sweet price for a 2TB external … what floods ?

    • -2

If you were even informed, Seagates manufacturing warehouses weren't affected by the floods, samsungs and WD's were.

      • +4

Just that retailers took the opportunity to jack up the prices to make a buck or two.

        • its probably not just retailers, its just supply/demand - seagate SHOULD have put up their prices as overnight their demand probably went up 40% without any way of increasing supply.

I do wonder though how low stocks actually are though if large retailers can keep offering prices like this though.

        • If Seagate didn't jack up their price they would have more than 75% of market share so stop making crap up.

        • +2

@jared - what? if WD is not making any drives and only relying on old inventory stocks, then if seagate jack up their prices, they have 75% market share - if they dont put up prices they have 75% market share. Have you ever heard of a thing called buisness? or capitalism? or market equilibrium?

The only thing I was questioning is if they sell them at the old prices, how long would it take to run out and (nobody would have any drives.)

        • looking at you MSY!!!!

        • yep, $189 and climbing for the 2TB WD Green from MSY. What a joke… they were $82 a few months ago…. a 130% price increase!!

        • @voter1 Market equilibrium, what a joke, you must assume all consumers are rational too economist. Not all works in practice. Um and WD are making drives, Thailand isn't the only place they manufacture them.

      • A lot of the component suppliers were also affected by the floods, so even though seagate's own factories aren't affected, they're still having a hard time sourcing the bits they need to make drives.

        • So is that why their shares skyrocketed?

        • their stocks rocketed because their main competitor had their production more than halved. There are only 2 main competitors in this market, im not really sure what it is you dont understand or who it is you're angry at.

Is somebody taking advantage of the situation - yes - anybody would - if they dont they're basically screwing themselves over. They are not a charity.

        • You assume that my tone of voice expresses anger, but it doesn't. If the component suppliers stock also halved then Seagate's production would have also halved (approximately). If you think the line 'making crap up' expresses anger, think again.

Sigh, recently got these exact drives from dick smith for $99 each :(

These are amazing drives for only one reason, they NEVER turn off until you turn off your computer, Windows 7 has huge issues with drives like the Samsung Story which turn off after 5 minutes or something.

    • However these drives over heat!!

Having said that, these drives are crackable and the hard drive can be taken out (at the expense of forfeiting warranty).

      • It seems they are designed to run up to 60C, I doubt I have two faulty external HDD's…

Either way, thats why I have only have 2x TB with the other 2x backing them up.

        • I believe the heat is due to the case design. However, once taken out the temps should be fine.

    • i have the 1.5TB seagate expansion hdd, it turns off after some inactivity (15-20min), it is seperate from windows hdd settings.
A plus is that it also turns on/off when the PC turns on/off/sleep/disconnected, as there is no button on the actual drive.
      It's pretty noisy though…

Good price for 2TB, considering i got a 2TB WD internal for $88 a month or two ago when prices were cheap.

What one can do with this bargain is, open the case and use the internal sata interface for internal drives in a tower.

    • Allow me to introduce you to this handy little app:

      http://nosleephd.codeplex.com/

  • Cheapest 2TB internals are 189 from MSY.

I have every intention of buying one of these and cracking it open. Anyone know what drive is inside?

Also these are still available, with plenty of stock, from dick smith for $99.

    • Last month I got one from DSE with $78. I broke the case, and attached HD into motherboard, ran perfectly. Actually it's Seagate Green drives. It's very easy to google the mathod how to open the case.

      Good luck!

    • Sadly the Dick Smith $99 deal ended yesterday and it's now $189

    • Green Drives are not suitable as primary partitions. Too slow and spin-down too much.

  • They run hot because they are 7200rpm drives and it's to be expected.

I note the website says "out of stock" which I assume relates to the sale commencing 24/11. Hopefully Big W will come through with plenty of stock in stores as Ozbargainers have been bitterly disappointed today with all the shortlived external hard drive deals.

    • they are 5900rpm

  • how do you know this is the price commencing 24/11 ? is it in the catalog?

    • Yes, it is in the catalog.

    • where does one find the unreleased catalog :-) ?

  • Sweet thanks. What would you keep WD or Seagate?

  • +2

Woolworths employees will be able to get a further 10% off as well on the weekend.

    • Provided you can hold it before it is sold out.

    • Yep.
$79.20 for Woolies employees this Sat/Sun.

    • nice. will hide a few in the store and pick them up cheaper on the weekend

      • We keep those in lockup and not on the shelf so I wish you the best of luck.

  • +2

Price matching this baby at Officeworks $83.60! :D

  • Bought it from DSE a couple of weeks ago. The bundled software is pretty rubbish, by the way.

  • +10

Please be aware these drives have a high failure/issue rate
    http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-ST3…
131 people gave it 1 star
read the reviews about the issues
my friend got one and it died quite soon after
maybe just dont put any important files on this drive

    • yeap, seen it at amazon with that review, i think almost all external seagate hdd's get similar 1 star reviews, no idea if it's really that bad…

    • i have one, perfectly fine (picked it up a few weeks ago for $99).

most online user experiences are going to be negative. you'll find with online 'customer feedback' that most people trawl the internet looking for a solution when their drive craps itself, and then stumble upon these websites to moan about it. hence, most comments online about nearly every drive is more than likely negative. for instance, i own 3x 2T WD Greens… and I hear no end of people online online moaning about them- but i love them and have never had an issue.

for those interested in cracking these drives open to use as internals, be aware that i cant find anywhere online to confirm this is possible. in fact, most info points to these drives being 'crippled' to prevent such mods (ie they dont have sata and power connectors on back).

i'm very tempted to crack my one open to see, but i dont want to throw away my warranty for nothing.

      • +1

I got one of these a few months ago from Dick Smith - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51119

No problems with cracking open, put it into an Astone USB3 case for the faster transfer speeds. It's a Seagate Barracuda 2TB drive with Manufacture date 05/2011, not 'crippled' at all.

        • thanks for the tips, so tempted now, will OW price match this on the same day?

        • sweet…. thats good to hear. anyone cracked open a recent one though?

  • +19

    Thanks to the OP. But I had to laugh at some of the blurb the copywriters came up with;

"Saving files is easy too, just drag-and-drop."

Wow. If I was running Windows 3.11 I would be impressed.

"Enjoy fast data transfer speed with USB 2.0 connectivity"

OMG. That's the fastest we'll ever see, no doubt… cough, cough

"No software to install. Automatically recognized by Windows®."

Revolutionary. What will they think of next.

"Simply drag and drop to save files."

It was such a mind-blowing feature that they mentioned it twice?

    For once, how about some truth in advertising;

"We stuck a bloody big drive in a so so heat dissipating case and are selling it cheap. Enjoy your pirate collection and Linux ISOs."

    • Who stockpiles Linux ISO's anyway?

      • +1

I don't stockpile Linux ISOs but I do collect Windows editions. I currently have a dual boot with Win7 and Windows 3.1 on my PC.

  • 2TB $88 at BigW starting 24/11,waiting….

  • Seagate's web page does not specify RPM speed and lists 3-year warranty instead of 2. Can anybody confirm the RPM and who is correct about the warranty, Seagate or Big W? Seagate model code is ST320005EXM101-RK.

Note: Follow the Seagate link, then click "2 TB" and "USB 2.0" to bring up the correct specs.

  • Thanks for posting this, going to be getting this! Got one in the previous DSE sale for $79, its still working great.

  • Would buying this and taking out the actual drive to put inside a pc be a good idea? Most places are selling internal 1TB drives for like $120

  • i'm pretty sure i don't need warranty of the casing anyway

but will seagate honour warranty of the drive itself?.. if you crack the case.

    • no.

      • Basic as it gets, but correct. Drives from external cases have SN to identify them as such when inputting them into RMA checkers.
Entering this number they will know it's open and tell you warranty is void.

        • No, that's not right either.

These external drives from manufacturers such as Seagate, WD, Samsung etc were made not to be opened. However while they can be opened, the case is designed to break when pried (due to the flimsy clips) thus voiding the warranty.

        • +2

It IS correct, I think you've just read my post wrong somehow. I said you were correct with your very simple 'No'.

No matter how you open it, the serial number on the actual drive will come up in the RMA check on the manufacturers website as being in an external drive enclosure and will be rejected for warranty.

The external case will have a different number on it and when entered it will give the correct warranty period coverage, as long as it hasn't been opened.

Basically opened = bad, original = good.

        • +1

My bad. Yes, you are indeed right. I must of misinterpreted your comment. (as I haven't slept for more than 24hrs due to Uni exams)

  • +3

I still have mine that died on me after using it for 6 months.

Makes for a nice sturdy paperweight.

  • I heard that MSY are sending flashmobs to buy out stock at all the Big W stores, then sell them at twice the price. :)

    C'mon ACCC !!

    • +2

its not msy making a profit - its synnex the wholesaler, msy just sells a lot of them so they always have the new updated prices from synnex which in this case has been going up.

    • right, thanks for the tip informer, so when can we start the protest?

  • -8

Can't wait to shoplift this from BigW

    • +10

      hahahahahah, that's witty.

Can't wait to abduct your cat and burn your house down.

      • -1

Or abduct his house and burn his cat down….
        I don't know which is worse…

  • +3

Please Make sure you check the mancture date guys. Starting Aug 2011, Seagate uses newer 7200rpm disks in the external hdds. They also have 1tb platters which means thinner body. See detailed info at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1798629&p…. They are discussing this for quite some time already.

    Official link http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?name=ST320005EXM101-RK…

    • that explains why mine reports as 7200rpm…

      • how do you get windows to report what RPM ?

      • Where did you buy yours from? Dick Smith?

        • Correct, Dick Smith, $99 but looks like they are $189 now.

Sounds about right as it seems they sell 7200rpm and these are 5900rpm.

Also plenty of software can read the hard drive information, different hard drives support different information being reported, and these hdd's in particular support reporting of speeds.

    • fantastic tips!

    • how do you check before buying…

      • +1

There's a sticker with S/N, P/N and DOM(Date of manufacture) at the bottom corner of the box.
        eg. DOM 08/11

    • good whirlpool link, thanks wowoyu!

    • There are trade-offs it seems with the newer drives. The newer larger platter drives have higher access times, and thus are not ideal if you want to rip open the drive and use it for OS/gaming.

But they do have higher sustained write/read speeds. So ideal as backup/storage drives.

Think I shall pickup 2 as backups for my Microserver =)

  • This is an incredible deal. The cheapest 2Tb drive from MSY is $185 (2Tb 5400rpm Hitachi). At $88 these should be sold out within hours if the market is aware of just how good the price is. I bet more than a few turn up on eBay for a quick profit.

  • I wonder if they are holding stock back for this sale? Current BigW price $98.
Online there is no stock, and stores within 15km of me have "Low stock (call store on…)".
BigW (online) sale of these at $68 not surprisingly sold out so quick.
Static Ice currently list 2TB USB2.0 External HDD from $89.

  • now have to wait till weekend

    • If you wait till the weekend, you'll probably miss out. This is available from 24/11 - Thursday. On the other hand, it's only $10 less than their regular price, so maybe there will be plenty left.

  • +7

Just went to JB HiFi Belconnen ACT and bought 2 of these 2TB drives for $88 each (price matched Big W).

They were more than happy to give it to me at that price and best of all they said it was no problem that the sale had not started yet. :D

    • +1

      excellent idea.

  • -1

Tried JB-HiFi Chadstone Shopping centre VIC, asked if they would price match?
No Go, you've got to be lucky & get the sales person I think.

  • looks like dick smith have taken down the online 2tb, for $99

the site stated that it was a 7200rpm

    • -1

I brought 10 from DSE, hopefully arrive tomorrow, The site said 7200rpm drives so will have to double check.

      • Yep, all 7200rpm drives , very happy, not to fill them all up :)

  • +5

Officeworks now have them for $88.00, so you guys cant price match - 5%, just got one

    • i grabbed a couple…. the local office works has about 10 in stock, only 2 of which had manufacture dates (09/11)…
made the choice of picking which two boxes easy :)

      • What's the importance of the manufacturer date with these hard drives?

  • 2 left at bigw Collonades. If officeworks are price matching then there will be plenty of stock between the two retailers.

    • None at BigW now. I took the remaining stock from BigW Hallet Cove.

  • +1

Melbourne store didnt have any at all

Took them 30 minutes to tell me they havent received their batch yet

While i was wait 9 other people came waiting too

They Finally told us their batch is due in afternoon

    Their batch size
    4 'yes four deviceas'

Dont anyone bother got Bait Advertising written all over it

If your local store refuses reincheck, remind them of the Bait Advertising laws that assert they must provide a reasonable level of stock for advertising if not they must offer comparable/equal product at same price or a reincheck,
    http://m.consumer.vic.gov.au/shopping-services/advertising-p…
"An electronics retailer runs a major national campaign advertising 50-inch televisions at a low price of $799 for a week-long sale. The retailer usually sells about 30 televisions of this type every week. The retailer only stocks two televisions at the advertised price and refuses to take customer orders. "

With daily turnover of hundreds of thousands of dollars there is clear expectation for each store to have minimun 10 units upto 20-40 units Not the 4 at melbourne and 6 at Waverley store.
They know well what % increase quanitities of products they sell when they are put in catalogues
As such they are required to honour your requests for reinchecks, if they are like the Waverley and refuse reinchecks assert they obey the bait advertising laws or present them with this form
    http://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/CA256902000FE154/Lookup/CAV_Forms_Complaint/$file/consumercomplaint.pdf

    • is there something similar for NSW peeps to arm ourselves with?

    • I was at the Big W at QV Melbourne too.
Still waiting for the manager to call me back for the raincheck.

I was also interested in the Huggies 99s for $30, but the shelves were empty. Big W refused to give me a raincheck saying the supplier has been out of stock for weeks. um… i don't buy it, a saving of $2.88 isn't worth arguing over.

  • More than 10 in stock at Collins Street Officeworks Melb.

All 08/11. I took the last two 09/11.

They did come up at $109 on the register though. Took 10 mins for the guy to confirm price and give me my 5%.
