Note that secondary nodes use a broken, cracked encryption standard for the WIFI password with no way to fix it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/569773

Mod Edit: See latest comment here for further/updated information.

    • Great job sharing that with people.

    • +3

What's worse is they seem to have no interest in fixing it. Tenda = poor security!

    • Thanks for sharing. Might check around the BlackFriday/CyberMonday sales for a new WiFi mesh to replace my current MW3 set.

    • Thanks for lookin out for us because wtf is that. Good to know I should spend my money elsewhere. They don't even want to fix it.

    • +3

I believe deals for this product deserve a neg due to this major fault.

      • +1

I agree. I've just cancelled my Amazon order.

      • +1

        Agreed. Not fit for purpose.

        • +1

I agree to this. Was about to buy one when a fellow OzBargainer educated me when I posted the deal.

    • ^ Comments like this saved me from buying Tenda

So I went through it just now and I may have found an unintentional fix. At least for my MW6.

For those who are seeing TKIP, if you go through the settings on the Tenda app, select Fast Roaming and enable it. See if you still have TKIP enabled.

After doing this, it seems like it's AES-only now?

The warning on that setting suggests that it makes things incompatible for older devices, so it feels like it disables WPA and leaves WPA2.

      • Check with a wifi analyzer tool.

      • +2

Seems to make the security warning on iOS go away, thanks!!

      • +6

        Confirmed^

Using NetXPro on android. Discovered I had WPA/WPA2- PSK TKIP + AES mode with my network. Enabling Fast roaming fixes this as it removes older device compatibility and now falls back onto WPA2 only with CCMP/AES.

On a side note. Noticed my fritzbox now supports WPA3

        • +2

Double confirmed. Had already set it on fast roaming before reading about this, only to find out I'd already enabled the solution.

Only issue I have with the Tenda is that you can't separate the 2.4G/5G wireless SSID's. Windows kept on connecting to 2.4G despite the neighbourhood being oversaturated with so many wifi signals, so had to disable it on my computer so I could connect exclusively to 5G.

          Aside from that, works great!

        • +1

This is good news. anyone confirm this solution also works for the MW3 units?

          • +1

@ESEMCE: I have the MW3 units, it became WP2 only after I activated free roaming, no idea if that is what you were looking for.

      • +1

You legend and thanks to other legends for confirming - can anyone test on MW3?

        • +1

I'm using the MW3. Fast roaming is enabled, and my LG V30 Plus says it's connected to "WPA2 PSK".

          • +2

@ransworld: WPA2 PSK can be AES or TKIP :)

Any chance you can install this app (you have to give it permissions to access your wifi) and click on your Wifi name? (You can uninstall it when finished).

            https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vrem.wifia…

Does it say "WPA2-PSK-CCMP" when you click on your wifi name? If so, that's AES :)

            Thanks again

            • +1

              @bdl: No problem.

              It says [WPA2-PSK-CCMP+TKIP][ESS]

              What does this mean?

              • +2

@ransworld: Thanks @ransworld, breaking it down, it means

                WPA2 = using WPA2
PSK = with a preshared key
CCMP = with AES … and
                TKIP = TKIP

TKIP is regarded as an insecure type of encryption, something that a few of us who have bought the MW3s are annoyed about (well, pissed off about), since we want to force the units to use AES only.

Not sure why your LG is connecting with AES and TKIP when @mattomatic is connecting with CCMP only. If you've definitely activated "fast roaming" reboot all your MW3s, delete the wifi connection on your LG, then reboot your phone and try adding your wifi network again. That may change the setting. You really don't want TKIP if you can avoid it.

Thank you for taking the time to check for us all!

                • @bdl: @ramsworld which version of the firmware and app are you using? The app was updated about two weeks ago and I am currently using the latest version of both.

                  • @mattomatic: According to the Tenda WiFi app, I'm on the current version: V1.0.0.31 (6705).

TKIP is actually not showing now, after disabling and re-enabling "fast roaming".

                    • +2

@ransworld: Thanks for checking. Glad that you are no longer seeing TKIP. I ended up downloading a few different web analysers last night to check I wasn't getting a false positive. This appears to be a legitimate workaround. I have disabled auto-update on my app in case Tenda push out something that breaks it.

                • +2

@bdl: Thanks for the info :)

After disabling and re-enabling "fast roaming" WiFiAnalizer is now showing [WPA2-PSK-CCMP][ESS].

I had recently reset the primary node and switched it to "bridge mode", as we are trying to diagnose some NBN dropouts. Fast roaming was on by default, but perhaps the change only occurs after switching fast roaming off and on again?

                  • @ransworld: Great work! Thanks for testing, my MW3s are interstate behind a Covid border lockdown so I can't test myself :)

I can't say regarding the on/off fast roaming, but others in this thread may be able to confirm.

        • +3

Can confirm it works on MW3. Enabled Fast Roaming as per @ausmechkeybaords post (you legend!) and checked WiFi Analyser. Sure enough, only [WPA2-PSK-CCMP][ESS] (no TKIP) is showing.

        • My MW3 now says says [WPA2-PSK-CCMP+TKIP][ESS] again… I haven't changed any settings since turning Fast Roaming off and on.

          • @ransworld: When i toggle fast roaming my Iphone doesn't show week security. However every time i leave my house and return it does say week security again.. to which i have to enter the app and re-toggle the fast roaming… any possible work around to this?? Also i have had fast roaming on since installation and have still had the iphone suggest week security.

      • Thanks so much. This worked on my MW5c. Now I can use it in peace.

      • I have 4-5 devices that stop working when I enable ' Fast Roaming', so the fix doesn't work for me.

        • +1

Out of curiosity, would this mean that your incompatible devices have to use TKIP, and are therefore insecure?

    • +1

Yep, plus you cannot control channels, or have a separate SSID for 2.4Ghz / 5Ghz Wi-Fi networks. I'd pass on these, the TP-Link Deco is a good alternative that pops up at a good price from time to time.

      • Just got Deco M5 today, I don't think I can manually set wifi channel actually but there's an optomise button that decides and changes it for you

  • +1

    is MW6 safe?

  • Will the MW6 play nice with Optus HFC?

    • Yeah just set it up in AP-mode.

    • Hook up the MW6 to the NBN box.

  • Only reason stopping me from buying is the lack of ability to reserve static IP for connected devices

    • You can, somewhat.
Assign a port mapping to the device - an unused port if you want. It'll hold it's IP then.

    • You're best off bridging it and using a proper router to be honest if you want any form of functionality beyond the bare basics.

  • +1

    Unsecure. Not fit for usage.

  • I'd be curious to see if this issue occurs in the MW3 successor, the MW5c.

    • I bought the MW5c and had the same issue. ausmechkeyboard’s fix above worked!

  • I have these MW3. The only complaint is you cannot specify which wifi band it should connect. I've always enabled fast roaming and set it to reboot once a week.
