  • Good price, can anyone that bought advise if the TV is any good ? Thanks

    • +1

This is a clone of the last 40" they had. Good image quality, unbearable sound quality. Use external speakers.

      • +4

        unbearable

Lol I misread that as unbeatable

  • +6

Great price. Much prefer "dumb" TVs

    • Care to share why?

      • +2

Most of the time it's because of security. It's connection to the internet that had it's protection designed and coded on the cheap.

Also they can be flogging your data.

      • +7

With a "dumb" TV you are getting exactly what you see and not paying for bells and whistles you don't want or need and buttons that occupy (and confuse) limited space on a huge Remote Control.

If you want to bolt on you can choose your platform, device and your spend and select an Interface and Remote you can live with.

Also, you are stuck with whatever is native to the TV at time of manufacture and updates that may not work or ever get released.

I'm happy to use my AppleTV 4K because Apple will keep the OS working.

  • Does anyone know whether this has composite/RCA video input? The specs listed by Auspost only mention HDMI and USB and unfortunately I couldn't find a manual

there's some oddness with the composite sharing the component but having component is rare these days

$179 is as low as it gets

      coax and 3.5mm out too

      • Ah, nice sleuthing! I didn't think to check places like Gumtree/eBay.

Thanks for that, really appreciate it. Definitely interesting input configuration, and also the digital audio over coax (I'm assuming it's digital given the orange colour coding on the plug). Hasn't seen one of those in yonks!

In any case, at this price, I'm pretty tempted to give it as go!

  • +1

Great to see it's back in stock, didn't end up purchasing the first time but I'm tempted to this time

  • +3

I don't believe these sales on AU post anymore because when I bought it at $49 they emailed me that the supplier does not have enough stock. That was just 2 weeks ago and now they are selling it again.

    • +1

I think that was a different model then this one.?
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/599328

    • +3

They don't have stock, at that price.

      • Accepting payment without intending to supply
Under the Australian Consumer Law, businesses must not accept payment for products or services if:

they do not intend to supply them
they intend to supply materially different products or services
they know, or should have known, they would not be able to supply the products or services within the timeframe indicated or if no timeframe was provided, within a reasonable time.
This part of the law is not intended to cover businesses who genuinely try to meet supply agreements, for example, if:

the failure to supply was due to something beyond their control, including the act or omission by another person
they exercised due diligence and took reasonable precautions.

@pennypincher98: Australia Post: We (don't) deliver.

          • +4

@pennypincher98: Terms and conditions cannot override protections provided by the ACL.

If it's a one time thing, no big deal. If it keeps happening, it's a problem despite their T&C.

            • @DogGunn: Yes, well said. :+)

            • @DogGunn: Try telling that to The Good Guys who seem to make a mistake in every catalogue..
And most of them were about the switch.

              • @pennypincher98: They and JB constantly get raked over the coals for assorted breaches. While I see that the GG often have errors in their catalogue, they at least go all and publish the error in newspapers and their newsletters. They don't try and sweep it under the rug.

But if you really wanted to, I'm sure you could make a complaint to the ACCC about it.

          • @pennypincher98: TOS cannot contradict laws! Another example of this is "Warranty void if removed" stickers, which in Australia do not void your warranty (company would need to prove your modification caused the issue).

            • @holisticboy: Contract for selling a good is contigent to both the buyer and seller agreeing on the price. By posting an offer obviously in error, a company would go down the lines of they didn't agree to the price.
I would say they exercised due diligence.

Good luck trying to fight it out in court.

              • @pennypincher98: Auspost.com.au sent a Confirmation of your purchase on 21/1/2021 and took their sweet time until 27/1/2021 to send "Information regarding your Australia Post Online Shop order" on 27/1/2021.

In the 27/1/2021 E-mail Auspost.com.au did not advance the offer was obviously in error on price, rather they advanced that "We've just been notified by our supplier that the following product(s) from your order is out of stock and cannot be fulfilled as additional stock isn't able to be sourced."

They actually offered goods that they implied they had ownership and custody of, indicated the price was a "Clearance" Item and Price and agreed it included "Standard Delivery"

  • Any cheapest way to have bluetooth audio output in this TV?

  • I bought the Chromecast with Google TV 4K in another deal. What’s the cheapest bang for the buck dumb tv for that? It doesn’t need to be smart tv right as I got the Google TV for that?

    • This is pretty darn cheap for a 40in unit. I in no way would expect it to be the greatest set, but you'll be very hard pressed to find another 40in Full HD unit for this price.

RE the Chromecast with Google TV, yes that's right, you don't need to use it with a smart TV as the Chromecast will provide the smarts. You'll just need to plug it into an HDMI port, set it up to connect to your home WiFi network and off you go.

Keep in mind the Chromecast with Google TV is capable of 4K video, which you won't be able to take advantage of with this set as it is only FHD resolution. Possibly not a huge issue especially if you're looking for bang for buck, but it's something to be mindful of.

    • Any idea if I can use the bluetooth audio out of the Chromecast with Google TV, while not using Google TV i.e. watching tuner TV, or another input?

    • As long as it has HDMI in with HDCP (monitors may not work), should be fine.

  • swap the HDMI ports for USB and it might be useful.. Wheres the soniq 40" dammit.

    • Nothing a cheap USB hub won't cure

  • At my local Aussie post they have a 32 inch Thompson for $119

  • +2

Great deal OP - ordered x 2; extended family will be so happy with their ‘dumb’ gifts !

  • -3

WHY EVEN bother with junk home brand FHD TV may as well go back 10 years

    • It's good for kids/video games

    • +2

Oh sorry money bags, would you like to fund me a new TV that meets your standards?

      • -3

I just bought a 43 inch 4K TCL 2nd hand for $250 still with original warranty and books, looks brand new.

        • +4

There can be a guy giving away a 50 inch 4K TV next door that's never been opened for free but that doesn't mean that no-one else in the country should pay for one.

          • -4

@pennypincher98: I'm saying look around do your research before you pay for old school technology

            • +1

@Willco88: I'm looking for a cheap bedroom TV to play my Xbox on which maxes out at 1080p, not a top of the line entertainment system. Different strokes for different folks.

            • @Willco88: At this size 4K will make bugger all difference and the LCD panel technology is the same as most TVs.

    • +3

You got me … But then again I like collecting junk, esp if I can pass it off as a value-add to the extended family; win-win !

      P.S.
新年好 / 新年好 (Xīnnián hǎo) to all of our Chinese extended family …

      or is it:
      新年快乐 / 新年快樂 (Xīnnián kuàilè)

Best wishes for the year of the Ox on this CNY Day.

    • +1

Add a firestick and it does everything my 65 inch Hisense does….

This tv only uses 30watts/hr… Bang for buck is unbeatable!

  • Is it black & white or colour?

    • If you've got monochromacy every TV is black and white

  • Great for monitoring security cams!!!!!

    • Or you could even CCTV stock control over product availability… lol

  • +1

Just a reminder that this appears to qualify for 3.75% cashback via ShopBack (search under 'AusPost' or go directly via www.shopback.com.au/aus-post-online).

Whether it actually tracks or pays out is perhaps another question, but if you're going to make the purchase anyway, it's probably worth the extra few clicks.

  • anyone know if it has HDMI-ARC ?
(i.e. connect to a sound system with HDMI cable)

Looking for a cheap TV but have a requirement of no extra remote to control the speakers…

    • I also want to know if CEC is available. I saw a manual that stated it did have one but not sure if it was the correct manual.

      • This Thomson model has ARC through HDMI3. So it's likely the model sold at Australia Post also has it.

Refer to page 5 with the rear ports diagram. It's another model but it may be the same having ARM through all the other models.

        https://drive.google.com/file/d/1atD_LClMhvD32g2a1ioS4mVylYt…

        • Good find, but that's a smart TV with a LAN connection so it doesn't necessarily mean this "dumb" TV has the same HDMI capability.

I tend to assume if it's not listed in the specs it doesn't have it. ARC gets left out of a lot of the low-end TVs I've been looking at unfortunately!

  • Has anyone seen these available in-store for this price or is it only available for online purchase and delivery?

    • Apparently online only price.

  • Surprised to see it is still in stock. May be most people have already bought the big W ones, 55 inch.

  • +1

Thank you OP! I've been looking for a cheap HDTV for a couple months, snagged it!

  • +4

This is such a bad TV, but functional for price to form.

We bought it for the exercise room and it gets almost daily use but there's this weird light that emits out the top of it. The sound is horrendous, as expected, so it's hooked up to external speakers. Picture isn't too bad. Finally, a decent meat pie weighs more than it so if you want to question it's quality then you'd be on the right path. Hook it up, hook it in and leave it there.

This is every bit a $179 TV, no more and no less.

    • I like the way you talk lol

  • +1

Just received my delivery today, and…

They sent a 1080p Thomson Projector instead of the Thomson 40" LED I ordered and paid for.

Has anyone else's turned up yet, and if so did they get an unexpected item swap?

    • +1

That's a pretty bad stuff up. Hope they sort it out for you without too much hassle.

I'm still waiting on mine, but nothing so far. I haven't received any communication apart from the initial order confirmation email.

      • I didn't even receive one, which should have been the first warning sign.

If they try to make that my problem and want me jumping through hoops, I'll just organise a chargeback instead.

Very disappointing if it means missing out on the tv…

  • +3

Purchased this TV to use as a monitor from HDMI PC.

    1. Picture quality was quite bad, even using the Personal mode in which Brightness, Contrast, Colour, etc can be adjusted, but when I changed Aspect Ratio to "Point-to-Point" (which isn't mentioned in the manual) suddenly the picture looked very good. Unfortunately Point-to-Point seems to disable Colour control, but apart from a little too much green in the picture, overall colour intensity was good and quite natural looking. Don't ask me how an aspect ratio control improves picture quality dramatically (unless it passes RGB input signal to screen directly without conversions for image adjustment).

    2. No Backlight control, but I think Contrast serves the same function (ie peak white level). Brightness control is black level. Auto/PC/Video black threshold adjustment.

    3. Colour balance a bit off even with Warm in the colour setting (Cool, Natural, Warm) but the manual mentions a User setting where RGB can be individually adjusted. My TV doesn't have a User setting in the colour control menu and so I have been unable to calibrate it better.

    4. Sound awful.

    5. Poor off-axis colour rendition (as expected from a 4000:1 native contrast VA LCD panel)

    6. CVBS/Y Pb Pr and VGA inputs

    7. 200 cd/m2 max luminance

Overall produces a pleasing picture in Personal mode with aspect ratio set to Point-to-Point and a few minor Brightness/Contrast/Sharpness and other setting tweaks. Sharpness should be set to 0 for no additional sharpening.

With the addition of RGB adjustment and Colour control, this should make a good 1080p monitor for the price.

Haven't tested out video input yet.

  • Finally I got the delivery and the power plug is broken. There is nothing in the package to protect it.

  • Video input works same as PC input.

It seems that Aspect Ratio set to Point-to-Point is kind of a direct input like a Game mode, bypassing all picture processing functions except Brightness, Contrast and I think Colour Temperature (ie Sharpness and Colour controls have no effect).

Makes a decent monitor for the price.
