure if it's the phone or SIM Card only

  • Why is this marked expired? Ends November 26

  • Anyone please let us know when they receive the code, and how it is delivered? Cheers

    • Just received and ordered. Telstra sent the code by sms and email

      • Thanks. I still have not received mine :(

      • When did you order and when was the phone delivered/activated? I still haven't received mine…

        • When did you order

          Oct 4th

and when was the phone delivered

          Oct 15th

          activated?

Plan was activated when phone arrived.
And code received a day after plan was active. Which mean code is triggered by phone arrival and plan active nothing to do with using a sim card (my phone still sealed)

          • @snvl: Thanks. I ordered on 6th Oct, and my phone was delivered on 15 Oct. Still don't have my code.

Also, I ordered a $55 small plan, but they sent me a bill with a $65 medium plan. I don't know how this happened. Does Telstra process all their online orders manually?

  • +1

I was told in store I should be able to purchase the Google pixel outright for 999
Plug my existing Telstra Sim card init, and still get the text to redeem the hub max, if so, this is great
    Anyone else know?
It doesn't state new sign up only and the webstore let's you buy outright, it just says activate your Telstra on the Google pixel
    Then it made me think
What if I bought a pixel anywhere and out my Telstra Sim in, like how would it know the phone is Telstra or jbhifi or wherever

    • Seems another guy said new contract only. Will wait and see if anyone has purchased the phone outright, Telstra, or another company and if they still get the text message if they're currently with Telstra.

    • yes they've just updated their site now… after already pre-ordering just to cancel the plan haha.

    • Did you manage to figure out if it's new Telstra sign ups only? Or would it work for an existing Telstra sim?

  • So if i buy a month to month plan seprately and buy the phone outright, it should be ok to get the hub max? If thats the case i would go for this deal straightaway coz it avoids the whole cancellation business for phone. Only the plan would have to be cancelled
I am in Metro Melbourne, so cant walk into a store to get it have to purchase it differently

  • UPDATE: No plan cost, can purchase $999 outright from Telstra online.

Update to update: marked title to be update by mod about the $999 outright, they pointed out that apparently you need to "activate a Telstra Service" to obtain the home hub, so although it still shows on the site, you wont get it then…

    • Just to clarify, to get the Hub Max, what I need to do is:

      1. Purchase the Pixel 5 outright from Telstra for $999
      2. Plug in my Telstra sim (can it be an existing service or does it have to be new?)

As long as I do the 2 steps above I'll get a Hub Max code?

      • Plug in my Telstra sim (can it be an existing service or does it have to be new?)

This isn’t needed, phone is still in the box and i got a code

I don’t know about outright tho

        • can you please tell me how this works?

I was going to buy the phone outright via the website and chat says I can get the code, store says not until I activate with a telstra sim.
          No-one seems to really know.

          Thanks,
          David

  • Can the Google Pixel be bought from another location (JBHiFi) and then activate a Telstra plan on it?

    • No. It needs to be a Telstra month to month plan. JB etc 12 month plans won't qualify.

  • When I tried to sign up or this, was told by Telstra staff that this is OOS, maybe he was trying hard to sell me the iPhone 12. Has anyone been able to order in last day or so and received confirmation?

  • Ok I've spoken to store reps and online people.
They all seem to say that if you buy the phone outright and also a post-paid sim, you're eligible.

However…. you cannot buy these together on the site, as it puts the phone on a plan.
Also if you're in Melbourne, you won't be able to go into a store, nor will they answer their phones.

I've tried to order this through online chat, like they said they could, though they then go inactive for over 30mins…

It really shouldn't be this hard.
I'm wondering if I'm better off buying the phones on plans, then cancelling the plan and paying the phone off?
Unsure how this impacts credit rating.

  • you buy the phone outright and also a post-paid sim,

I'm better off buying the phones on plans, then cancelling the plan and paying the phone off?

Whats the difference? You are overthinking it

    • The difference is they won't sell me both, I don't want to take chances.
Just going to wait for the stores to open in Melbourne and get it then…too risky for all this with the chance of not getting the max.

They did however say don't buy the phone plan and cancel as it would affect my credit rating.

      • Again, why do you buy separately?

Plan + outright is the same as plan with phone

        Just buy plan with phone

        • If i buy phone outright on site, it won't let me add a sim only month to month.

If I buy a sim only month to month and add the phone, it makes me put the phone on a plan.
So I would then have to cancel the plan (get a cross against my name) and then pay the rest of the phone outright.

I just want to buy the phone outright with a sim oly month to month

          • +1

            @HappyPooPants:

If I buy a sim only month to month and add the phone, it makes me put the phone on a plan.

Telstra has no plans. All are month to months

The devices cost is split on 12 or 24 months. You can call any time and pay that in full.

You can keep going with the month to month

            • @snvl: ah ok. I'll just do that then….after I get the promo code of course, which I assume will be within 30 days, don't want to keep the sim.

  • I went into a Telstra store and was able to get the hub when adding to my existing account, however a couple hours later they sent as email saying they are forcing me to a new plan and my only option was to leave Telstra if I didn't want my plan switched.
They moved me from the $49 with $10 discount ($39) to $55 with $10 discount ($45).

    • I would be checking anything you signed, otherwise that's pretty dodgy.

Paying an extra $6 month would eventually have you paying for the hub anyway.. and you won't have an option to go back to the cheaper plan anymore.
      Sounds like you lost out.

      • Yeah thought so too. Pretty sure they are going through older accounts and forcing the switchover anyway. The update to the account probably fast tracked the change.
Might be time to change providers. Telstra seem to not care about losing customers right now.

        • If Voda is ok in your area, check them, they provide decent sim only plans with 5g included.

    • I suspect these were two separate events. A number of people on whirlpool are posting about being forced onto new $55 service with $10 discount ($45)

  • Signing up to a plan is probably worth it. I was able to stack the hub max, 45000 points and get on the $115 plan with $50 monthly credit.
Just hoping on receiving it all.
Tried to get the $72 from Cashrewards but my order couldn't be processed online

    • You already got 45000 points showing in your account?
