iPhone 7's get the latest iOS 14.

    • +6

iPhone 6s and later gets iOS 14

        • +9

Love my 6s. It shoots 4K video and loads all the apps fine.

        • +3

I’m on the 6s and can honestly use it for another year or two if it wasn’t for battery

        • +1

I love climbing the ladder of 6s

        • +5

6S works surprisingly well, as long as the battery is good. If slow, you may be experiencing throttling. Check Battery health.
IOS had not had the same degree of bloat in the last 5 years as Android.

        • +1

i still have 6s and still play pokemon go on it.

        • +4

The only issue I had with my 6s was terrible battery life. So got a XS hoping for a huge performance gain. But I feel like the 5-6 apps that I use on daily basis runs just as fine on the 6s. Maybe a tad bit faster app opening time on XS. Basically, the 6s ain’t as bad as you described for me and most others?

        • +5

The 6s is my main phone. I do everything on it. The battery life is indeed terrible so I need to charge it frequently or carry a power bank, but there’s nothing wrong with it otherwise. Certainly it’s no “antique typewriter”.

        • +5

Still rocking a 6S, just did a battery replacement in it last week too. It makes phone calls, messages, every app I want, amazing photos and videos. What else do people need from a phone?

          • @upsidedownlemon: Did you go through apple ($79 I think?) My wife's battery life is terrible and I'm thinking about switching it out.

            • +7

@JuryWheel: Might be time to replace your wife

            • @JuryWheel: You can go to any iPhone service / repair place. I was quoted $50 for mine at iDoc Repair

              • @the fig man: i was thinking that it would be best to go to apple since its only $30 or so more…

                • +2

@JuryWheel: I went through Apple (Chatswood Apple Store) when they were offering discounted battery replacements till the end of 2018. I expected the phone to have significantly better battery life afterwards, but I really didn't notice much difference at all. Obviously, the battery health meter was back to 100%, but the battery life and performance were pretty much the same. I was even sceptical as to whether they replaced the battery at all. So a bit of a disappointing experience and I'm not sure if I'd want to pay $79 for that again. My battery health is down to 86% now and the battery life is rubbish.

Also, the Apple Store needs several days to do the job, whereas most of those small shops and kiosks can do it in an hour or so.

                  • @ak47wong: oh man, i was secretly hoping a new battery would bring it back to life!Maybe ill start with a factory reset first…

                    • @JuryWheel: I actually went back to the Apple Store a few months later to complain about the battery life not having improved. They also suggested a factory reset…

      • Can you tell me how to get IOS 14 on iPhonr 6s. My is iOS12.4 only.

        • Pretty standard procedure. Head to settings>general>software updates and wait for it check for software updates. Then click on the install button when it becomes available :)

    • +2

IOS14 for a burner phone could be nice!
Buying any iphone more than 2-3 years old ( 3 major updates ) is wasting money as you can get better android options. even with 80% battery better to keep it in charge 247.

  • anyone had any experience with Boost refurbs before?

Bought a Galaxy S8 refurbed, bought the "good" condition as "excellent" was OOS. Had one scuffed area on back of phone but apart from this was in fantastic condition. Very light surface scratches on screen but only noticeable shining a light at an angle with the screen off. Battery life is great, no issues so far (bought 4 months ago). Also came with a $30 1 month Sim, charger and a nice Boost box (not original box). Would buy again.

  • -4

It costs $200 2 years ago refurbished as i remember

    • +4

      Proof?

      • -3

I was buying an x and they had 7s for refurb at 200 a pop. Just a used iPhone 7 in moderate condition

        • +1

          This is excellent condition

          • -1

@sween64: You can get excellent for 250-350 back then. Also this is 7 not 7 plus

  • +4

So they don't replace the old battery?

    • +6

according to their 72-point check table written in the PDF file, one of the targets is at least 80 percent battery life. So I don't think you should expect a shiny new battery.

      • +6

80% is still poor, 90% is preferred for second hand phones

        • +4

I agree, i have an old samsung with almost 1000 recharges and accubattery still estimates 84% battery. I can only imagine what 80% would be like that too on an old mode iphone which already had poor batteries.

        • +2

Considering I was having random reboot issues at 81% health on my iPhone SE I sure as hell wouldn’t be buying a phone that may only be starting g with 80% out of the box.

If it had Apple warranty, sure, it not this.

    • +1

so roll of the dice as to what battery health you get

    • I've had an 80% 6s. Lasted half a work day before needing a charge.

  • -1

Get an SE with latest processor.

    • +14

      $679 vs $259 yeah nah

      • -3

It’ll be night and day in terms of performance. The phone will last years longer too.

        • +6

not if you need something for the kids to wreck anyway. this is an excellent stop gap at a price point where the SE would be cheaper by the time this ones break (hopefully this one lasts for another years time)

there is no need to 'chase' that performance when there is no immediate need. I would get this for the kids and with the savings, i would get the new 12 pro max for myself. :)

        • +3

not denying that. but you're comparing a new phone to one that's a few years old. come on.

    • +4

Not comparable price points, be realistic.

    • +13

      Lol wtf

      • -5

Hold firm against not supporting them? I do. No more cheap china junk for me

        • +1

Just out of curiosity - Who are you referring to as “them”? Apple, boost, coles, Alegre or someone else?

          • -7

@hashtagbargain: Them is = CHII NAR

            • -2

@[Deactivated]: Why so many negs? Ok, you enjoy the CHI NAR dictatorship who you take you lot by the balls

              Not me!

              • +4

@[Deactivated]: Probably because, unless you are working on a TRS80 or CPM, your computer probably was made in China.

                Likewise your current phone…

    • +1

100% a troll. I checked this person's comment history and all their comments get negged to death basically

    • … it's a used product… how are you supporting China?

    • You have to be a troll if you call iPhones “cheap China junk”

      • +1

apparently they're an Apple fanboy/girl.. and now they're hating on Apple for being "cheap junk" made in China. Hypocrisy at it's finest 😂

      • I think OP (of comment) just deleted their account 😂

        • +2

they possibly imploded when they went through their house and realised pretty much everything was made in China. including the modem used to connect them to the internet lol

  • +7

"80%" Battery Health is really, really poor. If you actually use your phone, then you will be carrying a power bank with you at all times.

(Source: my main phone until last week was an iPhone SE/16 with 1483 cycles and "85%" health.)

    • +2

Agreed, I had a 7 Plus with 82% battery and it wouldn't last the day with regular use.
I've now got an XS with 92% and it lasts much better.
I'd say anything over 90% for a refurb is excellent.

      • +1

Agreed. Anything below 90% battery wear and it will start to throttle or crash under load.
At least that was the experience on my 6S.

    • +2

Pretty easy to DIY change on those, especially after the first one. I put in 2 or 3 new batteries in mine. Even compared to 90%, a new battery is much better. And only like $20

      • every iphone from 4 onwards is rather straightforward if you have the tools and have opened up phones before

      • Can you tell me where you got the $20 battery please? Heaps on eBay but I would prefer to buy from someone somebody has used. I can change it as I have the tools and they send them anyway.

        • ebay, just kinda pick whatever. I got this one which seemed pretty good when i got it

          and less than $20 woohoo

  • not worthing as battery degraded. You may need a new battery, add extra cost

  • +3

would buy if it was $299 and an iphone 8….

    • Wait for another two years and you will get it.

  • Features: iOS 10.0.1 upgradable to iOS 14

I imagine it would come with a version of iOS 13 or maybe even 14 depending when it was refurb'd

72 Point check: Battery Life - 80% of original capacity

I'd guess greater than or equal to 80%

  • +2

80% battery sounds pretty sketchy… i'd factor in a battery replacement into your costs if you were keen on this.

    • or maybe a permanent powerpack

  • +10

    Battery Replacement Costs

    $79 @ Apple
    $80 @ EB Mobile
    Free DIY + $53 battery

Not intended to be the cheapest prices but just a quick guide as what to expect. Personally I'd go with the $79 Apple option or a decent powerbank for $30.

    • +2

I'd recommend the replacement at Apple as well. If somethings not right with the battery swap, apple will replace your device for the battery replacement cost… and the new phone comes with 2 years of apple warranty!

Source: have had 2 devices replaced this way.

    • +1

Definitely get it replaced by Apple. It’s the only way to be sure of getting a genuine Apple battery.

    • thanks - alternatively buy/return/exchange refurb until/unless you receive one with 90% capacity, or perhaps request such if exchanging?

      • +1

        Too much effort.

        • returning is too much effort to avoid an extra 31% charge for a new Apple battery?

          • +1

@tonester: I’m not sure what figures you are using. The best you could hope is to go from 80% to 100% which is an increase of 25%.

How many exchanges would you be willing/able to do at Coles?

            • @sween64: $79 battery is 31% more on top of $259 phone

buy at Coles, but return/exchange via Australia Post

              • @tonester: Ahhh. I read charge as battery capacity not cost. I get it now.

I’d do it once if I got a battery with 80%, but not more times than that and not if I got a battery with 90% or higher.

  • +2

I am interested in buying this iPhone 7 as a replacement for my iPhone 3GS. My iPhone 3GS only operates on 3G and can no longer connect to shopping mall free WiFi. As well, my iPhone 3GS cannot download the latest Apps and is slow. The pros is that I received it as a gift from my daughter, as she was too embarrassed to be seen with it. It is is also small to carry.

The cons of buying a iPhone 7 are the cost, the 80% battery, the fingerprint sensor, the size and the need for new charging cable in the car.

    • +3

Is this a troll post? 3GS lol

      • +6

That’s not nice. Not everyone can afford new stuff.

    • +1

The worse condition is 80% battery which is likely far better than a 3GS wear level.
You don’t have to use the finger print sensor though I find it much better than Inputting the 4 digit pin everytime
A lightning charging cable is only a few bucks

    • +2

Why don’t you like the fingerprint sensor? It’s quick and works. Combined with a password manager makes logging in to everything awesome.

If you don’t want the size of the 7 you could get an SE 1st gen second hand. $149

      • +2

The fingerprint sensor does not work with my fingers. After years of lifting heavy hot objects, my wife and I no longer have finger prints. It creates problems obtaining visas, as the finger print readers cannot record our finger prints.

If I bought a iPhone 7, I would not use the finger print reader and rely on a PIN only.

        • +9

You and your wife would make good thieves with no fingerprints. Plus the 3GS would be a good burner phone.

I feel your pain though because I can't use the face unlock on my phone anymore, I've had too many hot showers.

        • +1

You wouldn’t be the first. Fingerprints do wear out for some people. It can be annoying when it (biometric check in) fails at the custom and you have to join the “special” queue. Although probably not mentioned here, the 7 is the first water resistant iPhone. So it’s an objectively practical upgrade from the 3GS.

    • -1

      Somebody is stuck in 2007

    • If I were kirrider1, I’d get the iPhone 7 and give the 3GS to my missus, Wilma.

  • +2

Honestly if the camera quality is good enough for you, then an iPhone 6s/7/8 is still a bloody great option these days. I got a secondhand 6s off a friend a couple years ago and I'm amazed at how snappy and fluid it feels. Plus iOS14 as mentioned.

For me though, the camera is the main reason why I stick with Pixels

    • i've not been following the recent pixel entries… do they still get the unlimited raw uploads?

      • +1

Pretty sure that ended after pixel 3.

From p4 onwards they were only giving 3 months subscription to Google One (which has 100gb)

And even for p3 owners, they are now only covered until Jan 2022

        https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/15/20915594/google-pixel-4-…

        • +1

Correct. Pixel3 was the last with free original quality uploads up to end of next year

        • +1

Thanks. I have the gsuite which gives me some space but I’ve not looked if I can tie it into a pixel or I needed a separate subscription.

Would be really nice if someone made a cross platform so that iPhone or pixels can upload and download to a single cloud storage. Having to maintain separate subs are mad.

  • I'm curious to try an apple phone some day. But I will be wanting a bigger display. Maybe next year's SE version, if it ticks all the right boxes.
