  • OfficeWorks Bondi Junction had a few left, just bought two there. Manufacturing date is 8/11, haven't checked the RPM yet but I'm using them to store backups so speed isn't an issue for me.

The drives didn't have a price on them so I asked one of the guys in the computer area how much they were, he said they were $109. I showed him the Big W catalogue for $88 and asked him to price-match and he nearly went mental. He tried telling me that was for a different model, so they couldn't price-match. He seemed rather upset. Eventually he calmed down and went to help another customer. While he was helping the other customer I took the drives to the counter and asked how much they were - they actually scanned as $88. A whole lot of drama for nothing!

    • Personally I'm confident they are different models
These are undoubtedly old stock they wish to clear at BigW, however Officeworks needs to blame seagate for not making the versions clearly distinguishable

      • They may be different models in terms of manufacturing, but for the consumer they are identical. 2TB USB-2 drive, same product name. When the man told me Big W are selling a different model for $88 I was trying to think what the difference could be. I suddenly thought, maybe I just diddled myself out of a brand new USB-3 drive! Maybe Big W did a deal and purchased all the new USB-3 stock and are selling it exclusively, but that seems highly unlikely.

I agree with your point about Seagate making the versions indistinguishable. I used to work at a computer store and we'd cop hell when stupid manufacturers who would stamp 'iPod Compatible!!' all over their products, completely ignoring the fact their product didn't work with some iPods. Often the packaging was identical so we'd have to spend hours sorting through the boxes, removing everything individually to see if it would fit a Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3 iPod and label the outside of the box. Ludicrous!

  • Went to Melbourne QV at 8:30 (opening time) this morning. Item was not on display and is still on the pallet according to the person at the front desk.

Left my name/number and he said he'll call once it's unloaded. Called at 12:30 to find out what's happening. I mean if it's on sale, you'd expect them to have gotten it out to display by now.

According to the manager, it's still has to be unloaded and he says that they only have 20 available and will be limiting to 1 unit per customer.

Going to have a read of my rights regarding Bait Advertising and see what recourse I have.

    • thanks for calling!
i'll pop down Friday morning to see what the deal is.
the guy's name was Susila, i think.

  • Cracked the case open this morning.

for those who are interested inside. doesn't list 7200RPM anywhere

    DOM outside box: 08/2011
    DOM labelled on HDD: 07/2011

    • mine is the same model, ST2000DM001.

Googling suggests its a 7200RPM model?

Anyway, cracking open the case was a piece of cake. A car key is a perfect tool to open it with.

      • Interesting that is says "Made in Thailand".
Can you open the case without breaking any of the tabs, etc (i.e. so you can put back together if you have a warranty issue)?

        • I tried with all mine and i couldn't save all the tabs no matter how hard i tried.

      • I hardly had to force the case open after the dumba$$ checkout chick dropped it.

Gees Big W employ some dummies. At least they let me buy ALL of their stock hehehehe.

Officework will pricematch their 7200rpm units, BUT only 2 then you pay full price the guys there said!!!

Everyone is getting scammy like us groundlings.

  • It's not the Thai floods that are causing the prices of disk drives to increase as some are reporting. Thailand only manufactures a small percentage of HD's. Most HDs are made in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Korea. The prices are kept high because of the recent mergers of big manufacturers (Western Digital with Hitachi / Samsung with Seagate) therefore creating less competition in the market.

    • Thailand produces 25% of the world's hard drives. A large proportion of that are the cheap models favoured by consumers. WD Malaysia makes higher end hard drives. Samsung produces drives in Korea but has been bought out. Philippines make laptop HDDs. China is Seagate's base.

NIDEC, the major manufacturer of hard drive motors, makes 70% of its motors in the flood affected area. Don't forget about the component manufacturers which are affected by the flooding, even if the assembly factory in China isn't.

The Hitach and Samsung mergers were announced over 6 months ago, so if prices were to rise they would have risen back then.

  • Went to 3 BigW's all sold out bugga! Though back ordered some for the sale price.

Plenty on the shelf at BigW Westfield Marion SA. None at two other stores I passed by today. It's very patchy.

Went to BigW and missed the last one by 10 minutes (stock ran out by 10.30am????). Next batch coming in was due on Monday so I went to JB Hifi and they said they couldn't match the price. Dicksmith was even worse! They didn't even have it on the shelves. I went to another Dicksmith in another shopping mall without a BigW and they didn't even have the hard disks on the shelf. I looked for a staff that seemed like she was new there and asked her to check whether they had the 2TB one in stock (only the 1TB and 3TB models were on display). She told me that they had it in stock and luckily the post office was in the same mall and I had to state that Dicksmith had a price matching policy and they can't deny me that price so I got mine for $99. Couldn't be bothered calling BigW to check for restock since it is only $11 more.

  • Picked up the last two at Big W Stafford. They were hidden at the back of the shelf. Lucky! The 1TB ones were going for $84, haha.
I was at officeworks before and it's back at $109 there.

  • got one at Harvynorman for 88!! wohoo!

  • You can order online from Big W. It's also at $88.

If you hurry, you can still get free delivery if you pay with Paypal - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/57788 - but the free shipping ends 23:59:59 AEST Friday 25/11/2011

      It's out of stock…??????????

      • It's in stock…??????????

        (Sunday 27/11 7:15 am Brisbane)

  • I don't suppose anyone knows if you can turn off the power saving auto spindown feature. I have an external Samsung I use for work etc and it shuts itself off after 5 minutes of idle time, then takes almost a minute to wake up.

I don't hold out much hope of my Big W having stock left but yeah..

Answered my own question. Just wish it was that easy for the damn Samsung!

  • i have just gotten a pricematch $83.60 (sticker price $109) @ officeworks clarence st, sydney. they had about 10 drives left on the shelf. should this be posted as a separate deal, i have the docket.

  • Deal has now expired - drives are back to $98 on the BigW webpage (still out of stock tho).

    • $98 is still not bad compared to the price at OfficeWorks.

    • Totally out of stock in SA it seems, I've rung every store.

Staff say they have some coming in just before Xmas but they are all sold on raincheck & back order.

Last of the cheap post Thailand flood HD's for a while I reckon :(

  • Anyone know what model drive is in these ones? I ripped my old one apart yesterday that I got from JBHifi ages ago for $99 and it has a Barracuda XT 2tb ST32000641AS. Perfect for my server and they are going for $300+ at the moment for internal drive. Need to get one more though for RAID :P
