You're literally eating a periodic table

      • +20

Water, Flavour Enhancer (L-Monosodium Glutamate E621), Salt, Soybean Oil, Edible Fungi (4%) (White Suillus Bovinus, Yellow Suillus Bovinus, Boletus Edulis), Maltodextrin, Sugar, Corn Starch, Ginger, Welsh Onion, Garlic, Prickly Ash, Flavouring, Isolated Soy Protein, Turmeric Powder, Thickener (Hydroxypropyl Distarch Phosphate E1442), Flavour Enhancer (Disodium 5'-Ribonucleotide E635, Succinic Acid E363), Preservative (Potassium Sorbate E202)

I do agree that this is a test tube vat of god knows what… and of course its made in china so its trustworthy (!!!)

However I think food made here in Aust would have similar amounts of periodic table elements.

@Bunnyburger: It's not just because there is a long list of chemicals, it's the fact there are so many food additives in the ingredients list which makes you question how bad the quality of the original ingredients are that it needs tons of additives to make it taste decent/how much cost-cutting they do by substituting 'real' ingredients for synthetic chemicals

            • +2

@Could Be Better: You're right, a lifetime of hotpot powder mix wouldn't be good for ones health. Even the salt alone would be bad.

I was just trying to say that everything broken down is just chemicals. Though exercising caution is a good idea.

Bottom line if that's truly everything that's on the list I'm happy to consume it in limited quantities.

          Needs extra MSG

    • +9

They're literally the biggest and most successful chain in SE Asia, they kinda know what they're doing.

      • +11

In all fairness the stores in Asia are well regarded for the service and experience. I’m a huge fan of HDL.

        • +4

If you're dining alone I hear they let you sit with a teddy bear!

          Now that's service!

          • +4

@Bunnyburger: This is true even for the Australian stores! I asked the Box Hill store and they said they’d sit you with a teddy bear if you’re alone :)

Btw, service and food were amazing, they sang happy birthday to our friends :)

      • +4

I agree their in-store food quality and services are excellent!! Just not these Hot pot soup base.

        • +1

Really? nuts… i was about to buy some today and see if I could replicate the HDL hot pot experience at home

          • @jace88: You have a teddy bear you can sit with? Also sing happy bday to yourself.

        MSG makes everything taste better!
        Uncle Roger definitely approves.

      • It's also fairly expensive. Last time I went, costed $160 for 2.

  • +2

I've tried Mushroom, and Shrimp - Mushroom is way nicer but they're both very average at best.

  • +1

Surely it's easier to just throw in some mushrooms, garlic and chili when you're having hot pot.

    • Try getting couple of pho takeaway from a Vietnamese restaurant and use that soup base to make your hot pot, you won’t regret that

      • +1

Yeah but cost you more than this satchel.

        • +1

I don't think Indiana Jones wears this satchel.

      • +1

my go to hot pot soup base, packet pho from chinese supermarket, couple of teaspoons of rich gravy. then you can add other stuff to build on your base mix, onion, garlic, bones or carrots if you like it sweeter

  • no WA again

    • 😭

      • in syd its only in suburbs where they expect it will sell, hint hint

        • In VIC it is also in Asian majority suburbs.

  • Thanks , heard so much about them, I’m gonna try it for first time

    • any good!?

      • Haven't tried it yet but I probably should soon as the expiry is end of this month. Probably why they are on sale now.

  • +2

dunno why they dont stock the spicy soup base

    • The Box Hill store gives away goodie bags when you leave, with some snacks and a packet of the spicy soup base. Needless to say, we had hot pot again (home made) the very next day.

In case you didnt know HaiDiLao literally means "scooping from the bottom of the ocean"

    • -3

Thought it meant "Hai went to Laos"

      • +2

Dont know why people neg u , it actually mean Hai go to Laos in Vietnamese lol

        • +1

That’s exactly how it reads. At least we think the same.

        • Well depending on the tone it could also say Hai go wipe :)

  • +1

Freaking racist not selling in WA lol

    • +1

      Haha, racist how?!!

      • +1

Not only does their premier want to close them off from the rest of the country, they now consider themselves their own race!

    • +1

What about NT, ACT and TAS?

  • +1

livingston in wa definately stock them

    • Despite being in widespread use, the misspelling definately comes in for considerable scorn. The Urban Dictionary has a separate entry for definately, which it defines as: 'Idiot-speak for “definitely”. One of the most common moronic misspellings found on the Internet.

  • +1

    Why only limited stores?

    • +5

Purely based on sales volume. The suburbs with a larger Asian, especially Chinese, population density is more likely to have this product and similar products and it follows you will see many more Indian products in areas with larger Subcontinental populations.
It's always expected sales numbers vs shelf space with supermarkets

      • Another factor is whether there are other Asian competitor stores around or not.

    • My local store in Preston had a lot of these around Feb-Mar, was marked clearance because expires in April (price off about 30-40%). So probably they all sold out before go for half price special.

  • Update: This promotion runs for the second consecutive week, so grab it if you missed it last week!

  • Don't recommend it, both the soup base and the dips are way too salty for human consumption.

Srsly do not know how people eat this kind of stuff.

    • Which soup base did you try?

    • +1

thats why it is called soup base, you have to add broth to it, maybe one bag to 5 litre broth or water.

    • yeah which one?
