Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 4G 128GB $0 / 5G $149 Upfront on Telstra $99 150GB P/M 12M Contract (New / Port-In Customers) @ JB Hi-Fi

1840

Greetings everyone, just spotted that JB have placed the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 4G 128gb on promotion on their $99 Per Month 150gb Plan.

Considering that this plan has a $594 Early Termination Charge, you could essentially get the phone for $594 (+pro-rated first month charge) if you cancelled the plan early :)

Seems like an awesome deal for a brand new phone which is $799 on the Samsung Education store.

The 5G variant is also available for $149 Upfront.

I believe this may also be eligible for free Samsung Galaxy Buds Live too. May need to confirm with the store staff when ordering, the advertisement doesn't include this, however the bonus has been eligible on JB deals in the past.

As always, enjoy!

Note: In Store Only, may exclude some Victorian residents.

Edit: You can signup today 8/10 and pick up the phone when it starts tomorrow. See comments.

          You won't pay 99 for 1 month

        • +1

Your option a with 'most likely' is wrong. So go with b.

Look through the other 100s of telstra/JB deals and it's always the same. Pay the ETC and off you go.

        • +2

          @cr4sh0verrride
You are not getting it mate
Early termination charge is a set figure, which is $594.
Then you also have to pay out the monthly plan BUT only at pro rata of the time you had the plan active. Eg if active for 3 days then you pay 3 days of the plan.
All this is calculated at once.
It will be approx $600 if you go through the process quickly.

No one cares about who forks the loss between RRP - termination costs. The saving from this method is in your favour. That's all that matters. Which is why it is posted as a deal!

          • -3

            @yellowfever: No I understand

Whatever the price ends up being.. its substantially less than $1149

Telstra get all the money as well.. unless JB get some kick back for every sign up..

Hahaha no one cares? Just as long as you are getting a good deal! What a perfect attitude to have

I don't understand how deals like this could be constantly viable if people take advantage of it in this way

            • @cr4sh0verride: They can't unless they are turning a profit.

              • @plague69: They probably don't turn a profit on the people that cancel, and only offer it because they're legally obliged to provide the early termination. They can't network lock the phones because they're provided through JB and not Telstra Store. Overall they'd turn a profit because most people would stay with the plan and pay the "minimum cost" for the 12 months.

    • I thought that someone taking their user name from the movie Hackers would understand better

      • Yeah because my intelligence is linked to a laughably inaccurate portrayal of hacking from a 90's movie.. What an inciteful comment

Again my point is not the exact numbers.. it's that it's a lot less than retail pricing.. spread across 2 companies..

Companies are in business to make money

So pray tell in your infinite wisdom and channeling of Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller tell me how JB or Telstra benefit from this deal at all if every person took advantage of it in this way?

        • +2

          Hackers is an awesome movie

          JB wouldn't - Telstra would

JB would wear the brunt, as they might get a commission recall (might) due to the cancelled plans. Additionally they would wear the write down on the cost of the device. Also depends on the buying power and what price they buy the phone for.

Telstra on the other hand would receive plenty of people handing them money due to cancelled plans. Perhaps they are nice and share the love ETC with JB.

There is a margin there, so they offer the deal (even if they factor in Ozb. and all the evil people scheming for a cheaper handset). A smart marketing team would factor this in to their equation

Now please don't take offence to the remark, it is a joke and reference to the laughable fantastic portrayal of a clever geek who overcame a greedy IT Security expert that was going to cause a worldwide environmental catastrophe.

You should feel good that I acknowledge your wonderful taste in cult 90's movies - I applaud you

        • JB gets a finder's fee. It's out of old Ts pocket

  • +1

the big question is, can we get new number instead of porting. in the past it is possible even though deal says portin.
yes i know can get prepaid $2 but its easier to just walk in and get new number straight

    • Yes why not?

I just did last week for the Fold. Already terminated

    • I did the same process for the recent S20+ deal that JB/Telstra had.
I simply signed up with a new number since I wanted to keep my Optus SIM only plan.
Signed up and then cancelled the same day. People like to port out because it means you don't have to deal with Telstra chat which will repeat several times asky why are you leaving and if there's anything that can be done to keep you on. It's a bit annoying, but after the third time I simpy said, politely, if they can please stop repeating the same question and let us move on.

      • is using the chat the recommended way to go about cancelling the plan

    • New number no problems - no need to port in, so save a lot of hassle

  • never heard of FE, apparently this is a cheaper version of the s10.

    Looking at GSM arena.

Can some one detail the difference/whats missing from this from the premium version?

    • +2

Off the top of my head

      Plastic back
      Slightly worse Cameras
      Slightly worse screen

      • +1

        Also slightly worse Gorilla glass.
And the box doesn't include any wired headphones.

    • Me think it the fubar edition

    • +11

      It's kind of a s***show.

The main negatives when you go with the FE: plastic back, slightly lower spec'd cameras, Gorilla glass 3 instead of 6, lower screen resolution. There are also some cosmetic downgrades besides the plastic back - thicker bezels around the screen, and while the front camera is actually smaller, they've made it visually more prominent by making it appear a bit silver around the rim of the camera.

The screen is also entirely flat, as opposed to curved slightly at the edges, but a lot of people prefer this over the curved edge.

The thing is though, if you're sourcing your 'premium' S20 (or non-FE variant) from within Australia, you're stuck with the Exynos 990 chip. This is largely considered inferior to the Snapdragon chip that the otherwise same phones get in other regions. People usually cite deficiencies of the Exynos as having poorer performance/processing power, worse battery life, gets hotter quicker under load which leads to earlier throttling, and some even say they have marginally worse camera performance.

If you want an S20 with the Snapdragon, and you want to source the phone from within Australia, you basically have to go with the S20 FE 5G. Apparently all FE 5G's worldwide come with the Snapdragon, which leads to the unusual situation here where you can spend ~$1800 for a Samsung's flagship Note 20 Ultra, or you can get a S20 FE 5G for half the price (depending on where/how you buy) and get a better processor.

Aside from these differences, they are largely the same device, especially in the specs that people care about in the current phone market. E.g. large OLED 120hz screen, very good combination of telephoto, wide, and ultrawide cameras, wireless and fast charging, large 4500mAh battery, and fast UFS 3.1 storage.

      • thanks, looking at GSM arena, and seeing all these minor downgrades… without the implication of all it together…

        • So summary s20FE is good?

          • +1

@CyberMurning: Yes its good for the price, especially in comparison to the specs being offered by the Google Pixel 5.

      • +1

Yeah this shit pisses me off.

My first preference would've been Pixel 5, would be willing to pay another 2-300$ for 865 (which is already near end of its cycle) but nope Google wants to screw me over.

Otherwise would go for regular S20 (note or galaxy) but again screwed over by Exynos… which leaves me with not much choice other than going for the FE.. Might just bite the bullet and go for FE and then upgrade earlier than usual, especially since I held my Pixel 2 for a year longer than I planned.

        • Just be prepared to be disappointed by the camera IF you take photos of family /friends, especially kids. I've tried to leave the pixel phones behind since they fall short in so many areas but I just can't stand how poor the processing of faces is when using other phones. Argh, drives me up the wall…

          • +1

@picket23: You'll be saved by GCam! People have ported the Google Camera app from the Pixel so that it's compatible with any phone. Download it from the XDA Developers website.

Also, apparently the new One UI 3.0 update removes face smoothing!

            • @Techie4066: Gcam too much of a hassle and not as consistent as proper Google still. Didn't know that about the new Samsung update though, but just because they are trying to improve doesn't mean they'll succeed. We'll see though, fingers crossed!

  • Is the $99 paid in advance or in arrears

    • +1

In arrears, if you cancel 1 day after signing up the plan cost will be 1/30 days pro-rated.

  • Does it show on the receipt as you paid for the phone or as $0?

    • +2

Phone cost is RRP on the receipt, fully (4G) / partially (5G) paid by a gift card.

  • Whats the process for signing up then cancelling? Do you literally go into the store, sign up then call up the next day to cancel? Who do you call? Is it Telstra or JB? Surely the person you call to cancel will see you are exploiting as you only signed up yesterday and are cancelling already? Do they ask you why your cancelling?

    • +11
      1. Go into JB Hi-Fi and sign-up to the plan through the staff member. This will activate your Telstra service.
      2. Finalise all of the paperwork/sign-up and walk out the door with the phone.
      3. When the plan is fully provisioned, call Telstra (or go through the app / website) and cancel the plan. The ETC bill will be emailed a few days later (inclusive of pro-rata fees + ETC).
      • When do you then claim the Galaxy Buds Live with this deal?

      • Cool. So you can cancel it through the app without speaking to anyone? What reasons do people normally use when they ask why your cancelling?

      • I cant find the option to cancel on the app / website, do you have anything more specific?

        • Sorry I only just saw your comment now. Could you please try entering your information here and see if you can change or cancel your plan through that link?

I don't have a current active service unfortunately to explain exactly how to do it, however when I have previously cancelled it was simple as logging into the TelstraID, then selecting the mobile service and going to change / cancel the plan. I can't exactly remember the prompts to do this, however it was fairly simple if the plan was tied to a TelstraID account.

          • +1

@doweyy: No worries. Went through live chat and they did it for me.

            • @CodeXD: Do they ask why you are canceling after 1 day?

      • Hey mate, I already ported out to Kogan mobile. Do I still need to call Telstra to go through the cancellation process?

        • Walk into the JB store and get a new Telstra phone number. No need to port.

If you already have the phone, just use the website to check the plan is cancelled.

          • @Techie4066: I got the phone already. Do I need to register to check from the website?

            • +2

@theOZmate: just put the telstra sim to any spare phone, if no signal/cant make or receive call means it has been cancelled.
no need to speak with telstra, just wait for the bill - if you dont get the bill after few weeks dont feel happy go chase them otherwise you will get a mark on your credit report as having a debt.

  • +1

Does the etc have an effect on my credit rating or is it just a small blip? Any information is appreciated

    • The application of the plan has a small bleep on your credit report, not the ETC itself.

From personal experience, it does not affect credit card churn.

    • +2

It will have an effect on your credit rating with Telstra Only, as when you terminate it gets flagged in their system. Otherwise no effect on general credit rating. When they do a credit check, it will just be recorded in your credit report.

  • +1

i pre-ordered 256gb version SD with my Note 9 trade in so all up paid $684 includes bud live bonus so if i sell bud live for $200 then my cost for s20 Fe is $484 upfront
I also signed up with $59pm Telstra with $500 JB Hifi gift card bonus so if i could sell the gift card $450 then I might get the phone for $34 which still also pay $59 for plan as the plan comes with 5G connection. Better deal that way

    • +7

if you have a note 9 to start with..

      • you can trade-in with any phones but depend on model and condition with $200 bonus top up on top of what they would value yours

        • I think he meant that you have a pretty good phone (Note 9) already. Why trade it in?

          • @Trishool: why not, i got upgraded for nothing so trade in is much better choice for me. I won't be able to sell my Note 9 for $500 plus in gumtree anyway

    • +1

@daywalker282 - who does trade is it JB or Telstra?

      • +1

Samsung website, current promotion for S20 FE pre-order valid until 31/10

      • samsung

  • Is there a cheaper plan with the FE, one that's sub $75 a month?

  • +2

Just wait 3 months and it will be close to $1K

I watched the S20+ 5G plummet quite quickly

    • +3

Most android phones are like that. But some people want the new phone feeling straight away and pay close to rrp

      • It's hard if you need a new phone right now (current phone could be damaged or 3 years old, like mine). There is no other phone like this at this price. The storage speeds and selfie camera are somehow better than the normal S20.

  • Anyone know the cheapest sim to buy to port over for this deal?

    • +2

You can just get new number from telstra, no need to port it, sign up to a new number.

      • Went in store today to ask and they said has to be port in as per the catalogue

        • +1

That is incorrect. I signed up with a new number today although I am an exiting Telstra customer.

          • +2

@min2: Depends on the store/rep you talk to. The catalogue specifically says "when you switch your number to telstra…" so some stores won't do it without a port in number

  • -1

I don't get this. On jbhifi website the phone says pre-order. But tomorrow we can come and pick up one with this Telstra deal?

    • Yes, be in pre-orders ship tomorrow, so probably phone will be available in stores as well tomorrow.

  • Oh! didn't know such thing even exists until now.

  • +2

I'm not going to repost the wall of text explaining to people the deal. But for those still confused on how this all works refer to my comment below :

The only change that needs to be made to my original comment is

Total cost of phone "outright" :
    * $0 (if buying the 4g version) + $594 (ETC) = $594
    * $149 (upfront cost of 5g variant phone) + $594 (ETC) = $743

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/9191413/redir

    • how does Telstra not close this loophole? It almost seems too good to be true. Would make more sense for them to make the ETC much higher to stop this

      • +4

The phone has nothing to do with Telstra. It's paid for by JB with JB's own gift cards. From Telstra's perspective they are getting upfront 6 month payouts for doing nothing.

      • Easy, exit fee lower exponentially as you get closer to the end date. Not just flat per month. So 1 month into contract, it would be much higher, 1 month left will be much lower compared to now

  • +1

Per the free buds, if you look at JB catalogue it says free buds if you buy phone before 14 October.

  • +8

For all the newbie if you signup at jbhifi tomorrow please don't say you will cancel the plan, pretty please

  • -2

Is this phone locked to Telstra network after you decide to cancel the plan say after 5days?
Can you use another provider sim card into this phone?

    • Read from page 1

      • -3

        where?

        • On page 1 of comments for this deal…

  • +2

If I didn't go for the S20+ $199 upfront deal from previous posts, I'd jump on this purely for the SD 5G variant.

Still haven't received a final invoice from Telstra for the ETC and it's almost been 2 months.

    • Same no invoice! So annoying. They told me 1-2 billing cycles and I would get the bill…..

      • +3

Some people from previous telstra/JB Hi-Fi deals have mentioned they never received an ETC bill…so fingers crossed for you!

        • +3

What the hell haha! That would be so annoying. As in the fear of having this debt they forgot to notify me of accumulating over 50 years.

          • @fd9: A friend of mine never received any ETC invoice for his two JB Telstra deals cancellations over a span of 3 months, but when he went to subscribe 3rd time (Note 20 deal) his credit check failed. So apparently blacklisted by Telstra in their system, as his credit profile hadn’t change otherwise. So thats what one needs to consider.

            • +1

@usmanhafeez2000: Thank you Usman for the information :)

            • @usmanhafeez2000: I wonder if anyone else other than your friend have this problem.

He could have been blacklisted by Telstra because he didn't pay his ETC twice (which might not be his fault).

              • @e4c5: He hasn’t checked with Telstra yet, as he knows what could be the reason.
But it will be good if anyone else can share his experience.

    • Still haven't received the bill either! big losses for T

    • I never received a bill but my credit card just got charged the ETC 2 days ago for the s20+ deal.

  • +2

In the current jb catalogue, it says the phone is available on 9/10. It also says pre-orders receive the galaxy buds. Can anyone confirm whether it will be possible to go in store on 8/10 to pre-order/ sign up for this plan and receive the buds too?

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/124369/83413/capture_2…

  • currently I'm getting $10/month off to my phone bill since my home internet is with telstra. I wonder if I port out my number to a different service provider and then sign up this JB deal, would I again get that $10 discount from $99/month?

    • On the last $99/mth deal, they provided a $10 monthly credit for 12 mths

  • FYI guys just went in store 5G version Deal has expired (expired on the 2/10) 4G STILL AVAILABLE

    • +1

That can't be right, the deal only started last night as part of this catalogue?
