  • Does optus allow data banking?

    • No

    • They are unmetered at a shaped speed now though right, after you use quota?

      • correct, shaped to 1.5mbps

        • +1

The CIS states " If you use more than your included data (on any eligible device), we’ll automatically give you another 1GB for $10. If you use more than an extra 150GB on a single billing account, we may continue to charge you at the same rates or restrict your data until next billing period".

So be very careful, you could be up for $1500 or more if you over the 500GB.

          • +1

@cv05: This is the old CIS, they just shape you to 1.5mbps if you go over now, no fees

            • +1

@realfancyman: That's excellent news, would you have a link to the new cis?

Edit, can't see the new cis but can see over at whirlpool you can change it in the app.

  • +2

A month old deal, prior to Black Friday.

  • I'm on a $49 / Month to month plan Optus with 60gb data using a OnePlus 7t pro McLaren, wondering if I should upgrade to this plan purely for the 5g access, maybe buy a OnePlus 9 next year

Thoughts? I hardly use any data though, don't even use 10gb lol

    • +4

If I am using under 10gb pm, I’d get a prepaid plan for $150-200 for 12 months (Boost, Woolworths, Catch). 5G is overrated. Unless you need to download large amount of data very quickly, 4G is fast enough, even to watch 4K movies. But you are neither I guess, as you barely consume 10gb.

      • +1

Yeah I'll just stick with my current 4g month to month plan, 500gb is so enticing haha but I literally don't need it because I have NBN

      • +1

I agree with Buy2Much - 5G (in my experience anyway) is trash at present. Patchy coverage so it's always flicking between 4G/5G, I've noticed the latency is atrocious and speeds are underwhelming at this stage on Telstra (unsure how that compares to optus anyway)
I've disabled 5G on my fold and just set to 4G only because I was sick of the constant drops in and out

        • Not sure where ur getting ur evidence to say 5G is trash. In Camberwell/Glen Iris area I get test results of 650MBits/sec download, compared to NBN top of the line giving under 100MBits/sec.
          Do away with trashy NBN.

From my own use of optus 5G in Sydney, there are very few spots which actually gives 5G. The best location was actually out in the ocean under/near Sydney harbour bridge. Other spots which show the 5G symbol at the top, but would provide speeds of around 100mb/s.
Not really worth the upgrade at the moment.

Note: using the Samsung S20 FE 5G.

      • +1

On Telstra in the city it's either there's no 5G or there's 2 bars so it's about as fast as the 4G I could get anyway. You can get really great speeds when there's nobody on the network so the carrier hasn't cranked the load balancing (Very early mornings I've gotten 600Mbit+ on 4G near the Opera House).

It's great at home though. In Sydney's inner west I get 600-800Mbit at home during quiet hours.

        Using Note20 Ultra 5G Exynos.

      • I get 700mb at home (Darlinghurst)

    • +1

I'm paying 28 a month for 100gb on circles. Uses Optus network, month to month and got a crazy amount of data for 4G

    • you can enable 5g on ANY optus postpaid plan (I used to work at optus) just get them to call up and turn it on for you. I would even do it if you dont have a 5g phone as it opens up all the bands to your mobile.

  • +4

The amount of data is sufficient for creating a hotspot and use as a WiFi

    • +3

Is it possible to use as data sim only for home internet?

      • +2

I read that Optus might not allow it in a modem. But if you hotspot it with a smart phone/tablet it would be okay.

        • +1

It USED to be the case Optus couldn't guarantee SIMs will work in a non-phone device. But it was worded differently which made it sound like it definitely wouldn't work in most instances. But if the SIM works in a phone then it will work in a modem in most (perhaps even all) cases. (Unlike their home wireless broadband which can only be used if the SIM is inserted into the modem they provide with their specific firmware.)

The deliberate blocking of SIM use in non-phone devices is more of a USA thing. Here's hoping this foolishness never happens here because it's a huge step backwards. Maybe things have changed recently. But Optus would have to deliberately block their SIMs from working in literally hundreds of other devices and that's unlikely.

Anyway, what is much more likely is uncounted services/data might become counted against your data quota if you insert the SIM into a non-phone device. Such as putting the SIM into a wireless modem and accessing free services on a phone over wifi. Optus has stated words to this effect for years in their t&c. But lots of people (myself included) tested it years ago, and uncounted data (Optus Sport, Pandora, etc) remained uncounted with the SIM in our (wireless AND wired) modems instead of our phones.

Note: I'm NOT saying things definitely haven't changed. I'm just saying the above sounds much more likely because it's been that way for years in their t&c. That is, Optus basically gives the impression in the wording of their t&c, that SIMs "won't" work in non-phone devices, so Optus has some legal recourse IF some customers put the SIM into their non-phone device and receive a huge excess data bill because Optus' ability to discern uncounted data was lost.

      • I am thinking of data pooling with a mobile broadband SIM on the same account, which can be had for another $15/no.

        • Theyll drop that down to $12 a month if you sign up via live chat

          • @mauricem: How is that achieved? I asked on Live Chat and they didn't help. Is there something specific to say/ask for?

            • @ycon: Sorry, this was offered without even asking a few weeks ago. Other ozb members reported the same in the last post.
Basically it was 20% off the second service so $65 for 500gb Optus one then $15 less 20%=$12 for 5gb data SIM total $77 for 510gb of shared data per month (they doubled the 5gb for some reason)

      • Yes,

I have 3 data sims (max was 5 free data sharing sims) grandfathered a few years back, have used in a huawei b525 modem/router

    • +1

Can confirm the sim I received from this deal did NOT work in a modem device (netgear m1 nighthawk)

Tried Optus chat and then to go to Optus to have them change it to one that would however no luck

T&Cs state something like it must be used in a phone device
Could depend on the modem, others may have better luck.

      • +1

Why not just set up a hotspot from a spare mobile?

        • +1

We did consider that but for full time home internet wasn’t something I felt viable for my folks, range, location, simplicity etc

          • @original15: Also considered just keeping sim and taking a smaller data sim plan (data pool) but found a more cost effective option w Optus. Fwiw they’re regional Victoria so nbn speeds are fixed wireless (<25mb), Telstra 4g the town has minimal Telstra available (speeds were 1-3mb/s), Optus (two towers and heaps of bandwidth available, were easily able to get 120mb/s on 4g)

          • +1

@original15: If your location gets perfect Optus signal it works just like a NBN broadband except for limitation of 10 devices can be connected at the same time. A wifi repeater will do the trick to get you connect more than 10 devices.

      • +1

I have the sims from these Optus One plans working in numerous modem routers. They aren't locked to a phone or to the Huawei models.

        • +1

From critical info summary for this specific plan
“ For use in mobile phones and tablet devices only. You cannot use the SIM card in other devices like modems.”

didn’t work in my modem but others could have better luck!

          • @original15: Ah ok, that's weird. Our local Optus shop actually sells the B818 modem with those plans.

            • @cv05: Sells the modem with this mobile sim only plan?

My folks ended up on a home 4g plan with that modem, but it was a separate offer. Semantics tho as was same price, same data, with modem, wasn’t advertised as such but think they didn’t wanna let them down given it didn’t work in a modem (as per terms)

So maybe it’s on offer every where but technically a separate offer?
All I know is the 4g Optus I was getting in regional vic was 20-30x better than what I get here in metro melb

              • @original15: I'm going to check with the Optus shop today. All these 500GB plans that they have released in the last 6-12 months are starting to get confusing.

              • +1

@original15: I went into Optus this morning and bought a $65 sim and popped it into my B818 and it worked straight out of the box using the default LTEBROADBAND apn. It shouldn't actually work using that APN, what it should do is take you to a page stating that you're using the sim in a modem which is not allowed. However you can add the "connect" apn and the modem will work.

                • @cv05: Nice, we had also tried changing APNs but no dice 👍🏻

  • Just need a cheap 5g wifi dongle now

  • +3

Does this allow shared data pooling?

    • Optus One is a premium plan so it should allow data share. Only the prepaid and home broadband internet plans can't.

    • Yes data pooling is available with services on the same account

  • +3

According to the site, the monthly discount is $54, and price goes back to $119 after 12 months (as per popup T&Cs)

  • +7

10gb of roaming data is very good, once you know, we can actually use it.

  • -4

According to critical info $10 a gig over limit.
No deal. If heL$tra and vodafail traffic shape
why can’t these clown don’t do it

    • They have removed that $10 per gig thing according to a post earlier today.

      • +1

till I see the tc changed on page I would get in writing

        • +2

It is an option that you can enable in the app.

    • they do

  • 5 service limit :(
Grabbed the 1TB 5G deal (bought cheap 5G phone with 500GB + 500GB bonus plan. Sold phone) from a while ago
Have 9 services on one account. Other services on smallest plans etc.

    • Lolz can’t get the 5g unlimited home deal ?

      • +1

Not in range, cant share data. Have multiple ipads (kids++), multiple services for inlaws + plus mobile phones etc..

    • I asked about the 5 service limit, they said it's a limit of 5 Optus One services per account. So no limit on other services for the account

  • Has anyone been able to get the 10% student discount on this as well?

    • Not stackable. I signed up for the $65 month to month for 12 months and $61.62 iPh12Pr512 repayment plan in store. Both over the phone and in-store say they cannot stack.

      • Is that 61.62 per month over 36 months fit the phone?

        • Yes, Mine is on that one. 36 months. But I plan to do the $149 upgrade when iPhone 14 comes out or if 2 years have pass.

  • +2

Can I get a $39 plan and this one and data share?

  • A question for people that are already on this plan. Is this Optus One thing actually fast during network congestion as they advertised? My area gets congested quite a bit…was on a pretty sweet deal previously until their service became so low to a point it was basically unusable during COVID. had to cancel and get NBN instead. :(

    • +1

Definitely much slower on 4G during peak periods but I get 5G where I am so I'm not so affected.

  • +1

I am on the edge of a 5G zone according to Optus's map - is there any practical way to check what the speeds are like before committing?

    • +1

Would like to know this also.

Probably need to find someone that has a 5g phone to test.

    • +1

It’s month to month plan not a lock in contract. So can always cancel it.

  • Great deal. So far I have burnt through 100gb with my data share Sims and streaming YouTube at 1080p

  • if you are actually living in a 5G zone, you can probably use it as both Mobile+NBN replacement (providing you use less than 500GB data a month).

  • If they actually told me when I'd be getting 5g I'd buy it.

Since they refuse to tell me when I will be getting coverage, I am not buying it.

  • You'll be lucky if you can get a decent connection. In my case, I hardly get past 10MBps in my area with Optus. Telstra, although had 2 out of 4 signal bar, I am still getting an average 80MBps download speed on 4G. 5G, hands down Telstra the widest coverage.

  • What is the cheapest phone plan one can “add” to this to data share with it?

Calls not important, I’m thinking of setting up as a hotspot for the folks (barely use 50gb a month)

      • +1

Oh wow - so just to clarify:

$15 sim in 5G Hotspot modem
        $65 500GB in my phone

The $15 sim will have access to all 500GB of data too? It gets shared?

        • Depends on the sim plans
Optus generally has the “data pooling” logo/call out. Was going to do the above but ended up taking a 4/5g home broadband plan given needs, existing services and cost

        • +1

Yes the $15 will share the data, but only the Optus one sim will be 5g

          • @frugalferret: I didn't think a sim can differentiate between 4G and 5G?
Doesn't it depend on the device and whether it's 5G capable?

I am using my old sim on my iPhone 12 and can connect to 5G

      • Hi… Very new to the concept of inserting a data sim into a 4G modem

Does the optus data sim work with general modem? Or does it have to be Optus branded 4G Modem?

Hopefully someone can enlighten me. thanks

        • +1

Optus brand may be better as it has the right frequencies for Optus but most will work fine

  • Anyone know if this deal is available to buy/ pickup the sim in store?

  • Does this have eSim support for sharing mobile number with an apple watch?

    • Yes the plan does have E-sim support for the Apple Watch I set it up for my wifes watch and it works perfectly.

  • +3

    While the Terms state:

For use in mobile phones and tablet devices only. You cannot use the SIM card in other devices like modem.

I've read mixed results on this. Some have reported no issues using the SIM in a modem while others have reported receiving notification messages.

To avoid breaking the Terms you can purchase a Data Sharing SIM (starts at $15 per month for 5GB) which can be inserted into a modem while the Optus One SIM remains in the phone. And if needed, add more Data Sharing SIMs.
So 505GB at $80 a month for phone($65)+internet($15) is a viable alternative for some to use as a complete replacement for a phone plan and internet.

Vodafone previously offered an attractive deal to match Optus. 500GB at $55 per month with 10Mbps Infinite Data.
Worth waiting for another repeat deal from Vodafone if you find better value in their offering.

    • Pretty major omission from your comparison is that Optus includes 10gb international roaming to Zone 1 countries along with unlimited calls and texts from Zone 1 countries when overseas. I don't believe Vodafone include any international roaming entitlements

      • That's a valid point you have. That could be a determining factor for some.

To be brief, readers were encouraged to refer to the CIS to review the finer details.

You're welcome to compile a comparison list of all inclusions.

      • +1

Ha, not sure how many people would be able to use their "roaming" data these days

Awesome comparison BTW, thanks. I'll never go to Vodafone again- their non-major city coverage is atrocious

      • It looks like Voda does include minutes for zone 1 country for Lite+ Plan and above.

    • Thanks for the comparison

  • So is the takeaway from this that, unless you use international calling, the Voda deal is a mile ahead?
And as per previous posts, Voda's SIM works fine in a modem?

    • Voda plan not available any longer.

  • If anyone is interested and needs help connecting or needs further clarification on this just PM me :)

    (Optus Employee)

  • Any suggestions on a 5G dongle/modem device to use? My plan would be to connect it from 5G Dongle > Mesh

    • I’ve switched both my wife’s and my number to the $65 plan, and added a $15 MBB sim to access data sharing as a complete NBN replacement service.

I tried the HTC 5G hub which was purchased at JB. Worked a treat when I tested it on Telstra (5G speeds were fantastic) but I believe these are locked to Telstra as the Optus logo appeared as the service provider, but could not connect to the internet. In then tried a d-link router with 4G LTE capability but the speeds never exceeded 35Mbps. So I returned that and settled on the Netgear Orbi 4G LTE router which reaches speeds of 120Mbps and integrates perfectly in my existing Orbi mesh wifi setup. Very pleased with the result considering I was paying Aussie BB $99pm for consistently average NBN speeds.

      • Wow- that is an expensive modem (Netgear Orbi).

I'm quite confused- does the modem itself determine what speeds I'll get on the 4G network? EG will a $100 Huawai B525 modem get the same speeds as $700 Netgear Orbi (given both are plugged in via LAN to a device)?

    • I bought the Nighthawk M5 for this very reason

Also have the Telstra 5G Wifi Pro which is now surplus to requirements

Both work fine for 5G with Optus SIMs

  • I didn’t think it would but that was my experience. The d-link dwr-956 plugged straight into my orbi mesh system only managed download speeds around 35Mbps. The Orbi 4G router on the other hand reaches 120Mbps. They both seemed to support the same bands, I guess the orbi has better antennas built in. It is expensive but the way I see it, I’m no longer paying $99 a month on crap NBN so it’ll have paid for itself within the year. And I can take it with me when I travel and all my devices will connect to it as it’s the same wifi.
