Why is the Officeworks price more expensive than the Tobydeals price?

    • +13

They won't price-beat Toby-deals, OP is simply giving you a second option to get a near-price in a bricks and mortar.

      • Ow beat any price including grey imports
        Atlest for me anyway

        • +1

Unless lucky, they won't price beat Grey Imports because the warranty is different- therefore the product is not the same.

          • +2

@Fooah: Warranty doesn't actually matter, it was changed a while ago to not have warranty be a requirement.

The problem with Tobydeals is they don't have the model number in their listings so Officeworks can't verify if it matches their stock.

eg- The model for the Ipad Officeworks stock is MY232XA. This cannot be found anywhere on the listing on Tobydeals!

            • @domadgee: That is good to know, sounds like Officeworks have improved their price beat of late

    • +2

I have previously asked OfficeWorks to Pricebeat TobyDeals and they told me they won’t
/don’t because they are “aware” of the level of dissatisfaction customers report about poor experiences with TobyDeals. Only saying … I must admit I’ve never shopped TobyDeals so I had no comeback.

      • +5

        Bull.

      • +3

Just tell them service is not an exclusion in the OfficeWorks Price Beat Guarantee

        • +4

aint TD grey import? which is excluded i believe

Officeworks will not price beat Tobydeals.

    • Huh. I've gotten them to price beat Galaxy Buds on Tobydeals before. Got lucky I guess.

The Officeworks price-beat is not with Tobydeals. It is with another store

Only if you need the “pro” features otherwise iPad Air 4th gen is amazing deal for the rest of us.

    • what are the pro features?

      • +9

120hz screen, 6gb ram, a12z processor, quad stereo speakers, ultrawide + lidar + flash camera setup

        • I'm in doubt reg quad speakers. I checked the new iPad Air at Costco the other day and it has 4 speaker grills. Didn't do a sound test though. To confirm its Air I checked the new fingerprint scanner thing on the power button.

          • +1

@0zyt0zy: Stereo for the new Air, quad for the pro. It has 4 speaker grills but only two speakers.

        • FaceID too.

      • +1

USB-C, 120 Hz, better screen, better camera, faster CPU, more RAM

        • +1

iPad Air 4 has USB-C, same screen (just not 120hz), same camera, almost the same CPU

          • @expatOz: I think the air only has one camera so loses out on wide angle and lidar. And it is either 64gb or 256gb (which is more than a $200 upgrade)

  • +2

Note : You could use any cash back card like HSBC Everyday (2% cash back)

Does the cashback apply to purchases over $100? I thought it only applies to purchases below $100.

    • Thank you. Updated

    • Just ask them to split it into 12 transactions. EZ

Lots of bad reports, I wouldn't

    • +2

Got a canon mirrorless from them. Didn’t read online reviews of the store before purchasing. Arrived in 4 business days (during COVID). Camera came with US charger and international plug to use with it which I didn’t know about. Overall I’m happy as it was $100 less than JB sale price.

      • They're not an Aus local company (name is misleading) so you don't get any ACL coverage if something goes wrong beyond warranty. Probably won't get any warranty from them direct too as others have complained. Bit of a trade-off for $100 on an expensive unit but to each their own I guess.

Likewise, I would not recommend buying a $1,000+ iPad from a grey market seller abroad.

        • Totally agree, especially when we are in a recession why are we sending money offshore?
I don't agree with grey importers allowing to have an Australian presence.
Having investigated into their website, it appears they are the old eGlobal/DWI

@[Deactivated]: I don't agree either especially when their shipping costs are lower than what local aussie businesses get from Australia post.

I would, however, point out, many businesses, although local, are wholly foreign owned, pay little local tax, and any profits are just transferred overseas.

We should seek to support local businesses, that are Australian owned (regardless of race) where the profits are kept and spent inside the country. Obviously not all things can be made here feasibly, but least the business owner should be spending their money here ideally.

            • @CalmLemons: Support local BnM or online, especially with expensive items that come with local warranties.
Grey importers are a pita to deal with.

          • +4

@[Deactivated]: Apple technically doesn’t pay its fair share of taxes in Australia as well.

            • +2

@Michaelz101: I always feel that no one really pays their fair share of taxes in Australia except a few salaried folks.

        • Yeah in hindsight probably wasn’t a good move. Was a silly decision (excitement of the deal lol) and was fooled that it was an Aussie store with the domain name.

Anywho - it’s been 6 months and the camera is working perfectly, no complaints from me.

    • bought a lens from them. within 20 minutes of purchase was getting feedback and sent that day. Turned up quick as well….absolutely no complaints

    • I ordered an airpod before, been wait for ages and end up ask paypals for refund

    • +2

from personal experience, they are happy to take your money but are less than helpful come warranty claim time. I wont shop with them again as its very hard to get them honour their warranty obligations as they ship from Hong Kong and therefore aren't bound by Australian Consumer law

      • +1

If they have an ABN they are bound by ACL

        • I did an ABN search for them and it appears they dont have one :(

          • +2

@discountguy: So you should consider not giving them your money, not you but people in general.
Aust govt is paying businesses to keep on employees with Jobkeeper, we should think wisely how taxes are paying for this and how we can support our own economy.

  • +2

Awesome iPad, love my one! The screen on the 12.9 is exceptional, but the 11 I’ve found to have the best balance for something to hold for longer periods of time.

      • -4

so now we have other Apple users telling fellow Apple users how they should use the product. Its bad enough Apple themselves are telling its users they are holding it wrong. Now it coming from its user base too? Wow. Just wow.

        • +1

          Wow. Just wow.

Huh? I am referring to the ergonomics of tablet devices in general, which has nothing to do with your hissy-fit about Apple users.

The fact is, holding a tablet device "in the air" for long periods, will be fatiguing and won't make sense in terms of ergonomics. For example, standing at the bus stop, people will hold their phones no problem. But a tablet? Rarely.

The exception is professional use such as in a warehouse, where the tablet replaces a clipboard as you walk around doing inventory etc. That's really the only time the argument for "holding for long periods" comes into play.

          • -1

@cerealJay: I'm not arguing with you about the ergonomics of wanting or having to hold one for long periods if time.

If someone wants to hold one for long periods of time for whatever their excuse or reason for doing so. thats not for anyone to tell them otherwise.

            You asked.

Why would anyone need to hold an iPad for long periods of time?

Then later proceeded to answer your own question.

The exception is professional use such as in a warehouse, where the tablet replaces a clipboard as you walk around doing inventory

            • @xoom: You're being ridiculously over-sensitive. Please take your meds.

I didn't "tell anyone what to do". I asked the question "why would…" after someone suggested the 11 inch is better than 12.9 because of "holding for long periods". It's perfectly reasonable to raise the valid point that tablets are NOT generally held for long periods without support.

The exception I outlined is a rare exception, since these consumer devices are mainly used in the home or office, not "walking around a warehouse". Most people get the smart covers or cases with stands, for a reason…. that reason is these devices are best used when supported not by the efforts of your own hand. Get it now? Or are you still confused?

              • +1

@cerealJay: I knew from the start that there are people that have to use these propped up on their arm or held for long periods of time. Yes its not a common thing which is perhaps why you asked why millikano does it. And yes while not ideal its not like a choice. People out in the field/building sites or warehouses use these tablets in this manner.

      • +2

I actually bought my iPad specifically to hold. I don’t even use it really, just carry it around to look professional. Fake it till’ you make it!

If you’re like me, I have almost completely given up paper based notes, and use notability on the iPad with the pencil. It’s been useful for meetings, site walks (incorporating photos into notes too), tech drawings and automation equipment commissioning.

For the record, it does also work equally well on a desk.

        • +2

I'm an owner of the 12.9 ipad pro from 2018 as a full time uni student. I thought itd be the better option as it seemed the most similar to an a4 piece of paper but I really wish I went for the 11 inch as the 12.9 can just be too big and clumsy sometimes. Also, if you plan to use this iPad as a laptop replacement, I'd recommend the tab s7+ over it honestly because of how amazing dex is. I used it with my monitor at home on my friend's device and it literally feels like a portable computer which is amazing. However, the iPad is still an amazing device and I do not regret my purchase :)

          • @valiwa: I find the 12.9 inch ipad Pro's screen is big enough to not require a second monitor. I sit mine on a robust music stand in front of the sofa, and I control it using a wireless keyboard and wireless trackpad. So I can work in comfort.

        • Yes and the professional use you outlined is the exception to the norm. "Site walks" would be on the rare side of typical usage for iPad users. But yes, the lighter weight would be useful there.

You mention "meetings", but unless it's a stand-up meeting, you'll be sitting down in a chair, and your iPad will likely be resting on edge of table, in your lap, or sitting on table. The 12.9 inch would be the better iPad in this case.

"tech drawings "… I doubt anyone is doing technical drawings on any tablet, without the tablet sitting on table in its case, or otherwise supported on your lap.

I recall an Apple ad a few years back where someone is watching a feature film on their iPad, on the sofa. They're holding the iPad in one hand, in the air, unsupported. It's completely unrealistic. Nobody does that. You might get through the trailer, but then you'd have urge to place iPad on table.

          • @cerealJay: Definitely true, it is preferable not to hold it up for too long. I’ve found the 11 inch is actually fine to do it for longer periods of time, where the 12.9 was a bit too unwieldy and heavy to use without putting it down.

I work in the construction industry, so reviewing and marking up technical drawings is common on the go, and is incredibly useful to have a tool that enables you to take photos, add into notes, save and send data and use applications live. The Surface Pro is also fantastic for this use case, but is also heavier and the battery life isn’t as good in my experience.

Each to their own, but I’d certainly recommend the iPad Pro 11. I’m glad I purchased it.

This isn’t really the correct question. It should be will the new iPad Pro be a revolutionary product that will blow out the 2020 iPad Pro out of the water or will be be an incremental improvement that will nevertheless result in a discount on 2020 making it a great buy for essentially the same product.

      • The new iPad Pro that's rumored for 2021 appears to be 12.9" only.

Perhaps Apple is keeping the 11" to the "Air" line and only having 12.9" for the "Pro" line?

Is it possible to use external ssd without additional power?

  • Not sure if this includes 10% GST for import tax purposes, given it’s over $1,000. If liable to pay the 10%, this wouldn’t be a deal.

    • Don’t you now pay this on all import even under $1,000?

      • That we do. Thanks to Gerry.

      • +1

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the online retailer collect gst for under 1k and customs collect off recipient address for over 1k items?
So with this, Toby isn’t collecting and charging gst?

    • You pay GST on all imported now, even if it was below $1000.

      • That's not entirely true. For grey imports it's up to the international store to charge you GST. Almost all of them don't and thus no GST has been paid.

  • Overseas model?

  • ..ok can someone clarify how to interpret these guys..as in
    1. Tobydeals ='To buy' deals or
    2. Toby as in Toby Maguire (the Spiderman)

  • -2

Not a good deal. You can get a brand new iPad Air for $1029 that’s 256gb and has a A14 processor, which is faster than the one in this iPad Pro.

I don’t see how anyone could ‘need’ those ‘Pro’ features to justify buying a 2-year old processor at almost the same price. Who would need a dual camera or lidar in an iPad?! No one takes photos using an iPad.

And the 120 hertz display isn’t 120 all the time…. it drops down to save battery when needed. So 60 in the iPad Air is actually fine for 99% of people’s usage.

    • you tell a convincing story, any other differences?

      • Face ID I suppose. The iPad Pro has Face ID. But personally I prefer the Touch ID in the power button on the iPad Air.

    • Agree, Pro is only for those who need 12.9"

    • 4 speakers on my older iPad Pro is so much better for media use which is my main purpose of my iPad. Imagine watching videos and audio only comes out of the right (or left) side.

      • I have the iPad Air and audio comes out of both sides of it.

        • Guess that was for the last gen airs. Maybe time to pick up an air then.

      • you're right, it only has 2 speakers and the Pro speakers are much better. Guess outside the cameras, the key differences are the 120hz screen, 4 speakers and face ID.

    • A14 processor is only half of the story. iPad Pro has an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU, iPad Air only has a 6-core CPU, and a 4-core GPU.

      • iPad Air performs better than the iPad Pro in single core tasks, whereas the iPad Pro slightly outperforms the iPad Air in multi core: https://www.macrumors.com/2020/10/03/a14-ipad-air-benchmarks…

Most people won’t notice a difference unless they’re doing hardcore graphics intensive tasks a lot. In fact, the iPad Air will be faster for most people for the tasks they use it for.

I placed an order one month ago and still haven't received it. The service is terrible. My most disappointing online shopping experience ever. Will never do that again.

  • I'm thinking a 256gb iPad Pro 11". Worth it to do the Officeworks price beat against Mediaform, or wait the 4 weeks for black friday? (Not fussed on saving cash vs apple store gift card, since I'd immediately spend it on a magic keyboard cover).

    • Edit: Damn, 256gb now sold out at Mediaform.

  • Same specs HK dollar $6,399 = $1,176 AUD.

    Australian price $1,329.

    Why, Apple?? Why tf?

    • Unfortunately have to add GST of 10%, ($1176* 1.1 = $1294) and shipping to Aus is dearer than almost anywhere else in the world as we’re so far away. With currency fluctuations it’s about the same, though I still reckon the education prices would be better as the regular prices.

      • How much is the education price for the model in question?
