    • This is like the time Office Works tried to sell me opened AirPods. No thanks.

      • Get them to swap?

        • I just refused it at the counter and he went and got me a sealed box.

          • @PainToad: Are they fooling the customer? Which branch you were in?

    • Which OW branch?

  • So what's going on are none of these sealed? Every new phone is sealed when you buy it, so are all these not sealed as never heard of this before.
You mention of sim faulty are you saying they unsealed all boxes to change out a sim or is the sim peck attached to box?
Myself and wife grabbed these but yet to pick up.
I was going to say to wife when she picks them both up to make sure they are sealed.
Now i have more reason to.
Is everyone who got one got it unsealed?

I be pretty annoyed if its unsealed and with finger prints and no protection film on screen this rings alarm bells its a return?
I thought stores where big on break seal cant return? But yet your given one like it already.

  • And what's the story on warranty? What is the warranty 12 months? From date of purchase to first switched on.
Im confused what you guys are saying about warranty.

    • OW told me they took out faulty aim card from box and mobile is brand new. However it can't explain why the phone has no protection film and USB cable was not wrapped up. They said the warranty is from purchase date but need bring back to OW for warranty issue.

      • So phone is new yet box not sealed and no film over screen and cable not wrapped sounds to me someone was playing around with it or returned it change of mind..
Thought when you break open a box you cant return unless faulty?
Are all of these like this from ow? As i expect mine and wife's to be sealed in box. Just like any ipad or other phones purchased in past.

      • OW told me they took out faulty aim card from box

I highly doubt the sim would be in the box. More likely taped to the outside of it. Sounds like return to me.

Thought when you break open a box you cant return unless faulty?

Could be “battery life not good enough, give me money back”.

      • I got one. The SIM card should be separate with the iPhone original sealed box. What they were saying is obviously not true.

    Ain’t this deal now expired?

  • Just picked this up from Castle Hill OW so deal has not expired yet. Couldn't get through on the phone, but website showed "Low Stock" - took a chance and went there and sure enough, they had some left…

  • Have not opened these yet to set up or had them unlocked yet, looking for a sturdy case. Is it true that most screen protectors dont fit this phone? Has there not been curved screens on iphones before so why are many having issue with screen protectors on them.
Im right in saying this only comes with cable no charger?
So this phone does fast charge right? is it the cable or the plug that does the fast charge? And what is supplied?.
I have ipad so probably could use the plug from that. If its a fast charge plug i need where is best cheapest to buy genuine
I have noticed there are some wireless chargers also anyone got one or any on a deal or the one to get that dont cost an arm and a leg.

    • Reckon the screen curve is little bit different to 6/7/8 series. That’s why it won’t fit perfectly if you buy those full screen protector for previous gens.

      • So what's recommended

    • Just picked up mine today from Officeworks Wangaratta. No stock in Albury or Wodonga.
Just bought a Spigen Tough Armor case on Amazon for it.

      • I was thinking of this case but still leaves screen exposed and seems many have tried many screens either difficult to fit or dont fit good due to curve on screen.
I was probably going to get a fully in closed case with its on screen protector.
The case you mention is supposed to be good and watched some vids but to me just feels exposed with screen not covered.

        • I also bought a Spigen screen protector after reading the positive reviews

          https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0881MNHKP/ref=ppx_od_d…

          • @dts2956m: Bit expensive for a screen protector not read reviews yet but looks like it maybe a prefect fit and will that be compatible with any spigen case as they have ones tough armour.

The case im after is supposed to be as good it not better than otterbox cases but in saying that even they dont have full protection.
The one i was thinking of has all over protection with a protector that fits on front.
Similar to survivor cases from griffin.
Yes they are slightly bulky but not too bad.

This protector you mention combined with spigen top quality case would cost overall $50 for both.

            • @bwatt72: yeah it was $50 for the case and glass protector.
I have always protected my phones with Spigen cases - wouldn't use anything else

              • @dts2956m: What spigen case did you go for?

                • @bwatt72: This time I went for the Tough Armor. Was $30 free post on Amazon

                  • @dts2956m: This was one i almost went for but still needed a screen protector.
Being used to all in one cases with built-in screen protector with previous samsung phones and ipads i had try get something similar.
Was very little for the 2020, i used to get the griffin ones.
I went for the supcase unicorn beetle pro with holster has plenty of good reviews and a vid on you tube these guys took it to the extreme in testing.
Only thing i might want to add is an extra screen protector on the actual phone as a back up, but not sure if its possible as case is a tight fit.
That's if there is a screen protector out there that works as read so many have issues getting right ones.
I could just use its own case protector but i have always had ones on under griffin cases similiar.

Cheers OP! I picked one up but the box was opened, they said it was only to add the Vodafone SIM. However when I got home and opened it, there was no plastic film on the phone, the charging cable was unraveled and there was dirt and fingerprints on the screen. On top of that the SIM they provided with it had expired years ago lol. Went back the same day and returned it for a new sealed box and fresh SIM. Happy days!

    • Glad it worked out wife picked up mine and her one said to make sure they are sealed they was with sim stuck on top of box.
Not opened them yet going to get case first then see about an unlock.

  • +1

I paid $397 for one today, was a customer return but still had the seal on the phone but box was open. They mentioned it was reset by Apple and the warranty was fresh from when I activated it. Went home, inputted the serial and they were right - started when I activated it. Not bad for $397, I've been a long term Vodafone customer (15+ years continuously), let's see if they can unlock it for free…

  • ok, I've just paid for the unlocking at Vodafone site: These are the instructions:

    IPHONE UNLOCK PROCEDURE
Please wait 2 business days for your iPhone to be unlocked, then follow the steps below.
If you have a non-Vodafone Australia SIM card:
    Remove your current SIM card.
Insert the new SIM card and turn on your device. Your device will activate.
If you have a Vodafone Australia SIM card:
    Back up your iPhone.
After you've made a backup, erase your iPhone.
Restore your iPhone from the backup you've just made.
After your iPhone has been successfully unlocked, you should be able to make and receive calls with the non-Vodafone Australia SIM card. You will need reception and phone credit with the different network provider.

So, no unlock code? just wait two days and remove and reinsert the sim?

    • Yep

      • Is 48 hours wait a minimum? Just wanting to know when I should start removing and reinserting my Telstra sim,,,

        • I got my SE on Wednesday lunchtime, and at Friday lunchtime it still is not accepting my Boost SIM

    • Same here, requested and paid Wednesday night and still locked when tested via the first method below:

If you have a non-Vodafone Australia SIM card:
      * Remove your current SIM card.
      * Insert the new SIM card and turn on your device. Your device will activate.

If you have a Vodafone Australia SIM card:
      * Back up your iPhone.
      * After you've made a backup, erase your iPhone.
      * Restore your iPhone from the backup you've just made.

  • thanks op. grabbed one today

  • Anyone know why it takes 2 days to unlock? I thought these things are all automated? Do they need humans to run some checks?

    • I don’t know but it’s a pita.

You can still use everything else other than cellular, right?

    • was wondering why as well. I am now 24 hours since I got it and unlocked it, still hasn't been unlocked.

Nowadays NBN is transferred in minutes, so I would expect it shouldn't take two business days unless Vodafone want it to

  • yeah, everything else works, as long as you don't have a unsupported sim inserted.

  • Is anybody else having problems activating the simcard came with the phone? The production date is October 2018, seems to be expired already! pfff

  • Vodafone are taking longer than 2 Business Days to unlock the handsets.

I spoke to them and they were apologetic, but said just keep hitting refresh on the page that says "How to unlock your device" until it says 'UNLOCKED'

    • Tim Apple wouldn't be very impressed with this customer experience.

    • Which page you're referring to buddy? a Vodafone or Apple webpage?

  • Umm.. I ordered 3 phones yesterday. Picked up today.
My optus sim is working straight out of the box?

    Anyone experience the same?

  • you might have gotten lucky! Pop your IMEI number in the Vodafone unlock page and see if it comes up as "Unlocked"

    • +1

      It says IMEI not found

    • Got lucky with all 3? that's some serious luck in that case

        • I don't think so, it had vodafone starter pack attached to the box.
Any way to confirm if this is actually unlocked?
I'm able to make and get calls using an optus sim.

          • +1

@Siddo90: Definitely unlocked then. Somehow you got lucky.

          • @Siddo90: Yours would be unlocked, optus SIM cards wouldn’t work if it was but if you want to confirm go to settings-general-about-carrier lock. It will say no sim restrictions if it’s unlocked.

    • Can you check phone is locked or unlocked using imei on vodafone site or do you need to check on phone itself. Im waiting on a case and couple or other things then will look into unlocking.
Dont think myself or i will have been so lucky to get unlocked phones.

      • When I put my imei number on Vodafone page, it couldn’t find it

      • the IMEI should be on the Vodafone sim package stuck to the iphone box, so you should be able to check without opening the box

        • Dont you mean the imei on the phone box as its the phone you want to see is unlocked not the sim.
I will not have any interest in Vodafone as have my own carrier.

          • @bwatt72: the IMEI is on both the phone box and sim package.

            • @dinkyfish: I not looked at mine but suerly sim is different from phone imei, and it's the phone you be checking for locked or unlocked?

              • @bwatt72: They must print the phone imei on the SIM package… Links the SIM to the phone I guess?

  • Are these fake as some reviews seem to say it is and the original price is even much lower than apple and most stores.

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/apple-5w-usb-power-adapter-appl…

Can a plug/charger used for an ipad be used on phone.

    • Yes the ipad one would be perfect.

Don’t bother with the kogan one, you can use any USB power adapter and 5w is quite low these days.

      • Ok cool i thought i read somewhere that ipad charger was much more watts and using it often was not good for the phone.

  • +3

can anyone confirm success with unlocking yet? I paid for unlock Weds night and am still waiting….

    • Not here, same situation as you. I'm also interested to know if when unlocked the website will update to show "unlocked" - as that's easier to check than swapping sim cards!

      • yeah, I'm also wondering if we need to restart/reboot the phone?

        • When I put a Optus sim card in it definitely starts the process of checking with Apple activation servers (& reports no go) so I'm not sure restart is required….

      • +1

        That's what I'm assuming from dts2956m above. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10199268/redir

I phoned vodafone yesterday about two unlocks from Wednesday - the CSR sent an email to their unlocking team, but I haven't heard anything since.

I'll follow up again this afternoon, but I'm guessing nothing will change until Monday. Will post if I hear anything new.

    • +1

And a quick update after an hour dealing with three CSRs: TLDR - The unlocking team doesn't work weekends, so if you haven't unlocked already, you are probably waiting until Monday at least.

Top marks to the 3 CSRs I dealt with - all three tried to resolve the issue within the limits of their knowledge and authority, and the tech support CSR looked for workarounds with no luck.

Zero marks for Vodafone corporate, who appear to be under staffing their unlocking team and also need to get their training on the iPhone unlock rolled out to the support teams (all three were expecting an unlock code and hadn't heard of the Apple activation servers).

      Fingers crossed for Monday then!

Have bought 2 of these, being the dutiful son that I am. first one at $547 and second one at $497. Second one was unlocked within 36 hours and OW are refunding me $50 on the first one due to price drop being within 30 days of purchase. Not their official policy they said, more like 7 days. But it covers the unlock fee so I’m happy

    • Wow so one unlocked other not worth checking for sure.
How will i know when i come to set up just enter sim card into phone and if works im good.

      • To clarify, both were unlocked at $50 a pop. One took 2 business days as advertised, the other about 36 hours. And yes you will know if it’s unlocked when you put your non Voda sim in

        • Lol yes read it wrong.

    • Nice work! Question - for the one you had unlocked by Vodafone, does the "unlock code" show as "unlocked" or "locked" now on this page? https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/

      • +1

        Unlocked

        • Thanks!

          • @dfadkxk09: I’ve had an absolute nightmare with this phone. Spoken to Vodafone on chat, on phone and been into a store.

When I paid the $50 online it gave me a code but I didn’t realise you had to put the code into the phone. But it says the code is LOCKED. Is that right, just the word LOCKED?

I’m waiting for Vodafone to contact me today. The guy at the shop even though it might be an issue with the phone reception too. Could be taking this thing back tonight. Got sold a phone that had been returned as well and the SIM card had been broken out. Couldn’t activate the SIM card. Shambles!

  • Thanks OP…my son's phone is dying, so ordered one of these.

Not for my son mind you, he'll get his mum's phone, and then she can have this one!

That is, if it's not used like the one Godforspeed received.

  • Those who managed to unlock their iPhone via Vodafone unlock portal:

Did you receive an email etc. when the phone got unlocked? It's been 4 days since I paid the unlock fee…and still waiting.

  • I just refreshed my vodafone unlock page and it shows "unlocked" now. No email received and yet to try the non vodafone SIM in the phone. Just plug your IMEI number back into the unlock page to try. I paid on weds evening.

  • The Voda simcard came with the iPhone is expried. Anyone who is in my shoes managed to have Vodafone swap the simcard for a non-expired one?

Really not keen on driving 30km back to Officeworks.

    • How about going to a Vodafone store? They can swap it easily. Last time I lost the PIN number on the package (for activation) and get it done by visiting a store.

      • Thanks a lot.. will try that first

    • +1

This is old pack, I believe they've already got memo on this issue, when I bought my pack, the staff had memo printed, and followed the instruction, ending up she gave me a separate Voda Sim (from the shelf)

      • @jassssone
Sorry, but did you swap the sim in OW or Voda shop?
        Cheers,

        • +1

OW staff swapped when I purchase

      • They mentioned something similar when I bought mine. Thanks for clarifying.

    • How did you know the simcard had expired? I had a look at mine and couldn't find any expiry date.

      • Try to activate it

  • Just picked up one phone from OW Dandenong south store before they were about to close. They still have 3 more in stock if anyone wants to buy it.

  • Just making sure using a ipad charger/ plug is fine for charging this phone, what a crazy idea that they dont supply it with phone.
Is this the new norm with iphone or just this phone? I have only had ipads not iphones so im not sure if iphones was always without.

    • just a new thing they have started doing since the release of the 12. They frame it as an environmental protection manner

  • Picked one up from Officeworks this morning. After trying the IMEI in the unlock tool without success, I put in an Optus Sim to give it a shot and voila!! Worked straight away without having to go through an unlock procedure.

    • So you did not have to pay to unlock then?

      • Correct - came unlocked!
