Still loving my 4XL so far.
Put 4XL and my recent purchased S20 Ultra side by side comparison.
The 4XL main camera quality is heaps better than S20U. You can absolutely see the difference.

    • I'm still kicking myself for getting a 5…

      • +2

Pixel 6 is around the corner

        • The last three pixels were released Sept/Oct time frame so if you can wait another 6 months…

      • No good? Or just not worth the extra cost over a 4XL?

        • +1

As comparison pixel 3 has a way better selfie camera(s) than 4 or 5. Pixel 4 has a telephoto lens which is better for zooming or portrait. But 5 has wide angle. Otherwise differences are minimal in the main camera as they all uses the same camera sensor.

        • Yeah mainly not worth the extra cost. I also didn't realise how much I would miss the extra real estate of my 2XL's screen.

      • +1

I got it to replace my 4xl and then sold it shortly after. The 4xl speakers are so much better. Just felt overall the 4xl is better.
If only they'd added the selfie cams from the 3 and iterated on the 4xl by adding an ultrawide.
Also bought the S21 Ultra. Can't do Samsung software. It's such a mess compared to Pixel.

    • you got some pics you can share of the same image capture by both phones
      so i can see?

how is the video recording quality compared on both phones?

      • Yes but I don't know how to upload the images

        • Click my accounts > comments
          click files tab

you can also zip the files and share it from your google drive etc

          • @pinkybrain: I've uploaded them to my files, can you see them?

            • @ozvince: i think you need to share the links here in the comments

              go to files
right click the pics and copy each link
              then paste here in comments

                • +12

@ozvince: In second pic pixel kills samsung..

              • @pinkybrain: The results are really shocked me.
The first comparison was taken today before 6pm in the jetty, you can see the 4xl photo details are better than S20U.
The second comparison 4xl used Astro mode, whereas S20U can only shot up to 30s in the night mode.

                • @ozvince: thanks

how do the video recording compare?

also wonder of the s21 ultra is any better..

                  • @pinkybrain: That's the pixel weak point. S20U can record up to 8K 24FPS whereas 4xl only support 4K 30Fps. Samsung have a lot more details than Google on video recording, plus better stabilisation

                    • @ozvince: I can see the pics you posted
does seem like pixel is better
                      especially the boat pic

the pixel also has more detail in the third pic under that bridge etc even thought was more further away..
there is more pixel smoothing on the s20U

The first pic at the water area look similiar in detail except the color was more blue for the sky on the s20u and the sun was more brighter as well..

In regards to the video recording
how does it look if you do both at 4k 30 fps?

Yeah the samsung can do 8k 24fps, but from what I read or seen the youtube, they say it is not that great and is more grainy
it also has moire effect when there is movement on 8k and 4k as well on the samsung

Not sure if that also occurs on the pixel

                      • @pinkybrain: Yeah 8K is not very useful at this stage especially without a gimbal. I use 4k 60 fps on S20U in majority time. For video comparison I would say Samsung can capture more details and the video more smoothly. You wouldn't see much difference unless you put these footages on a desktop screen or some extreme low light conditions. Because S20u has a bigger camera sensor, for day time video recording, I would say 4xl is good and enough.

                • @ozvince: I can only see Night Sight mode. Where did you find Astro mode?

                  • +1

@BuyNow Think Later: To actually capture astro shots, you’ll need a tripod (or some other makeshift way of holding your phone completely still) and very low light conditions you’ll then have to enter Night Sight mode for the phone to automatically enter astrophotography mode.

Pixel 2 XL owner here. I believe what you said even though I don't have a Pixel 4 XL.

      • +2

        That's what it is
        Pixel is the excellent😉

  • Good price , especially for the lifetime unlimted google storage for your HQ pics

    • +3

I would have bought this but that battery life and size though. Happy with my Pixel 5, compact size but 30% more battery life than 4XL, still got unlimited HQ (compressed) google photo storage. I think Pixel 4 would have been a mild success if they have added 30% more battery on both versions (especially the Pixel 4 because that got worst battery life in all Pixels).

      • Honestly I have the Pixel 5 and the 4XL and I prefer the 4xl which is on par maybe slightly less than the Pixel 5. I would buy this again in a heartbeat.

        • +1

Totally agree. It's like a downgrade to pixel 5
Mid tier CPU and smaller screen size on pixel 5, whereas better performance and more premium on 4XL.

          • @ozvince: Just got another of these as a back-up it's a no brainer for new for this device.

  • +2

Does the face unlock work with many apps? The lack of fingerprint scanner is holding me back :/

    • Face unlock quite well supported for neo banks and other apps. It's much nicer than finger print another reason I would have this over fingerprint scanner. I really missed this from when I side graded to the Pixel 5.

    • +3

Not many many apps support it. CommBank app allows face unlock to log-in, but the rest like ING, Westpac,ANZ are currently not supporting this method to log-in

      • +1

True but ING fingerprint unlock is slower than typing pin along with other clunky bank apps. Imo face beats fingerprint in most scenarios.it would be nice for face unlock to be more supported but I would prefer the other benefits of this device over newer pixel devices. Also I think the only issue with the Pixel 4 line was battery life which I think the pixel 4xl has quite acceptable battery considering features and efficiency.

        • Google itself removed from gen 5, so no
Way this will be future. Unless samsung is on board. Till then it's RIP

          • @hopper: I saw it might be back in the pixel 6 with Google silicon let's see.

    • That's the only feature of Pixel 5 that I like and miss on 4 XL…

    • I have a Pixel 4, and dislike the face unlock.

It's good in theory, but the following situations are problematic:
      1. at night, the glow of the screen isn't enough to illuminate the face enough
      2. when I was wearing a mask during these covid times I really regretted not having a fingerprint unlock
      3. after dropping the phone and getting a crack through the selfie camera, I've given up forever on using the face unlock

I'm waiting for a good deal on a pixel to replace it .. but don't want another Pixel 4 (or 4XL) because of this experience.

To answer your original question, I have noticed most apps will give me the option for face unlock for the app.

  • Good price.
    Still enjoying my 4XL :)

  • always like pixel, still love my pixel 2xl, any idea where i can get a battery replacement?

    • Easy to find from eBay. The problem is installing it.

      • YouTube video will help out

  • Anyone bought from this seller? Is is safe / reputable. Seems to be selling lots of refurbs.

    • Bought from them before, phones were as advertised. But these seem to be brand new with 24 month warranty.

  • Damnit already ordered a 4A for my mother ah well

  • Apart from battery life, this is an amazing phone.

  • Samsung S21 or Pixel 4 XL?

    • How much is s21? I think the pixel 4XL at this price is hard to beat. Great value

      • +2

S21 with the recent trade in deal seems to be much better value because it’s not much more than this

        • +1

Oh yeah if that's still available it's hard to beat!

  • +1

Had my 4XL for almost a year now and still love it. Glad I didn't wait for the 5.
You don't even notice the forehead on the device.
Only gripe was covid masks and face unlock not working.
Thankfully were getting past that now :)

  • Question about ebay plus - it says I've been a member in the past, and that I'll have to pay the $50 to start it.
On the second page it doesn't list the $50 voucher, will I still get it? Don't want to pay $50 for ebay plus

  • -1

Wow. I just bought my mum a new Pixel 3 XL 64Gb for $475. Both the 4 and the 3 are excellent.

I just bought this to refresh my existing 4 XL.

  • How does this phone stack up against something like this https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-galaxy-a52-128gb-… from Samsung which at a glance I can see has a SD card slot which the pixel lacks.

    • A52 is a mediocre device. The winner with the Pixel is the bloat-free Android OS and the killer camera.

      • I've never been particularly bothered by the bloat on Samsung devices that I've previously bought. And from what I've seen of reviews the A52 camera, while not as good, is still pretty solid.

Also has a larger battery, headphone jack and expandable storage compared to the Pixel 4xl.

        • +1

So, are you looking for comparison or just trying to make the point to yourself that the phone you bought is better? I don't understand the point.

          • @rhymingboxer1: I'm asking for a comparison yeah, I'm just confused by the description of the A52 as a "mediocre device" based purely on the (still well performing) camera and the software it comes with.

            • @crawfs: Okay, sure let me list out the differences:-
Pixel 4XL has Gorilla glass 5 on front and back, IP 68 rated, Snapdragon 855, CPU & GPU is superior, no expandable slot, has wireless charging and has better performance benchmarks(if that's of any significance). Also, Pixel was released in 2019 while A52 is in 2021. I think that is why he said Pixel 4XL is superior however, A52 has some positives on Pixel too like Battery, 4K video and extendable card slot. Hope this helps.

  • How's the front camera for these phones? I've heard 3 is better but is the difference that much? Is it good on social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram?

  • +3

Open to debate, but this is the best Android phone ever made if you ask me… I have the 5 5G and it feels light and cheap in comparison to my 4 XL…

  • 128gb black sold out

  • How much longer will the 4XL get guaranteed security updates?

    • Should be 18 months.

Some disadvantages to this phone, but still worth it for the camera.

Even my Nexus 5X which I had 6 years ago took very good photos - better than my current Mi 9 Lite by far, and Googles camera has gotten vastly better since then.

      • How does music sound on this?

  • 128GB version sold out
