  • Same price I paid for a q70r(2019) last year. My God.

    • +8

European q80t (which we got) is a replacement for the q70r.

      • +8

Some tests even have last years model beating this years. No deal.

    • TV prices fall after some time? Who would have thunk it?

      • thunk

        verb
move, fall, or strike something with a dull, heavy sound.
"the sword thunked into the tree"

      • +2

Actually TV prices went up this year in general i think due to shortage etc. Look at the prices the LG C9 was going for vs CX of same size.

  • +1

I paid a deposit with Harvey Norman local to pick it up at the end of the month when its likely to come in, however interested if anyone knows a better way to get it sooner!

  • This or the 95T?

    • +3

95T if you can afford it, more dimming zones plus wide viewing angle filter and one connect box

    • +2

Also, the 95T has less reported issues in terms of blurriness in HDR, vertical banding during sports viewing and dirty screen effect.

      • have you got a link for this as i'm looking at this model but concerned over the poor motion response watching sports ?

        • +3

Just multiple people discussing on whirlpool forum. If you look at the samsung 2020 qled thread, last 20 or so pages. It comes up quite a bit. If you're watching a lot of sports, I'd definitely consider a different TV.

          • @ifreddo: Thanks, you’ve helped me make up my mind, I’ll hold off for another year or so.

          • @ifreddo: Different to Samsung or different to Q80T ?

  • +6

    wow, that's a big drop.

    For a Melbourne delivery -
JB - $59 (but pickup looks available)
    Good guys - $55
    Harvey Norman - $59
    Domayne - $75

also to save you from having to go compare -
Good Guys Commercial is now $1999 as well. With $55 delivery

  • Ordered last night from The Good Guys, but was out of stock for store pickup, so had to opt for delivery (+$55)..

  • +2

    Here’s a review for anyone interested https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q80-q80t-qled.

    Nice find OP. :)

    • +15

Note that the US q80t upon which this review is based is different to the European q80t which we got. Our model does not have the wide angle filter.

Europe has a q90t which is equal to the US q80t which we didn't get (essentially the q95t without one connect)

      Samsung model naming is atrocious.

      • Is there a US equivalent to our Q80t then?

        • Not that I know of

          • +4

@Hypnotoad: Thanks. Bet they do this on purpose knowing that most reviewers would be American.

            • @TheContact: Well their CEO did get famously thrown in jail.

The bigger the fishes head, the further the stink travels down the fish (even once it's chopped off).

        • +3

Europe also has a Q85T which is equal to US Q80T, no available here though, last year we also got Q75R so i'm assuming this years Q70T is also a downgrade. Q80T vs Q70T look near identical in store, go with a Hisense Q8 or Sony X900/Q950 for similar money. Q95T is a massive upgrade but silly prices when there's OLED.

Its pretty ridiculous how many well informed people Samsung has conned with there BS naming, without a local review media where ripe for abuse unfortunately.

          • @Randiculous: IYO, how does the Hisense Q8 differ - does one offer something more over the other, or just pricing differential?

The Sammy doesn't have Dolby Vision does it?

            • +3

@fookos: Both Samsung and Hisense have average to poor motion handling and processing compared to Sony, Hisense Q8 65" (also called U8QF) has 180 dimming zones & 1400+ nit peak brightness, Q80T true specs are unknown but even the better US spec doesn't come close at ~50 zones and 700 nits. Chinese budget brands like Hisense will sit in the store corner while Samsung pays to have the front and centre display location, its only a matter of time until Samsung marketing cant blindly persuade consumers anymore.

Samsungs hold out on Dolby vision is also dumb, just to save a few dollars, its now the industry standard and used by Netflix, HDR content definitely can look better with Dolby Vision on a cheaper TV, Samsung will end up with more blooming, black crush and colour inaccuracy issues with just basic HDR 10.

          • @Randiculous: The 80 has local dimming while the 70 is edge lit. Should be as pretty large difference

            • @kulprit: I would encourage you to take a look, I thought that too when I almost purchased a Q80T a few months ago, did a lot of research and after staring at one in-store for a while I don't believe the FALD is doing anything and likely doesn't even have the ~50 zones on US spec, I really struggled to differentiate the Q70T vs Q80T. Q95T & Sony X950H are the only LCDs with a clear improvement over all the other mid range models.

              • @Randiculous: Will definitely have a look next time I'm in store then. I'm going to get an x9500h anyway but interesting with the 70t being a good saving over the 80t.

      • +7

It amounts to anti consumer conduct. It really is terrible!

      • +2

Urgh. That’s really annoying. Thanks for pointing that out Hypnotoad. The lack of the wide angle filter makes a big difference I think.

      • Ah dammit. Was basing my q80t on rtings review for hdr gaming and sport :(

      • If this model doesn't have the wide angle filter, would the contrast ratio be higher?
AFAIK the wide angle filter effects the contrast ratio

      • This is insane. Is there a site I can visit to see reviews like rtings for TVs I can actually buy in Aus?

    • Thanks anyone comment on ratings.com as a reviewer, never heard of it?

      • +6

Used to sell AV and rtings is probably the best AV review website I have come across. Been around for ages. I like how they're very in-depth while still being fairly easy to understand for the layman. Highly recommended.

Just be careful with US vs AU/EU models as mentioned above.

      • They're the best, IMO.
Their ratings are unbiased as the scores are given based off test results

  • This is a really good price! I paid 2K for this TV at 55" just before Christmas.. this is when 10" really matters 😬

    • +1

75" for $2880 @ HN, JB in the Black Friday week.

      • I know I dropped my TV moving it after black Friday but before Christmas so timing was not on my side I got stuck in a no deal week and had to buy a TV… timing could not have been worst for me!

        • I think someone who bought TCN giftcards early on Wed saved 15%+ further.

  • +1

Decent price, a very good alternative to the X9000H without the high res motion blur

    • How would the Samsung compare to the X9500H?

      • +6

I cant say for sure, (please correct me if I am wrong) but I thought the q95t was more of an equivilant spec to the 9500h. I'm looking for a 65" and considering the forementioned models. I'm tempted by the Q80t at this price but with the new sony model announcements coming soon, I suspect this will lead to discounts on the current Sonys. Sony is my preferred option based on Spec and reviews. I don't need HDMI 2.1 and the general consensus appears to be 9500 over the 95 unless you need HDMI 2.1

      • +4

X9500h is closer to the q95t in terms of panel performance. The only downside is lack of hdmi 2.1 on the x9500h - which is only a gaming feature really. If you're not a serious gamer then the x9500h is the TV to get.

        • Q95T is significantly better for HDR movies

          • @cille745: It's certainly has got the brightness edge over the x9500t, but given it doesn't support Dolby Vision I'd probably opt for the DV support over the extra brightness plus save about $1k. Way more support for DV out there - I really don't understand why Samsung doesn't support it.

      • +1

Not as bright, no wide viewing filter.

        • I thought the Samsung had a wide viewing filter?

          • @Timm: Dang it. You're right. The q80t had the wide angle layer, x9000h doesn't. I think the wide viewing layer is a negative in most cases, overall it reduces the native contrast ratio.

            • +2

@Felixrising: Apparently only the US Q80T has wide angle and ours doesn't.

  • +4

Samsung to drop their new 2021 line up next week at CES. They just announced their new Neo QLED (mini LED) range today. But this is a great discount regardless.

    • so is it a bad time to buy this one?

      • +5

No, however if you need hdmi 2.1 the current gen from LG, Sony and Samsung all have had some issues which will be taken care of in the next versions. The Neo QLED or QN80T will very likely cost at least the RRP of this model, if you don’t want to game or have older consoles and want a great TV for movies etc this is a good buy. Waiting for next versions to be cheaper will likely then lead into the next next version.. which is great for the wallet since then you’ll never buy anything hahaha

        • Im confused, my samsung q80t has a hdmi port which is listed as gaming "has a console image next to the port" and when i plug my xbox series x in i get 4k 120 hz and HDR, so what would a 2.1 give me that this hdmi port on the q80t is not? Very curious as this TV i was told was next gen gaming compatible

        • +2

Ignore my comment, I re read what you said and you said 2.1 hdmi had issues, not that the TV didn't have a 2.1 hdmi port, my bads :)

          • +2

@Iwantthebestprice: 😊 Haha all good.. Yeh you have the 1 port which has some issues with PS5 HDR at 120 or something… Which I'm sure firmware can fix. However the Sony's implementation has been a total mess and the LG is not full bandwidth on the 4k Nano panels… I think in all cases it's the processors and what bandwidth they can handle is where the problem is, for instance the 8K and Oled implementation for LG which use the A9 processors do a better job at hdmi 2.1…. So the new processors on the Neos I think will take care of some of the issues with implementing hdmi 2.1.

      • +1

The neo qled will be expensive. So this might be the new discount price on these

      • Hmmmm, buy q95t or wait for neo qled…
What to do, what to do.

      • Personally I think buying previous gen panel technology just before a wave of new technologies from multiple manufacturers are released is a bad idea. But I like having the latest display tech (was an early adopter of OLED), so my opinion may be biased. ;)

  • +2

    I want 75 tho :(

    • +1

maybe call them and ask really nicely

    • +1

Harvey Norman and goodguys aren't even showing the Q80t 75" model on their sites right now.
And JB is listing it as $3,995 :o

      • +1

its actually rediculous how much more expensive it is.

Maybe i will get the 65…

  • +1

    $1,980 at videopro.

    • +3

      Shipping costs to WA $395

      Yeah nah

  • +1

It's a good price for a pretty good TV. Note that it's not the same as the US q80t, so the US reviews don't really apply and read up on some of the issues reported with this model including DSE on the whirlpool thread https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9nk781k3

Not saying don't buy one as it's a good price but do your research first.

    • Only 67 pages…

      • +4

You're spending 2k on a device, spending 15 - 30 mins to skim 67 pages to ensure you're getting the right device for you seems like a worthwhile investment to me.

        • WP forum definitely wouldn't ensure anything for me, nor OZB, with the contradictory information ITT.

          • @blorx: didn't you know everyones an expert over at whirlpool.

    • +2

Can you elaborate on the differences between US & AU version? The whirlpool thread is a bit long…

    • +3

Glad I read this. stopped me from buying.
The Dirty Screen Effect and vertical banding are really unacceptable for a TV of this price range. No wonder these are marked down.
Would have had instant regret had I got the TV with these problems and Samsung considers it within spec.

      • +1

I think if you're not sensitive to DSE it's a good buy at this price. The vertical banding seems to be a bit of a lottery as to the panel you get.

So many TV models seem to have issues this year, not sure if there's general QA issues due to corona and companies wanting to ship any stock or what it is.

  • This the best value to quality TV at this price range!?!

    • At this price I think so. Roughly equivalent to a Sony 9000h which is currently more expensive.

  • +1

Waiting for 75" to come back to BF prices. This is a good start.

Although, the Sammy Q series TV's with HDMI 2.1 ports are reported not doing 4K120Hz on PS5 :(

Alternative is the Sony X9000H with fewer local dimming zones but HDMI 2.1 works

    • +2

I had to get the X9000H as there was no stock of the Q80 75 inch until early Feb, best quote I got for the Q80 was $3600 vs 3k for the Sony.

      • +1

I got a 75 x9000h for 2.8 in november at the good guys. Wasn't part of their black friday sales so you should get a bit more.

      • where can you get 3K for sony x9000h? looking everywhere but the cheapest was $33xx on AppliancesOnline.

        • I got it at Good Guys commercial for $3k.

          • @NotAnAudiophile: fair enough… not via common channel

            • @RoyT: I believe it's around $3k at Costco but stock is short across the country at the moment

              • +1

@Hypnotoad: yeah can't find x9000h at costco website so I think it's out of stock.

        • Bing Lee will do a 75 inch X9000h for a touch under $3K plus you get a $250 Visa by redemption on TV's 75 inches and above

    • I got the 75" during BF from HN absolutely loving it.

  • +1

Less then half the price of the CX OLED.

This comment is meaningless, not sure why I’m typing it.

    • Yes, I was considering OLED, but the 77" is like sky high pricing.

  • Any inside knowledge on whether the TU8000s will drop as well in the coming weeks?

  • $2,274.35 in the samsung ERP store, decent deal considering.

  • First time poster - be kind

What are current best guess of the following 2021 new Samsung 65”

    https://www.avforums.com/news/samsung-announces-micro-led-an…

    (1) 2021 - Samsung Micro LED TV - 65”

    (2) 2021 - Samsung Neo QLED TV - 65”

    • +1

Micro led isn't coming in 65 inch this year, think the models are 88, 99 and 110. The 110 version is going to be US $156k…

Mini led 65 inch I'd guess would launch at about 3.5k-4k rrp for the 4k model… total guess

    • +2

Best guess in terms of what?
      Price? Release date?

I'd add a bit to both because of covid

Micro LED a lot more expensive than equivalent LG OLED
Neo QLED a lot more expensive than equivalent TCL mini LED

  • +3

Purchased about a week before Xmas, the panel had 2 dark spots from day one, now developed into 2 more spots, JB are still awaiting a Samsung rep to respond to replace the TV. Now I assume it will be sold out and I'll be waiting for a while for a replacement…. Plus its onsale for a cheaper price now… Pretty average support by Samsung
