  • Wish it was B550 or alternatively MSI releases 5000s update faster than Jan 2021 (like Gigabyte did) for B450s

    • What's advantage of B550?

      • +2

PCIe 4.0 support and Ryzen 5000 out of box support

      • +4

PCIe gen 4 support from CPU (not blocked by AMD through BIOS). B450/X470 technically can do most of that (via CPU), but AMD blocked it at the BIOS microcode level. While some boards had that support for 3000 series CPUs in the very first BIOS version, the microcode updates from AMD later on are too important so it is very unlikely one would use the very old BIOS version to do that. AMD will definitely completely locks it for older chipsets for 5000 series CPUs.

Another thing is AMD will only provide BIOS micro code support for 5000 series CPU for X470, B450 etc… next year.

So, if you want to use a 5000 series CPU, you are really better off getting B550 or X570 based motherboard.

        • I got a X570 master waiting on 5900x to be delivered.
Upon assembly,do I need to update the MB?
          It is my first build!

          • @Mandalorian: You might, you might not. Depends on when that particular board was manufactured
It's got Q-flash plus though so at least you're not going to be stuck needing a different CPU to install the update

    • Do you know the ETA for bios updates for gigabyte boards? I can't find a source anywhere

      • AMD wont be releasing BIOS to OEMs till 2021.

        • I was referring to someone above that said Gigabyte already released a BIOS update for zen3.

Had a look and there does seem to be quite a few beta bioses for Asus/Gigabyte floating around (specifically on HKEPC). Not sure if they're credible

      • I saw it couple of days ago, looks like they removed it but the files are still on the server:

Are you serious?! Just paid $150 for this the other day from CPL….

Since they havent posted it yet, maybe I should get a refund and buy it here?

    • +29

      10 bucks are you serious

      • +2

Well yes, that's why I posted it.

Getting an update from the original place of purchase. If they won't be able to send within a week, will cancel and get this instead. With Amazon Prime, will arive by Wednesday!

    • +4

i tried that with shopping express once and they refunded me the amount for the item but said oh we shipped it and kept the shipping cost (they hadnt shipped it) so i complained and they said ok next time we give you free shipping… i couldnt be arsed arguing for $10 … so i just dont buy from them anymore.

    • +2

get a price protection credit card

      • I’ve got a 28 Degrees with price protection and I know Coles used to offer it, but are there any cards currently available to apply for that have price protection ?

        • idk, i just have 28 Degrees as well

  • +2

Great board. I don't do any over clocking but I leave my 3900x running under full load (100% across all 24 threads) for days on end.

And cheaper than I paid, pre covid.

    • what are you doing to run all cores at 100%, any stability or heat issues?

  • +4

waiting for b550 itx board at a good price..

    • +2

      Same, or even b450.

    • +1

Hoping the Gigabyte B550I falls below $300 soon. Not much love for ITX though :(

  • This will probably need a BIOS update if you're going to be using it with a 5000 series CPU

    • +3

      thats not available till January

dont buy a b450 board if you are planning to pair it with 5000 series

    • +1

It has flash back thingie, dont need a CPU installed, maybe not even ram, flash the BIOS anyway

  • Static Ice shows results from around $144-$149; most would not include delivery in the price; so this is a good bargain. Good product also. Just make sure it fits your needs before purchasing :)

    • +3

If you dont live this stuff, lately its getting very confusing keeping up with 'fits your needs' and 'what works with what and what doesnt work'..
      All parts of the computer

Used to be simple with less options

      • +1

I believe I watched a TED talk about someone who went to the store to buy jeans, walked out a couple hours later with the best fitting jeans he's ever had, but was extremely unsatisfied and exhausted from the long process of figuring out which one to get. He was much happier when there was 1 option and you know exactly what you are getting. I believe the talk was about the inverse relationship between number of choices, and the likelihood of someone completing a purchase (or something like that).

  • +1

Anybody know of any processor deals to go with this? I've noticed prices of Ryzen seem to be going up lately?

  • Wonder if I should grab this and hope 3900x drops during BF - my home server needs an upgrade!

  • +2

I have this board. The only issue I have is it does not have 5vARGB header. It only has 12vRGB header. No rainbow effect :(

  • +2

To anyone wondering if B450 boards support Ryzen 5000 series. There is, ASUS and Gigabyte got their B450s BIOS updated.

  • This or the X470 posted in other deal?

  • +4

I have this board. Two small drawbacks:
    - no onboard wifi
    - got 2 M.2 SSD slots, but one of them is shared with the PCIex4 slot

  • +2

    I'm currently using this board.
It's been performing well and is easy to work with.

It's a very good option at this price.

No WiFi or Bluetooth… I'm using a TP-link AC1900 Dual Band High Gain Wireless USB Adapter.

Second NVMe slot is throttled due to the PCEe x 4 - But, it's still very fast for regular users. I've put a WD Blue SN550 into it and it is serving well as a "Fast" Game Library.

    • +1

Also as I pointed above, you can only choose one — PCIe x 4 slot or the second M.2 SSD…

  • Info for people getting or having this: you can change the LED colors or disable them completely by installing the MSI DragonCentre software

  • should i bother upgrading my b450-i rog strix for a 5900x, seems like these 40a power stages are beefy enough, even from testing my oc'd 4.3GHz 3900x. but i dont run it oc'd due to single core performance loss.

    • No, not unless you get a X570 board with it (or at least B550). However, if you have some spare cash and simply cannot resist how good 5900X is based on the reviews, then might as well.

B450 boards will be second class citizens when it comes to BIOS upgrades again. Been through that for 3000 series CPUs.

It's a bit sad that we all get excited with 19% IPC improvement for desktop CPU.

  • Would this be better over say the lower end mATX B550 boards? Say something like the ASRock Pro4 for $30 more?

  • +1

Found it for $125 + $9.99 at eBay (Techfast) OzBargain

  • It has gone up to $151+ on Amazon.
