Tempted to get this, use the 35 pack as a year long sim, have fun playing with a new toy for a bit, then dump it on CEX for a fiver profit, Voda locked variant trades for 96 cash https://au.webuy.com/product-detail?id=SHMDPUP4G128MBVODA&ca…

The better question, how long would they hold that payout cash price? 🧐

  • Use with Felix unlimited sim for cheap endless data.

    • For what cost

      • +1

Current Felix sale is $16/month for unlimited data for the first 4 months

    • So you can hotspot with this phone?

      • I think you would be hard pressed to find a phone that you can't hotspot with

  • Can you still sign up for everyday rewards for this coupon to work?

    replaceable battery, microSD, headphone jack

    • +6

Can't even get those things on expensive phones, go figure.

      • +1

Companies love to say how they don't have room for this stuff, but a cheap phone that's no bigger can have everything and no increase in size. It's all bollocks

  • +1

Cheap phones with esim yet? (Apart from secondhand motos above)

    • +2

You can use an eSIM adapter in the second sim slot, like I did. Costs $38 for the adapter, post here.

      • +1

Nice write up. Thanks for sharing. Is this the same thing (but without an app). Just a read/ writeable sim card?

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007225003234.html?

        • Is this the same thing

No. From part of the description "Only support 0.5cm*0.6cm size esim use", their usage of "esim" means something different.

From the photos and the comments, that is an adapter board to suit a 5x6mm-size EEPROM chip, which has already been programmed as an eSIM. But they say it doesn't come with the EEPROM chip, and one of the photos shows that chip being soldered into the adapter board.

So what they're selling is only a PCB made to a special shape, for use with an EEPROM that has been removed from a GSM tracker.

You really need an app, although there is open-source PC software available for one brand of eSIM adapter. The app scans the eSIM QR code, downloads the eSIM data in a particular format, then loads it into the adapter. The adapter also has an EID permanently stored on it, which I think is the eSIM equivalent of an IMEI.

          • @Russ: Ah, that makes sense. I don't need one just yet. Will watch the space. Assume they will be everywhere soon/ Telcos themselves will start using them.

            • @tunzafun001:

Assume … Telcos themselves will start using them.

I don't think they will. To a telco, eSIMs encourage competition, and that's the last thing they want. They'd rather "lock you in" with a physical SIM, if they can.

It's mobile phone manufacturers who like eSIM, they see it as a way to get people to buy their more-expensive phones. Same as with QI charging - I can buy an external QI "receiver" to add QI charging ability to my phone for less than $5, but the phone manufacturers won't put that functionality into any phone costing less than about $250, because they use it as an incentive to buy their more profitable phones.

        • +1

Correction, it's not an EEPROM that goes into that adaptor, it's an eUICC chip. Contains memory, an operating system and an encryption engine.

Data of a typical eUICC chip is here:
          https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/product/security-smart-card-…

          • @Russ: Cheers for this.
Not a bad price point at all then considering hardware/ app and support.

      • +1

No way, didn't realise this is a thing. Thanks!

How does this compare to the Samsung Galaxy S25? /s

      Buy this

I have an S25 Ultra, and without having one of these I can still say that per-whatever metric, this is vastly better value

    • Headphone jack, microsd and replaceable battery. Sounds like massively better

  • "If you purchased your device outright to use with a prepaid service, there'll be a fee to unlock it from the Vodafone network.

If you’ve had your device for less than 6 months there’s a $50 unlocking fee.

If you’ve had your device for over 6 months there’s a $25 unlocking fee."

Does that mean I have to connect Vodafone for 6 months or just after 6 months regardless?

    • +3

Does that mean I have to connect Vodafone for 6 months

      No

      just after 6 months regardless

      Yes

      • If you buy the phone from BigW and don't connect to VF at any time, will you still be able to get $25 unlock fee?

When you ask for the unlock, how will VF know you bought the phone 6 months previously?

        • +1

invoice or receipt. Actully, when you connect the phone with WIFI, it has been activated.

    Product Features:

    Free Vodafone $35 Starter Pack
    50MP rear camera
    Large 5000 mAh Battery
    8MP front camera
    Self repair

    WOW Self repair !!!

    • +3

These HMD phones make a feature out of the ability to undertake repairs by the end user.

This is because on their website they provide repair guides and the ability to purchase repair kits and spare parts.

  • The $35 sim is only worth $10. So essentially the phone costing $79. Not sure if 4G RAM is enough these days to have a jitter free experience.

    • +6

Essentially a brand new phone for under $80…

4GB RAM is enough at this price for basic use. Other phones at this price have 2GB RAM.

  • Thanks OP, considering this for my work phone

  • +1

hmm, no stock in canberra, only at young or wagga and no free delivery

  • +1

    oh awesome
thank you :) I'll check it out

  • +2

Just a note that normal SIM card ejector tools might be too short with this phone, so make sure you don't lose the included SIM ejector tool.

    • Or hang on to a paperclip

  • If you unlock… Option
Utilise as a travel mobile and add all travel apps.
Eg… Alipay, WeChat, booking, klook, trip.com etc..
Keep you regular mobile separate with all personal items on it - text messages etc..
But, you can only use with physical travel sim
    - just put Sim in, reboot mobile, turn on data roaming and ready to go

    • Having setup a new phone recently as my main it seems when i had no apps installed it ran great longer battery life etc.

Now that i've installed a buncha apps because of the background processes it does seem like the battery life is worse lol.

Definitely feel like a need a secondary phone just to have apps that i use here and there on that's not necessary for daily use

  • +2

Check if it is sim locked in both slot. The Nokia dual sims ones sold by optarse while back only locked one emei.

    • Hope so! try late.

    • +1

No luck! Both sim slots are locked.

      • What's the phone like? Is it OK for internet use like watching YT and checking OzB?

I don't expect the camera to be any good so not worried about that.

  • -1
  • Can anyone comment on the camera?

    • sucks

      • I wonder if the soft features of the pro version cna be patches this the plus one?

        • you can use pixel software to upgrade the camera

  • -2

    720 x 1612 ehhhh

    • Most people wouldn't notice, and should also get you more battery life

      • +2

And it's also a phone that is less than $90

      • -1

does it though, battery life that is

        i will save the $90

  • Will this work overseas without unlocking here? i believe this is locked to Vodafone if used in Australia. what about overseas?

    • +2

      Highly unlikely.

  • Vodafone doesn't have after-2-year-free-unlock policy? I remember that it had this policy before.

  • Don't forget to stack with the 3% off everyday reward giftcard! You can purchase it through the everyday reward app(“Wallet”entry). Then downto $86.43!
