      • +12

we can deep fake dead actors, I'm pretty sure we can change a couple of words in a PDF too.

        • I sense a side hustle here…

With a username like that mate, you should be taking one for the team

      • +11

First in line, but last in a race

    • I'll just wait for someone to tell me it's not april 1st wherever this story came out

  • +8

Does it count if you run 10km on your treadmill?

    • Would like to know too

    • +3

Yes if you are using a smart watch to track the run

      • What if I set the treadmill to spin for 10km but I remain on the couch?

  • +50

Up to week 3 of couch to 5k and finding it's getting easier. Maybe I'll go on to the 10k one after and join in. Should be ready to go by September and it gives me something to aim for.

    • congrats!

    • Well done!

    • +1

I started this a while ago but gave up after a day or two. I really should start again as I do want to be fitter and more healthy.

    • +17

Thanks for all the encouragement. If anyone is looking to get started, I'm over 100kg (even after losing the 13kg I put on at the start of COVID, thanks to intermittent fasting) so if I can do it, most people should be able to. I find it easier to run in the mornings when I haven't eaten, but a few hours after eating later in the day has been okay too.

The first week was hard, I gasped and stumbled through the 1min of running each time and was counting down the clock. I thought that I'd never be able to do 1.5min of running, but it was actually easier, I must have built up some muscle. Remember you only need to jog, not run, I need to remind myself to slow down regularly. I play my music and have the app running and I no longer take my phone out of my pocket, it tells me when to run/walk.

I use the free version of this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.c25k

    • C25K is amazing. I did it a couple of years ago and was doing 10k runs. I have now completely fallen off and probably need to start again from the start oops

    • It's a great program. 10 might feel difficult but if you keep a slow pace it's easier than you'd think.

    • +1

Kids will love this and get them off the couch too. I liked C25k but it was boring after the end. Found the Nike training app when looking at their amazing Go Fly Ease shoes that people without hands can use… NTC app adjusts for level and has daily variations, still coming up with new exercises after 2 months and they do seem to make running easier. https://www.nike.com/au/ntc-app

      • Wow ! Just googled the Go Fly Shoes, that is a great piece of tech for those with disabilities. The NDIS should cover the cost of these, but probably won't.

      • Good on them for looking after people with no hands, but what about people with no feet?

    • +2

      I'm on my week 8.
All the best to both of us I guess

      • The last week? I think you've got this! Well done!

    • The jump from 5k to 10k is a beastttt. This has got me motivated to get back into running. 5k won't be too hard but there's a huge jump some weeks in and I couldn't help but go HOW?!!

  • +1

would a screenshot like this work
    https://images.app.goo.gl/MjsfacRteTKBufSS9

  • any time limit?

    • ye 24 hours

      • spread acorss how many days?

  • +52

If you run 58.14m today (round up to 60m if you're a beast) and keep increasing the distance by this amount each day, you'll be able to run the 10km by September 19.

This is easily the best way to train.

Source, I play video games all day so I'm an expert on commitment and achieving goals.

    • So in first week one one should then be able to run 420 meters etc. I doubt it.
I think it would more about walking, running, walking, running and split over a km and slowly increasing and not about adding 60 meters a day in one hit. Every one is different I suppose so probably not a case of one size fits all.

      • +1

this is actually the way to do it. there's a popular app called couch to 10k that trains you up to be able to be able to run 10km from a base of absolutely 0 that follows this method. I think it starts out time based rather than distance based though.

        • Unfortunately I don't have IAP yet… Nor do I have an app.

    • I love how the beasts will rotund up to 60m. NAISE!

    • +1

I can run 60m in about 8secs. So going on a 60m increment each day I should be able to run 10km by 19th September in approx 22mins. That’s a world record time, I guess I’ll be getting two Guinness World Record certificates.

    • -1

By that logic, you should try this too!

Open a new savings account and make daily deposits into it, starting with $2 today. For every subsequent deposit, starting from tomorrow, add $2 to the amount you deposited the previous day.

By this time next year, you should've saved $133k, which should be enough for a house deposit (10% - 15%) in Inner West Sydney!

  • Love it! Great deal, and presumably, get to be a part-holder of an official world record!

  • +20

In the unlikely event anyone wants to buy the medal, they sent this code when i ordered the cert: RunWithFriends25OFF

It gives you $12 off, so $36 for the medal + $13.xx for shipping. Should work on the other merch too.

  • Thanks. Just purchased. What is the mentioned running portal?

    1. on the day of the run, record your run with a running app or watch and upload a screenshot or photo to our running portal.
  • +6

I'll be running 10km four times on that day, along with several thousand others in the Sydney marathon.

    • +10

You should probably finish the last 2.2km if you're gonna run 40km

      • -2

If you want to be pedantic, I didn't say I was running 10km four times then stopping.

        • +1

Boo to your sense of humour!

  • +11

I'm so down for being part of a world record, but the medal is such a blatant, transparent money grab. This is a marketing company that does little more than sell trinkets.

    • +4

      Agree. The medal is bullshit.

    • +1

      Also thick beer.

      • +6

FTR, it's not Guiness/GWR selling the medal. It's this 'Virtual Runners' company that does nothing but sell medals to people who 'participate' in virtual runs - it's a feel-good trinket for exercising by yourself.

        • +2

Wait I'm supposed to be buying myself medals?!

          • @Telios: Nothing says winner like buying your own certificate and medal :)

    • +3
      • +1

        You absolute legend.

    • I don't see how this is a money grab.

There is no entry fee to participate, which is how other marathon events cover their medal production costs.

Also, no one is forcing you to buy the medal.

      • It's essentially a pre-order for an unofficial trophy. Sure, you don't have to buy it, but if you do you're a sucker.

  • Gonna sell out, people just gonna throw it into gym tree again,

  • Thanks OP, applied

  • -1

Thank you for this! I love it 😻

10kms is nothing of a challenge for me, I do 8/9kms a day daily. It is a nice add on and show off!

    • 8/9kms a day daily

      888.888888… metres per day daily

      • Asian?

  • +1

Nobody at work would believe I ran 10klm, walked 10km, or crawled 10 mtrs..

  • +1

The wiki page for the Guinness world records takes a surprising turn!

Norris and Ross McWhirter … were commissioned to compile what became The Guinness Book of Records … Ross McWhirter was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1975.

    • while I in no way condone his murder given the situation at the time and what he was advocating it really isn't a surprise and he acknowledged at the time that he was a likely target

  • +4

As if the Covid blood-clot, facial stroke, etc vaccines that still require wearing a mask, social distancing, and lockdowns (so why bother!?) weren't enough… now we'll have people dropping dead for running 10km for the first time in over a decade after all the KFC, Dominos, McDonalds hacks, and free delivery deals.

And those who make it ok should still be careful not to spill their Guinness.

  • +2

I suppose recording my "run" in runtastic while actually riding my ninebot max from a previous deal isn't within the spirit of this record.

  • Can I run from home?

  • why do they need my home address then ?

  • +5

Time to warm up my car…

  • Paypal asks me to pay 0.01 Euro, is that right?

    • +1

      Don't enter any payment details.

  • +2

Hook your watch on your dog and let it run around your backyard.

  • +3

This isnt a deal. Its more akin to a competition in that you need to do a certain physical task in order to get it.

If this is a deal than any world record is a deal (i.e. if you can break it then they will give you the record). The difficulty in achieving it shouldn't determine if its a deal or not.

Also running 10km isn't that easy for everyone to achieve.

  • Define “run”

  • +1

Does it come with a free defibrillator (eneloop powered of course)

  • im with chchnu, not a deal at all… complete a world record and get a free certificate? how is that a bargain just because you dont pay $15 for a piece of paper?
shameless money grab for a useless "record"

  • +1

Run for fun? What the hell kind of fun is that?!

    • The fun part is telling everyone at work how far you ran

  • -3

Not a deal since you may get an electronic participation certificate regardless of the result and no one is paying for this?

Certificate and the 10 cm large medal both hold the official Guinness World Records Attempt Run Logo and are handed out, even if we will not break the record.
We are convinced that we will make it. But even if we don't: in agreement with the officials of the Guinness Book of Records, even if we don't break the world record, we may send you your official medal as a participant of the attempt.

  • Anyone know whether the run has to be completed within 24 hours of a particular time zone? Or can it be anytime on 19 September no matter where you are?

    • Doesn’t say either way. They probably just doing 19th in your local Timezone for simplicity but in reality it means some results won’t count as it would make it more than 24 hour period.

    • This is listed in the checklist:

"To ensure that no country is disadvantaged due to the time difference, we have agreed to choose a specific time zone in which the time frame begins at 0:00 o'clock and ends at 24:00 o'clock.

The time zone UTC -2 has been set for this purpose.

All runs that are not completed and recorded in this specific time frame cannot be evaluated for the world record attempt! For this reason, it is necessary to adhere to the time frame that applies to YOU."

      Australia/Sydney UTC +10 Start 12:00 (Sept 19th) end 12:00 (Sep 20th)

  • to get a medal it'll cost you $48.. they'll be making alot of money out of this - medals cost less than a couple of bucks to make
