Chromecast with Google TV (2020) $93.94 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi Solutions (Membership Required)

780

The cheapest I can find in Australia, the new Chromecast with Google TV.

I'll be cashing in my Vodafone TV for this one. I'll mainly be using it for Plex and Kodi.

Delivery is $10 which kills the deal, but you can pick up from your local store.

  • can anyone confirm that hulu works on this box? i sideloaded it on the VTV but the video keep freezing every 5 seconds or so. can cast to it ok, but thats a hassle

Loving this device. I bought the Ethernet adapter as well and I can stream games to it via Moonlight in 4K to my TV with no perceptible lag - only done Genshin Impact with it so far though. Connected my PS4 controller directly to the Chromecast over Bluetooth.

The only reason for me to get a Shield Pro now is the 4K upscaling - not really necessary.

    • Never heard of Moonlight, but always wanted a way to stream PC games to the TV in the lounge (much more comfy to play there).

I'll have to look into this, thanks for your comment!

        5m HDMI cable from officeworks, $9 ;)
Not sure how well it does HDMI but is apparently a decent cable

        • Not sure it will be long enough, unless I break a hole in the wall to feed it through 😆

          • @mangobango: Hey mangobango.

Get the "Monoprice Select Series" HDMI cable from Amazon AU. under $20 for 30 feet (can be longer). I can't remember where I read it, but I did read that they are one of the few working longer distance HDMI cables. Can confirm the 30ft version works well.

That might negate the issue with the wall?

            • @spendybeans: Possibly! But then that's just a very long cable running along my house.

I've already got a Vodafone TV so should be able to try this streaming stuff out first and see how it plays.

              • @mangobango: I hear you.

It entirely depends on the games you want to play though. If you go wireless, there's no getting around that there is some latency. If it's a game that's ok with some latency, it's fine.

                • @spendybeans: Oh yeah for sure. Hopefully latency isn't too bad, but for more casual gaming it should be alright.

Wouldn't trust it enough for competitive gaming or anything.

                  • @mangobango: Yeah def not for competitive but even for things like tight-control platformers etc. I only know this because I tried recently. I ended up with a HDMI cable running on my floor :)

                    • @spendybeans: It works great for me with both PC and Chromecast connected over Ethernet. Wi-Fi AC had too much lag. Did you use Gamestream with Ethernet?

                      • @khell: I've tried Gamestream and Steamlink, both over ethernet. It's not a massive amount of latency, but it's enough to make games like Spelunky just not playable, given how precise they need to be and how throw-the-controller frustrating it is when you die. Certain games 100% fine. But I've chatted with people (even on OzB) that won't even use a wireless controller because of the latency on some games.. there's just no getting around that it won't stream as well as it'll run natively, especially since the TV still needs to decode it.

Most games it'd be fine I'm sure, but the ones I've been playing, I can't stand it.

                        • +1

@spendybeans: Yeah that's fair. Moonlight records around 20-27ms average latency for me.

                          • @khell: I'll give it a crack!

My original plan was to get a Shield Pro but now I'm not sure… something like newer Chromecast might do the trick (I have a Chromecast Ultra)

                      • @khell: How did you manage to connect to wifi ac? I bought it yesterday, it can't see 5ghz frequency. I tried to manually add the network but no luck, connected to 2.4ghz as it just sees 2.4ghz only…. Well , a quick search on the google shows that a lot of people having this issue. Might have to return it if the issue is not fixed. Xiaomi box would have been better choice I guess or mecool ( though netflix HD is not supported )
On th side note, I think my vtv is better. Sadly no more vtv's.
                        Thanks

It's great! It implements the same Nvidia Gamestream protocol used by the Shield (so you need a semi-recent Nvidia card for it to work), but work it does. I'm really impressed by it.

        • I think I've got a 1660 in mine so should be good then :)

I tried Moonlight on my phone last night (test run before I get the Chromecast) and wow, works perfectly! Also streamed Genshin Impact and no delay/issues whatsoever. Can't thank you enough for mentioning this app!

      • I know you can run emulators/apps and connect gamepad controllers directly to the google tv (and as i did with built in android tv), but didn't see the option at the pc end for game mode - is that the windows 10 settings somewhere? I noticed you can enable it on the device.

My pc is quite close to the telly so cable is actually fine at the moment. Obviously better using monitor but racing games like Forzea Horizon work well with control pad.

        • You mean Gamestream? It's an option you enable inside Geforce Experience. Checkout the Moonlight documentation on Github, it explains everything.

          • @khell: ok, thanks for that, all new to me built a new gaming pc this year after about 10y ha

FYI Google TV + 6 month Netflix credit worth $96 for $139 is good value, no white available and delivery times ate long (coming in Dec for me)

shame they didn't go for 4k plan since Google Tv supports 4k

Not jumping on any new google service after the treatment of google play music.

How is google guaranteeing their services going forward?

    • Agree, I was more than happy with it (apart from recent listening history can vary depending on which device).
Not really impressed with youtube music and don't see the point of it - there isn't even a cast icon/button on the PC website/app. Fail!
Have got Tidal (argentina) which works out great, just the UI is different again but alright for MQA and if you know what you want. It's pretty good overall but $24/m is a bit much.

  • What are peoples thoughts on how low this will go?

The 4k version didn't seem to drop lower than $79. I am still on a Chromecast 2 and will be buying this but not sure how long I should wait.

    • USD49 in the States when launched, so $70 seems like a reasonable possible future price.

      • $50 au seems bout right

I heard of someone walking into JB and getting one for $91.. doesn't hurt to ask for a deal.
Big W has 10% off all day but couldn't see it on their site.
Have ordered the bundle, not due till end of the month - not sure what the hold up is or if they will change t&c's by then - people are returning the device and get to keep/use the NF credit. May do the same and get one sooner perhaps.

My current 2015 Bravia Android TV is alright but can't power it off through Google home- older TVs may not be supported but wondering if it could if the GTV HDMI is plugged into the ARC port? Either way this may not be supported forever and would be a more snappy experience from what i gather. Also couldn't get it to play something like on the promo not support on Android TV, so there is a definite difference.

    Cheers,

    • I got mine for $91 from TGG

      • how?

        • Asked instore, told them I normally order on TGG commercial store but it wasn’t on there (I guess because it was brand new at the time). They checked their system and said the lowest they can do it for is $91

      • TGG couldn't do $91 for me, walked into JBhifi and got them price matched to commercial price of $91.05 in no time. No issues.
On th side note, I think my vtv is better. Sadly no more vtv's.

My GTV can power off my 2008 Sony TV, couldn't believe it.

      • Sweet sounds good
Basic voice commands be handy to turn stuff on and off. The video & tv app remote is still handy and comprehensive

      • guess it can turn on if u power it via adaptor instead of TV USB port

        • It has to be powered by adaptor, needs too much power for USB port.
My GTV can turn on my tv from standby as well.

        • powering the tv on/off and using the HDMI ARC input all works fine, bluetooth seems to have minor sync issues when i run it to a yamaha BT receiver to my DAC and powered speakers.

I'm thinking to just keep those for music and perhaps get a decent yet simple sound bar for tv use, as most will be easily better than tv speakers. mainly would like it all to work with the google tv remote. My tv only has an optical out so looking for recommendations for a sound bar with optical in, then assume the google remote will do the volume? it's a Sony TV (2015 bravia android tv), i'd be happy with Yamaha soundbar or similar that is decent but not top end.

          Thanks,

I may be going about it the wrong way using optical out from TV.
Sounds like GTV can output Dolby Atmos so as long as netflix/amazon triggers it I should look for a soundbar with that spec as well, and output to the tv as a final display i guess? I suppose you'd need the HD netflix plan.

  • I still have not received the 15% google credit from Google TV pre-order

Anyone got the credit from google?

    • Got mine yesterday, ordered Chromecast on Oct 5.

      • Got mine today, ordered Oct 15th

    • Ordered 9th October, nothing yet.

  • 4k?

    • yes

  • Thanks but seems easier and more accessible to buy JB vouchers with 5% off for $95

  • Anyone know how this goes as a direct play Plex client? I have my Plex server on an RPi 4 so I only do direct play for streaming unless it's an SD/720p file.

Can you install third party apks on this one?

    • +1

Yes very easy to side load, plenty of YouTube tutorials

      • Thanks. I was wondering if Google blocked it on this device. I'm using this feature on MiBox 3.

  • Can you plug this into the USB port on the TV for power? I am hearing you have to plug it into a power point.

    • Yes it must be plugged in to a power point. Tv USB not enough power.

      • Thanks for confirming

        • -2

It has its own battery pack.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: You mean power supply (not battery pack) I assume.

            • @Borg: A battery pack is attached via a cable. YouTube videos show all.

  • Can you watch nba league pass (when purchased using vpn) on these?

  • Could someone do me a huge favour. I have an old Denon Receiver that I would like to use with my setup. When configuring the buttons on the remote, is the Denon AVR-3805 available in the list of receivers?

  • bought one yesterday for $99 from jb :(
in quarantine so can't even return :'(

EDIT: NO AAA batteries are included in the in box. I just noticed when I opened after starting quarantine.

    • +1

there were batteries in my GTV box

      • thanks, might check again in the box. may be under documentation.

    • +1

Definitely batteries, and they match the colour of the device too - just for all the times you open up your remote.

  • $95.38 for my previous work place login

  • What are its advantages over chromecast ultra and smart tv?

    • this has internal storage so u can install apps. Hoping I can install games on this soon

  • Got one yesterday at Harvey Norman for $92… Just a quick 1 minute haggle..:-)

  • Might wait and see what black friday has to offer. Cashed in my Vodafone tv so hopefully there's an even better deal soon.

  • Likewise, picked one up for $92 as above but at JB, doesn't hurt to ask. That must be the best anyone can sell for but happy with that.
ps do you allow saving audio - no doubt the thing will work better if you do

  • For those who have a Kogan TV, which brand of TV do you use to enable to google tv remote to work?

    • Not sure about Kogan, but for my JVC none of the JVC options worked but Soniq did. Just cycle through the popular ones and I'd say one will work. That's what I did.

  • Does anyone have a smart powerboard or plug setup for Google TV?
Wondering if on standby it powers 'slave' devices off ie tv & soundbar?
My setup is GTV -> Soundbar via HDMI input -> TV via HDMI (ARC).
Not really sure how much power they all use on standby but nice being able to grab either the GTV or TV remote and everything fires up.
Probably easiest to have them always-on standby i guess? Smart plug with timers etc be alright, prob not a great deal of power we're talking about
