    Awesome was waiting for this.

Got one from Officeworks previously and great device!

  • +3

No HD Audio passthrough meaning lossless DTS-MA HD and Dolby TrueHD (with or without Atmos) won't work, only DTS, DD, DD+ and DD+Atmos.

Shame because this would be a decent (cheaper) alternative to the Nvidia Shield otherwise.

    • That's my issue too, more so because I use it with a projector so I'd take any audio at this point.. I'm going to try get a powered OTG adaptor and see if it'll pickup my dac via USB as all other android devices do.

    • +1

I'm using as source into soundbar then hdmi arc to telly (not a new DD/Atoms one). Assume DD Atmos etc formats would work if the soundbar has it? Would probably need to upgrade to a Netflix HD subscription? Doubt you'd tell much difference, it's not true 5.1 like a surround system (was looking at the Samsung Samsung Q70T soundbar).

It's still a lot snappier using the Google TV than the built in Android OS in my 2015 Bravia, plus gain voice control and can power the device off properly. With the netflix credit only $45 anyway.

Sounds like some people need a good AVR if they want a perfect cinema experience.

Ps. Paid $92 not sure if it's worth lodging a $4 shoppers protection

Are you actually able to Stream Free to Air channel’s 🤷‍♀️ Or do you still need to go through the normal channel App

    • +7

Matt Huisman has a few different methods of streaming live FTA, via Kodi or Live Channels:

      https://www.matthuisman.nz/2017/08/au-freeview-kodi-add-on.h…

      https://www.matthuisman.nz/2017/08/kodi-freeview-au-iptv-set…

      https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/01/live-au-iptv-channels-on-…

…plus each of the FTA apps have a live TV section.

      • This is how we watch all FTA TV. Super smooth

        • Which of those methods above are the easiest?

Handy having HDMI ARC with a soundbar as you can use the TVs remote also when actually watching free to air, but may as well stream and just use the google remote :P

      • Thanks mate appreciate it, that also means I could run kodi on my synology🤔 and not buy the stick at all, I need to check that out

    • 7Plus, 9Now, 10Play, SBS, and iVew are all available.

I know that the 7, 9, and 10 have live TV options

      • I have decent broadband though terrible TV reception. Is this my best option? Is it hassle free compared to using normal tv?

Tv booster hasn't helped much and have tried to fix through real estate.

        • The flat I moved into has no tv cable points, so weird but then I thought hang on I never watch normal tv anyway! I installed those apps mentioned above for the one offs like sporting events that you still need FTA for and it works flawlessly. Nobody would know its via the internet (unless the net went down that is).

And internet here sucks but it still works flawlessly.

    • Please note the Live Channels app as shown by Matt Huisman does NOT work properly on this Chromecast, once you install the app and TvIRL the live channels app is not selectable in the menu, and you can only open it via:

1.Voice command through Google assistant ("open live channels app")
      2. Getting a launcher app (such as Mix App) which requires an extra click to get into the app.

This was super frustrating, as it works perfectly on the shield and is super quick at channel surfing.

    • The freeview FV app should do the trick

  • Can you cast audio to a speaker? Or does it have to play audio through the tv?

    • Why not use Bluetooth?

      • Glad I bought my Chromecast Audio when I did, heaps better. Cleaner, no phone sounds or interruptions, stream it all up, turn off computer etc

      • Because I want to see the album art on the screen and have the sound come from my Home Max.

I'm sorted for casting music.. this is just being a bit more subtle.

  • This or the Xiaomi mibox?

    • +4

I got both. They are quite similar. For me, the Chromecast takes longer to load the interface page when turning on. Also, the Chromecast doesn't have a USB port so have to do some workarounds to load apk files.

      • Good point about the sideloads. What methods do you use or recommend?

        • +1

I just use File Commander. It can download apk files from Google drive or receive files from PC/mobile phones.

  • +4

Why is this better than the old chrome cast?

    • +6

It's the latest model, it has a remote control and no need to cast from phone. It isn't really a ChromeCast anymore it's an Android TV dongle

      • Can you cast from website like how i can cast from my phone?

        • +1

Yep, it can still act as a regular Chromecast.

      • If you purchase this, what do you do to your old version chromecast?

        • +1

Sell it or gift to someone here

        • I still got the original one, couldn't get it to connect last time tried but then again may have forgotten to plug into mains. Thought that version worked from tv usb port. wouldn't be worth anything but good to take to hotels on travels works half the time ha

  • +3

Any advantages over chromecast ultra and having smart tv?

    • Probably not, but it's just cleaner having it all in one library. It collates everything into one catalogue for you so you don't need to browse all the streaming services you have.

    • +7

Think of the CCGTV as a combination of chromecast ultra + an android tv box (2GB ram, 8GB storage), some advantages:

      • You can use CCGTV without the need of another device (remote control provided)
      • You can download apps directly onto the device and play it directly from there (not all apps are chromecast-enabled, but having the ability to install the app on the device will bypass this limitation)
      • Ability to install VPN (e.g. Surfshark, ExpressVPN, NordVPN). It is also possible to sideload apps which are not found on the Playstore

I'm contemplating getting one mainly because of the ability to install VPN to access other countries' Netflix library

      • I am also interest for the same reason. Need to see some review on how it works

  • I just wanna know can u play nba league pass when league pass is purchased using vpn

    • +1

Should be able to as the NBA app is available from the playstore. As eggaz mentioned above, it's an Android TV.

    • +1

Yes you don't need to play league pass on vpn, only during sign up. Unless you got greedy and went with India in which case I'm sorry.

There're still reasons to cast your games to the Chromecast via the league pass app tho. From what I've tested, this is one of the few ways that multiple devices can watch games at the same time with the same login. Important for people who shares one paid subscription ie me.

  • +5

Go to woolies for the gift cards that give 10% bonus and pay with those :)

  • +11

If you intend to use or already use Netflix you can get a Chromecast google tv bundle from Google store with Netflix for $139.99 and get a 6 month standard package credit. Applies to existing Netflix accounts as well. 6 months is a $95.94 value which brings the price down to $44.05 for this set up

    • +2

I believe there is a pretty long wait for the chromecast if you go this route.

      • I ordered it today and paid said in stock ?

        • +3

I ordered mine weeks ago, it still hasn't shipped

          • @Matt P: Cheers Matt. I have a regular Chromecast I'll just have to wait … Dang

            • +1

@Capitalshark: Ordered mine about the 9th of October and arrived yesterday with the Netflix code (its not a code, when you set up the box it knows which one you bought and emails you the code)

              • +3

@kulprit: Correct and one can apply the code to "ANY" Netflix account and is not restricted to the device nor the account you use when setting up the device.
Just noting this as it seems to be a question asked a lot.

                • +1

@Borg: You can also redeem up to 3 codes on a single netflix account for anyone wondering

                  • @Eggsperential: Hope to redeem the three codes? So would that make 18 months instead of 6?

                • @Borg: will it work even if i'm billed via itunes?

              • @kulprit: I'm guessing the code doesn't work on family membership? Is. 6months of 4 users?

                • @fufufu: No such thing as family membership on Netflix. You mean the hd Ultra plan?

The code just adds credit to your account, it doesn't matter what plan you are on.

                  • @kulprit: Sorry, yes the one that allows 4 screens to be watched at the same time. Can you please tell me how much the credit was? Thanks.

                    • +1

@fufufu: The Google Store says "includes six months of the Netflix standard two-screen streaming plan (total current value $95.94)", so if it were to be applied to a 4 screen plan, you'd get about 4.8 months?

          • @Matt P: I'm the same.

  • Does anyone know how to use VPN with these? To allow me to install / play Hulu, FuboTV, SlingTV. Or even just to allow casting from a browser streaming Hulu

    • same as the old way?

      • Router that supports OpenVPN configs
      • ExpressVPN account > Import location
      • Set router to bypass google DNS, and IP/MAC apply fulltime OpenVPN location to this device only

But if it is Android TV, you should jhust be able to install the VPN app… either way I'll find out when mine gets delivered

    • +1

I use the windscribe app and download hulu android tv (needs to be installed via google drive or similar). Works perfectly

      • My Hulu app on the Vodafone Android TV has terrible video stutter, seems to be common on the VTV and Mi Box S according to forums.

So no issues for you on the Google TV? If so I may pull the trigger!

        • +1

Had same issue with my VTV with the stuttering. Mi Box worked fine.

GoogleTV works fine also with Hulu. Pull the trigger

        • I didn't realise VTV had issues with Hulu as it works fine on mine, but yes works well on Google TV. Prime on my VTV is unusable due to stutter

          • +1

@Gmann: That's funny, I have exactly the opposite problem. I managed to fix the Prime stuttering on VTV by turning off Surround sound. (Settings->Sound->Never Use Surround Sound)

Obviously not an ideal fix but worked. Maybe the Google TV will fix both!

      • Where do you get Hulu and SlingTV that's compatible with Google TV. I just tried to install the Apple TV app for the Firestick and it didn't work!

        Appreciate it

        • +1

Not being rude or anything but Google is your friend here and the answers you seek are out there :-)

          • @Borg: Understand but there are a lot of incompatible APKs. Just wondering where the folks here got theirs' from.

    • +1

I use Getflix DNS on mine with no issues using Hulu, SlingTV, HBOmax etc.

      • Did you use an app for Getflix or change DNS on the router. Didn’t want to change DNS on the router if possible.

      • Does Getflix work ok with US Netflix?
I'm using DNS4ME on my Shield but Netflix detects the alternate DNS settings. I don't want to fluff around with updating DNS on my router…

        • Yeah. I found that Getflix is working with US Netflix. Although i rarely watch it.

    • +1

I use Surfshark and just had to install the app.

  • +1

Anyone having issue with 5ghz? Mine is not seeing 5ghz and thus connected to 2.4ghz only.

    • Seems to be a recent issue. People online have reported that changing your 5GHz network to use Channel 40 in your router has resolved the issue.

      • Thanks for the reply…This is something not everyone willing to do or don't know how to do.. it shouldn't be the issue at the first place… Looks like a glitch in the software.

        • Issue is only a couple of weeks old so I'd be expecting an update soon.

          • @Clear: Sometimes I feel that I should have bought xiaomi box ,due to the hassle of installing apps on this one and to increase the storage have to spend extra to buy usb hub with power delivery. But the only positive thing might be getting regular updates otherwise not really an advantage as having issues with 5ghz as well.

            • @koolchamp81: Horses for courses as they say. I am looking for something to purely stream. No need for storage and I have good 5Ghz coverage so this is perfect. And I would encourage everyone to consider their needs/use cases to determine what type of device best suits them whether it's a VTV, Xiaomi, Apple TV, nVidia, RPi, this etc.

I personally stream from consoles as well and still don't see why people pay for a nvidia shield which is same price as a console, but I'm sure it meets their use cases

              Just love the choice

      • +1

If you have accounts with any of those, you can buy instant egift cards from them.

Worse case scenario, you can get 3% via ShopBack giftcards.. surely everyone has a Shopback/Cashrewards account by now

      • You can open a Suncorp account easily online for free. No maintenance fee on it.

  • +2

I've been using mine since preorder and love it, it's very responsive and bundles everything nicely (perfect if you have you tube premium, Netflix, prime and Disney+: for trawling and recommending all at the same time).

The voice search / commands on the remote very handy too.

    • +1

I have all of these services and love the UX is content first.

    • +1

I am finding the remote is unable to control any of my home devices (lights etc). Can yours (if you have any)?
      ALSO
My Google Mini can't contol this device i.e. if I am playing Netflix, Kayo etc, I would usually say Hey Google, Pause, play etc.to save me grabbing the remote. It doesn't detect it which surprises me being a Google device and worked fine when using Chromecast 2. Any one else here have this issue?

      • +1

The remote has an IR blaster so turns on/off my older samsung telly. Huge bonus

        • It would be turning off because of CEC.

Your TV can be totally off, as soon as you cast to a plugged in Chromecast with CEC enabled, it can turn your TV on too, along with any other plugged in CEC device like a soundbar

          • @dsp26: Ah you're right about the turning on bit. But given it is an early model samsung telly i suspect it is actually turning it off via IR. No other device to date has been able to turn the tv off, including a later model samsung sound bar.

It also controls the volume on my telly which I assume is through the IR blaster.

            • @Eggsperential: CEC can do a lot of implemented properly and given Google is a software company I'd wager they've got as much as they can through.
Easiest way to check is to cover the IR with hand or a solid object and see if it still works.

On the old TV and CEC to my surprise Nintendo Switch has been able to turn on and switch to correct AV channel on many ancient hotel TVs for me over the years. It's a great feature to the point that I don't even need the TV remote and finish correct HDMI channel. Turn on switch and it takes care of turning the TV and switching to the right channel. It's magical.

  • Given it is Android I assume you can install the Foxtel Go app and stream from there?

    • at the moment its not in the play store and i havent been able to side load it

      • Not even via Aptoide/AptiodeTV?

  • Just the all-in-one remote is pretty much worth it.

Just the 4k HDR is pretty much worth it.

    You get both.

  • I just bought one and while it's great I hate that there are a lot of google movies that require me to pay to view on my dashboard which i can't get rid of. Kinda paranoid the kids will go and buy a bunch of shit

    Also no foxtel app btw

besides that the UI is nice and having a remote now is awesome

    • +1

The pay per view "ads" are part of their business model. The devices are sold at or below cost, then they reap the ongoing revenue from pay per view programming (including accidental purchases)!

But you can change the purchase authorisation settings to require authentication for each purchase. This will stop the kids from spending your $$.

    • +1

you can put a different launcher on which gets rid of all the ads and paid content

  • What USB type C hubs do you guys use?

Mainly aiming to plug in a hard drive for media playback.

  • +1

So the pink and blue ones are only available through google?

  • Worth getting just to stream a laptop to a tv? I'm trying to avoid Plex because it's not for me and I can't be bothered learning to use Plex just to teach someone even less tech savvy than I am.

Alternative device? Looking for basically plug and play here.

    • +1

For streaming from a PC or phone then a Gen2 Chomecast will be cheaper.

I use it with VLC, and then set the renderer to the Chromecast which is picked up automatically. Otherwise, if everything is basic h264 and in .MP4's then just open the videos in Chrome directly and cast from there.

I have to use Plex for casting x265 HEVC videos though - the Gen2 doesn't support them natively - and Plex was the simplest way to get realtime transcoding working.
