You can get the same spec TUF games unit around $299 on Amazon, but that is not compatible with Merlin Firmware's so I went for this.

    This or the RT-AX82U which Bing Lee has for $385 delivered so was going to price beat at OW for $365. Is it worth the extra $100?
    Got 6 months of 1000/50 speed boost with SL so want a quicker router than my current 1900 but will likely go back to my lowly 100/40 plan so don't want to spend a fortune.

      go with Launtel, and change your speeds up and down at will (daily).. (often speed changes occur in less than five minutes and something immediately)

      I've got FTTP

      and interestingly enough the Tesltra Smartmodem Gen 2 is fast enough to handle the 1000/50 speeds. ($30-$50 on Ebay)

      I had a pair of Ax55 - in Mesh which worked perfectly.. and got full speeds through the 1000/50 as well.

      Bought a Tuf ax3000 gaming, to get the higher end Ai protectionpro and parental controls.. which also worked well, once you get over the initial installation / configuration hurdles..

      this is tempting.. but really.. its not going to speed anything up for me..

            Looking for a suitable equivalent router if mine reaches its end of life

          I hated the Gen 2 Smart Modem when I was with Telstra. Crap coverage and the 4G backup often didn't kick in when the NBN dropped out. I wasn't using the phone line, so swapped it out with an older Asus router to get better WiFi. (on HFC NBN)

          Thankfully, I'm with SuperLoop now though, so gave the white box away.

    I have some older Asus routers that have good throughput, but just be aware that some older pieces on equipment (home automation in my case) don't play well with mesh. They get confused and keep jumping from node to node. Even binding them to a node doesn't solve the problem.

    I like these, but there are limitations. I've just put some of my 2.4ghz automation things on an old router working as an AP and they are happy.

      I've got a whole mixture of crap on my Tuf Ax3000 Gaming router and AX55 on mesh.. and it works perfectly….

    Does this unit have a decent enough processing capability to handle a constant VPN connection for the whole house without impacting speed by much?

      The cpu in this model does not support aes instructions so will not be as fast for VPN performance as rt-ac86u or rt-ax86u or rt-ax88u. Whether it impacts your speed much depends on your plan… If you have 25/5 then I'd guess no real impact, 50/20 there possibly will be some impact, 100/20 then most likely heavy impact… Like going back to 50/20 or slightly worse.

    the RT-AX88U you can get for $440 (not the best price they had).. Wonder for a house with 2x 4k tv's 2x normal tv's few laptops, google home devices, wifi security cameras, home automation devices.. is it worth the extra ~200 for the AX88U ?

    Are the Asus models reliable? (Either this one or the 88 series)… My old Billion 8700VAXL-1600 reboots by itself every few days and drives me nuts. It's in router mode, the actual modem has months of uptime, it's just the billion acting really flaky 😕

      I've upgraded from another Asus model and didn't have any problems with that in 4 yrs. These come with a 3yr warranty which is great for peace of mind.

      The family controls on Asus are awesome, and free unlike many other brands where you have to buy a subscription if you want anything other than basic features. Can set users to different scheduled times etc ,… Blocks adult and/or social media with some simple etc ….

    I seemed to recall there is a way to check stock on officeworks website.. anyone know if its been pulled? Trying to work out which store local to me have stock so I can do price beat..

      I'm pretty sure that you can do still do price beat over the phone and have collect it at the store if they don't have stock now. Most of the office works store I looked at said "click and collect" only. I think that still qualified as "Stocked by Office works" It usually has "Available in store now" if they have stock in store. Give them a call.. Cant hurt trying.
