  • Wow; great deal OP!

  • So now restricted to 8 gift card redemtion per transaction?

  • Size aside …

Dumb question would it be worth swapping up from the AW3420DW to this one if the change over was about $800 ?

    • +1

      No

    • +2

I had the aw3420dw for about 1 year and upgraded to aw3821dw last month.

Aside from the slightly bigger size, it's not a massive upgrade. 144hz vs 120hz, hdr600 etc.

I think main thing I enjoyed is higher res, so more pixels to use for productivity when WFH.

      • +1

You didn't happen to get a side by side pic of the two? I recently got the aw3420dw as well and was disappointed how small it was (came from 40inch curved, and went to the 34 for a performance gain, but didn't realise how much i'd miss those vertical pixels)

  • 3840 x 1600 is QHD?

    • QHD refers to the latter number, 1440p for x:9, 1600 for x:10 ratio

      • +5

QHD specifically refers to "Quad-HD" or the equivalent of 1280x720, hence 2560x1440.

I've seen this resolution referred to as UW-QHD (UW for ultra-wide) but honestly I'd rather we just put the real resolution in the title.

        • -1

Yeah that's true, but it's like technical usage vs daily usage, using the term qhd just allow people to understand the the ppi is equivalent to a "normal qhd" monitor

        • +1

          UWQHD is 3440 X 1440
This resolution is referred to as UWQHD+

  • I have this monitor and it's a nice unit, my only complaint is that the monitor controls are so far back. It's a pain to change input sources.

  • Good price!

  • What sort of desk setup do people have with these size monitors? how far back do you have to sit to get the most out of the screen and not look like Mr Magoo? ?

    • My desk is 80cm deep, I mount it close to the wall and just sit normally. Prob about 90-100cm from screen to eyes.

I came from a 34" ultrawide, so didn't take much to adjust to a 38.

      • Which 34" UW? Other than wider, do you notice much else?

        • +1

Had the Aw3420dw for 1 year and upgraded to he aw3821dw last month.

In terms of everything else, its very similar and feels familiar. The aesthetic, buttons at the back, menu etc. It's basically identical to the 34 but a bit bigger lol

I'm trying the HDR atm, which is supposed to give better contrast, but occasionally the backlight adjusts and is a bit distracting.

          • @chew_chew: I got the 34 and I really love it. Mine might be the model before your old one though, it has a silver back instead if the white one.

    • I'm using a 40 inch 4k monitor (same width) on a 60cm deep table, with the screen about 45cm from the edge I sit on, and it's very comfortable.

The DPI is effectively the same as a FHD 24 inch monitor at the same distance, only you have more screen space left and right (and up and down in my this case).

So there's a litte bit more head turning, but you can position your most used apps near the centre.

  • Damn tempting. Is this the cheapest it has been and is there a better alternative Samsung?

    • No Samsung alternative, but this is the same panel as the LG 38GN950

      • LG seems to be about $1000 more if you can even find it…. I got the 38" DELL one on the $1700 deal, very happy :)

      • Thanks. The Alienware does fit my upcoming white build omg so tempting.

      • Does this have the exact same panel that's in the LG? The price difference is staggering.

    • I would recommend 32 inch samsung g7, it's 1440p and runs at 240hz, you would need a really beefy set up to get over 120fps with this

      • That's a VA panel though, it just doesn't compare.

        • Nah, I came from 27inch ips and samsung is way better, ips is way overatted…. For gaming anway

        • +1

The VA panel in the G7 is better though, it's faster and has 3 times the contrast

          • @cille745: I'm not going to get into an IPS va VA war hehe, but a monitor this size is also ideal for work so IPS is much welcomed.

            • @Ryanek: Have you tried g7 vs this ips? I was in your boat before, ips all the way but boy was I wrong, this panel is minty and much cheaper

              • @botchie: For work… I'm all about color accuracy.

      • I got the 3080 so it should be mint?

    • Some people would cross shop this and the G9 (49inch) and while it's better at cheapest it's still $550 more.

  • It wont let me use more than $1500 worth of gift cards, anyone else having this issue?

    • I can only apply 8 gift cards plus code, how many can you apply?

      • Max 8 on Ebay

        • Then he's got 7 $200 and 1 $100? It's been a long time since I've seen $200 gift cards on ozb, I've got only 8 $100 which is quite annoying, still can't make up my mind onboard.

      • Max you can pay on Gift Cards is $1500

        • Yes but with limit of 8 gift cards you need at least 7x$200 to reach $1500 all I’ve got from woolis are all $100 ones

  • +4

Got one from the original eBay fiasco late last year (no mouse still either, grrr). Fantastic monitor, but word of caution, unless you really want to get all fancy with the LED lighting options, don't install the Alienware app from the app store; there's an unresolved bug that sit there chewing up 20% of your CPU no matter what and despite being around for a while, there's still no fix (other than to just remove the app like I did).

    • Thanks for this. Do you use yours for gaming and what GPU do you have as well as FPS for the games you play. Thanks

      • +1

I have a DP1.4 8k capable switch that I switch between my PC (nothing fancy, runs a GTX1070Ti) and a Surface Pro. Fantastic for productivity and games look amazing and are smooth (haven't measured FPS though), although obviously can't do the latest at Ultra settings at full resolution with it. You can only do 144hz through the Displayport input, and if you want 10-bit colour, it's limited to 120hz. Only has 1 DP input which is frustrating, but otherwise a fantastic monitor. Can't hear the fan either, even on the hottest of days over the summer.

The app I was referencing is the Alienware Control Center btw.

    • Found this issue as well. Uninstalled it and somehow Windows in it's wisdom decided I needed to install it again. Still chewed up 20% CPU when the app doesn't even work. So uninstalled it again.
      I'm running this monitor with a 3070. It's a beast!
Haven't quite found the sweet spot for settings in Destiny 2 though. Darks are really dark.

    • Would that be the Alienware Command Centre? Downloaded it from the Dell website and I haven’t noticed this issue

    • Thanks for this information - I wasn't aware of this. I checked my Alienware Control Center and it was running at approximately 10%. So I removed the program.

  • Thoughts … enough of an upgrade from a Acer Predator X34?

I read some rumors about more >30" OLED panels for monitors coming out this year (rather than 48" TV's)

    • Depends how much you use it, and how your financial position is.

I went from 34" VA panel to this panel (in the LG version) and it was a big big step up.

      • I would use it a lot. I can afford it, but …

Some more reading suggests LG may be putting out a 42" OLED TV this year. With custom rez for gaming would be like a 39" UW.

        Going to hold out

    • I upgraded from a X34P, definitely worth it.

Only downside is lack of DSC so its either 10bit/120hz, or 8bit/144hz.

      • This is why we need DP 2.0

    • I upgraded to this from an X34 and this completely blows the x34 away. Its brighter, sharper and better in every way.

    • LG has the 4k ultrafine oled pro but its only 60hz and will cost probably $2k+ when it eventually releases

    • +1

      I came from a Acer X34 (non-P) to a LG 38 G.

It's not going to give you the wow factor (say, going to from a 27 inch to a 34) but I definitely felt it worth the upgrade, and I paid 2800.

I'm not sure if the Dell panel is as good as the LG's (I would expect it to be better in previous years but not so sure nowadays) I'd definitely jump on it at this price.

It's easy the best panel I've owned, and the only thing that will get me upgrading is a OLED 43. And I think that's a few years off yet.

  • I just can't decide if I want 4K for eventual PS5 gaming or to leave the PS4/PS5 connected to the TV.

    • +1

I have the LG CX 65 connected to the PS5 and thinking of waiting for the 38-40 inch OLEDS for PC gaming. It might come this year according to CES.

      • Yeah I'm just gonna have to be patient. I'm just desperate for a second screen for work

  • Is the Acer Predator X34 GS (new model) a good alternative if I am happy with a 34 inch ultrawide 1440p ips? This would be $1499 at mwave.

    • Yep, although the upgrade to this would be worth it if you don't mind stepping down to 144hz from 180hz

  • very very tempted…

    • Just do it. I went from an ancient 30" Dell to the stand 38 model (U3818) and that was quite a step up.

      • Ive been waiting for the u3818 to go on sale. Tomcat173, would there be much difference between this AW3821DW and the U3818DW?

        • +1

Overall I don't think there's much difference. All the fundamental bits are basically the same eg overall size, quality of the panel, menus, ports etc.

The only differences seem to be physical depth (the U3818 stand looks like its much shallower, so the screen is marginally further away from you when you stick it on the edge of a desk)… and the 144hz refresh rate / sync technology, which is only really noticeable in really fast FPS games. Depends on how much gaming you intend to do, and what type of games you play.

          • @Tomcat173: thanks! I am purely business, but im sure my son would want to test the G-Sync feature!
            Is the curve the same?

      • Have just ordered 34 inch VA from overseas. Tried S2721DGF with nano IPS and i'm over with this panel. Color being good but contrast is a disaster.

  • Seems like the Rtings review (The only one with actual measurements at the moment) is up on early access if anyone pays for that. Though looking at the response time measurements the panel does seem a little slow, definitely slower than the LG equivalents it steals its panel from

    • +2

If you're tossing up between this or the LG, at this price I'd get the Dell.

      • Definitely for the money, I'd agree

        • and better warranty

  • Thanks I just bought I was really considering the LG 34GN850 but this came along…

  • I have a Dell UP3216Q (From previous Ozbargain deal) is it worth the change?

  • Is it possible to upgrade the warranty/support using Dell’s eBay store? I purchased extended 5y ProSupport with my AW3420 and I’d like to do the same if switching it out…

    • I asked this of Limaa during the eBay fiasco in December and he actually said you can call Dell direct and purchase the extended support directly from them for an eBay order. I haven't tried though so can't say what it costs.

    • Comes with 3 years as default. You can add extended support to any Dell item even after sale. Dell loves taking money for warranty.

Just quote the service tag number of the monitor.

      • Do you have to do this straight after the order, or can you wait to receive the Monitor before extending the warranty?

  • 2 Good 27in screens n pocket the change, or this….

  • +1

Ahh why tempt me again? I got through the first Limaa deal and now this again. The temptation :/

  • I miss BF2 on my old 20" CRT monitor (

  • Damn I missed out on the code. When will this be backkkkkkk

  • -1

Just wait for $1500. Let the frenzy begin!

  • I purchased yesterday estimated delivery 4 to 17 March!!! Shipping from US? Or managing my expectations given potential delays from covid??

    • They take orders before they've even manufactured them

  • +2

Rtings review is now up. Seems pretty much as expected for a Nano IPS panels, terrible contrast, decent response time. Still a good option for the price
