TBF they are comparable to the Bose and Sonys, with some reviews a bit better and some reviews about the same for sound and ANC.
Where they are a bad deal is price, the lame pouch, and price.

Sorry, but these win the 2020 headphone design FUGLY awards! Most Apple stuff looks great, but IMO these look cheap and nasty.
And that stupid pouch (it's not a case) which doesn't even protect them properly and the only way to switch them off is it put them in the pouch, what a total design failure.
No physical aux in for professional editors, fail (and at this price point, this is professional headphone pricing). Even the Surface Headphones have Aux in.
Good luck with these Apple, only hardcore fans will buy them.
A few notes from a decent review:
99% of headphones on the market use the “yoke” design (looks like chicken wishbone) to hold & allow adjustment of the cups.
Apple always claims “innovation” so of course they had to use their own design instead of using the traditional “yoke” design.Also a problem is when they fold flat, the edges of fancy aluminium cups bangs into each other allowing them to damage each other.
I guess folding inwards like some other headphones looks “too messy” for a Apple product, even though it would be a solution to stop the aluminium cups from hitting each other.

Nah, there are plenty of more premium headphones, they're not made by Apple, Samsung, etc. Sony make a few decent options, quite different to the Bluetooth xm options.
Focal have some very popular models, but I a world of wired you need to consider dacs and Amps.
Those are a very different product for a very different consumer.

These are overpriced sure, but you CAN get an adaptor to make them wired.
You shouldn't have to, though. When I had my Pixel 2, it was a massive PITA needing an adapter for 3.5mm audio. I had three of them but never had one on me when I needed it.
I'd buy name brand headphones for $800, but not Apple. Beats are crap compared to more reputable brands like denon, jbl, audio technica, Sony who have yeasts of experience in this field.
That's why Sony has risen to the top.

They are working on it since 2014, BUT the car industry is overregulated & not compatible with Apple proprietary walled garden.
They cannot even enable ECG for the Apple watch in Australia in >2years because of strict regulation.It will only use Apple maps and won't take you anywhere unless Tim Cook allows you to go there.

I love Apple products. Have an Iphone, ipad and 2 apple tvs, even have airpods. But this is a genuine waste of money. The equivalent Bose or Sony XM4 for half the price are simply better products.
