Google Pixel 4a 5G at $649 at JB Hi-Fi

2260

Get the Google Pixel 4a 5G at $649. Had been waiting patiently for the normal 4a, but prices weren’t going down. I think the 5G version at this price is a good deal.

Hopefully it helps those looking for a Pixel deal. Obviously, folks can get discounted JB Hi-Fi cards for further savings…

Merry Christmas and a happy 2021!

Edit: Just noticed Officeworks still has it at $797 for those who would like the price beat with OW. :)

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2020

Fark, bought it on Friday for $810 with a case and screen protector.

    • +2

Ouch. Any chance to return it? JB usually are good at price matching and returning the difference back to you (if you bought from them).

      • I'll give them a go on boxing day. Great phone btw, I feel like I've upgraded from my S20+

        • +8

you bought this from an s20+? why?

          • +2

@Slidingrb26: I've been a Samsung user from S2, the battery life and overheating on S20 plus is shambolic. Maybe it is just mine but I am shocked by how bad my S20+ was. I'll be selling it very soon.

The S20 has a better zoom on the camera but that is all afaik, the camera software is better in the pixel, better low light in the pixel as well.

        • +21

We will be happy to refund the difference mate. You have up to 2 weeks from purchase date but as always the sooner the better

          • @lemonliam: Wow thanks :)!

          • @lemonliam: hey, how long will this price last until? I'm waiting on my gift cards to arrive

            • @0zyt0zy: Actually not a hundred percent on that sorry! If it's in our catalogue it'll be until Jan 1st, otherwise expect it to be a boxing day only type of scenario

              • @lemonliam: Just curious, for all such sales, is that the retailer (JB Hi-Fi in this case) that’s choosing to offer the discount or does the manufacturer (Google in this case) also has a say/%age discount)?

                • +1

@emgee: Depends on the type of sale. It can be directives from the Google for example if they're offering similar sales at other locations. It's often a joint effort of us and the manufacturer for many sales however

            • @0zyt0zy: Where did you order gift cards from? I'm planning to order some through Suncorp but not if I know you're waiting on delivery! Don't want to miss out on this one.

              • +1

@snafu109: Suncorp giftcards are instant. I did it today, and total cost was $616.55.
I know through other vendors it can be a bit slower (not too bad, a few hours generally), but Suncorp has always been instant for me no matter what giftcards I have ordered,

                • @realsniper09: Even I Purchased it with Suncorp Giftcard via Suncorp App. Great way to save some money on vouchers. Wonder why other banks dont provide this feature. I just opened a zero balance account just to avail the discount coupons. Saved 35$.

          • @lemonliam: Cheers, refunded the difference today, thanks. It worked out $659 with my OtterBox case and glass screen protector. Bargain!

    • +1

      Case + screen protector 10 bucks ?

    • +1

JB do have some kind of 30 day price drop protection

    • Go to the store and they will refund the difference.

  • +3

    Good price from $799.

  • +3

Had been waiting patiently for the normal 4a, but prices weren’t going down.

    Same

    • +1

I took the 11% discount in November, thinking I'd probably regret not being patient, but so far it seems like it was a good move. I'm sure it will get cheaper eventually though.

  • Holy hell that's a great price

  • +1

Still waiting for a Pixel 5 deal, hopefully something comes on Saturday…

    • +4

not from JB Hi-Fi deffo. I went into the store and asked and was told that anything that's on the online webpage (after 7pm) is everything there is for boxing day

      • So no discount for Samsung S20 FE 5G? :(

    • I just purchased a used (1 week) sorta Sage pixel 5 for $750. Always risky purchasing second hand but made sure I tried to protect myself in every way possible to prevent it being locked/stolen.

      • 1 week old for 750 wow

      • did you get it from North Sydney by any chance haha? cos I returned a 1 week old phone since it was acting up, but on hindsight it was more software issues and bugs rather than the phone itself since the replacement also has some of those same issues >_<

        • +1

EBay Aus. Unwanted gift and wanted to revert back to iphone. A few messages back and forth. Seller didn't want to give IMEI but have in writing that it's not stolen or blocked and photos to prove it. Also paid with PayPal. The other thing most people would stay away from is no receipt since it was a gift. Asked myself, what if phone fails and I was to make a warranty claim via google? Well turns out people have had their phones replaced/repaired even without receipt or proof of payment. Responses via eBay seemed quite honest and genuine. Even noticed a MacBook in the background in one of the photos which told me, person's probably an apple fan. Soon as I paid for item, he said he will ship first thing Tues morning since AUS post is closed due to PH.

I took the risk but let's wait and see. Not everyone's cup of tea.

          • +1

@gezza90: I bought a second hand iPh 11 off eBay too, so glad it came around safe and sound and it was as described. No major flaws. I hope you get a good one!!

  • +1

Similar to pixel 5 just 60hz instead of 90hz, no wireless charging, plastic instead of aluminium. Did I miss any other difference?

    • +6

This one has a larger screen

    • +6

      Also 6gb vs 8gb I see
And gorilla Glass 3 vs 5

    • +4

      IP rating

    • +5

      This has Headphone jack.

      • +1

Look, I'm a fan of ole mate headphone jack but I have to admit that I just bought a USB C adapter permanently attached to the headphones and I never had to worry about it again. Cost was $7 of ebay. Moving on…

        • +1

I moved to Bluetooth buds a while ago… So the headphone jack thing doesn't sway me any more… Memory expansion though might..

          • -1

@scud70: Some people (and studies) aren't sure that wearing bluetooth devices long-term is good for your brain. I'll stick with wired headphones as much as I can.

        • It’s all good until you board an 8 hour flight, forget your headphones and can’t buy a cheapie pair

          • +1

@MementoMori: Should setup a usb c to headphone jack vending machine in airports!

    • this one also has a headphone jack whereas the pixel 5 doesnt

    • +26

      4a 5G Vs 5;
      Gorilla Glass, 3 Vs 6
No IP Vs IP68 (PIxel 4a 5G has no water protection)
      Display, 6.2" Vs 6.0"
Headphone Jack 3.5mm Vs No headphone Jack
Battery 3885mAh 18W fast charging Vs 4080 mAh 18W fast charging
No wireless charging Vs Wireless charging 12W, Reverse charging 5W
Colours, Just Black Vs Just Black, Sorta Sage
      RAM 6GB Vs 8GB
      Body plastic Vs Aluminium
Both phones have the same CPU (765G) and GPU (Andreno 620), 128GB storage and identical cameras front and selfie.

      • The specs are all over the place. 5G has headphone jack but no IP rating, bigger screen but no wireless charging and smaller ram.

        • To me most of it makes sense. The 4A 5G is meant to be the budget device, so no wireless charging, smaller RAM and battery, plastic body saves money on the build. No IP rating, cheaper Gorilla glass 3 also saves money. The main oddity to me is that the 4A 5G has a larger screen, usually the budget device has the larger screen, this to me makes this phone a bargain at $649. Especially when the 4A 5G has flagship quality camera, that is nominated by many phone reviewers to have one of the best cameras in the phone world.

  • +1

Wow, thanks so much. Been waiting for this!
    Bought one.

  • Is the CPU weak? No sure but why it is so good? (Legitimately asking, currently I have a pocophone

    • Weak ?

      • -1

yeah mom, your moves are WEAK
        shut up son

*edit - ok we obviously don't get the reference lol

        • lol which movie ?

        • Dont talk to your mother like that

        • I got it, love the reference. It's one of the funniest Vines I've ever seen.

    • Midrange cpu, wouldn't call it weak but its not the same as flagship phones from Samsung and co… More than enough for most users unless a heavy gamer.

      • +1

A slower soc will definitely show its lack of speed almost everywhere, when multitasking, when processing HDR photos, when browsing etc
That being said, $650 should have been the og price for this, too many compromises

    • Not weak, very decent but not flagship fast.

    • it is solid albeit not flagship-level. you'll mostly notice the difference in gpu-bound tasks (ie 3D games, usually).

  • Looking for a upgrade from LG G3(its time, half my apps are starting to not work lol) and really want dual sim, is the esim stuff supported easily by au carriers?

    • +2

Telstra, Optus and Vodafone support esim. Telstra postpaid only, while Optus and Voda both prepaid and postpaid.

      • Oh, that sucks. was hoping to do boost esim for data only and then telstra prepaid normal sim and both on a 365 days plans.

        • Teltra supports esim on prepaid and postpaid, via their App. Boost doesn’t yet.

      • Not entirely true - Telstra also supports prepaid esim.
Source: I've been using it for >12mths

    • You can still get the G3 to work if you're willing to tinker. I've got my G3 flashed with a pixel rom running Android pie. Still pretty nippy. Use it as a backup phone. There's guides to unlock the bootloader. I used UsU, then flashed TWRP recovery and then the rom

  • +2

hopefully stock remains on boxing day to pay via zip for another 10% off (capped at $30 but can do multiple payments)

  • Is the extra $100 worth it for the additional 6GB RAM and ~140mha on Oppo Find X2 Neo?

    • Depends on your preference. This is stock android plus will get updates in the future.

Just saw the spec and I reckon yes oppo is better.

      • Thank you. Won't the Oppo get Android updates too, despite maybe slower than Pixel phones?

        • +1

Not sure how Oppo is these days but they used to be shocking with long term updates. Don't buy one with that expectation of getting multiple android updates. Expect maybe a year? I wouldn't count on much more than that.

    • I have the Oppo Find X2 Neo, picked it up for $640 around black friday from JB. I love the camera versatility- I need the zoom lens at work daily, and the video stability is great on all lenses.
I personally think the Pixel 4a 5G is a more "premium" feeling phone (though I'm not quite sure why), but I don't know what I would purchase if both phones were the same price.
Having 12gb ram and 256gb internal storage is pretty fantastic, and the 90hz OLED is a big upgrade for me personally. Google are probably smarter with their battery usage to eke out the same screentime for a slightly smaller better, but the VOOC charge is very fast.

As for updates- no idea for long term. I hope they stay on top of it for at least 2 years, being a mid/high tier product from Oppo.

  • +1

Thanks, got one with HCF gift cards for an extra 4% off. Now looking for a good screen protector & case (Spigen?) if anyone knows of any deals?

  • +1

Very good deal, shame I went for the $99/month Jb Telstra deal but is a great phone with the added ultrawide over the 4a.

  • +8

Just tried to price match with the google online store. What a nightmare of miscommunication. They wont price match before purchase, only after according to the person on the chat window.

So you have to buy the phone at full price from google, then send them the discounted link and hope they adjust the price, what a waste of time.

    • +4

Don't do this. I purchased one through Google store 4 days ago for $799 and contacted then to see if I could get a refund on the price difference. They wouldn't match but said I can just return the device for a full refund (which I will do).

      • +1

Yeah I thought it might be worth it for the warranty and returns are apparently easier. But might try to price match at office works instead

      • +1

Anything specific they said, as JB HI Fi is listed on their site under price match.

        • +2

I am trying again as it would seem they should price match. Not sure why they didn't when I called earlier.

        • Just finished trying again - wouldn't price match as JB doesn't use the word 'unlocked'!! I have purchased one from JB and will return my current to Google.

          • @themonkeybutlers: I was thinking of doing this.
Would you be able to try to price match officeworks? Their site specifically states unlocked. Let us know how you go as I would purchase from Google store if this works

If it doesn't work, I think they charge a restock fee to refund right?

            • +2

@SmiTTy: Just tried again. They price matched office works as it states it is unlocked.

              • @themonkeybutlers: Legend, thank u for being our Guinea pig :)
                It is very much appreciated!

              • @themonkeybutlers: Sorry 1 more question if I may, does Google store offer a valid Australian tax invoice? (ie am I buying from Google Australia or is it Google singapore or us or something). I assume gst has Been paid as on checkout it shows this as a line item

              • @themonkeybutlers: i was wondering,
does this mean purchasing from google store is a better deal with the 100$ in-store credit (current promotion)?
since technically price beat 644$(OW) with an 100$ to use on Google Store?

                • @Tohnio: Not sure if I still get the $100 promotion. Will have to wait and see if it arrive in my inbox.

        • I just spent about 30mins online with Google, trying for Officeworks pricematch. They went through the whole process, saying it was a valid store and price. Then after all that, said the process was to purchase if from them at full price, get it delivered and then apply for the pricematch. But….the Officeworks cheaper offer had to still be available at that time you apply in the future.

  • +4

I reckoned the Pixel 5 black Friday Telstra + PB at OW, is the best deal ever for 2020.

    • +2

101% agree 👍🏼 at $711 from OW price beat.

  • +1

Thanks OP! My partner has been bugging me to find a replacement for her for the last month, and this one fits the bill. Just glad it's a brick and mortar store selling this so that the returns/replacement process is streamlined

  • +4

Thanks OP. Been meaning to buy this phone since it was announced and had been waiting for a good deal to come out. This is the first actually decent deal.

Bought two: one for myself and one for my wife. Much appreciated.

  • +4

Officeworks have now updated their price to $644 a little cheaper protecting themselves from pricebeats lol
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/google-pix…

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought one with gift card from Suncorp (extra 5% off)

  • Is the front camera better on this for video, or is the S20FE's front camera better for video?

This does 1080p on the front camera and S20FE does 4K, so I am assuming the S20FE is better?

    • Same question about camera in general so I had tested the cameras at store, personally i would go to FE, somehow much better results displayed on the phone itself

  • Mi9T ate it recently but I can return it for a full refund. Ive been looking at Pixel 5, 4A 5G and recently the S20 FE 5G. Was kind of hoping the 5 would be on sale but this might be a good cop if it doesnt. Refresh rate is nice but not really a necessity, especially if it gets around the same SoT as the Pixel 5 powering 90Hz all the time. No IP rating and GG3 just means I cant be as free handed and loose as I was before.

If the S20 FE 5G goes on sale, wouldnt mind that either in all honesty. My S7 is still holding up today so that says something, right?

  • Any deals on the 4a non-5G?

    • +1

None that I’ve been able to find, pretty much hasn’t moved a $ since the Singles Day sale. I was tired of waiting and finally bought this one.
