we dont know when apple silicon is going to come out for the pro. This device is targets at professionals that may not be able to use ARM. Apple has yet to upadate the processor. you speak like i posted a 2017 pc when this is the very one they are still selling as latest model in 2021. The reason they use the xeon w idk. This is price is even cheaper than apple education discount by $200

No offence meant personally by my joke, there's nothing wrong with posting a deal like this

My main point is to let people know that this model was released in 2017 using parts from that generation (or older) which most people wouldn't realise unless they went deep into researching each model. It is indeed the current iMac Pro model that is manufactured to this day, but it uses last gen parts (i.e. GPU and TB controller) and is poor value compared to an upgraded 2020 iMac.

A regular iMac 2020 upgraded to top spec on Apple's website will be faster for less money while retaining almost every 'Pro' feature (e.g. 10Gbe ethernet, DCI-P3 5K display etc.) plus gaining some extra features like bluetooth 5.0

  • +12

The differences between this model and the standard iMacs are the following:
    - 4 thunderbolt ports instead of 2
    - removable stand to swap with vesa mount
    - last iMac model to run Mojave (32bit QuickTime support)
    - up to 18 core vs 10 core
    - more ram due to Xeon chip 256GB vs 128GB
    - 10Gbit onboard

This is the model Hollywood editors and and DIT dailies operators use due to the raw cpu power, ram, thunderbolt ports for external I/O devices and 32bit QuickTime support. It also has a colour-accurate screen for DCI P3 which is the colourspace digital cinema projectors use. This model was released before the new Mac Pro and was designed specifically for the media industry.

For everyone else this is a complete overkill unless you are that doctor or dentist that needs the huge Apple wank factor that comes with this device.

I've owned a Mac since 2013 and have never used the thunderbolt port 🤦

    • +5

This is the base model iMac Pro with 10 cores and still makes almost no sense in this configuration sold by the Good Guys even for editors etc.

You're getting only 10 cores (at lower frequency than the 2020 iMac), old slower graphics with half the Video RAM, old TB3 Alpine ridge ports, and 32GB of very hard to upgrade ram with this thing for more money than a top spec 2020 iMac. Both the regular iMac and iMac Pro come with the same DCI-P3 coverage 5K IPS LCD

Only the 32bit QT support is a potential benefit, and not even a consideration for many professional users in modern times (apart from some niche users)

If editors and other professionals need macOS and more power than a top custom spec 2020 iMac (which also has 10Gb ethernet and can be bought with a VESA mount) then they'd go to Apple and up-spec an iMac Pro to those faster 18 core CPUs and 256GB RAM that you outlined or get a Mac Pro.

no Band 28 … no deal

Two years ago it was a decently priced Mac (considering 1TB of the fastest SDD, 5K display, ECC RAM, Xeon CPU and a relatively good GPU).

These days… it does not make much sense to buy it unless you have very specific needs. Just wait for Apple Silicon in an iMac.

    • Im curious about the very specific needs…

      • a dummy with a lot of money who needs a computer.

  • +1

Not to discredit the OP but anyone looking to buy this very niche computer probably doesn’t care about the 10% discount.

Processor wise it will likely be outclassed many times over by the end of the year and be obsolete in less than three (IMHO).

We are in the midst of a CPU revolution, one that rarely comes along.

Oh, and the rumour is that the M1X will outperform current AMD equipped Apple configurations, either with discrete support or some new Apple magic.

    • The OP was probably just posting that it was a sale of an Apple product. There is not much thought to the post as only some of the specs were posted.

Your comments sound like the end of Hackintosh in the future is near.

      • I never really understood the draw of Hackintosh, to me the Apple hardware is essential to the Mac experience, otherwise I’d just go Windows.

I doubt Apple will drop support for x86/64 CPU’s at the three year mark, but they will lack important features and perform poorly by this time.

What I’m most interested to see is if Apple can pull off some type of on-die GPU miracle or be forced to support discrete GPU’s.

        • Yes, i agree, and also use Apple hardware. The attraction with Hackintosh is that it can be installed on a high performance low cost ($150) Xeon server via a Proxmox VM, and the server is able to be started remotely and accessed remotely from a web browser on a PC with internet access. This can come in handy if you are traveling light and distant, or in a workplace and the office only has PC's.

    • What AMD equipped apples? Apple Uses intel and their new M1 line exclusively.

      • +1

I assumed they were referring to the GPU

Only $7,800 extra for the 256GB version. Best to be future-proof.

    Is this a joke post?

    Thanks OP bought 10. :D

  • Can it run mine craft rtx?

  • Bargin

  • Lmfao

You can build a faster “Hackintosh” for a fraction of the price.

    • +1

And you can convert a Toyota MR2 to look somewhat like a ferrari

Edit: on second thought, your comment still stands lol

    • Most peoples work would rather pay for this than a Hackintosh, I know mine would.

      • Most people's work would realise this spec makes no sense and either buy a speced out iMac, or a Mac Pro.

        • Exactly, a $6.5k workstation with 32 GB RAM and a 10-core 3 GHz CPU does not make a lot of sense. Frankly, I am not even sure whether I would want to buy it for half the price.

There is definitely a market for specialised Macs. Mac Pro ( https://www.apple.com/au-hed/shop/buy-mac/mac-pro/tower?part… ) is $74377.99 completely speced out. I wonder if that market sees sufficient productivity increases to cover the price premium of that Mac…

The thing I love about that Mac Pro is that it starts at $9329 and its possible to buy a 'Pro Apps Bundle for Education' for $299.99 with it lol
Thats for all of those students and educators who like spending $9329 on a Mac that's bottom of that range… lol

  • This is surely the wrong service to post this as a "deal"

  • Absolutely would not buy one of these unless you have a very specific use case. The i9 are faster single core, and the new Apple silicone Macs coming out later this year will almost certainly be better in most ways…

    • Can't argue with that. Xeon W 10 core/20 thread is nice but it's not impressive in this price range, and with Apple replacing these with in-house designs I would be shocked if these didn't plummeting in price.

It will be interesting to see how Apple deals with memory on the work station chips, SoC might not be as easy if people are wanting 64gb+ and expandability.

  • Does it boot windows fast? Looking to replace my netbook.

  • Came for comments..not disappointed!

  • Will you even notice a pixel viewing difference over 4k?

I have a feeling it's the same thing with monitor fps.

Why buy a screen with 600fps when 144 looks the same

  • +1

Is this a good high yield investment?

  • This thing is going the way of the trash can Mac Pro… why do they still sell this thing in its current spec, parts from 4 years ago, yikes.

  • +4

Promised myself I would read only the first 5 comments but couldn't stop myself…

Keep em coming lads, lasses and everyone in between! The S21 Ultra has more RAM than this (not the same thing, I know) :)

Apple is ripping off and it's getting tough for parents to convince kids to stay away from all these - they want air pods, iPad, Mac Pro in secondary (phew) - hats off to their sales team for making it so lucrative.

    Bargain!….said no one ever.

  • Better be quick guys before it gets OzBargained!

  • I need this for hardcore web browsing

  • Will this be enough to run that free Three Kingdoms game from a few days back?

I'm genuinely confused how Apple can price a machine with a Vega 56 at over 6k.

    • I reckon sometimes they must just do it as a laugh, or take bets to see what they can get away with when they're setting some of their prices 😉

  • Rumors of a massive iMac redesign. I'd hold off and see what Apple has in store this year.

  • +1

No wonder Apple are worth $1.3Trillion.

Built in a Chinese sweatshop helps profits too.

Power efficiency would improve so much, you would have an ARM Mac just like the cool kids, with the added benefits of retropie and Linux!

    son: Tell me a joke
dad: Apple iMac Pro 27" Retina 5K Display 3.0GHz $6569
    son: I don't get it
    dad: Exactly

Apple is a joke only fools would buy into.

  • Why though? The regular x86 imac is faster and cheaper these days and the Apple silicon one is going to be faster with better logetivity/new design. Why did The Good Guys even have this model in its inventory? It's a niche model that most would gotten through Apple instead.

  • What a bargain lmao.

  • What a load of rubbish lol.

  • Thats insane you could build a 3090 build for less lol

  • Thank you OP, finally found a machine worthy to install minesweeper on. Looking forward to countless gaming hours ahead!
