(Vodafone) Apple iPhone SE 2020 64GB $597 (Inc Free $40 Vodafone Starter SIM) @ Officeworks

1090

Looking at getting an iphone as an Xmas present for someone. $597 is the cheapest price yet for the new 2020 SE. Even better it’s from a local B&M seller with AU 24 month Apple warranty.

The phone is network unlocked (according to Vodafone support via phone call) and comes with a Vodafone $40 prepaid sim for free.
Mod: According to associated user and other users in comments, the phone is locked. See here.

“If you’ve had your device for less than 6 months there’s a $50 unlocking fee.
If you’ve had your device for over 6 months there’s a $25 unlocking fee”.

Sell the $40 prepaid sim for $20. Brings the price to $577. By far the cheapest price yet.

You could even sell your wall charger and earbuds to someone with an iphone 12 haha

Hope it helps someone :)

    Locked to Vodafone

I called Vodafone and they said they don’t lock any iphones. Apparently the officeworks listing is incorrect.

Possibly out of date information, the unlock device page has a new addition specifically regarding prepaid iPhone.

“If you purchased a Vodafone prepaid iPhone bundle after November 2020, the device may be locked to the Vodafone network.”

      • It is 100% locked to vodafone.
However comes with a $40 SIM card you can port over onto.
Or pay $50 to unlock within 6 months.

  • Interesting, essentially a $80 discount for the device being locked to Vodafone.

“If you’ve had your device for less than 6 months there’s a $50 unlocking fee.
If you’ve had your device for over 6 months there’s a $25 unlocking fee”.

    • $665.50 is the Apple EPP price… or just buy it from JB Hifi (even at retail) for $679 but use discounted egift cards to get it down to $645. Not worth fluffing around with Vodafone for this.

Yeah bargain this is, Locked iPhone lol.

  • Can someone confirm this - is it locked to voda or not?

    • +4

Maybe buy it and let us know..?

      Q&A
Is this phone locked to the vodafone network
      yes

      Seems unlocked to me. 🙃

    • It's locked.

  • +4

iPhones are not locked, is what I heard.

    • +5

Yep, this is what I was told by Apple and why I called Vodafone to confirm.

      • I am quite certain IPHONES are not locked in Australia.

  • Anyone recall the price from last times sale? I swear it was only couple dollars off

  • That screen looks so old though, thin bezels have become the norm for many years now with most mobiles…

    • +33

It’s quite an enlightening experience not giving a shit about not having the latest designed tech and not giving a dam what people think when they see you using it.

Save your money for real investments like paying off a house faster.

If you always chase the latest tech you’ll only end up with a draw of worthless gadgets.

      • +5

Also by not buying a $600 phone when you can get a $200 one that does the same job lmao

        • +2

Latest tech is a trade-off between time and money

Could get an android and cheap one which is a bit slow less reliable

Or the expensive one and not need to care so much

          • -3

@Stopback: Eh, the tiny battery in this phone will wear out much quicker than the 5000mah batteries in cheaper Android phones. Also I think unless you buy a bottom dollar unit, midrange phones are plenty fast for most nowadays

        • +3

This $600 phone will be supported for 5 years whereas a $200 one would be lucky to be supported for 2.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Buttttt, if you buy a $200 phone every two years you get 6 years of support and updated tech by spending the same $600. #winning

          • @[Deactivated]: You make it sound like they are useless after 2 years… I have a Redmi Note 3 Pro from 2016 that still works great after a battery swap. It got updates for 3 years, and now I am running a custom ROM that has the latest security updates.

        • Also by not buying a $600 phone when you can get a $200 one that does the same job lmao

A 2020 SE will probably last longer, have better warranty if something does go wrong and have longer OS updates. I think long turn the SE is a good middle ground between stupidly expensive flagships and cheap disposable phones.

          • @PainToad: has there been a ton of cases of people using old phones say 4 years plus being hacked because its too old though.

android apps still are compatible with older versions.

            • +1

@Stopback: Apple just released a security update for phones dating back to 2013.

        • Also not buying a $200 phone when a $100 one that does the same job…

          • @[Deactivated]: I think you're hitting diminishing returns at around the $200 mark…

    • +6

Its definitely a trade off with the screen but with 4-5 years worth of software updates and A13 processor make it a good deal imo.

      • Man, those bezels in 5 years time…

        • In 5 years time they still won’t effect the usability of the phone in any way. Purely cosmetic.

  • +2

Umm Apple haven’t aloud locking off iPhones for years. I’m guessing that “maybe” locked is Vodaphone’s attempt to get people assume it’s locked and not try their existing sims. Can’t confirm myself.

    • +1

Can confirm, i now own one, it's locked and can be unlocked without a human, just online credit card payment.

  • I use to work for Vodafone around 4 years ago. Back then, iPhones were not locked. None of the models. I believe that may still be the case. Worth going in store and buy from there.

  • +3

Any deals on the 128gb se?

    • Still $758 at Officeworks.

Would like to see a deal on this also as a gift for Christmas.

Depending on when you purchased your iPhone or iPad, it may be locked to the Vodafone network.

If you purchased a Vodafone prepaid iPhone bundle after November 2020, the device may be locked to the Vodafone network.
If you purchased an iPhone or iPad on a plan after April 2013, it won’t be locked to the Vodafone network.

If you purchased an iPhone or iPad prior to April 2013, it may be network locked, and will display 'Invalid SIM' or 'SOS only' in status bar.

  • +2

So, if locked to Vodafone can I still use another provider on the Vodafone network, e.g. TPG?

    • It's network locked, so you can use it on any Vodafone MVNO as well.

    (rip off spotted)

  • -7

    65% screen to body ratio!

You'd need to go back to 2011 when the Galaxy s2 offered similar metrics.

    • companies have keyboard warriors scanning ozbargain & defending 2011 tech.

  • Phone looks like it came out in 2005

  • At this price point better getting a Oppo Reno 5g or a OnePlus 7T/7T Pro/8

  • Can i get applecare if i buy through office works? either separately with apple of via office works?

    • I don’t think you can purchase AppleCare directly through Officeworks, but you should be able to purchase it from Apple after purchasing the phone.

  • +3

Apple have removed charger and earbuds from all iPhones. So these won’t be included as per OP description.

    • -1

There’s a charger, USB cable and wired earbuds with lightning connector in the 2020 se box.

      • +3

depends on production date of this 2020 SE. announcement was in october, so pre-October stock would definitely have the accessories.

        • +1

Purchased one last week from JB, no charger. Ide say pre Oct stock is now gone.

  • How does this compare to Samsung S20 FE 4G?

    • Smashes it in every way except form factor and battery.

  • +2

I checked, it is a locked phone

    • +1

Damn, first time seeing iPhones are locked.

  • +1

I asked. It locked with Vodafone.

  • Still a great deal with the $40 sim

  • OP change description to Locked to vodafone network, unlocking costs $50.

    • Hi, just wondering once it's unlocked, is it dual sim or single sim?
      Thanks

      • Yes, they unlock both. The system can't recognise the e-sim, only seems to notice the card sim.

  • Okay, i got one, it's definitely locked, unlocking is $50 and takes a day, easy process to do, phones fine, better than the 7 i had, but i think i'll change to an 11 because the battery life is okay, but not great.

Over all, is it worth $30, maybe, but i had to have a backup phone for a day and it was hard to get SMS codes.

  • Darn, if I knew the price of the iPhone SE was going to tank as much as the UQ vaccine, I'd have bought it instead of the iPhone 8.

  • Who bought, worth it? Comments appreciated, suit my 22 years old daughter for Xmas?
