  • If I have Chromecast gen 1 working fine with 2012 lg smart tv (the tv has YouTube built in, Plex client as well)… Worth to upgrade to this?
    Tv is fhd not 4k

    • load times will be greatly improved. when i upgraded from a gen 1 to a gen 2 there was already a noticeable improvement.

    • +2

Google TV Chromecast is awesome especially if you have Netflix, Stan, Disney or Prime Video.

You can also use a VPN with it to access international Netflix and download Kodi and Cinema HD to watch movies and shows for free.

If you like sports you can get Rising Tides on Kodi to watch Pay Per View events like big boxing and UFC fights for free. Also NBA basketball and other sports.

      • +2

Thanks for the rising tides tip, might try this in Kodi, currently using Live TvNet for live TV and cinemaHD for movies

        • I use ThopTV for live TV (need a good adblocker but a huge number of channels), while Stremio is the best for movies/tv series, and BeeTV also good.

      • hmm i dont have any streaming services except youtube premium

        • You have to sideload these streaming apps as it is not available from Google Play

      • Have you managed to find a way to use foxtel? I have foxtel go but noticed there's no app for it on Google TV

      • Hi mate just wondering about this Rising Tides,is it an app / I'm keen to watch some free UFC and Boxing PPVs thats for sure? Thanks much appreciated

    • Same question, I'm in the same boat. I don't need 4k but the ability to stream only using one screen allowance will be Aplus for streaming apps as with gen one you are using 2 everytime you use it (Chromecast & controlling device)
Also do all of these come with 6 months Netflix credit or is that only through Google directly?

      • +2

Netflix credit comes with Google direct only. Which is why the Google bundle is the best deal if you normally use Netflix, works out to be only $50 for the device.

        • if you normally use pay for Netflix

          FTFY

        • -1

In that case if I wanted Netflix and the new Chromecast it makes sense to just get it via Google?

      • 6 months Netflix credit is only from Google direct

      • You are better off using a Turkish VPN to get Netflix Premium for $7.50 per month

        • Are there any downsides with that route? Like with Youtube Premium by VPNing to India you end up with Indian video recommendations and ads.

          • +1

@Menzoberranzan: Have been using this for awhile and don't get any indian video recommendations, overtime it will replace the recommendation related to your viewing history.

          • @Menzoberranzan: correct. see above answer.
no downsides just lots of up up up sides :D

          • @Menzoberranzan: I definitely do not get Indian recommendations and I've been doing it for ages. Maybe you're watching Indian videos?

    • +1

      Definitely worth the upgrade.

    • IT's a top quality Plex client, but the big advantage is no longer requiring it to be casted from a device. Comes with a remote, and streams on its own, so you don't have to be playing around with your phone- especially great as presents for the parents/grandparents. The voice activation is actually great for them too.

      • oh you mean the device itself has plex client ? wow yeah i suppose it will be better than the client on LG tv (in term of speed, update, etc)

        • +1

yeah you can add the Plex app on there, and reassign the button on the remote to launch plex too. So my Netflix button opens Plex instead of Netflix now. It's great.

  • Think this would be a good replacement for my dying Vodafone TV.

    • I was thinking the same thing. If I can load side launch then I might move. The Vodafone TV has quite a few annoying quirks.

  • What else are we going to do with our points ?!

    • WISH gift cards

    • thats the point, we dont have many choices of using the points!

    • +1

      Domestic flights?

  • $8 delivery for me.

  • Thanks OP, I've been eyeing for this, didn't know I still have Qantas points. Grabbed one for $60 including delivery, just hate that slider to select how many points to use, I can't get it to select all points available.

  • Bought one, thanks OP.

Its also available for $79 with Latitude pay on Harvey Norman, for those without Qantas points…Pay 10 weekly payments of $7.90

    • I got declined from LatitudePay to take advantage of that deal. They wouldn't reveal the reason :/

  • +6

Not an amazing deal and just another waste of points given it's $76.82 + 2000 points (which I'd value at $20 when used for flights) + $8 delivery. Works out at $104.82 total.

The Google Store has them for $99 including free express delivery or you could get one from jb hi fi (if able to pick up) using 5% off discounted gift cards (free to obtain via Suncorp) for just $94.05

    • Very valid point. Probably comes down to individual preference as to how much you value your points right now. I ended up getting one because when i added the item to my cart it took an extra 10% off for being a Qantas plus member (probably a previous OzB deal lol) so the total including delivery came to 14,358. I had to buy one of these anyway and right now I'd rather spend the points than the $99. Also having Argentinian Netflix makes me ineligible for the bonus Netflix credit deal otherwise that would definitely be the better option.

      • Same. I even ended up buying other items on sale. 😅

    • i dont and will never use QFF to fly so 2 years ago i already sold 200k QFF… very lucky

  • bought with $8 delivery duh…..

  • Has anyone managed to connect Foxtel Go without the use of the app via your phone? I see the app isn't available on Google TV directly. Is there another way to do this?
I've seen people mention Kodi but I'm unsure how to add it

    • Haven't tried it but looks like this one is specifically for android tv?

  • +1

    "Delivery fee: PTS 1,200
    Total: PTS 15,820"
    to ACT for me

Was able to get it without having to pay in AUD for delivery and no way to use my paints anyways. Thanks OP

    "Estimated delivery: 10 February 2021"

  • I got a tv box on my TV. Android 6. Would this be an upgrade or not?
Only thing I can't play is 10bit anime crap from my nas.

  • Can you install and play roblox in this?

  • got notification something coming from jbhifi by Toll.
    is this it ?

  • Has anyone received their Chromecast yet?

    • +1

Yes. Today. Sydney South West. By toll courier. They sent SMS yesterday but didn't come, this morning received same SMS then it was delivered few hours later

      • Thanks mate, my estimated delivery date is on 10th, so hopefully mine will arrive next week.

        • Hey mate have you received notification that it's been sent yet? I ordered on the 4th and similiar to you it says Expected delivery date was the 10th.
          Cheers

          • @anaphylactoid: Just got my shipping notification this morning when its expected delivery date was the 9th

            • @KeeperX: Just received mine today, it was from Jbhifi store and delivered via Toll.

  • Problem setting it up. Always stuck after sign in process in my home app.. I can continue setup on tv but no Chromecast on my home app at the end. Is this normal?

    • Just finished setting up and it went smoothly for me.

      • Shows up on your google home app? I think my issue is because I use Google account that's was setup using some random indian address (to get YouTube indian premium). I already changed everything back to Australia but still… Hmmmm

        • Yes I can control it from Google Home, I also have Youtube premium from India, maybe try to factory reset and try again.

  • The Qantas website is annoying, I only have 2400 points and yet I cannot slide the slider point to be exact that amount to reduce the price…
