Was just about to post this, beat me to it!

    Crazy value for a 5G, SD870 phone.

    • +6

      With 120hz amoled

  • Would this be a decent step up from the Oppo a52?

    • +2

      Yes huge upgrade.

I upgraded from an A52 to a Poco X3 and felt a big difference.

      F3 would be even more.

      • Cool thanks. Will get this for my mum. Everytime I set something up on her A52 I cringe inside.

      • is there much difference in the OS? I like the Oppo feel.

        • +1

Too much mi craps & bloats you can't remove.

  • +4

This is insane value for a smartphone.

  • What about the Poco X3 Pro
    Someone get to it

    • Posted here

    • Poco x3 pro seems to offer little over the x3 NFC. Both still 4g, with more ram and storage.

      • SD 860 is huge gaming performance

        • is the SD870 > SD860?

          • @SaberX: Probably just higher clock speeds

but the Poco X3 NFC only had the SD732G

  • -7

Hi OP, how is this compared to Huawei?

  • how does the warranty work on these ones?

    • +8

You need to send it back and even then, good luck.

Ali's protection ends 14 days after the item is received.

Paying with PayPal will significantly increase that.

      • +5

best to stay clear I guess

        • +11

i basically take it as no warranty so if something goes wrong your prepared to either get the run around and/or lose the $430 you spent… obviously this doesn't happen often but yeh… that's my mindset when i purchase from China/OS sellers

          • +2

@scud70: not necessarily - it'll be hard yards but credit card/paypal as stated above gives protection against doa..

            ali complaints process is shite.

            • @petry: yes.. i know this from experience (Ali Complaints thing) ! but yeh still a pain in the ass to resolve so if i'm not happy to lose the money i don't spend it… for others its different just depends on your patience and appetite for crap … lol

    • +5

      what warranty?

  • I thought the presentation said this would be available on Amazon too, but I guess they won't do the early bird pricing? Also wondering if this is better than the Redmi Note 10 Pro that recently came out.

    • SD732G vs SD870???
      Touch sampling is 340Hz

    • Better performance but worse in term of battery life. It will still last you a long day however. Of course it's also more expensive.

  • Anyone with some Optus experience?

I'm using the link in the ad to see what bands Optus uses.

Band 40 on 4G is the old vivid wireless band afaik. This phone doesn't have band 40, is it still only for home broadband or is it also used for phones?
There's also no 5G band 40 on this phone. Is it also only used for home broadband?

    • according to whirlpool wiki, these are the Aus 5G bands:

      3500MHz (n78) – Telstra (from May 2019)
      3500MHz (n78) – Optus (from October 2019)
      3500MHz (n78) – Vodafone (from March 2020)
      2300MHZ (n40) – Optus (from June 2020)
      700MHz (n28) – Vodafone (from November 2020)
      850MHz (n5) – Telstra (from April 2020)

      ref: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

According to GSMArena this will have 5G bands:

      1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 41, 77, 78 SA/NSA

      ref: https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_f3-10758.php

So you're good on Telstra and Vodafone, but only 1 out of 2 on Optus (no 40, like you noted). Probably best suited to Telstra and Vodafone customers. More discussion here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/595207

    • According to gsmarena & Kimovil it does have Band 40, so not sure if Poco store have the correct specs at the moment.

      • No band 40 according to poco's official global page.

        https://www.po.co/global/product/poco-f3/specs

        • Your link says it includes Band 40

          4G: FDD-LTE Band 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, 28, 66
          TDD-LTE Band 38, 40, 41

          • @adr8: i think this all about 5g band n40 rather than 4g band 40

            optus dual band 5g https://www.optus.com.au/about/media-centre/media-releases/2…

5g band n78 is probably sufficient (but i'm not sure)

            • @c64: Oh ok yes I should've specified 4G in my previous comment as I was replying to drew442 first question.

Band 40 on 4G is the old vivid wireless band afaik. This phone doesn't have band 40

  • +3

Wish it has the SD card.

    • yeah, might drive me to the Poco X3 Pro

      • does the Poco X3 Pro allow a SD Card expansion though?

      • How much more on Poco X3 Pro?

        • How much more what??
          512GB SD card limit methinks

    • Can't you use one of the sim slots as SD card slot?

      • +1

Not on the F3, thats just dual SIM only

        • You're right. Just had a look at gsmarena. Pity they're not hybrid slots

    • From the OP's listing "Dual SIM Dual Standby (Supports 2+1 card slot)" 1 card slot = SD card ?

      • +4

That's misleading. Dual SIM slots, definitely doesn't support 2+1

        • Ah OK

  • +1

Now I'm waiting for F3 pro to launch. Want the pop up camera than having hole on the screen.

  • Dam the two areas that they dont seem to get rave reviews about are the cameras and battery performance which are both high on my list for an upgrade.

    • ameras and battery performance which are both NOT high in a game phone priority.

      • what mid range/lower priced phone like this would you recommend if targetting battery life and camera/performance stability? Buying a new one for mum - upgrading from her samsung s5 and they were tossing up mid range samsungs like the a31/a51 line etc. not sure if these chinese one are better bang for buck or not worth it?

    • Same I'm looking for only those items as upgrade as well. Doesn't have to top tier but not gonna pay over 1k for it

Oneplus 8 camera is average. OS not getting updates fast enough.

Google Pixel 4a deal gone already via Telstra, and that has a bad CPU and poor battery life.

Huawei phones no longer with Gapps

Xiaomi phone doesn't seem that great on Camera and its MIUI OS is inferior to Oxygen OS and Pixel

I don't know what to do been on Oneplus 6T close to 2.5 years, got LG V50 thinq for the dual screen but camera is sht

      • The Oneplus 8 pro cameras seem to get rave reviews but i havent looked at the 8T. I think any cameras will be a step up from the 6T ( im using one to) but if i'm spending the money i may as well get the best i can to last some years.

The lack of dual sim in Australia sucks as i would try the S21 range. The Oppo Find X3 Pro cameras seem to get a good review but will be release $1600+ so the Oneplus 9 Pro seems like it could be best bang for buck although still will probably be what you can pickup the S21 ultra on special for which at least will have local warranty.

I never find Oneplus updates an issue. Its never really had any bugs where i have wished it would be fixed asap. Has been a solid phone so its made me keen to get another.

The googles had too small of a screen for me. Hoping they bring out another XL which should also mean a better battery.

      • First I've heard of pixel 4a having poor cpu and battery. For everyday use it's great for me.

  • hows the camera?

    • +1

      Worse than Poco X3 NFC

      • +4

Not worse, just lower MP. From 64 to 48MP….this might be a good sign, as I'm not impressed with the X3 camera. The pixel rating is not indicative of the quality of the camera or the cost of the sensor.

As a point of reference, the most highly reviewed cameras are on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. They are just 12MP.

        • They didnt even give you the IMX568, instead they went with the cheaper IMX562

    • +1

hmm, the camera specs seem the same at my ~2yr old mi 9t. was tempted to upgrade

      • Lose the telephoto too. I'm tempted to upgrade still though cos of the better screen, faster chip and faster charging

  • If VoLTE and VoWIFI work on the carriers, this is my next phone.

  • -6

How is this phone a "deal" if you'd have no end of trouble getting warranty follow through from manufacturer?

    Who's gonna risk $400+ ?

Buy a phone on AU soil and save yourself the potential drama and loss of $

    • +1

You are buying directly from Xiaomi via Aliexpress, so has anyone applied warranty and was refused?

      • +1

You have 14 days from the receipt of the item to make a claim with Ali, after that you're on your own.

You can buy a "repair warranty" from Poco, but it seems to be a false economy

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000348655434.html?spm=a2g0o…

        • Dont you have 90 day return??
So take off 30 days for delivery, you have 60 days to play around and return?

          • @[Deactivated]: Some items offer free local returns. This doesn't seem to be one of them.

            • @ash2000: FWIW

              75-Day Buyer Protection
              Money back guarantee

              https://sale.aliexpress.com/__pc/v8Yr8f629D.htm?spm=a2g0o.de…

              • @[Deactivated]: I can't see 75 Days noted anywhere?

                • @ash2000: Just under the item price???

                  • @[Deactivated]: Lol. I can't see it (on app or desktop ). But I trust you!

                    • @ash2000: Do I need to do everything for you heh

Interestingly enough, the Poco X3 pro doesnt have this 75 day protection!!!

                      https://i.imgur.com/oa2CgQE.png

                      • @[Deactivated]: Lol. Thanks. I can see it now!

The 75 day guarantee is more about shipping. for example your item is not received within 75 days they will refund you. Once the item is flagged received it reverts to 14 days.

                        • @ash2000: MONEY BACK GUARANTEEWe promise your money back if the item you received is not as described, or if your item is not delivered within the Buyer Protection period. You can get a refund 15 days after the claim process finishes. This guarantee is in addition to and does not limit your statutory rights as a consumer, as granted by all mandatory laws and regulations applicable in your country of residence.
                          Terms & Conditions

                          • @[Deactivated]: Correct. 75 days to cover shipping , 15 days to cover a faulty phone once received

    • If you find dealing with Xiaomi a problem, you might find it hard dealing with many other stores overseas.

    • +5

I have ordered numerous Xiaomi's from aliexpress/banggood/tobydeals for myself and various others over the years and never had to return one. It is part of the risk you take when you buy a phone from overseas, but at the level you are getting for $400 I will be taking the risk again when this deal is live.

If it seems too risky, then buying locally is the deal for you. Over the past 3 phones (which I have had for around 2 years each), I have saved enough buying my phones without warranty to cover the cost of this phone.

      • +3

I've bought five Xiaomi phones since 2016 and never had a single issue with them. Ranging in price from 250 all the way up to 500.

OP comment is f ucking ignorant.

        • It's not about you not having issues with Xiaomi phones, it's for when there is a problem and you need repair or replacement. You will be in trouble if the phone starts playing up past the small window of time one would have in this instance to have it replaced etc… but you're still left with the same issue. Pixel phones of late have had lots of quality control issues, failing early or after a few months of use. It's much easier to just be able to walk into a store and have it replaced or refunded etc.

          • @Oofy Doofy: Yea of course but a lot of us take the risk and it's paid off. We know the risks , if it does go south.

If you're not comfortable with the risk, then you don't have to buy.

Just don't tell us that we shouldn't.

            • @adrianhughes1998: sometimes though you end up with two kids when you do take the risk

              was it worth it?

              • @AussieMark: What do you mean?

Never had issues with anything Xiaomi I've bought, and that's been like five phones, other home automation crap etc.

          • +2

@Oofy Doofy: well for up to $400-$500 it's worth to take the risk. Xiaomi quality is in fact quite good, I have never had any problem with them, and with Snapdragon chipset it is nearly impossible to brick it either for flashing ROM. You have the EDL mode to revive it with the USB cable trick.

            • +1

@samehada: Comparable to Samsung and 1/3 of the price. Risk/reward is ok.

  • Anyone know how this compares to the oneplus line up? I imagine only the Oneplus Nord can compete with it price wise

    • +2

Technically as good as the Samsung s20 FE???

    • +1

This has better CPU than Oneplus 8

      • -1

But a worser OS? Can I flash this phone to be non Xiaomi. Anything close to Oxygen OS??

        • is the MIU OS that bad? Upgrading my mum phone and she's been on a Samsung S5 for years, just needed something intuitive enough for her and not an alien shift in how she's 'memorised' how to use smartphones and apps.

        • +1

Just go into each built-in apps, such as Cleaner, Recorder, Installer, File Manager …. turn off recommendations. The ads will be gone.

I am happy with the 2 yo Mi9, other than the lack of micro SD card support. Next time, I will get a mid-range phone like this one that has micro SD card.

  • -1

How are the cameras on these phones?

Looking for something comparable to s21 Ultra thats not over priced because of known brand name.

    • -1

      One word: shyte

      • Are you talking about the phone cameras ? Or the 21 Ultra.

        • -2

          yeah this phone camera sux

    • I've got the Poco X3 and the camera does a decent job.

Not winning any awards but still has pretty good detail imo.

      • The camera in the Pro is worse

      • I just want to know if it's better than oneplus 8 pro with gcam. Otherwise I will skip

        • No idea, but you can download Gcam for the Poco phones as well seeing as they have snapdragon processors, but even the default camera does a great job.

  • Does this come with Display-Port Alt mode?

  • this or wait for a bargain sale on the Asus Rog 3.
